Mainz/Utrecht, When the new international timetable goes into effect in mid-December 2009, DB Schenker Rail will put an additional 32 modern, eco friendly electric locomotives into operation for freight transportation between the Netherlands and Germany. DB Schenker Rail has had 26 comparable locomotives in operation for international transportation between the Netherlands and Germany for two years.

The 32 new locomotives will replace older diesel locomotives, says Edmund Schlummer, Head of Region Central and Member of the Management Board of DB Schenker Rail. By introducing the new locomotives, we are helping make rail transportation more eco friendly.

With a performance of 6,400 kW and a tractive effort on starting of 300 kN, the series-189 traction units from DB Schenker are intended for heavy freight trains along international routes.

In addition to the existing systems in Germany, the traction units also feature the ATB (first generation) and ETCS (level 1 and 2) train protection systems commonly used in the Netherlands. The locomotives will be compatible both with the traditional 1,500 volt direct current overhead line voltage traditionally used in the Netherlands and with the Betuwe route (25,000 volt alternating current).

— WebWireID108223 —

Environment

Machinery

Oil / Energy

Transportation / Shipping

Travel Industry

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is the first in the US to have a deep water rated remotely operated vehicle. The vehicle they have chosen is Saab's Seaeye Falcon DR.

When an experimental plane crashed into the ocean off Catalina Island near Los Angeles, search and recovery proved impossible. The depth of water and strength of the currents made conditions too dangerous for divers. But since March this year, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) have had the 1000 metre rated remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Falcon DR, from Saab, ready for such investigations.

Significantly extended capability

Saab's Seaeye Falcon DR significantly extends the LASD's inspection and recovery capability, enabling the reach of larger areas offshore and around Los Angeles, and the possibility to undertake Homeland Security operations. The ROV will now aid the recovery of previously unrecoverable boats and aircraft, including an inspection of the Catalina site.
Contributing to diver safety

The Seaeye Falcon DR saves valuable dive time and contributes to diver safety. By using the Falcon's onboard camera and high intensity lights, the ROV operator can pinpoint what the diver cannot see and direct the diver to the location of interest. The ROV can also keep a watchful eye on the diver and transport the diver's tools and equipment. A range of tools and survey kit can easily be added to and changed for different missions, such as explosives detection.

The Seaeye Falcon DR is the second Falcon bought by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. The first was a 300 metre rated model used for rapid deployment during in-shore search and recovery operations.

— WebWireID108189 —

Aerospace / Defense

Airlines / Aviation

Government

Maritime / Marine

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

First In-vehicle Emergency Calls over Wireless Networks Completed

SAN DIEGO - Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, and Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI), a leader in providing next generation telematics solutions, have successfully demonstrated the data transmission technology of the upcoming pan-European, in-vehicle emergency call (eCall) standard over commercial wireless networks at the 12th eSafety Forum Plenary meeting, 'eCall Summit', held in Brussels, Belgium on October 29, 2009.

The use of eCall to deploy emergency assistance will save lives and reduce the social burden of road accidents. The creation of eCall standards and requirements has been triggered by the eSaftety Forum, an initiative of the relevant stakeholders, brought together by the European Commission. An eCall is generated either manually by vehicle occupants, or automatically via activation of in-vehicle sensors, in the case when an accident occurs. When activated, the eCall-enabled, in-vehicle system establishes a 112-voice connection directly with the relevant Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). At the same time, a Minimum Set of Data- including key information about the accident such as time, location and vehicle description - is sent to the PSAP operator receiving the voice call.

Technology provided by HTI and Qualcomm, including an eCall in-band modem, was used to make a call to a prototype of an eCall-enabled PSAP located in Germany. Once the voice call was established, the eCall in-band modem protocol was used to transmit the Minimum Set of Data to the PSAP. The eCall modem was fully integrated on the Qualcomm QSC6270™ chipset embedded in the demonstration unit.

'Safety and security is the cornerstone of our telematics offering,' said Erik Goldman, president of Hughes Telematics, Inc. 'Working with Qualcomm to support this initiative in Europe confirms our commitment to the global industry to enhance driver safety and provide a timely and efficient response during emergency situations.'

'Qualcomm has spent the last several years developing eCall technology and standards to further the public objective of helping to save lives on roads,' explains Ed Tiedemann, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm. 'We are pleased to collaborate with Hughes Telematics on developing and demonstrating an eCall solution that will ultimately enable automakers to integrate this capability in all vehicles."

About Hughes Telematics, Inc.
Hughes Telematics, Inc. (NYSE Amex: HTC) is a leader in implementing the next generation of connected services for the automobile. Centered on a core platform of safety and security offerings, the company develops and manages vehicle- and driver-centric solutions to enhance the driving and ownership experience.

Agreement Delivers Freshest Maps of US for Accurate Mobile Resource Tracking Solutions

Lebanon, NH and Saskatoon, SK, Canada - Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, and QA Technologies, a leading-edge telematics company providing innovative fleet management solutions, have announced a multi-year license agreement whereby QA Technologies will use Tele Atlas maps and location content to power its fleet monitoring and management systems.

Through the agreement, QA Technologies fleet management solutions will leverage Tele Atlas digital maps and Address Points for the United States. These products provide users with exact street name and address, zip codes, longitude and latitude and other critical information to allow for accurate, efficient location-based vehicle tracking. With Tele Atlas maps and content, QA Technologies' fleet vehicle tracking service can report vehicle locations to the nearest address and provide a summary of each vehicle's data, including total daily running time, number of stops and improved dispatching.

'As we strive to provide flexible fleet management solutions for both major enterprises and the millions of independent truck drivers, we are excited to work with Tele Atlas to leverage the newest maps and content,' said Brock Eidem, CEO, QA Technologies. 'By ensuring our tools have the most powerful location content, we can enable our customers to save fuel costs and increase the visibility and efficiency of their mobile workers, which will also help to improve customer service.'

'With lower consumer spending, reduced freight volumes and volatile fuel prices, trucking companies have increasingly invested in fleet management systems to maximize their efficiency,' said Jonathon Husby, Vice President of Automotive, Transportation and Telematics, Tele Atlas. 'By working with QA Technologies and supporting the company's expansion into new industries, we can enable cost-effective solutions that help mobile enterprises be more competitive and improve profitability.'

QA Technologies offers two core fleet management solutions, AccutrAVL and AccutreQ.net, along with recently released AccuFreight.net. AccutrAVL's fleet knowledge tools are designed to fit commercial service fleets by providing owners with real-time, downloadable reports to identify expenditures. It helps create a nationwide network to link freight brokers with independent drivers, communicating which trucks are loaded or unloaded and allowing them to be easily matched to the nearest pick-up or drop-off point. With AccuFreight, managers no longer need to call multiple truck drivers to match shipping routes, cargos, trailers or schedules and can greatly improve efficiencies.

About Tele Atlas
Tele Atlas delivers the digital maps and dynamic content that power many of the world's most essential navigation and location-based services (LBS).

KIRKLAND, Wash., Kenworth Truck Company's manufacturing facility in Renton, Wash., has been selected to participate in a co-sponsored U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) project to provide input toward development of an international energy management standard for manufacturing plants.

'Kenworth is honored to be selected to participate in this prestigious Northwest Energy Management Demonstration Project co-sponsored by the DOE and NEAA,' said Marilyn Santangelo, Kenworth assistant general manager for operations. 'Kenworth's Renton plant is committed to protecting the environment and conserving natural resources through effective management of energy used to support the manufacturing process.'

'Our environmental efforts are of special importance, and this project offers a significant avenue to contribute to the development of enhanced best practices in manufacturing energy efficiency,' added Reid Nabarrete, Kenworth-Renton plant manager.

Kenworth is just one of five companies in the Pacific Northwest selected for the project. Kenworth's selection was based on its environmental accomplishments, which include the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Excellence award, and 2009 Green Washington manufacturing award from Seattle Business magazine. Kenworth's Renton plant holds the prestigious ISO 14001:2004 certification for effective environmental management systems established to help build Class 8 trucks in an environmentally sustainable manner. The plant also earned a 2009 Best Workplace for Recycling and Waste Reduction Award from King County's Solid Waste Division, and a King County Industrial Waste Program Commitment-to-Compliance Award for five consecutive years of outstanding compliance with the plant's industrial wastewater discharge permit.

Participating companies will be among the first in the United States that may become certified under the pending American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited plant certification, which includes conforming to ANSI's Management System for Energy standard. This standard will serve as U.S. input for an even more far-reaching international energy management standard known as ISO 50001, which is expected to be released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011.

Upon successful completion in 2011, project participants will have embedded sustainable energy management strategies and systems that lead to continuous energy savings, reduced operational costs and significant reduction of carbon emissions. These results will showcase the tangible advantages of energy efficiency as a sustainable and profitable business model and bolster the competitiveness of participating companies within the global marketplace.

Certified Tests Show GPS devices with Tele Atlas maps win for address availability, routing and destination accuracy

Lebanon, NH, Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, today revealed results of tests that show Tele Atlas maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico rate highest in terms of quality and reliability, and in certain markets are up to 10% more accurate than competing maps. Tele Atlas quality testing uses a process certified by the TÜV SÜD, a leading global testing and inspection organization with 14,000 experts providing consulting, testing, certification and training services at more than 600 locations in Europe, North America and Asia.

Road tests were conducted in the last year in randomly selected markets, covering 50 routes and 300 miles in each market and using the latest commercially available GPS devices from two leading brands. Tests based on the processes certified by the TÜV SÜD focused on the three questions that determine map accuracy:

      • Destination availability; can users find any address or point of interest (POI) they want in the system?

      • Routing calculation and guidance; are users routed to their destination without problems?

      • Destination accuracy; do users arrive at the door of the exact address or POI selected?

The results are that Tele Atlas maps are rated highest because they have the most addresses and POIs and the most accurate routes, helping drivers save time and money. In the United States, Tele Atlas maps won in two-thirds of tested markets. In Canada and Mexico, Tele Atlas maps were more accurate in every tested market.

'Whether you are driving your daily commute, running a local search on your mobile device or routing an emergency vehicle to a critical site, map quality remains fundamental to ensuring these applications perform reliably,' said Thomas Gilligan, Senior Director of Quality, Tele Atlas. 'We began working with the TÜV SÜD last year to ensure our testing processes meet the high expectations of our industry customers and their end users. We are pleased that our results for North America continue to reinforce the excellent benchmarks Tele Atlas established in past map accuracy tests.'

TÜV SÜD's audit of the Tele Atlas test methodology included an evaluation of the company's processes for gathering, sampling and validating data. Tele Atlas' tests are designed to adhere to the certified processes and to assess overall performance of a map database from the user's perspective. The same test methods have been incorporated by many of the world's leading car manufacturers.

'TÜV SÜD audited and certified Tele Atlas' procedures for testing its map database to ensure that the quality processes implemented meet consumers' expectations for high quality and reliability. We remain impressed with the company's dedication to quality assurance,' said Martin Grzebellus, Managing Director, NavCert, part of the TÜV SÜD group.

Tele Atlas maps in North America delivers navigable cover for more than 7.4 million miles and include more than 12.1 million points of interest (POIs). To update its maps, Tele Atlas captures and verifies changes from thousands of global sources, ranging from government documents and public safety officials to construction companies and truck drivers, as well as satellite and aerial imagery. The company is also the first to use contributions from tens of millions of individual drivers. This community input is backed by stringent review and validation processes and further enables Tele Atlas to create fresh maps and deliver a better experience for end users of its maps.

About Tele Atlas
Tele Atlas delivers the digital maps and dynamic content that power many of the world's most essential navigation and location-based services (LBS). Through a combination of its own products and partnerships, Tele Atlas offers map coverage of more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The company was founded in 1984 and has offices in 27 countries around the world. Today, Tele Atlas maps are developed with the insight of a community of millions of GPS system users worldwide, who are adding to the company's unmatched network of sources to track and validate changes in real time, and deliver the best digital maps and dynamic content. At some point in 2010, the number of cars will be increased and car2go will be made accessible to all Austin residents and students.

The car2go system is straightforward. 200 smart fortwo vehicles are made available within the city for all registered car2go members. This fleet of vehicles can be accessed 24/7. After a one-time registration process, the customers can use the service on the spot by accessing any available vehicle on the street, or can book in advance through the online reservation process. One significant difference from traditional car-sharing programs is that car2go offers cars on demand and the customers may use the vehicle for as long as they like, without committing to a specific return time. Furthermore, car2go allows users to make one way trips. Charges are not based on distance, but on time – with rates starting by the minute.

'car2go is an innovative answer to current and future mobility needs in urban areas', says Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. 'We are pleased with the success we achieved in Ulm, Germany – the first car2go city - and we are ready for the next logical step on our way to an international rollout.'

Austin becomes first international partner for car2go

The City of Austin is the first North American city to partner with car2go. This launch follows the successful implementation of the first car2go pilot in October 2008 in the southern German city of Ulm.

The 200 smarts of the first pilot are rented 500 to 1,000 times per day and they are used by 15,000 customers which equals more than 15 percent of the citizens who possess a driver's license in Ulm. 90 percent of the participants take advantage of the unique offer to use car2go spontaneously without booking in advance and for one-way trips.

'The City of Austin is committed to identifying and implementing solutions to address the challenges associated with urban growth, mobility and environmental sustainability,' said Mayor Lee Leffingwell. 'This pilot-program partnership between car2go and the City of Austin represents a significant step toward helping us alleviate congestion, reduce emissions and increase the use of public transportation.'

For the pilot, the pick up and drop off area is limited to the greater downtown Austin area which has an expansion of about 17 square miles where more than 60,000 employees work. The use of a car2go vehicle includes all city-controlled parking fees: No need to feed the meters! car2go is paying a usage fee to the City of Austin in the form of free driving minutes for employees driving on City business.

'Facilitating innovative transportation solutions is integral to the City of Austin's goal of becoming the best-managed city in America,' said City Manager Marc Ott. 'By promoting large-scale car sharing, we can help address mobility challenges in and around our urban core, ultimately reducing the burden on city center traffic and parking.'

More than 13,000 city employees have the opportunity to use the smart vehicles not only for business but also for private use. Billing is handled with the same degree of simplicity and flexibility as every aspect of car2go – the rates are all-inclusive: fuel, maintenance, insurance, miles and parking. Competitive hourly or daily rates apply to longer rental periods. The trademark of car2go is its user friendly system, developed to meet and exceed the needs of customers. A car2go service team on the ground will handle daily maintenance of the vehicles. The service team will also ensure the vehicles are fueled and clean. If customers want to refuel the vehicles by themselves, they can use a pre-paid credit card found in the glove compartment of the car2go. The time for refueling the car will be credited to the customer with 10 minutes of free driving.

'The goal of the Austin pilot project is to gather experience we can use to ensure the public launch of car2go in North America in 2010 is successful,' says Nicholas Cole, CEO of car2go North America LLC. 'In the second phase we will increase the number of cars in Austin and open the service to the public. We are also talking to a large number of cities in North America and Europe about additional rollouts of car2go.'

The smart fortwo vehicles for the Austin pilot phase are provided by the smart USA Distributor LLC. The vehicle size and its maneuverability are perfect for car sharing programs in urban areas.

— WebWireID107951 —

Automotive

Environment

Government

Politics

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Innovative Sensor Hardware, Software and Collaboration Tools to Provide Enhanced Visibility and Collaboration During the Journey of a Shipment

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), today announced SenseAwareSM powered by FedEx, a next generation, first-of-its-kind information service that combines a GPS sensor device and a web-based collaboration platform. Developed by the FedEx innovation team, SenseAware will provide increased access to information between business partners and customers to aid in the management of supply chain interactions and will target the life sciences industry at launch.

Available in the spring of 2010, SenseAware is an open, highly adaptive and easy-to-use sensor information sharing platform. It is a multi-modal solution that will serve customers who desire near real-time visibility and insight into their shipments. SenseAware will provide business decision makers the ability to quickly and easily collaborate on many types of information data across their global supply chain.

SenseAware is permitted by the Federal Aviation Administration to be used during flight on FedEx aircraft and will allow customers to monitor in-transit conditions during ground transportation.

A SenseAware device riding with a FedEx shipment can provide the following information:

    * Precise temperature readings
* A shipment's exact location
* When a shipment is opened or if the contents have been exposed to light
* Real-time alerts and analytics between trusted parties regarding the above vital signs of a shipment

SenseAware can be easily adopted as it does not require a costly software installation, infrastructure or large managed-service commitments. The added flexibility of the SenseAware device enables it to be used for single shipments or in large palletized shipments.

"One of the basic needs we saw was a sensor-based logistics industry that wasn't solidifying as quickly as we thought it should around useful sharing of sensor information," said Robert B. Carter, executive vice president and chief information officer, FedEx Corp. "We developed a point-of-view that sharing sensor information dynamically and in useful ways with supply chain partners proved too difficult, so we attacked this on a number of fronts and the result is SenseAware."

Life Science Industry First to Benefit from SenseAware

Available in 2010, SenseAware will initially target the health care and life sciences industry. SenseAware was created through intensive research and beta-testing with customers within those industries. Pilot customers immediately recognized the benefits of the technology during an internal testing phase and realized the potential to shorten inventory turnaround time on closed loop shipments by having complete inbound visibility to all shipments.

"Life science companies are looking to squeeze more value out of their existing data, both upstream and downstream, to improve workflow, process efficiency, and strategic insight across the enterprise," says Eric Newmark, research manager, IDC Health Insights. "With SenseAware, FedEx is seeking to give business users next-generation sensing capabilities, coupled with an information service that provides a new level of visibility to critical information. This collaborative model could help businesses overcome many of the challenges commonly faced in delivering world-class healthcare services."

Shipments within the life sciences industry are often very high value and/or extremely time sensitive. In this industry, knowing the location of such packages during the shipping process is highly desirable. By providing extensive aggregated data shipment information, the technology will help life science customers comply with audits and quality checks, which occur regularly on such highly regulated products, For example, within the industry, many shipments must remain within a specified ambient or cold-chain temperature range to be effective for use in patient care. By having the correct and necessary data, users can make the proper business decisions to replenish or make other arrangements to meet the business requirement.

A limited number of SenseAware sensor devices are expected to be available during the initial launch for U.S. customers within the healthcare and life sciences industry.

About SenseAware

SenseAware combines the power of FedEx innovation and the FedEx brand to bring a unique service offering that is first of its kind in the FedEx portfolio.

"SenseAware is more than a technology solution for the supply chain," said Laurie A. Tucker, senior vice president of marketing, FedEx Services. "SenseAware combines the power of the FedEx brand and heritage of innovation with a new product and platform to serve the customers of the broad transportation and logistics industry. We are motivated and driven to create, market and cultivate yet another breakthrough that has the capability to transform the life sciences industry."

Customers and businesses can learn more about SenseAware on www.senseaware.com.

About FedEx

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. With annual revenues of $34 billion, the company offers integrated business applications through operating companies competing collectively and managed collaboratively, under the respected FedEx brand.

Contest 'YouRail – Visions of Modern Transportation' is already a considerable success on the internet

Bombardier Transportation has launched a worldwide web-based contest for the creation of innovative interior designs for trains. 'YouRail – Visions of Modern Transportation' calls on consumers to unleash their creativity and express their vision of future train interiors.

'While input from rail operators, our direct customers, is still crucial, this contest enables us to engage passengers directly to better understand their needs and propose innovative solutions,' says Martin Ertl, Chief Innovation Officer Bombardier Transportation. He adds: 'Within a few days we have received 1.000 entries. More than 780 web users are already active members of the YouRail community and are taking part in what is called open innovation. This demonstrates the potential this kind of end-user involvement also has in our business.'

Participants in the competition are invited to submit their proposals for different categories over the internet. Bombardier executives and external experts will select the winning design and award prizes worth 10.000 euros ($15.000 US) for the best entries. The successful designs will be presented by Bombardier in September 2010 at the world's most important rail technology trade show, InnoTrans, in Berlin.

Chris Antonopoulos, Vice President Sales Bombardier Transportation, and member of the YouRail jury, emphasizes: 'We are the first rail technology company to create an online innovation community. It helps us to anticipate end-user needs, to identify trends and lead users.' Mr Antonopoulos stresses the growing importance of interior design for rail as part of Bombardier's strategic effort to make train travel more comfortable and attractive for passengers. He explains: 'Like cars or planes, we compete at the same or even higher levels of comfort and convenience. Vehicles like our new high-speed platform ZEFIRO and regional trains like the TALENT 2 for Germany or the French SPACIUM are but a few examples of sleek, modern and inviting trains from Bombardier which offer customized comfort and attractive travel environments. YouRail is an excellent tool to get even closer to the consumer's voice vis-à-vis future projects.'

The contest YouRail – Visions of Modern Transportation can be accessed at www.yourail-design.bombardier.com. It is open to everybody interested in innovative interior train design.

Participants can submit freely created designs for three types of travel: leisure, business and commuter. In a second category, a 3D configuration tool can be used to design seat covers to create inviting interiors. Deadline for submissions is December 14, 2009.

— WebWireID107932 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Carrier Transicold has launched the Purfresh™ Transport service under an exclusive agreement with Purfresh, Inc., providing the container shipping industry with a cost-effective, chemical-free means to protect produce cargoes from spoilage. Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier Corp., a business unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Purfresh Transport technology purifies air and surfaces inside the container, helping to eliminate molds, yeasts and microscopic bacteria that can attack and ruin a container-load of perishables. Produce quality is preserved—without the use of undesirable chemicals, resulting in better firmness, weight, sugar content, taste and value.

'With Carrier's Purfresh Transport service, a strong protective link has been added to the global cold chain,' said Luke DiMaggio, Carrier Transicold general manager, Global Service Operations, Container Products, in making the announcement with Purfresh at the Intermodal Association of North America's Intermodal Expo. 'The Purfresh Transport system can help assure goods reach their destinations in optimal condition, maximizing our customers' return on investment.'

The Purfresh Transport service can improve customer profitability by reducing typical loss related to decay and food degradation, thus improving the yield of perishable cargoes, according to DiMaggio.

'Globally, up to 20 percent of post-harvest losses on average occur during transit,' DiMaggio said. 'Purfresh technology utilizes ozone to help eliminate bacteria that spoils cargo and profits for growers, exporters, importers and shipping lines.'

Carrier will lease Purfresh Transport active purification systems to customers on a per-trip basis as part of its SeaCare™ Solutions program, saving customers the expense of large capital outlays. Carrier's worldwide network of service centers will handle logistics, installation and removal of the Purfresh Transport systems on refrigerated containers prior to loading and after unloading at their final destinations.

Purfresh Transport service will be available in the first quarter 2010, starting with shipping lanes originating in Chile and serving ports on the U.S. West Coast. Carrier plans to roll out the Purfresh Transport service globally throughout 2010.

'With its unparalleled access to the global marine shipping market, Carrier is the right partner to deliver our Purfresh Transport solution,' said David Cope, president and CEO of Purfresh, Inc. 'As global trade continues to expand, food safety is a growing concern, and worldwide growers, shippers, and importers are all searching for proven, cost-effective methods to protect their produce shipments. With the Purfresh-Carrier agreement, everyone—from the grower to the consumer—benefits from reduced losses, longer shelf life, fewer chemicals, and safer, higher quality produce.'

Scientifically proven in numerous laboratory studies and commercial trials involving a wide range of produce, the Purfresh Transport system generates and injects minute amounts of ozone to actively manage and purify a container's atmosphere and surfaces.

The Purfresh Transport system provides 100-percent residue-free decay prevention with enhanced food safety. It is especially well suited for organic produce because the use of ozone is approved for organics by the United States Department of Agriculture. It is also approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as safe for treatment of food.

Another benefit of ozone is its ability to help regulate levels of ethylene, a hormone given off by fruits and vegetables that can accelerate the ripening process.

'Purfresh, Inc. has a well-established reputation among growers, packers and food storage facilities, and has tremendous leadership in science-based solutions to maintain the quality and freshness of produce,' DiMaggio said. 'Its technology is exceptional and a great complement to Carrier's services.'

Available for use with Carrier's PrimeLINE®, EliteLINE® and ThinLINE® refrigeration units with a MicroLink® 2i or newer controller, the Purfresh Transport model 2100 mounts to the refrigeration systems in place of the evaporator fan access panel.

For more complete information about the Purfresh Transport service, turn to the experts at Carrier Transicold or visit www.container.carrier.com.

— WebWireID107916 —

Business Announcements

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Atlanta, UPS To Deliver About 400 Million Packages Around the World During the Holiday Period

Bolstered by a brigade of brown-suited Santas and 102 years of experience, UPS (NYSE:UPS) is set to deliver another season of holiday magic.

UPS has circled Monday, Dec. 21, on the calendar as its busiest day of the year when the company anticipates delivering approximately 22 million packages worldwide. That's about a 40 percent increase over normal daily delivery volumes.

For the entire holiday peak season - stretching from Thanksgiving to Christmas - UPS will deliver approximately 400 million packages around the world, up slightly compared to the 2008 holiday season. And to support this holiday package volume spike, UPS expects to hire roughly 50,000 seasonal workers.

"Each holiday season, UPS delivers more packages than anyone in the world," said Alan Gershenhorn, UPS senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. "Our customers know our shipping process is fast, easy and convenient and our team is dedicated to smoothly delivering the holidays."

UPS has a reliable and unmatched global network that does everything possible to ensure on-time delivery of holiday packages. Most UPS ground packages reach their destinations in three business days or less. Procrastinators can rely on UPS air services to ship as late as Wednesday, Dec. 23, for delivery on Thursday, Dec. 24.

To ensure on-time delivery during the holiday rush, UPS Airlines will fly more than 330 additional flights per day during Peak Week, the four days leading up to Friday, Dec. 25. The company's highest volume day for handling air express packages will be Wednesday, Dec. 23, when it will deliver more than 6 million air packages.

Once packages are in the UPS network, shippers can visit UPS.com to track their packages.

For the third year running, Saab has been ranked among Scandinavia's 20 best companies for climate reporting by the international Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The reasons for the top ranking are Saab's strategic long-term climate work and its investment in new environmental technologies. Saab's goal is to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases by 20 percent by the year 2020, compared with 2007.

"We are delighted that we can contribute with more and more solutions and products that lead to a society with lower emissions of carbon dioxide. Everything from solutions for more efficient transport flows on land and at sea, to Saab's work on the EU Clean Sky programme, which aims to reduce the effects of aviation on climate," says Saab's Environmental Director, Kenth Algotsson.
Saab's investment in new environmental technology

Saab participates in several European projects within environmental technologies:

    * Clean Sky - Saab's contribution includes the development of new types of wings, energy-efficient systems for deicing and smarter flights that will make European aviation more environmentally friendly and reduce emissions by 20-40 percent.
* SESAR – a development programme for air traffic control which aims to streamline European airspace, increase safety and reduce the environmental impact. Saab's contribution is i.e. the continuing development of remotely operated air traffic control towers, the ROT concept.

Decreased carbon dioxide emissions

From 2007 to 2008, Saab has reduced its emissions by about 7,500 tonnes, from 55,000 tonnes to 47,500 tonnes. The decrease is primarily due to reduced activity in South Africa and the divestment of Saab Space, but Saab's efforts to reduce emissions from its own operations have also produced results.
About the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent non-profit organisation with the largest database in the world of corporate climate reporting. Every year CDP presents the 20 companies that have shown the most professional handling of corporate governance with a focus on reporting the effects on climate change.

— WebWireID107842 —

Aerospace / Defense

Airlines / Aviation

Environment

Politics

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

* New generation with approx. 50 percent lower fuel consumption
* 10 new fuel cell buses for 'Hamburger Hochbahn'

Stuttgart / Hamburg, The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid made its first appearance in its future operating location of Hamburg today. The exceptional feature of this latest-generation fuel cell hybrid bus is its outstanding environmental compatibility. The bus emits absolutely no pollutants while in motion, and it's also virtually silent, making it ideal for use in highly congested inner cities and metropolitan areas. From next year, no less than ten of the 30 vehicles that Daimler Buses is producing for European transport operators are destined for the Hamburg transport authority. In addition, Hamburger Hochbahn will take delivery of 20 Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL cars starting 2010, which are also equipped with a fuel cell drive system.

The Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid is taking part in large-scale fleet trials which are due to take place in Hamburg and other European cities. This is a follow-up to the European Union's successful CUTE and HyFLEET:CUTE projects, which were carried out from 2003 to 2009. In the HyFLEET:CUTE project, a total of 36 Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses equipped with the second-generation fuel cell drive system have performed outstandingly for 12 public transport agencies on three continents, among them Hamburger Hochbahn AG. In more than 140,000 hours of operation, during which they covered a total of more than 2.2 million gererated kilometres, these environmentally compatible Mercedes-Benz buses have impressively demonstrated their ability to function reliably under operating conditions.

Intelligent use of synergies in the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors

'The new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid clearly demonstrates that electric mobility is already feasible today also with commercial vehicles', says Hartmut Schick, head of Daimler Buses. 'Besides, synergy potentials with our Mercedes-Benz passenger car development and Daimler research can be optimally used in particular with the fuel cell drive system.'

For the Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid and the B-Class F-CELL, Mercedes-Benz successfully follows the cost-effective principle of using common parts. Components such as fuel cell stacks can be used as modules for both cars and commercial vehicles, for example: the new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus is e.g. powered by two fuel cell systems of the same type used in the B-Class F-CELL. Thanks to improved fuel cell components and hybridisation with lithium-ion batteries, the Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid consumes almost 50 percent less hydrogen compared to the preceding generation. The operating range of the fuel cell bus is around 250 kilometers. The fuel cell drive system is also practi-cally maintenance-free, and has a long operating life.

The global initiative 'Shaping Future Transportation' consolidates all the activities for sustainable mobility in the commercial vehicles sector at Daimler AG. The aim of this initiative is to use clean, efficient drive systems along with alternative fuels to realize zero-emission commercial vehicles for tomorrow's transportation needs. 'Shaping Future Transportation' means conserving resources and reducing emissions of all kinds, while ensuring the highest possible level of traffic safety. The Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid, developed with the support of the European Union, plays a major role in this.

Prof. Kohler, Vice President e-drive & Future Mobility at Daimler AG: 'Our intensive research and development conducted since 1994 has enabled us to bring the fuel cell to series production maturity. This enables us to entrust two fully practical electric vehicles with battery-electric and fuel cell drive systems to our customers – the smart fortwo electric drive and the B-Class F-CELL. The main objective now is to achieve a competitive cost level in comparison with conventionally powered vehicles and to create a full infrastructure of electric and hydrogen filling stations in cooperation with energy providers and the petroleum industry.'

Large-scale project using fuel cell vehicles

In this large-scale project for the use of fuel cell technology in Hamburg, Daimler is cooperating with the city council as well as with Shell, Total und Vattenfall Europe. The aim is to accelerate the creation of an emission-free vehicle fleet and establish an appropriate infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations. The project is part of the Clean Energy Partnership in Hamburg and Berlin. It is being supported by the federal German government as part of the National Innovation Program for hydrogen and fuel cell technology (NIP).

As part of this cooperation, four public filling stations with hydrogen pumps are to be constructed in Hamburg, enabling fuel cell vehicles to be refuelled within minutes. Thanks to the high hydrogen pressure of 700 bar, their operating range will then exceed 400 kilometers. This large operating range will make locally emission-free fuel cell vehicles fully suited to long-distance operations.

— WebWireID107837 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Environment

Oil / Energy

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Airbus has launched its new "Sharklet" large wingtip devices, specially designed to enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320 Family. Offered as a forward-fit option, Sharklets are expected to result in at least 3.5 percent reduced fuelburn over longer sectors, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. The A320 will be the first model fitted with Sharklets, which will be delivered around the end of 2012, to be followed by the other A320 Family models from 2013. Air New Zealand is the launch customer for the Sharklets which are specified for its future A320 fleet.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, Rob Fyfe commented: "Air New Zealand recently decided to move to an all A320 fleet for narrow-body operations on domestic and short-haul international routes. The new Sharklets will enable our Airbus fleet to benefit from lower fuel burn and carbon emissions, both across Air New Zealand's domestic network and especially on the longer trans-Tasman sectors."

Airbus Chief Operating Officer - Customers, John Leahy said: "The eco-efficient A320 Family just keeps getting better. We are delighted that Air New Zealand recognises that our single-aisle Family will remain the most profitable product in its class for years to come." He added: "Sharklets are not just part of Airbus' response to addressing environmental issues and rising fuel costs, but they also enhance aircraft overall performance."

It should be noted that the 3.5 percent efficiency improvement with Sharklets will be additional to the already positive effect of the A320 classic wingtip fence. Payload-range benefits include either a revenue payload increase of around 500kg or an additional 100nm range at the original payload. The Sharklet installation also keeps the A320 Family within the ICAO 'Class C' (wingspan less than 36m) and will result in higher available takeoff weights, notably from obstacle-limited runways. Moreover, where runway performance is not 'limiting', operators should profit from a reduction in average takeoff thrust (with consequent savings in engine maintenance costs by around two percent), while communities will also appreciate even lower takeoff noise. Other benefits are the enhanced climb performance and higher initial cruise altitude.

This latest development has been part of the larger continuous improvement programme for the A320 Family which is supported by an annual investment in excess of 100 million euros each year. To this end, Airbus has conducted a thorough campaign over several years to evaluate improved large aerodynamic devices - not only using Airbus' company-owned A320 test aircraft, but also with its advanced computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulation-tools.

— WebWireID107783 —

Airlines / Aviation

Environment

Machinery

Transportation / Shipping

Travel Industry

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds
