Green Tea Shows Promise as Chemoprevention Agent for Oral Cancer, M. D. Anderson Study Finds

Green tea extract has shown promise as cancer prevention agent for oral cancer in patients with a pre-malignant condition known as oral leukoplakia, according to researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The study, published online in Cancer Prevention Research, is the first to examine green tea as a chemopreventative agent in this high-risk patient population. The researchers found that more than half of the oral leukoplakia patients who took the extract had a clinical response.

Long investigated in laboratory, epidemiological and clinical settings for several cancer types, green tea is rich in polyphenols, which have been known to inhibit carcinogenesis in preclinical models. Still, clinical results have been mixed.

"While still very early, and not definitive proof that green tea is an effective preventive agent, these results certainly encourage more study for patients at highest risk for oral cancer," said Vassiliki Papadimitrakopoulou, M.D., professor in M. D. Anderson's Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, and the study's senior author. "The extract's lack of toxicity is attractive - in prevention trials, it's very important to remember that these are otherwise healthy individuals and we need to ensure that agents studied produce no harm."

In the Phase II dose-finding study, 41 M. D. Anderson oral leukoplakia patients were randomized between August 2002 and March 2008 to receive either green tea extract or placebo. Participants took the extract, an oral agent, for three months at one of three doses - 500 per meter squared of body mass (mg/m2); 750 mg/m2 or 1,000 mg/m2 - three times daily. To best assess biomarkers, participants also underwent a baseline and 12-week biopsy, an important component in the design of the study, the researchers say.

"Collecting oral tissue biopsies was essential in that it allowed us to learn that not only did the green tea extract appear to have benefit for some patients, but we pointed to anti-angiogenic effects as a potential mechanism of action," said Anne Tsao, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, and the study's first author. "While preliminary because our patient population was so small, this gives us direction for further study."

Of those taking green tea at the two highest doses, 58.8% had a clinical response, compared with 36.4% in the lowest extract dose and 18.2% in the placebo arm. At an extended follow-up with a mean of 27.5 months, 15 participants had developed oral cancer, with a median time to disease development of 46.4 months.

Although not statistically significant, the green tea extract also improved histology and trended towards an improvement in a number of biomarkers that may play a vital role in predicting cancer development.

Another important finding, say the researchers, was that that the extract was well tolerated. Side effects, including insomnia and nervousness, were mostly seen in the high-dose group but produced no significant toxicity.

"While these are encouraging findings, much more research must be done before we can conclude that green tea may prevent oral or any other type of cancer. It's also important to remind people that this trial enrolled very few participants who, at the highest dose levels took the equivalent of eight cups of green tea three times a day," said Papadimitrakopoulo. "We need to further understand if green tea offers longer-term prevention effects for patients."

Papadimitrakopoulo and Tsao think that future studies with green tea in this high-risk population should focus on participants being exposed to the supplement for a longer time period. The researchers also stressed that the green tea extract studied in this trial was never sold over-the-counter and/or the Internet, both of which are not highly regulated. Rather, the compound was exclusively developed as a pharmaceutical.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 35,720 are expected to be diagnosed with oral and/or pharynx cancer and the five year survival rate is less than 50%.

The study was funded by Ito En, the company that produced the green tea extract.

In addition to Papadimitrakopoulou and Tsao, other M. D. Anderson authors on the study include: Waun Ki Hong, M.D., professor and chair of the Division of Cancer Medicine; Jack Martin, D.D.S., professor in the Department of Dental Oncology; Li Mao, M.D., adjunct professor, and Xi Ming Tang, M.D., Ph.D., research scientist, both of the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology; Adel El-Naggar, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pathology; Iganacio Wistuba, M.D., professor in the Department of Pathology-Research; Kirk Culotta, Phar M.D., Department of Pharmacy pharmacology research; Ann Gillenwater, M.D., professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery; J. Jack Lee, Ph.D., professor, and Diane Liu, both of the Department of Biostatistics. Other authors include Yuko Sagesaka of Ito En, Ltd. 11/05/09

— WebWireID107184 —

Education

Food / Beverages

Health Care / Hospitals

Lifestyle / Society

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Study Finds Penile Extender Can Increase Size By a Third

After a year-long study at the University of Turin, Italy, doctors have found that penile extenders can stimulate permanent growth of the male organ by up to a third.

