New York - Ten years after its Initial Public Offering, UPS (NYSE:UPS) marked the anniversary today as its chief executive officer returned to the Big Apple to ring the opening bell for the New York Stock Exchange.

Chairman and CEO Scott Davis was joined by members of the UPS Board of Directors and senior executives in launching the trading day on Friday. Davis is the 10th chairman and CEO in UPS's 102-year history but only the third to spend time guiding the affairs of a "public" UPS.

UPS, founded as a Seattle messenger service in 1907 by a 19-year-old named Jim Casey, was owned privately by employees, retirees and various foundations until Nov. 10, 1999. On that day, UPS issued 109.4 million Class B shares representing 10 percent of the company's outstanding shares at an IPO price of $50 per share.

At the time, the $5.47 billion raised on that day was the largest domestic IPO ever. Over the ensuing 10 years, public ownership of UPS has grown from 10 percent of the company's stock to 70 percent.

"The IPO marked another milestone in our 102-year history that allowed us to lever our financial strength to expand our business," said Davis, noting UPS now offers a broad range of logistics, supply chain, freight, customs brokerage, financial and retail services.

"I firmly believe that going public facilitated execution of UPS's strategy to become the leading global transportation solutions provider," he added. "UPS is better positioned today than at any time in its history."

About UPS
Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The company can be found on the Web at UPS.com.

Mainz - DB Schenker Rail, Deutsche Bahn AG's European rail freight transport operator, announced that it will streamline its management and organizational structure effective January 1, 2010. The implementation of these measures will take place pending the required approvals from the Supervisory Board and the co-determination bodies.

"The current economic situation requires a lean organization with clearer, explicitly defined responsibilities for business results, and short decision-making paths. We must restore operational and economic balance to DB Schenker Rail, especially in Germany," said Dr. Alexander Hedderich, CEO of DB Schenker Rail. "Our company's numerous activities in Europe have to be linked together to form a real network in order to generate benefits for our customers and foster business success. A streamlined management structure and the clear assignment of responsibility for results within our company are the basis for achieving these goals."

DB Schenker Rail's organizational concept should remain basically unchanged, although it will be simplified at the business unit level. Plans call for the business unit to continue to be organized into three regional business segments: Germany/Region Central, Region West and Region East, as well as four business unit functions managed on a pan-European basis: Sales, Operations, Human Resources and Finance. The new dimension will be that the previous Automotive and Intermodal Business Segments will be integrated into the European and German sales organization. Development of a separate combined transport (CT) railroad at Intermodal will be discontinued. The individual companies assigned to the regions will be responsible for their profit and loss.

Parallel to the structural modifications, there will also be changes in the management of the business unit and the business segments. Alexander Hedderich, Head of the business unit, will also be placed in charge of the Germany/Region Central Business Segment. Hans-Georg Werner, the current Head of Intermodal, will take over as Head of Region East. Region West will continue to be managed by Keith Heller. Karsten Sachsenröder will continue as Head of Sales Europe and Region Central, and will also be temporarily responsible for Intermodal activities. Axel Marschall will continue as Head of Automotive Europe.

Christian Kuhn will be responsible for Operations at the European Management Board level as well as in the Germany/Region Central Business Segment. Kuhn is returning to DB Schenker Rail, although he will continue as a member of the IQ Martrade Holding and Management advisory board, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of their Indian subsidiary company, Tata Martrade International Logistics Ltd. Furthermore Martrade and DB Schenker will continue and intensify their already established project-orientated cooperation. "Based on Christian Kuhn's extensive experience, we are entrusting him with the key tasks of stabilizing operations in Germany and shaping the European operations network," said Alexander Hedderich.

Talks are currently underway with Dr. Christoph Wolff regarding new responsibilities at DB Schenker Rail or within the DB Group.

Edmund Schlummer, who was previously Head of Region Central, has decided to leave the company at the end of the year. "We would like to express our deep thanks to Edmund Schlummer for making a major contribution towards the further development of our business in Europe," said Hedderich.

— WebWireID107195 —

Business Announcements

Machinery

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Stuttgart, Germany

    * Dr. Joachim Schmidt: 'We will continue this positive trend, and we expect sales in the fourth quarter to be above last year's level.'
* Record sales in China – Schmidt: 'We expect Mercedes-Benz Cars to increase its sales in China by more than 50 percent in full-year 2009.'
* Mercedes-Benz USA posts best monthly result since the beginning of the year, with sales up by 21 percent in October
* E- and S-Class sedans maintain market leadership

In October, global sales were up at Mercedes-Benz for the first time this year. Mercedes-Benz was able to increase sales significantly in October by seven percent to 88,400 units (October 2008: 82,500. The smart brand sold 9,300 (October 2008: 11,300) units (minus 18 percent). With the delivery of 97,700 passenger cars (October 2008: 93,800), total sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars increased by four percent. The October sales increase was due to the E-Class and the new generation of the S-Class as well as to high growth rates in many regions such as North America and Asia/Pacific. Sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles were also above last year's level in Western Europe.

'We will continue this positive trend in the coming months, and we expect sales in the fourth quarter to be above the level of the same period of last year,' said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars. Contributing to this development will be the new E-Class and the new generation S-Class, as well as the ongoing strong growth rates in the Asia/Pacific region, particularly in China. By the end of September, Mercedes-Benz had already sold more vehicles in China than in all of last year. Says Schmidt: 'Mercedes-Benz Cars will continue to grow at a dynamic rate in China, and we expect the increase for 2009 as a whole to amount to more than 50 percent.'

In October Mercedes-Benz once again set a sales record in China, with sales rising by 78 percent to 6,600 units (October 2008: 3,700). As a result, since the start of the year, Mercedes-Benz has been the fastest-growing premium brand in China. In October, Mercedes-Benz Cars also delivered more vehicles than ever before to the Asia/Pacific region as a whole, handing over 14,100 passenger vehicles to customers (October 2008: 10,500) for an increase of 34 percent. High growth rates were also posted in October in Australia (up 22 percent) and South Korea (up 63 percent).

In the United States, October was the best month of the year so far for Mercedes-Benz. Sales bucked the general market trend, rising by 21 percent to 18,200 units (October 2008: 15,000). This was the first time this year that sales were substantially higher than in 2008, and ensured that Mercedes-Benz remains the strongest German premium brand in the U.S. Contributing factors here included the E-Class, deliveries of which tripled to 6,100 units, and the GLK, which was once again the best-selling vehicle in its class in October, with deliveries of 1,800 units. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz posted another sales record in Canada in October, increasing customer deliveries by 28 percent to 2,200 passenger vehicles (October 2008: 1,700).

In the Western Europe region (not including Germany), Mercedes-Benz increased its sales by seven percent in October, thanks in particular to the high increases for the new E-Class. The brand enjoyed strong growth amounting to 55 percent in the UK, with a total of 5,800 units sold.

Sales of new E-Class continued to develop positively in the past month, with worldwide deliveries doubling in October to 17,100 units. Double-digit sales increases were registered in almost all markets. That made it once again the clear market leader in its segment. The company expects the launch of the new station wagon, which can be seen at dealerships starting on November 21, to give an additional positive boost to the E-Class family.

The new generation of the S-Class also got off to a successful start. Worldwide sales of the S-Class sedan were slightly above the previous year's level. Since the beginning of this year, the sedan has been the best-selling sedan in its segment. In China, which is now the biggest market for the S-Class, 1,100 luxury sedans were delivered to customers in October alone, which represents an increase of 12 percent. The sedan also sold very well in Germany, with an increase of 42 percent, and in Japan, where October sales increased by 13 percent. Mercedes-Benz sold 15,100 units of its SUVs worldwide (2008: 14,800), with an increase of two percent. The GLK, which was especially popular, enjoyed mainly double-digit growth rates in the Western European markets.

— WebWireID107194 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Financial Markets

Retail

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

New Design Reflects UPS Safe Driving Program Available to Local Boys & Girls Club Teens

NASCAR driver David Ragan and the UPS (NYSE:UPS) team will have an extra 4.5 million fans cheering them this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway when Ragan gets behind the wheel of his No. 6 Ford Fusion, which will sport a new paint scheme that reflects UPS and Boys & Girls Clubs of America's (BGCA) UPS Road Code safe driving program.

The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, introduced a national program this year in collaboration with BGCA to teach the company's industry-leading safe driving techniques to teens. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, but UPS and its world-renowned drivers are making an effort to change that with the help of BGCA and Ragan.

"UPS drivers are among the safest on the road. The Road Code program gives us the opportunity to use our nationally recognized safe driving training to directly impact a need in our communities and prevent teenage deaths," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "This special paint scheme captures our commitment to driving safety, starting with teens at local Boys & Girls Clubs, and sharing it with UPS NASCAR fans."

The new car design for the Texas race incorporates BGCA's logo, along with handprints from members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas who are participating in the UPS Road Code program. The paint scheme was unveiled in a special trackside event featuring Ragan and these Club teens.

"Our entire race team is excited about the special Boys & Girls Clubs of America design we're running this weekend," said Ragan. "This is definitely a change from the normal look of our UPS car, and it's always fun to give the fans something new to get excited about. This car is certainly going to stand out on track and hopefully help bring some awareness to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the UPS Road Code program."

Ragan became a spokesperson for the UPS Road Code program this season, supporting the program through a series of video and audio public service announcements that are available online and have been broadcast on radio stations nationwide. He's also been visiting some Boys & Girls Clubs near racing cities, speaking to the UPS Road Code teens about the importance of safe driving.

"Safety is a priority for me on and off the track, and being on the road is something that needs to be taken seriously," continued David. "It's easy to get distracted when you're in the car, but you need to be really focused when you're behind the wheel of a vehicle."

"We are extremely grateful to The UPS Foundation for bringing UPS Road Code to our teens, providing access to important safety training utilizing state-of-the-art simulators," said Roxanne Spillett, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. "The paint scheme for David's car is outstanding. It truly captures the essence of our Clubs, our kids, and our dedication to their safety."

Teens, parents, and others interested in learning more about safe driving and UPS Road Code should visit www.ups.com/roadcode.

TomTom HD Traffic to provide live traffic feed across Amscreen convenience store network

TomTom and Amscreen, the digital signage company today announce a sponsorship deal to provide millions of motorists with the most up-to-date traffic information thanks to TomTom's HD Traffic.

The deal will see TomTom become the exclusive provider of live traffic feeds across Amscreen's digital signage network. The first convenience store network to feature TomTom's HD Traffic on its close proximity signage units will be BP.

The BP network utilises Amscreen's bespoke 'plug and play' technology, which allows screen content to be remotely updated without the need for any extra cabling or IT input, on site. Available at BP's network of over 300 company owned sites, TomTom's HD Traffic technology uses data from travelling Vodafone users, making it possible to monitor, in real time, the actual speed of millions of cars across the road network. This data is merged with anonymous real-time GPS data from connected TomTom customers and information from traffic authorities, road operators and commercial third parties to provide customers with the most accurate and precise traffic information.

Damian Woodward, VP Sales & Marketing, TomTom commented: 'The Amscreen network provides us with the perfect way to assist over 7 million motorists per week. Our HD Traffic technology enables us to provide these customers with traffic information featuring unprecedented accuracy and quality.'

The deal with TomTom comes at a time when the Digital Out of Home market is buoyant, with the size of market ever-growing and expected to quadruple to a worth of £248 million by 2012.

Simon Sugar added: 'We're delighted to announce this deal with TomTom. As the market leaders in portable navigation systems they offer first class traffic information and we see a great synergy with the Amscreen digital signage network.

* Ford introduces the auto industry's first-ever production inflatable seat belts, which are designed to provide additional protection for rear-seat occupants, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to head, chest and neck injuries
* Ford's inflatable rear seat belts will debut on the next-generation Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, which goes into production next year; Ford eventually plans to offer inflatable seat belt technology in vehicles globally
* Ford's inflatable rear seat belts spread crash forces over five times more area of the body than conventional seat belts; this helps reduce pressure on the chest and helps control head and neck motion for rear seat passengers
* More than 90 percent of Ford research participants indicated that Ford's inflatable seat belts are similar to or more comfortable than traditional belts, which could help increase the lower rate of rear belt usage

Visit our Rear Inflatable Seat Belt minisite for fact sheets, profiles and multimedia content.

DEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Motor Company is bringing to market the world's first automotive inflatable seat belts, combining attributes of traditional seat belts and air bags to provide an added level of crash safety protection for rear seat occupants.

The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries.

Ford will introduce inflatable rear seat belts on the next-generation Ford Explorer, which goes into production next year for the North American market. Over time, Ford plans to offer the technology in vehicles globally.

'Ford's rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear-seat passengers of all ages, especially for young children who are more vulnerable in crashes,' said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environmental and Safety Engineering. 'This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership, including the most top safety ratings of any automaker.'

Safer and more comfortable
Advances in air bag inflation and seat belt construction methods have enabled Ford and its suppliers to develop inflatable seat belts that are designed to deploy over a vehicle occupant's torso and shoulder in 40 milliseconds in the event of a crash.

In everyday use, the inflatable belts operate like conventional seat belts and are safe and compatible with infant and children safety car and booster seats. In Ford's research, more than 90 percent of those who tested the inflatable seat belts found them to be similar to or more comfortable than a conventional belt because they feel padded and softer. That comfort factor could help improve the 61 percent rear belt usage rate in the U.S., which compares to 82 percent usage by front seat passengers, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

'Ford is pioneering inflatable seat belt technology to help enhance crash safety protection, while encouraging more people to buckle up with a more comfortable belt,' said Paul Mascarenas, Ford vice president, Engineering, Global Product Development.

In the event of a frontal or side crash, the inflatable belt's increased diameter more effectively holds the occupant in the appropriate seating position, helping to reduce the risk of injury.

Vehicle safety sensors determine the severity of the collision in the blink of an eye and deploy the inflatable belts' air bags. Each belt's tubular air bag inflates with cold compressed gas, which flows through a specially designed buckle from a cylinder housed below the seat.

The inflatable belt's accordion-folded bag breaks through the belt fabric as it fills with air, expanding sideways across the occupant's body in about the same amount of time it takes a car traveling at highway speed to cover a yard of distance.

The use of cold compressed gas instead of a heat-generating chemical reaction – which is typical of traditional air bag systems – means the inflated belts feel no warmer on the wearer's body than the ambient temperature. The inflatable belts also fill at a lower pressure and a slower rate than traditional air bags, because the device does not need to close a gap between the belt and the occupant.

'It's a very simple and logical system, but it required extensive trial and error and testing over several years to prove out the technology and ensure precise reliable performance in a crash situation,' said Srini Sundararajan, safety technical leader for Ford research and advance engineering.

The inflated belt helps distribute crash force energy across five times more of the occupant's torso than a traditional belt, which expands its range of protection and reduces risk of injury by diffusing crash pressure over a larger area, while providing additional support to the head and neck. After deployment, the belt remains inflated for several seconds before dispersing its air through the pores of the air bag.

Ford's safety leadership record continues to grow
The inflatable seat belt debuting on the next-generation Ford Explorer continues Ford's record of safety innovation. Ford today has more 5-star U.S. government ratings and 'Top Safety Picks' from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other automaker.

Ford was the first automaker to introduce seat belts in 1955 and led the way in making driver and front-passenger air bags standard in most vehicles by 1993.

This year, Ford introduced radar-enabled Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning with Brake Support and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA). These technologies – introduced on the new 2010 Ford Taurus and Fusion – help drivers avoid potential dangerous crash situations using radar to detect the relative position of other vehicles and warn the driver with a combination of visual and audio alerts.

Ford's other recent seat belt and air bag innovations include the industry-first BeltMinder system in 2000, which the U.S. government credited with increasing front belt usage by 5 percent in Ford vehicles. On the 2002 Explorer, Ford launched the industry's first rollover-activated side curtain air bags – called Safety Canopy – as well as Roll Stability Control technology that goes a step beyond traditional stability control systems by helping measure and prevent side-to-side skidding and dangerous situations that could lead to rollovers.

Ford also introduced on the 2009 F-150 and 2010 Taurus some of the industry's first pressure-based air bag technologies that help deploy side air bags up to 30 percent faster.

About Ford Motor Company
Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles across six continents. With about 200,000 employees and about 90 plants worldwide, the company's automotive brands include Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Volvo.

CINCINNATI - Since 1946, more than 9 million people have visited Duke Energy's lobby at Fourth and Main streets to see one of the world's largest model train displays.

Many adults who once visited the train as children now bring their children and grandchildren to experience the wonder of the display. The Duke Energy/CSX Holiday Model Train Display has truly become an annual Cincinnati tradition for many families.

The theme of this year's display is Dreaming of Sugar Plums, Lollipops and Gingerbread. The centerpiece is a curved bridge, decorated with cookies, candy canes and many other sweet treats. On one end there is a cookie bakery with an extra large chimney. Surrounding the bridge are snow-laden trees and dozens of elves and gnomes decorate the area.

Kickoff of the exhibit historically begins on the day after Thanksgiving. To meet that date this year, the assembly and testing of the display has already begun. A small group of Duke Energy employees and retirees spend hundreds of hours throughout the year handcrafting replacement parts and adding to the collection of miniature buildings and structures. These volunteers keep the display running through the holidays until the end of December.

Those Marvelous Miniature Trains
As you watch the miniature trains travel by, you'll discover almost every variety of railroad car that ever traveled our country's railways. You'll see many kinds of powerful locomotives, ranging from the vintage steam-driven models to the more modern diesel-powered streamliners. There are pint-sized passenger trains featuring coach cars, dining cars with tiny tables and chairs, Pullman cars complete with bunks, dome-topped observation cars, baggage cars and postal cars for carrying the U.S. Mail.

The display also features model freight trains with cars capable of carrying almost any cargo imaginable. There are box cars, flat cars, tank cars, low-sided open gondola cars, cattle cars, coal cars, piggy-back cars for hauling trucks, and of course, the ever-popular "little red caboose."

As you compare the older cars to their more modern versions, you'll notice important changes in technology. The refrigerator cars, for example, range from the more primitive models that kept perishables cold with giant blocks of ice, to newer models with built-in refrigeration systems.

To spot one of the work trains, look for the "big hook" car with its large crane. Responsible for railroad maintenance and emergency runs, the work trains even include camp cars with sleeping and cooking facilities for the hard-working crew.

Little Buildings by the Train Tracks
Most of the visitors will quickly recognize miniature homes, shops, factories and farm buildings in the model railroad countryside. But, unless you're familiar with railroad operations, you may not recognize some of the important buildings and structures that are typically found along the railroad right-of-way. Section houses, which are living quarters with tool sheds, function as work locations for railroad crews known as section gangs, responsible for maintenance on specific sections of track.

To keep steam-powered locomotives rolling, it takes a lot of coal to fire the boiler and plenty of water to produce the steam. So, all along the railroad, you'll see miniature coal tipples – the coal storage stations with chutes for filling the locomotive's coal tender – as well as numerous water tanks.

The sand bins serve an important purpose, too, providing trains with sand to be dumped along the track for traction when the rails get wet or icy.

At the railroad terminal, centrally located to serve both the passenger terminal and the freight yards, you'll see additional coal, water and sand facilities as well as the large roundhouse and turntable. The roundhouse functions as a service garage for locomotives. Within the roundhouse, flues are cleaned, equipment is checked and the train is prepared for its next run. The turntable swings the iron horses around, sending them out on the proper track for their next journey.

Railroad stations, or depots, are also found all along the route – varying in size and scope depending on the size of the town. These are, of course, where passengers boarded the trains and where they met their family and friends when they reached their destination.

What This Miniature World Offers
This tradition began in partnership with the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad. Having been chartered in 1827, the B&O Railroad is often called the 'father of American railroads' as the first U.S. railroad for the transportation of passengers and freight. During the early years, the B&O model trains represented exactly what was traveling the real tracks. Every time the B&O took an older locomotive out of service or added a new car to its system, a miniature reproduction was removed or added to the model. Then, in the 1950s, B&O made the decision to bring back some of the retired models for their historical value. So, today, you see early steam locomotives operating on the same tracks with the more modern diesel engines.

Like the real thing, B&O models were built to last. Always handmade, sometimes from the same materials as their life-size prototypes, the models were hand-painted and hand-lettered with authentic railroad paints. The miniature B&O trains are faithful reproductions of the real trains down to the smallest details.

This train display simulates the Cumberland (Maryland) Division of the old B&O, still part of the route traveled by today's CSX Transportation. That's where the main Northwest and Southwest lines, from Chicago and from St. Louis, come together. While the display doesn't represent any particular point on the line or any specific part of the Maryland countryside, it is designed to demonstrate a variety of actual train operations in a landscape typical of the Cumberland region. The elevated area simulates the "Magnolia Cutoff" which is known as the "High Line" and is used exclusively for freight service.

Location, Dates and Hours of Operation, and Website
The Duke Energy building is located on the southwest corner of Fourth and Main streets in Downtown Cincinnati. Access to downtown is available via either Interstate 71 or Interstate 75.

The train display runs from Friday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 31. Normal hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. (Closed Christmas day.)

More information about the holiday model train display is available on the Duke Energy website at www.duke-energy.com/train/.
Digital (JPEG format, 200 ppi) publication quality photographs of last year's model train display are also available on the website at: http://www.duke-energy.com/community/programs/news-quality-photos.asp
Duke Energy's Ohio operations deliver safe, reliable and competitively priced electricity to approximately 680,000 electric customers and natural gas service to approximately 420,000 customers.

Duke Energy, one of the largest electric power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers electricity to approximately 4 million U.S. customers in its regulated jurisdictions. The company has approximately 35,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Midwest and the Carolinas, and natural gas distribution services in Ohio and Kentucky. In addition, Duke Energy has more than 4,000 megawatts of electric generation in Latin America, and is a joint-venture partner in a U.S. real estate company.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is a Fortune 500 company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DUK. More information about the company is available on the Internet at: www.duke-energy.com.

Duke Energy Holiday Model Train Display Fact Sheet

    * The first year of the display was in 1946.
* The display is one of the largest portable models in the world, measures 36½ feet by 47½ feet.
* The Duke Energy building is located on the southwest corner of Fourth and Main streets (139 East Fourth Street) in Downtown Cincinnati. Access to downtown is available via either Interstate 71 or Interstate 75.
* Hours of Operation - The train display operates Friday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 31. Normal hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. (Closed Christmas day.)
* Last year, the model train display had more than 300,000 visitors and 39 countries from around the world.
* The trains are authentic 'O' gauge in which a quarter inch on the model is equivalent to one foot on a real train; rail cars, tracks and buildings are 1/48th actual size.
* The Duke Energy display includes approximately 300 train cars and 50 locomotives on 1,000 feet of track.
* During the holiday season, the trains will travel more than 100,000 scale miles.
* While these trains may seem to travel slowly, they are traveling at actual scale speed. The basic three-track loop is 1/48th of a mile around, representing a full mile of real track. If a model train travels that loop in one minute, it is traveling at 60 miles per hour – not at all slow for a real train.
* This holiday tradition began in 1946 in partnership with the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad. (Having been chartered in 1827 as the first U.S. railroad for the public transportation of passengers and freight, the B&O Railroad is often called the "father of American railroads.")
* In 1936, the B&O Railroad introduced its first model railroad. That original model, with its three main loops, its locomotives and cars, is just part of Duke Energy lobby display.
* The portable model grew, as the railroad grew, through the 40s, the 50s and into the 60s.
* More information about the holiday model train display is available on the Duke Energy website at www.duke-energy.com/train/.

— WebWireID107068 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Oil / Energy

Transportation / Shipping

Utilities

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today announced the appointment of William J. Logue as president of FedEx Freight Corp., a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. and leading provider of regional and long-haul less-than-truckload (LTL) services in North America.

Logue will succeed Douglas G. Duncan, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Freight Corp., who is retiring effective Feb. 28, 2010.

Today Wärtsilä opens a new workshop in Stockholm, Sweden. The new service centre is intended to further increase Wärtsilä's wide service offering, both for the marine market and power plant and industrial customers. The new workshop will cater to increased demand for additional after-sales support in the region. The workshop is located at Beckholmen, a small island near the centre of Stockholm.

The new, state-of-the-art workshop provides qualified in-situ capacity and field support and offers a wide range of service functions, including propulsion system repairs, engine component overhaul work and other services. Initially, the facility will be served by 12 highly trained personnel, and additional field-service engineers will be recruited during the coming months.

Wärtsilä currently serves the area from Wärtsilä Sweden's main facilities in Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden, and since 2006 also from a smaller workshop in Sundbyberg close to Stockholm. Wärtsilä currently employs over 300 people in Sweden.

Mr Bo Dahlén, President & General Manager Services, Wärtsilä in Sweden, says: 'Through investing in this workshop we want to ensure the best support for our customers. We have seen an increase in the number of requests for our services on the east coast, and our facilites in Sundbyberg have become too limited to allow us to adequately support these needs. Our marine customers will now have better options for service in the Stockholm area, which might lead to more companies establishing in the region'.

Wärtsilä's investment in the 700m2 service centre at Beckholmen is based upon the notable increase in shipping traffic along Sweden's east coast. Several large shipping companies are already operating services from Stockholm, while more and more cruise and ferry vessels are visiting the Swedish capital. The new freight terminal close to Södertälje is also attracting an increase in containership tonnage to the area. The potential for marine services in the area is, therefore, significant.

Pictures from the inauguration will be available at www.wartsila.com

Wärtsilä in brief
Wärtsilä is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets. By emphasising technological innovation and total efficiency, Wärtsilä maximises the environmental and economic performance of the vessels and power plants of its customers.

In 2008, Wärtsilä's net sales totalled EUR 4.6 billion with 19,000 employees. The company has operations in 160 locations in 70 countries around the world. Wärtsilä is listed on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki, Finland.
www.wartsila.com

— WebWireID106943 —

Business Announcements

Commercial Services

Machinery

Maritime / Marine

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

WARRENVILLE, Ill. – Navistar, Inc., concluded an agreement to acquire certain assets and the membership interests of Continental Diesel Systems US, LLC, to manufacture key fuel injection components for its MaxxForce® diesel engines. As part of Navistar's industry leadership strategy, the company also will establish a dedicated research and development facility to support Navistar's diesel power system components. The company, renamed Pure Power Technologies, LLC, will further vertically integrate research and development, engineering and manufacturing capabilities to produce world-class diesel power systems and advanced emissions control systems.

'Pure Power Technologies allows Navistar to seamlessly integrate development and production of our power system component technology as we continue to grow globally,' said Daniel C. Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer. 'This supports our industry leadership strategy to produce great products and will serve as a components technology incubator for Navistar's MaxxForce® brand engines.'

Based in Columbia, South Carolina, Pure Power Technologies will operate a research and development center there as well as a manufacturing plant in nearby Blythewood, South Carolina. The Columbia and Blythewood facilities are former Continental assets. Further, the acquisition of these Continental facilities by Navistar prevents their closing as previously announced by Continental. Navistar and Continental will be working on a product transition plan between now and January to assure the needs of both companies are met.

'Housing our advanced manufacturing technology team near the R&D campus will be a key differentiator for Pure Power Technologies. This will enhance our ability to quickly bring new technologies to market,' said Eric Tech, president, Navistar Engine Group.

'The combined strengths that make up Pure Power Technologies will enable breakthrough performance, lean and rapid development cycles and lower overall system costs,' said Ustian. 'These are critical to our business, as customers around the world continue to demand greater engine performance, more efficient power sources and cleaner running vehicles and equipment.'

'The acquisition of Continental's diesel systems business by Navistar is a win-win situation for all parties,' said Kregg Wiggins, senior vice president NAFTA Powertrain Division for Continental. 'Navistar will acquire key fuel injection technologies used in their diesel engine manufacturing business and many of the employees in the Blythewood and Columbia locations will have an opportunity to gain positions in this new entity."

'Navistar is a true innovator in the design of truck engines, and the company's newest venture will augment South Carolina's ever-growing automotive sector. It is especially gratifying to see Continental and Navistar come to an agreement that will keep existing facilities open and bring new opportunities for the future. Indeed, the company's decision to invest in South Carolina is another strong sign that our business-friendly climate, skilled workforce and exceptional market access continue to attract new investors to our state. We welcome Navistar and Pure Power Technologies to the South Carolina business community and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with them in the years ahead,' said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.

Central SC Alliance President and CEO Mike Briggs stated, "Our team is very pleased with today's important announcement by Navistar. This is quite a testimonial to the company's faith in the highly-skilled workforce that exists at the plant. The Alliance worked very closely with Richland County Council and the South Carolina Department of Commerce in an effort to retain these advanced manufacturing jobs."

Richland County Council Chairman Paul Livingston said, "Today, we are in a global competition to find and save jobs. We are excited to have retained the manufacturing and research and development functions that have been located in Richland County for the past several years. We certainly recognize the possibility for future growth and development and look forward to working with Navistar again. Further, we greatly appreciate Navistar's corporate citizenship and continued involvement in the community."

Pure Power Technologies supports a number of Navistar's strategic business goals: Ensure the continued delivery of innovative MaxxForce® brand engines to the North American on-highway marketplace, including MaxxForce Advanced EGR emissions technology for 2010 and beyond; grow in other automotive and industrial segments in NAFTA countries; partner with new OEM customers in established and emerging markets under Euro emissions regulations; create a global platform for continuous improvement in product quality, performance and fuel-efficiency; develop common quality and manufacturing processes across our engine operations and joint ventures; and support Navistar Global Truck Group and Navistar Global Bus division in non-NAFTA growth areas.

About Navistar
Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) is a holding company whose subsidiaries and affiliates produce International® brand commercial and military trucks, MaxxForce® brand diesel engines, IC Bus™ brand school and commercial buses, Monaco RV brands of recreational vehicles, and Workhorse® brand chassis for motor homes and step vans. It also is a private-label designer and manufacturer of diesel engines for the pickup truck, van and SUV markets. The company also provides truck and diesel engine service parts. Another affiliate offers financing services.

Speed Profiles for Taiwan First to Use Community Input in Asia to Help Drivers Identify Optimal Routes and More Accurately Estimate Travel Times

Singapore – Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location based solutions, today announced the availability of Tele Atlas® Speed Profiles in Taiwan, the first complete historic speed product in Asia built with insight from local drivers that enables navigation system users find the fastest routes and far more accurately estimate travel times. Speed Profiles for Taiwan provides drivers with unique insight into real world traffic patterns across the country's complete navigable road network. With Speed Profiles, drivers can make the best route choices that normally only well-informed locals would select and in turn, also save valuable time and money.

With congested roadways and ever-increasing travel times, users of mapping applications are seeking better ways to travel efficiently, minimize transportation costs and find the optimal routes to their destinations. Speed Profiles aggregates and enhances real speed data from GPS-enabled devices, using consumer driving patterns to provide true average speeds on individual road segments. In contrast, traditional systems use standardized estimates to calculate routes, ignoring hurdles such as traffic lights, school hours and rotaries that can severely impact travel times. Speed Profiles for Taiwan is Tele Atlas' first community-based offering outside of North America and Europe, highlighting the expanding and ever more global role of community in advancing navigation and location-based solutions.

'With Speed Profiles, our regional customers can now deliver solutions that help consumers save time and money, consume less fuel and help preserve the environment, as well as help businesses cut transportation and logistics costs,' said Rik Temmink, Vice President of Product Management, Tele Atlas. 'This is especially important in densely populated countries like Taiwan, whose traffic jams are some of the most complex and chaotic in the world. We are excited to extend availability of this unique and powerful product to Asia and to be the first to deliver a complete solution in the region based on historical driving information.'

Speed Profiles enables route calculations based on highly comprehensive historical travel time and measured speed information. Tele Atlas Speed Profiles is available in 27 countries and territories, covering 35 million kilometers of both directions of roads. The version for Taiwan includes 211,000 kilometers and complete coverage of the navigable road network.

About Tele Atlas
Tele Atlas delivers the digital maps and dynamic content that power many of the world's most essential navigation and location-based services (LBS). Through a combination of its own products and partnerships, Tele Atlas offers map coverage of more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The company was founded in 1984 and has offices in 27 countries around the world.

Alstom has signed two contracts, worth a total value of approximately 450 million euros, known as the Mannheim 9 project, to supply Grosskraftwerk Mannheim AG with new boiler and turbine units at the company's Mannheim power plant in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The new unit* will have an electrical output of over 900 MW and will supply 25% of the Rhein-Neckar region's electricity, the equivalent of approximately 600,000 households. It will replace the existing units 3 and 4 (with an output of only 220 MW each), which will be taken out of service after the commissioning of the new unit in 2013.

Grosskraftwerk Mannheim is a coal-fired cogeneration plant with an installed base of 1675 MW which produces up to 1000 MW of heat as well as electricity, and has been supplying both heat and power to the region for over 85 years. District heating applications such as these help save 200,000 TCE (ton of coal equivalent) primary energy and 300,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The new unit will help increase this figure.

The combined heat and power production significantly contributes to reduce emissions. The new unit will use less coal, reducing the power plant's overall CO2 emissions by about 1 million tonnes per year and conforming to the objectives of the German government, with a strong focus on reducing the country's greenhouse gas emissions.

'Innovative technology such as that installed at Mannheim 9 is essential for reducing CO2 emissions in our customers' coal-fired plants, commented Guy Chardon, Senior Vice President Thermal Products, Alstom Power, and we look forward to further supporting the implementation of cleaner power generation on the German market'.

*The scope of the Mannheim 9 project includes a STF 100 5 casing steam turbine, a Gigatop 2-pole turbogenerator and a condenser, and has been completed by a Tower Type Boiler island with SCR and preheater, including coal bunkers, mills, and auxiliary systems. Alstom will also carry out transportation to the site, full erection, commissioning, trial -run and performance tests both for the steam turbine generator set and the boiler island.

— WebWireID106862 —

Architecture / Construction / Building

Machinery

Mining / Metals

Oil / Energy

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

IBM Global Trucking Study: Fuel Efficiency, High-Tech Features More Important than Brand Name

Fleet Owners Turning to Hybrid Vehicles, Telematics, to Improve Sustainability.

ATLANTA.-IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the findings of a new global study, which shows that trucks will become more fuel efficient, environmentally sound and safer due to the adoption of new technologies throughout the vehicle. The use of these innovations will help truck manufacturers differentiate their vehicles, as the study shows that brand names of trucks are becoming less important.

The Global Truck 2020 Study, titled "Transcending Turbulence," was developed by IBM Global Business Services' Auto practice and the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV). The study -- unveiled here at CALSTART's Hybrid Truck Users Forum National Conference -- comprises interviews with 91 executives in 13 countries, representing the entire truck value chain. CALSTART is an organization dedicated to cleaner transportation.

"IBM's study shows the trucking industry is eager to transform itself," said Sanjay Rishi, vice president and global automotive industry leader for IBM. "Increasingly fleet owners choose cleaner, more fuel efficient trucks that also have advanced systems to make transport more efficient."

The study indicates that truck industry executives believe smart systems will play an increasingly prominent role in trucks as well as transportation networks. A few key findings:

    * Technology -- 71% of respondents said technology will be one of the most important external forces impacting the industry in 2020, up from 61% today. Technology will not be limited to the trucks themselves but will be embedded in roads and traffic signals increasing the interaction and predictive analytical safety capabilities of these transport carriers. For example, telematics will impact everything about the vehicle.

Truck manufacturers that effectively employ telematics to build solutions for their customers stand to successfully differentiate and redefine their brands. Telematics will reduce service time by allowing remote and faster diagnostics and also will enable prognostic capabilities and proactive servicing. Today's vehicle diagnostic techniques typically require the technician to physically connect to the vehicle. However, it won't be long before telematics capabilities enable remote diagnostics of a vehicle's issues and use of remote patches when possible.

In addition, manufacturers will use telematics to provide a real-time remote read of a vehicle's parameters, allowing for proactive service or other action based on the reading. For example, if a potential problem is identified in a truck, the
operator will be able to pull the truck from service before it ends up on the side of the road with a problem.

Telematics will also enable stronger solutions for vehicle safety that have traditionally been addressed through manual methods and training. For example, automated speed controls linked to the navigation system could slow a truck down when its driver
approaches blind curves, or automated braking could be applied if a truck approached an exit with too much speed. Not only will telematics be useful in avoiding accidents, but data recorded through telematics will also be essential in protecting companies
from litigation when accidents occur.

    * Globalization -- 54% of the executives surveyed said that globalization will be one of the most important external forces impacting the truck industry in 2020, up from 48% today. Truck manufacturers are just beginning to establish their global footprint, while light vehicle manufacturers have fought the hard battles of platform creation, process standardization and the development of global supply chains.

    * Sustainability -- 48% of respondents said that sustainability will be one of the most important external forces in 2020, up from 32% today. Environmental and fuel efficiency standards along with new safety capabilities mandated by government regulations will force the trucking industry to change aggressively over the next decade.

Solutions relating to driver assistance, regulatory compliance and sustainability are closely linked. For example, a manufacturer might offer a solution that uses telematics to help determine the roads on which a vehicle is approved to travel and communicates that information to the driver, assisting both the driver and regulatory compliance.

"Truck transportation drives our economy; goods movement fills our stores and supplies our factories. But those benefits come with costs that are causing rapid change," said Bill Van Amburg, senior vice president of CALSTART, an organization dedicated to clean transportation. "That's why IBM's study is critical. It highlights the emerging needs of truck customers, the technical and environmental challenges for the industry and lays out a roadmap for clean and profitable growth for the future."

Truck 2020: Transcending Turbulence was produced by IBM's Institute for Business Value, which provides strategic insights and recommendations that address critical business challenges to help clients capitalize on new opportunities. The Institute comprises consultants around the world who conduct research and analysis in 17 industries and across five functional disciplines, including human capital management, financial management, corporate strategy, supply chain management and customer relationship management.

— WebWireID106729 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Computer Software

Environment

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

LANSING, Mich.– Central Michigan Kenworth was recently opened in Lansing to enhance customer support following the conversion of the dealership from another truck manufacturer to Kenworth.

A member of the Kenworth dealer network of more than 300 locations in the United States and Canada, Central Michigan Kenworth is a full-service dealership and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eastern Michigan Kenworth. The dealership is conveniently located on 7.5 acres of land near the corner of South Cedar Street, a major business thoroughfare, and East Jolly Road, about one-half mile north of U.S. Interstate 96.

'By opening this new location, we're offering customers in a large, previously underserved geographical area, more access to award-winning trucks and service from Kenworth and to aftermarket parts from PACCAR Parts,' said Jesse Berger, Eastern Michigan Kenworth dealer principal.

'Parts and service availability in this central part of Michigan is key. By locating a Kenworth dealership here, we just cut the drive time in half for many customers,' Berger said. 'We're also offering trucking companies located to the north, in towns like Flint, and to the south, in towns like Jackson, a convenient stop for service.'

The dealership features a 13,500 square-foot service department with seven service bays, including a wash bay and a bay dedicated to Kenworth PremierCare® ExpressLube and AC preventive maintenance services. It also features a PacLease franchise and an interior showroom. The dealership's parts department has 600 square feet of retail space, 4,000 square feet of parts storage, and a parts delivery truck.

Kenworth's quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as the Eastern Michigan Kenworth organization, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for 'Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service'*

'Lansing offers some great opportunities, not only because it is the capital of Michigan and the state's fifth largest city, but also because it's largely a rural area,' Berger said. 'With state agencies and Michigan State University located in Lansing, the potential market for medium duty trucks is large. That market will be well served with the medium duty and lighter heavy duty vocational models that Kenworth offers.'

Berger said he is also pleased that he was able to keep the Lansing location open following a decision by another truck manufacturer to exit the market. 'Not only are we keeping a lot of good people employed, but we're also offering customers access to quality Kenworth trucks and service,' Berger added. 'That's a great feeling.'

Central Michigan Kenworth is located at 5103 South Cedar Street. The dealership is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The location is also open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The telephone number is 517-394-7000 or toll-free at 800-289-1610. Central Michigan Kenworth's parent company, Eastern Michigan Kenworth, also has locations in Dearborn and Clinton Township, Mich.

Kenworth Truck Company is the manufacturer of The World's Best® heavy and medium duty trucks. Kenworth is an industry leader in providing fuel-saving technology solutions that help increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The company's dedication to the green fleet includes aerodynamic trucks, medium duty diesel-electric hybrids, liquefied natural gas trucks, and the Kenworth Clean Power® no-idle system. This year, Kenworth became the first truck manufacturer to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Excellence award in recognition of its environmentally friendly products. In addition, Kenworth is the recipient of the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates awards for Highest in Customer Satisfaction for both Over the Road Segment and Pickup and Delivery Segment Class 8 Trucks. Kenworth's Internet home page is at www.kenworth.com. Kenworth. Power and Associates 2009 Heavy-Duty Customer Satisfaction Study(SM). Study based on 2,492 total U.S. responses measuring 4 (over-the-road), 5 (pickup & delivery), 8 (dealer service) manufacturers and measures opinions of principal maintainers.

STAMFORD, Conn., The majority of traditional automakers are taking a careful but positive approach to the development of electric vehicles (EVs), according to Gartner, Inc. This cautious attitude is aimed at minimizing infrastructure-related risks and maximizing return from previous investments made to optimize combustion engines.

Gartner predicts that in industrialized automotive markets, battery-powered vehicles (that is, plug-in full-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) will represent 5 to 8 percent of all vehicles sold using various types of propulsion technologies by 2020. Battery-powered vehicles will account for 15 to 20 percent of all vehicle sales by 2030.

"Prospects for the successful development, launch and sale of EVs in industrialized global markets are maturing as a result of automotive industry and technology advancements, infrastructure developments, as well as societal and political trends," said Thilo Koslowski, research vice president at Gartner. "These factors have the potential to lower costs for EVs, simplify the customer ownership experience and accelerate overall market adoption."

Mr. Koslowski highlighted the key factors that will impact EV adoption in the future:

Automotive Industry and Technology Advancements
To test EV market acceptance and prepare for a potential boost in EV production, virtually all global mainstream automobile manufacturers are planning to bring at least one EV model to market in the next four years; some plan to do so even sooner. The growth in EVs is also opening the door to emerging vehicle manufacturers that specialize in the design, development and sale of battery-powered automobiles. Furthermore, the emergence of new supply chain partners that provide engineering, powertrain components, testing and battery offerings continues.

At the same time, key technological advancements are prerequisites for creating dependable battery-powered vehicles in the future and include:

   1. Increased energy density for various chemical compositions in EV batteries and new powertrain designs with increased reliability
2. Advanced software control models (e.g., for energy, battery and temperature management)
3. Expanded standardization efforts, such as the SAE J1772 initiative for standardizing EV charging plugs, which is likely to be adopted by most OEMs this year

EV Infrastructure Developments
Infrastructure developments require massive investments to provide users with a seamless transportation experience for battery-powered vehicles. To this end, infrastructure efforts need to accomplish new forms of collaboration between vehicle manufacturers, energy providers, charging service providers and vehicle owners. Gartner predicts that EV brokers will play a critical role in achieving this required collaboration aimed at simplifying EV ownership, but brokers' business models will need to adapt to a changing value chain over the next five years.

Societal and Political Trends
Consumer awareness about the operational costs of passenger vehicle ownership and the desire to meet environmental objectives has grown steadily in developed countries over the last three years in response to rising awareness about global warming, higher fuel costs and vehicle emissions. At the same time, regional governments have also increased their financial support for EV development.

Gartner predicts that governmental support for EV and other alternative propulsion technologies will continue until competitive market dynamics are strong enough to ensure sufficient momentum. Governments will also play a vital role in enforcing the standardization of critical technology elements that will accelerate infrastructure deployments. For example, governments could require that automakers make battery charge information available to other companies in order to develop reliable charging solutions and manage electric grid requirements.

Additional information is available in the Gartner report "The Electric Vehicle's Value Chain and Technology Evolution." The report is available on Gartner's Website at http://www.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?ref=g_search&id=1179817&subref=simplesearch.

About Gartner:
Gartner, Inc.