The results of the independent study were recently published in the British Journal of Urology. Men who wore a penile extender every day for at least 4 hours, for six months, were able to increase the length of their penis by up to 32%, and improve their erections by 36%.

Researchers from San Giovanni Battista Hospital at the University of Turin, Italy, led by Dr. Paolo Gontero, claim the extender is less intrusive and more effective than surgery. In addition, Dr. Gontero found that, 'The mean lengthening achieved with the penis extender was 1 inch, the mean lengthening achieved with surgery is approximately half that'.

In conclusion, "Our study showed that the Andropenis device produces an effective and durable lengthening of the penis, both in the flaccid and stretched state" says Dr. Gontero [full study].
The extender used in the study is Andropenis, made by Andromedical, a European urological laboratory. Dr. Gomez de Diego, the man behind the extender, says that since the laboratory was opened 10 years ago, he has helped more than 300,000 men worldwide.

Dr. Gomez explains, 'It is estimated that at least 45% of men are insecure about their penis size, yet the subject remains taboo.' The Doctor concludes, 'But times are changing. In January we will celebrate our 10th Anniversary and I believe that penis enlargement will soon be as culturally accepted as breast augmentation'.

Key findings include:
The men's average flaccid penile length was 7.15 cm (2.82 inches) on day one and had increased by 32%, to 9.45cm (3.72 inches) by month 12.
The men's average stretched penile length was 9.62 cm (3.79 inches) at the beginning and had increased by 18%, to 11.32 cm (4.45 inches) by month 12.
Erectile function improved by up to 36%, from 19.9 at the beginning to 27.1 (out of 30) after 12 months.

Full Study
http://www.andromedical.com/pdf/en/study_penile_extender_regarded_as_effective_treatment_for_short_penis.pdf

About Andromedical®
Andromedical® is a European Urological Laboratory and an ISO Quality-Certified Medical Manufacturer which focuses on men's health products.

— WebWireID106669 —

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Citizens of Minnesota no longer have to live with the pain of whiplash symptoms. Lyn Lake Chiropractic, a state-of-the-art Minneapolis Chiropractic clinic, has over the years developed highly-specialized knowledge and experience in healing patients of whiplash.

With a staff of professional and experienced Minneapolis chiropractors led by Dr. Kevin Schreifels and Dr. Jill Field, Lyn Lake Chiropractic operates on the notion that life is motion and that you cannot let things like whiplash injuries hinder you from going ahead and doing what you love.

Whiplash injuries, which are commonly caused by car accidents, are different from other types of injuries. Whiplash symptoms usually take some time before they begin to manifest themselves and when they do appear they usually take the form of neck pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, headaches, upper back and shoulder pain, lower back pain, and fatigue.

Chiropractic is known to be a very effective long-term treatment for this unique type of injury. The chiropractors at Lyn Lake use a special combination of manual spinal manipulation, massage therapy, trigger point therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and other soft tissue rehabilitation modalities to restore the patient's health and mobility.

Ben, a Certified Personal Trainer, relates his experience for whiplash treatment at Lyn Lake: 'They gave me the full treatment at Lyn Lake Chiropractic for my whiplash auto injury. They gave me adjustments, massage, ultrasound, laser treatment, traction, and a great rehab program which helped my body finally returned to me as it was before my car accident.'

Ben was not only happy with the high quality of chiropractic treatment he received from Lyn Lake, he was also thankful for the way the clinic's staff treated him personally, saying, 'The amount of energy the staff, Dr Kevin Schreifels, and Dr Jill Field gave me was outstanding. The loft-like clinic is great and had a caring atmosphere. They made me feel like a family member, they cared about how I was doing and if I was getting better.'

Lyn Lake also offers other services, such as chiropractic for children and the elderly, chiropractic for pregnant women, treatments for headaches, running injuries, sports injuries, and other special add-on services such as nutritional counseling, lifestyle advice, and massage therapy.

Lyn Lake Chiropractic is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and the Official Chiropractors of the Twin Cities Marathon.

To schedule a free consultation, call the clinic's 24-hour answering service at (612)879-8000 or visit Lyn Lake Chiropractic at 2937 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis MN.

National data suggest non-whites are especially at risk

Boston, Mass. -- Millions of children in the United States between the ages of 1 and 11 may suffer from suboptimal levels of vitamin D, according to a large nationally representative study published in the November issue of Pediatrics, accompanied by an editorial.

The study, led by Jonathan Mansbach, MD, at Children's Hospital Boston, is the most up-to-date analysis of vitamin D levels in U.S. children. It builds on the growing evidence that levels have fallen below what's considered healthy, and that black and Hispanic children are at particularly high risk.

Both the optimal amount of vitamin D supplementation and the healthy blood level of vitamin D are under heated debate in the medical community. Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children should have vitamin D levels of at least 50 nmol/L (20 ng/ml). However, other studies in adults suggest that vitamin D levels should be at least 75 nmol/L (30 ng/ml), and possibly 100 nmol/L (40 ng/ml), to lower the risk of heart disease and specific cancers.

Mansbach and collaborators from the University of Colorado Denver and Massachusetts General Hospital used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to look at vitamin D levels in a nationally representative sample of roughly 5,000 children from 2001-2006. Extrapolating to the entire U.S. population, their analysis suggests that roughly 20 percent of all children fell below the recommended 50 nmol/L. Moreover, more than two-thirds of all children had levels below 75 nmol/L, including 80 percent of Hispanic children and 92 percent of non-Hispanic black children.

"If 75 nmol/L or higher is eventually demonstrated to be the healthy normal level of vitamin D, then there is much more vitamin D deficiency in the U.S. than people realize," Mansbach says.
Mansbach and his co-authors suggest that all children take vitamin D supplements, because of the generally low levels that they found and the potential health benefits of boosting vitamin D to normal levels. Vitamin D improves bone health and prevents rickets in children, and recent studies suggest that it also may prevent a host of common childhood illnesses, including respiratory infections, childhood wheezing, and winter-related eczema.

Although sun exposure generates healthy doses of vitamin D, it can also cause skin cancer. Dermatologists and the AAP recommend wearing sunblock, but this actually blocks our skin's ability to make vitamin D. Furthermore, children with more highly pigmented skin require much more sun exposure than fair-skinned children to obtain healthy levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D can also be obtained from certain foods, like liver and fatty fish, but almost all children in the U.S. don't consume these foods in high enough quantities to match the vitamin D that could be provided by summer sunshine or vitamin D supplements.

In the study, children taking multi-vitamins that included vitamin D had higher levels overall, but this accounted for less than half of all children. Mansbach recommends that all children take vitamin D supplements, especially those living in high latitudes, where the sun is scarce in the wintertime.

"We need to perform randomized controlled trials to understand if vitamin D actually improves these wide-ranging health outcomes," Mansbach says. "At present, however, there are a lot of studies demonstrating associations between low levels of vitamin D and poor health. Therefore, we believe many U.S. children would likely benefit from more vitamin D."

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Written by Cassandra Brooks

Children's Hospital Boston is home to the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center, where its discoveries have benefited both children and adults since 1869. More than 500 scientists, including eight members of the National Academy of Sciences, 12 members of the Institute of Medicine and 12 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute comprise Children's research community. Founded as a 20-bed hospital for children, Children's Hospital Boston today is a 396-bed comprehensive center for pediatric and adolescent health care grounded in the values of excellence in patient care and sensitivity to the complex needs and diversity of children and families. Children's also is the primary pediatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

New Haven, Conn. — The least healthy breakfast cereals are those most frequently and aggressively marketed directly to children as young as age two, finds a new study from Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. The researchers' evaluation of cereal marketing, the first such study of its kind, shows pervasive targeting of children across all media platforms and in stores. The detailed findings of this study, which was supported in part by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will be presented in Washington today at Obesity 2009, the 27th annual scientific meeting of The Obesity Society.

Researchers studied the nutrient composition and comprehensive marketing efforts of 115 cereal brands and 277 individual cereal varieties. Nineteen brands (comprised of 47 varieties) were identified as 'child brands' because their cereals are marketed directly to children on television, the Internet, or through licensed characters, such as Dora the Explorer.

Cereal companies spend nearly $156 million annually marketing to children just on television. They also market extensively using the Internet, social media, packaging, and in-store promotions.

'This research demonstrates just how far cereal companies have gone to target children in almost everything they do. The total amount of breakfast cereal marketing to children on television and computer screens, and at their eye-level in stores, combined with the appalling nutrient profile of the cereals most frequently marketed, is staggering,' said lead researcher Jennifer L. Harris, Ph.D, MBA, director of marketing initiatives at the Rudd Center.

Key marketing exposure findings include:

    * The average preschooler sees 642 cereal ads per year on television alone, almost all for cereals with the worst nutrition rankings.
* Companies make heavy use of online marketing in the form of company-sponsored cereal websites and 'advergames.' General Mills' websites Millsberry.com, averages 767,000 unique young visitors a month who stay an average of nearly 24 minutes per visit while Postopia.com averages nearly 265,000 young visitors monthly.
* Kellogg—the most frequent in-store advertiser—averaged 33.3 promotions per store and 9.5 special displays for its child and family brands over the four-week period examined.
* General Mills markets to children more than any other cereal company. Six of the ten least healthy cereals advertised to children are made by General Mills, including the advertised cereal with the worst nutrition score—Reese's Puffs, which is 41% sugar.

Key nutrition findings include:

    * Cereals marketed directly to children have 85% more sugar, 65% less fiber, and 60% more sodium than cereals marketed to adults for adult consumption.
* Forty-two percent of child-targeted cereals contain artificial food dyes, compared with 26% of family cereals and 5% of adult cereals.
* Of the cereals targeted directly to children, only 8% meet sugar limits to qualify for inclusion in the USDA's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, and not one meets the nutrition standards required to advertise to children in the United Kingdom.
* All cereals marketed directly to children — including Cocoa Puffs (44% sugar), Cap'n Crunch (44% sugar), Froot Loops (41% sugar), Lucky Charms (41% sugar) and Cinnamon Toast Crunch (32% sugar) — meet industry's own nutrition standards for 'better-for-you' foods.

Through the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) sponsored by the Council of Better Business Bureaus, most of the largest food marketers have pledged to reduce marketing of unhealthy products to children. This research shows that the CFBAI has not significantly reduced the amount of cereal advertising to children on television.

'Ceding authority to the food companies to regulate themselves is a mistake,' according to Kelly Brownell, Ph.D, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. 'The companies want to be seen as public health allies making good faith efforts to change, but their actions indicate otherwise.'

Added Jim Marks, MD, MPH, senior vice president and director of the Health Group, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: 'While cereal can be a healthy and convenient breakfast for children, this study shows that cereal companies are targeting children with their least healthy products. Clearly there's a lot of room for improvement.'

The full report and tools for consumers and researchers are available at www.cerealfacts.org.

— WebWireID106439 —

Advertising / Marketing

Education

Food / Beverages

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Northwestern research finds drugs aim at wrong target

By Marla Paul

CHICAGO - For more than half the people who take antidepressants, relief from their symptoms never comes.

Why? Because the cause of depression has been oversimplified and drugs designed to treat it aim at the wrong target, according to new research from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The medications are like arrows shot at the outer rings of a bull's eye instead of the center.

A study from the laboratory of long-time depression researcher Eva Redei, presented at the Neuroscience 2009 conference in Chicago this week, appears to topple two strongly held beliefs about depression. One is that stressful life events are a major cause of depression. The other is that an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain triggers depressive symptoms.

Both findings are significant because these beliefs were the basis for developing drugs currently used to treat depression.

Redei, the David Lawrence Stein Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern's Feinberg School, found powerful molecular evidence that quashes the long-held dogma that stress is generally a major cause of depression. Her new research reveals that there is almost no overlap between stress-related genes and depression-related genes.

"This is a huge study and statistically powerful," Redei said. "This research opens up new routes to develop new antidepressants that may be more effective. There hasn't been an antidepressant based on a novel concept in 20 years."

Her findings are based on extensive studies with a model of severely depressed rats that mirror many behavioral and physiological abnormalities found in patients with major depression. The rats, after decades of development, are believed to be the most depressed in the world.

Little Overlap Between Stress and Depression Genes

Redei used microarray technology to isolate and identify the specific genes related to depression in these animals. She examined the genes in the brain regions -- the hippocampus and amygdala -- commonly associated with depression in rats and humans.

Then she took four genetically different strains of rats and exposed them to chronic stress for two weeks. Afterwards, she identified the genes that had consistently increased or decreased in response to the stress in all four strains in the same brain regions.

Redei now had one set of depression-related genes that came out of an animal model of depression and one set of stress-related genes that came our of her chronic stress study.

Next she compared the two sets of genes to see if there were any similarities. "If the 'stress causes depression theory' was correct, there should have been a significant overlap between these two sets of genes," she said. "There weren't."

Out of a total of over 30,000 genes on the microarray, she discovered approximately 254 genes related to stress and 1275 genes related to depression, with an overlap of only five genes between the two.

"This overlap is insignificant, a very small percentage," Redei said. "This finding is clear evidence that at least in an animal model, chronic stress does not cause the same molecular changes as depression does."

Antidepressants Treat Stress Not Depression

Most animal models that are used by scientists to test antidepressants are based on the hypothesis that stress causes depression. "They stress the animals and look at their behavior," she said. "Then they manipulate the animals' behavior with drugs and say, 'OK, these are going to be good anti-depressants.' But they are not treating depression; they are treating stress."

That is one key reason why current antidepressants aren't doing a great job, Redei noted. She is now looking at the genes that differ in the depressed rat to narrow down targets for drug development.

She said another reason current antidepressants are often ineffective is that they aim to boost neurotransmitters based on the popular molecular explanation of depression, which is that it's the result of decreased levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. But that's wrong, Redei said.

Drugs Aim at Wrong Molecular Target

In the second part of the study, Redei found strong indications that depression actually begins further up in the chain of events in the brain. The biochemical events that ultimately result in depression actually start in the development and functioning of neurons.

"The medications have been focusing on the effect, not the cause," she said. "That's why it takes so long for them to work and why they aren't effective for so many people."

Her animal model of depression did not show dramatic differences in the levels of genes controlling neurotransmitters functions. "If depression was related to neurotransmitter activity, we would have seen that," she said.

Similarities Between Human and Rodent Brains

Her findings in depressed rats, she said, are very likely applicable to humans.

"The similarities between these regions of the human and rodent brain are remarkable," Redei explained. "The hippocampus and amygdala are part of the so-called ancient lizard brain that controls survival and are the same in even primitive organisms."

Contributors to the study from Redei's lab include Brian Andrus, Kristen Dennis and Daniel Schaffer, research assistants, and Pradeep Shukla, a postdoctoral fellow. Jelena Radulovic, M.D., Dunbar Scholar and associate professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Feinberg School, also contributed as did Peter Vedell, a postdoctoral associate in professor Gary Churchill's group at The Jackson Lab, Bar Harbor.

— WebWireID106388 —

Education

Health Care / Hospitals

Lifestyle / Society

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Black Grape Biosciences (http://www.blackgrape.com), a newly launched company by entrepreneur Robb Knie of NJ (http://www.twitter.com/Robb_Knie), has introduced a pharmaceutical grade Resveratrol supplement that offers less filler and more resveratrol per capsule, compared to leading brands on the market.

Knie says he wanted to create a true Resveratrol product that packed a more powerful antioxidant punch than current brands offer. "The goal of incorporating Resveratrol into one's daily diet is to boost the immune system, help prevent some of the leading causes of death, including heart disease and cancer, and even extend the life span of those who take it. "

While many companies tout Resveratrol primarily as a weight loss product, Knie wants to raise awareness of the multitude of health benefits offered by this key ingredient. "Resveratrol does mimic the effects of a gene we have that helps break down fat and boost energy, and that's a great health benefit," explains Knie. "But most people don't realize that studies have shown Resveratrol to also lower blood sugar, help prevent kidney disease and pancreatitis, increase sperm production, and - perhaps most notably - aid in the prevention of the two leading causes of death in the world: heart disease and cancer. "

Toward this end, Knie has partnered with the National Foundation of Cancer Research and has committed a portion of Black Grape Resveratrol sales to support NFCR's cancer research and education programs.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant found in the skins of red (or dark) grapes, as well as Japanese Knotweed. Studies have shown that Resveratrol promotes cellular longevity and improves the performance of the brain and the heart. Resveratrol is also being considered by medical professionals as a supplemental therapy for cancer treatment.

To learn more about Black Grape Resveratrol and Resveratrol benefits, please visit http://www.blackgrape.com

— WebWireID106345 —

Food / Beverages

Lifestyle / Society

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Leola Family Health Center plans to go paperless through implementing an electronic medical record system. The Leola based practice recently purchased a system that will allow patient records to be stored in a digital format. Physicians will now be able to conveniently access patient records from tablet computers which they will have with them in the exam rooms.

An electronic record system offers many benefits both to physicians and to patients. Physicians no longer have to expend valuable time and energy finding paper charts, organizing their contents, and re-filing them when they are finished. All records will be available to them at a push of the button, allowing more time for the physician to concentrate on patient care. Electronic records will also offer increased access of medical information to patients. In time, it is the hope of Leola Family Health Center to offer a patient portal, where patients can log into a secure web page and access test results, post messages to their doctor and even schedule an appointment.

Electronic records helps to keep the office environment organized and clutter free. This new approach will decreasing the amount of time patients have to wait to receive test results, have referrals made and get responses to phone inquiries. Electronic records also decreases the amount of waste generated. Documents that use to be printed out on paper will now require no paper. Even faxes can be received electronically.

Leola Family Health Center began the process of researching electronic medical records several years ago. Much research and hard work went into electing the best course of action for implementing this system. Leola Family Health Center is excited about the benefits of electronic records and excited to provide quality and effective patient care now and for years to come.

— WebWireID106173 —

Health Care / Hospitals

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

Sports

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

– Heal the mind... the body will follow –

NEWMARKET, ON, Oct 20, 2009 – PATZIA GONZALEZ-BAZ of NEWMARKET, ON expert Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner, a revolutionary healing modality, offers a unique healing therapy to clients in the Newmarket - Aurora area through www.HealingHeartsCentre.com. According to Gonzalez-Baz, EFT works with a variety of physical and emotional symptoms, often succeeding where nothing else does.

Dr. Curtis Steele, a psychiatrist from Halifax, Nova Scotia, says: "I use EFT daily in my busy practice of outpatient psychiatry (with a focus on psychotherapy). I estimate that my success rate with this technique is about 95% at this time. I think this is due to a carefully precise setup, plus the use of intuitive psychotherapy skills that I have learned over time. EFT, or Emotional freedom Techniques, is the single most effective tool I've learned in 40 years of being a therapist. "

Gonzalez-Baz explains the basis of this technique: 'You simply tap on key acupuncture points while focusing on a problem or condition you would like to change. It's particularly good for stress and anxiety. I'm always amazed at how quickly someone can let go of a serious problem, fear, or phobia and look or feel ten years younger as a result. My clients have experienced profound & lasting results for weight issues, stress, anxiety, pain, phobias, relationship issues, & more. The added benefit, is that it greatly shortens the amount of sessions required compared to conventional psychotherapy.'

EFT is a process of tapping on the meridian points of traditional Chinese acupuncture while focusing on emotional problems. Most people who do so experience a relaxation response almost immediately, as well as a lessening of the problem emotion and more positive thinking patterns. Studies have shown that these techniques can rapidly relieve negative emotions such as fears or phobias, stress, anger and post traumatic stress, and help people to overcome public speaking fears.

Patzia Gonzalez-Baz, is a Gestalt and Person Centered Psychotherapist from Mexico, an expert EFT Practitioner, a Clinical Member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists and a Diplomate in Comprehensive Energy Therapies. She has studied many healing and therapy techniques, but she considers EFT to be the fastest acting and the easiest to teach and learn.

####

— WebWireID106140 —

Lifestyle / Society

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Survey reveals that health and wellness remains front of mind for consumers

Research released today by Tate & Lyle shows that consumers continue to see health and wellness as an important issue and will pay more for foods that display health benefits on their labels.

The findings are part of Tate & Lyle's ongoing research into European consumer's attitudes towards labelling, ingredients and shopping habits.

The survey, conducted in July 2009, polled 1,565 people in five countries: Germany, France, UK, Spain and Italy. The results show an increasing awareness and sophistication amongst participants in their attitudes towards their diet and their perceptions of food labelling.

Healthy eating – Which claims interest consumers?

Tate & Lyle's research revealed that across Europe, 53% of consumers often check nutritional information on-pack, and 57% check the ingredient list at the back of a packaging, confirming their interest in labelling to determine if a product is healthy.

The research also reveals at least half of consumers see less fat and sugar as important benefits. Additionally, around 80% of respondents noted that they would be prepared to spend more on specific claims which have so far been less common in some countries, such as 'improving cardiovascular health' and 'helps to control cholesterol', suggesting an opportunity for manufacturers.

Other findings of the survey include:

    * Consumers continue to expect high-quality products and pleasant mouthfeel, with only 20% prepared to compromise on taste if the product is healthy.
* Feel that their diet is lacking in fibre, specifically in the case of young people
* Are attracted to recognised and consumer friendly ingredients for specific health benefits: three out of four consumers claiming fructose as their favourite sweetener; and 'polydextrose (fibre)' among the most appealing fibre (61%).

Anne Barry, Marketing Officer of Tate & Lyle Food and Industrial Ingredients, Europe said: 'Understanding that consumers still view health and wellness as extremely important, and look to on-pack labelling for guidance, will enable our customers to respond to these consumers preferences.'

Tate & Lyle will be exhibiting at FIE in Frankfurt between 17th and 19th of November 2009 and will present further details of the research at the exhibition.

About Tate & Lyle

Tate & Lyle is a world-leading renewable food and industrial ingredients company, serving a global market from more than 45 production facilities throughout the Americas, Europe and South East Asia.

Sacramento, CA - Seven time WNBA All-star, Yolanda Griffith has joined a new company called Mandura. Griffith, an Olympic Gold Medalist, recently signed a contract with the Indiana Fever as a free agent to play her final season in Chicago. Griffith explains, 'I'm going to Indiana partly because they remind me of my days in the ABL (American Basketball League). '

After 11 seasons, and an injury to her left Achilles tendon on June 9, 2009, she has decided to retire from basketball. Griffith, while deciding on a coaching career, has taken on an entrepreneurial position and started her own business with the new health drink for two reasons, she explains, 'Mandura has offered me the continued health I am looking for, as well as an opportunity to generate a massive income.' She goes on to say, 'even though I have retired, I still have a drive to generate an income, and this will allow me to have multiple sources of income while I choose take on a coaching position, the kind of money I am accustomed to. It's a win-win.'

Griffith goes on to say this about the Mandura compensation plan, 'every single person that secures a spot with Mandura goes into a single line compensation plan, which is what makes Mandura so unique and why I choose the company.'

When asked how this would fit into her life, she explains,' this is something I can do from anywhere, and make money. I know people that are health conscious and the product fits right in with my lifestyle.' When asked if there was a catch, Griffith shared, 'with Mandura people can get started for as little as a $30 investment, basically a bottle of juice. That is it.' She goes on to say,' There is an option of a distributor kit, however not mandatory, no website fees, no membership fee, very easy.'

When asked about the product itself, Griffith added, 'Mandura is a superior product as well, containing delicious synergistic blend of the royal family of fruits purposefully selected to provide the ultimate nutritional offerings to my family, friends and potential customers.'

As the WNBA moves further in to a second decade, we will see more of the outstanding athletes retire from a league that helped create. They will all be searching for that something extra and Griffith feels confident that with Mandura's compensation plan and product, they will have a winning edge. 'I am happy I found Mandura when I did, it will definitely supplement my income and be a 'good for me' product as well,' Griffith explains. With her excitement of a new business opportunity for all, she continues to be a leader and a winner.

— WebWireID105922 —

Lifestyle / Society

Media Advisory

Supplementary Medicine / Nutrition

Workforce Management / Human Resources

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds
