The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced sanctions against five athletes who participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for having committed anti-doping violations. These five athletes tested positive for mirCERA© (CERA), a third generation of the endurance-enhancing hormone, EPO.

The samples were collected and tested at Games-time and were subject to further analysis earlier this year when a fully validated test to detect CERA became available. Originally, six athletes showed adverse analytical findings in their A samples. However, one athlete was not sanctioned due to the presence of CERA not being detected in her B sample.

All six athletes had the opportunity to be heard by an IOC Disciplinary Commission.

Two of the athletes sanctioned are medallists:
- Rashid Ramzi from Bahrain, gold medallist in the 1500m (athletics) and
- Davide Rebellin from Italy, silver medallist in the individual road race (cycling).

In these two cases, the IOC Disciplinary Commission forwarded its recommendations to the IOC Executive Board, which took the following decisions:

The athlete, Rashid Ramzi, Bahrain, Athletics -

    * shall be disqualified from the Athletics Men's 1500m event of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where he had placed 1st.
* shall have his medal and diploma in the above-mentioned event withdrawn.
* The International Association of Athletics Federations is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
* The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Bahrain is ordered to return to the IOC, as soon as possible, the medal and diploma awarded to the Athlete in relation to the above-mentioned event.
* The NOC of Bahrain shall ensure full implementation of this decision.
* This decision shall enter into force immediately.

The athlete, Davide Rebellin, Italy, Cycling -

    * shall be disqualified from the Men's Cycling Road event of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where he had placed 2nd.
* shall have his medal and diploma in the above-mentioned event withdrawn.
* The Union Cycliste Internationale is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
* The NOC of Italy is ordered to return to the IOC, as soon as possible, the medal and diploma awarded to the Athlete in relation to the above-mentioned event.
* The NOC of Italy shall ensure full implementation of this decision.
* This decision shall enter into force immediately.

In the other four cases, which did not involve medallists, the IOC Disciplinary Commission was the decision-making body. The decisions are as follows:

    * The athlete Stefan Schumacher, Germany, Cycling, is disqualified from the Men's individual Time Trial event of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where he placed 13th;
* The Union Cycliste Internationale is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
* This decision shall enter into force immediately

    * The athlete, Athanasia Tsoumeleka, Greece, Athletics, is disqualified from the Women's 20km Walk event of the 2008 Olympic Games where she placed 9th;
* The International Association of Athletics Federations is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
* The decision shall enter into force immediately.

* The athlete, Vanja Perisic, Croatia, Athletics, is disqualified from the Athletics Women's 800m event (Round 1, Heat 3) of the 2008 Olympic Games, where she had placed 6th;
* The International Association of Athletics Federations is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
* This decision shall enter into force immediately.

In the case of Yudelquis Maridalin Contreras from the Dominican Republic, who placed fifth in the Women's 53kg weightlifting event, the IOC Disciplinary Commission decided that:
on the basis of the proof currently available in the present case, no sanction shall be imposed upon the athlete Yudelquis Maridalin Contreras.

    * The IOC's right to re-open a disciplinary procedure is reserved in the event that new evidence comes to light.
* The International Weightlifting Federation and the NOC of the Dominican Republic shall be informed of this decision.
* This decision shall enter into force immediately.

Background information:
As part of its zero-tolerance policy against doping, the IOC is storing samples collected during the Olympic Games for eight years. This allows the IOC to analyse samples retroactively should new fully validated tests to detect new prohibited substances/methods become available. The latest round of further analyses, which began in January, took advantage of improved technology to seek evidence of the prohibited use of CERA and insulin. Most of the work was conducted at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Lausanne, in close collaboration with the accredited laboratories in Paris and Cologne.

Strong anti-doping programme in Vancouver:
During the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, approximately 2000 doping tests - 1600 urine and 400 blood - will be conducted under the authority of the IOC. This represents a 67% increase from the last Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006.

— WebWireID108078 —

Entertainment

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Event will also include free health screenings, panel discussion among local health care leaders

LOS ANGELES, Aetna (NYSE:AET) and Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE) announced today that Earvin 'Magic' Johnson will be the featured speaker at a free 'Magic@50' Community Health EXPO at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center (4718 West Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016) on Saturday, November 21.

The EXPO is free and open to the public, running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Johnson's presentation will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Entitled 'Magic@50,' this presentation will focus partly on the efforts that Aetna and MJE have made since 2008 to help improve health literacy, particularly in diverse urban and suburban communities. In addition, Johnson will talk about his own personal experiences with turning 50 this past August, and the increased importance of improving health literacy and maintaining health and wellness for people over 50.

A number of local health care organizations will provide a wide range of free health screenings and services at the EXPO. This includes screenings for HIV, asthma, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In addition, there will be mammograms, basic oral care and exams and seasonal flu shots available to attendees (there will be no H1N1 flu shots).

At 9:45 a.m., there will be a panel discussion among local health care leaders focusing on key health and wellness issues, with an emphasis on citizens 45 years old and above. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. David Pryor, Aetna Medical Director in the West Region. In his current position, Dr. Pryor is responsible for leading the clinical staff in his region in the coordination of quality, cost effective care on behalf of Aetna members. He serves on Aetna's Clinical Policy Council and is also a member of the Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Health Disparities.

'The 'Magic@50' Community Health EXPO is a great opportunity for local residents to find helpful information and resources,' Dr. Pryor said. 'Between what is sure to be an enthusiastic presentation from Mr. Johnson, the panel discussion with local health care leaders, and free health screenings, attendees should be able to find something that can truly help them lead healthier lives.'

In addition to the free screenings and panel discussion, there will be a number of informational exhibitor booths from local health care organizations. This includes AARP, as well as chapters of the American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, the Alzheimer's Association and the American Red Cross.

Attendees at the event will also have the chance to enter raffles for autographed memorabilia from Johnson, including a basketball and jersey as well as copies of his book, '32 Ways to Be a Champion in Business.' Attendees who receive two or more free health screenings will also have the opportunity to get their photo with Mr. Johnson after his presentation.

Additional 'Magic@50' Activities
This EXPO is the continuation of the 'Magic@50' campaign that Aetna and MJE started last November with a similar, highly successful free 'Magic@50' Community Health EXPO in Chicago. Another Community Health EXPO took place earlier in November 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Just last month, Johnson delivered a presentation on the importance of improving health literacy and maintaining health and wellness for people over 50 to more than 4,000 individuals as a featured speaker at AARP's National Event & EXPO, Vegas@50+.

To promote the 'Magic@50' Community Health EXPO in Los Angeles, Aetna is distributing approximately 40,000 free community newspapers throughout the Los Angeles market.. Entitled 'Urban Call,' this publication features informative health-related articles on behalf of Aetna and Magic Johnson Enterprises. In addition, Aetna is reaching out to residents with a wide range of activities focused on the Community Health EXPO, including direct mail pieces to AARP members and newspaper advertising, as well as through church bulletin inserts and direct outreach to local ministers.

In addition, as part of this broader program, Aetna and MJE have developed a unique website (www.aetnamagicat50.com) that highlights various elements of the 'Magic@50' campaign. The site includes event listings and a number of exclusive videos with Mr. Johnson describing how he has faced personal challenges with his health and in business, as well as ways that the Aetna/Magic Johnson Enterprises alliance can help improve health literacy. The site also contains articles from Urban Call on Aetna's commitment to diversity and addressing racial and ethnic inequalities in health care, as well as a glossary of common health insurance terms.

— WebWireID108027 —

Business Announcements

Health Care / Hospitals

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Celebrating 100 years of academic excellence, teaching life values and looking good while doing so

San Francisco, CA (November 17, 2009) – In 1909, when Star of the Sea School in San Francisco was formed, the City was well on its way to recovery after the disastrous 1906 earthquake. All around the City, residents and institutions like the Cliff House and the Palace Hotel were celebrating their rebirth. Fashion, too, was having a rebirth, with a new silhouette emerging from the fashion houses of Paris: the pigeon-breast shapes popular at the turn of the century were giving way to a narrower, straighter silhouette. Amidst this backdrop, Star of the Sea School was established by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and their legacy lives on in this thriving inner Richmond school turning out many of this city's finest and most fashionable students.

To celebrate its centennial, Star of the Sea is presenting 'An Evening of Stars', a centennial fashion show modeled by Star of the Sea alumni and families on December 6, 2009. The event takes place from 4:30-5:30 at the school gymnasium on 8th Avenue between Geary and Clement in San Francisco, followed by a boutique with proceeds benefitting the school.

After leaving behind the traditional navy blue and white uniforms of Star of the Sea, alumni have donned clothing as varied as furs, football helmets and vestments, although to our knowledge none have worn all those items at the same time. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, we present some notable Star of the Sea alumni and reflect on their fashion choices.

Perhaps the best-known of all Star alumni is Grace Ethel Cecilia Rosalie Allen, better known as Gracie Allen, who according to her bio loved to shop and had a fondness for furs, beautiful clothes and ¾ length sleeves. Although early records are murky, due in part to birth certificates and documentation being lost in the 1906 earthquake, and also in part to Gracie's coyness, she was born in the late 1890s and graduated from Star of the Sea in 1914. She's best known as the zany partner to George Burns, and was a gifted comedienne beloved by many. She passed away in 1964. Today Star of the Sea's computer lab bears her name, from a gift given by her estate.

John Talesfore graduated from the Star of the Sea grammar school in 1974. His fond memories of Star include 'Hot Dog Day' once a month, and endless fights with seagulls for scraps left unguarded. A fashion plate who 'never met a mirror he didn't like', according to his father, Talesfore was widely known for his platform shoes, cow bells and silky polyester shirts on the rare and much-anticipated free dress day. He went on to study architecture for two years at Cal, before realizing he might have a vocation to the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1989, and now serves as pastor at St. Mary's Cathedral. 'When I found out that black is always in style, that's when I made the logical choice of profession,' says Father Talesfore. He also claims the snazzy Star of the Sea uniform got him hooked on fashion, but we think he's just humoring us.

'I can honestly and proudly say that anything I have been given spiritually and academically is founded in my Star of the Sea education,' said Father Talesfore.

Another Star alumnus favors shoulder pads and a football helmet. He is Zac Lee, starting quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Lee, the son of an NFL quarterback, graduated from Star of the Sea in 2001. He was a standout in Star athletics and continued his prowess at St. Ignatius, where he was a 3 year starter in both football and baseball, and the first SI player in 23 years to be named offensive player of the year in the West Catholic Athletic Conference. He went on to star in both football and baseball for one year at City College before making his big Midwest move.

Classic clothes of the 20s, 30s and 40s will be featured in the Star of the Sea Fashion Show, and perhaps none wears them better today than cabaret singer Mary Cleere Haran. Haran, whose performances were lovingly covered in Entertainment Weekly in 1999, is another alumna that Star is proud to call its own. She covers the great American songbook, and has performed in prestigious clubs from coast to coast, including the Algonquin in New York.

Star of the Sea joins with all of its alumni to celebrate 100 years of academic excellence, teaching life values and looking good while doing so. To learn more about the centennial celebration and the fashion show, contact Star of the Sea:

Telephone: 415-221-3399 (Centennial Hotline for information and messages)
Email: alumni@staroftheseasf.com
Website: www.staroftheseasf.com/centennial

# # #

About Star of the Sea
Founded in 1909 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Star of the Sea Schools include the preschool and elementary school under the authority of the parish, serving a diverse population of girls and boys. Our schools are nurturing, dynamic, and constantly evolving environments that support academic achievement, develop moral and spiritual character, and encourage students to be globally aware and become lifelong learners and problem solvers. Star's graduates are consistently accepted to and excel in San Francisco's top Catholic, public and private high schools, including Sacred Heart Cathedral, Saint Ignatius, Riordan, Mercy, ICA, Lowell, and University. Star of the Sea is located at 360 9th Avenue in San Francisco's inner Richmond neighborhood.

— WebWireID107859 —

Education

Lifestyle / Society

Religion

Sports

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Results from Phoenix International Raceway
1. Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Chevrolet
5. Martin Truex Jr., No. 1 Rain-X® Chevrolet
8. Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Chevrolet

Avondale, AZ. - The 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is coming to a close as teams entered Phoenix International Raceway for race nine of the 10 race Chase for the Championship. Team Target came into the weekend sixth in points and looking to gain some ground on the top five. Juan Pablo Montoya would run in the top-10 the entire race and eventually cross the finish line in the eighth position. It marked the team's 18th top-10 of the season and the strong finish moved Montoya within four points of the fifth position in the Chase standings.

Team Target started the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 from the 17th position and wasted no time moving to the front under a long green flag run. By lap 68, Montoya had settled into the top-10 and never looked back. Just four pit stops were made throughout the 312-lap event for fuel, tires and minor adjustments to help with the handling of the car.

The race would be run primarily under green flag conditions with only 23 laps displayed under caution. The final caution flag of the day waved on lap 171 and Montoya restarted in the 10th position. Over the course of the next 134 green flag laps Montoya was able to gain a few valuable positions and take the checkered flag in the eighth position.

The 2009 season finale is up next as 12 Chase drivers battle it out for the last time at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Montoya and Team Target enter the race looking for their first oval track win of the season and a shot at finishing out the season in the top-five of the point standings. Montoya currently sits 289 points out of first and just four points out of fifth.

The Ford 400 will air on ABCTV and stations affiliated with MRN radio on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).

For more information log onto: www.earnhardtganassi.com

— WebWireID107849 —

Automotive

Big Box Retail / Supermarkets

Entertainment

Retail

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Daimler AG and McLaren Group change form of their cooperation

Stuttgart, Germany, Mercedes-Benz will enter the Formula 1 World Championship with its own team, beginning with the 2010 season, and Daimler AG and McLaren Group will change their form of cooperation ...

Stuttgart, Germany, Mercedes-Benz will enter the Formula 1 World Championship with its own team, beginning with the 2010 season, and Daimler AG and McLaren Group will change their form of cooperation with effect as of 13 November 2009. This was announced by Daimler AG today.

Daimler AG together with Aabar Investments PJSC will take over 75.1 per cent of the Brawn GP team, with Daimler taking 45.1 per cent and Aabar 30 per cent. The rest of the 24.9 per cent will remain with the current stakeholders. With 9.1 per cent, Aabar is the biggest single shareholder of Daimler AG. This transaction is subject to the approval of the EU and the Swiss cartel authorities.

The background to this decision are the new terms and conditions for Formula 1. The 'Resource Restrictions' set by FOTA and FIA effectively limit expenditure for the design, construction and running of the racing cars. In addition, there will be a significantly higher income available for a Formula 1 team generated by the commercial rights of the racing series following the signing of the new Concorde Agreement.

The partnership between McLaren Mercedes has been in place since 1995 and ended its 15th joint Formula 1 season in 2009. The change to the form of cooperation is taking place by mutual agreement. Mercedes-Benz and McLaren will continue to cooperate with each other and the supply of engines could continue until 2015.

The McLaren Group have set themselves new targets, especially in the automo-tive sector, and Daimler understands and respects these new strategic objectives. For this reason, it has been agreed that the buy-back by the McLaren Group of the 40 per cent McLaren share owned by Daimler AG will be completed by 2011.

By taking this decision, Mercedes-Benz resumes its marvellous motor racing history on the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows, the world's most unique racing cars. Mercedes wants to continue the tradition in the style of these flawless Silver Arrows, which put their stamp on each era by winning the majority of the races they competed in.

'Mercedes-Benz is the most valued and best-known premium automotive brand in the world. This brand looks for competition of the utmost quality in all relevant fields in order to continually improve its performance in the face of such new challenges', explains Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. 'Due to the new Formula 1 environment, we will face the competition in future on the most important motor sports stage with our own Silver Arrow works team. Our new Silver Arrow Formula 1 team is a great sporting and technical challenge and we will tackle this with sporting spirit and full of enthusiasm.'

Mercedes-Benz will restructure their Formula 1 programme and work hard to achieve further savings, going beyond the already completed steps for significant cost reductions and improved efficiency.

Since 1995, the beginning of the partnership, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz have competed in 256 Grand Prix events and have achieved 60 victories. In 1998, 1999 and 2008, the British-German team won the drivers' World Championships, as well as the World Constructors' Championship in 1998. The McLaren Mercedes team became runner-up in the World Championships ten times, with five times in the drivers' and constructors' rankings respectively.

After winning the drivers' title with Lewis Hamilton last year, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes finished third in the World Constructors' Championships this year. The 2008 World Champion won two races with his current car, the MP4-24, achieving a first historic victory with the brake energy-recovery system, KERS Hybrid. No other driver scored more points in the last eight races from the season's total of 17 races than Lewis Hamilton.

'I want to thank McLaren for a successful collaboration over the last decade and a half', says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. 'For the benefit of both Mercedes and McLaren, we will continue our partnership cooperation in future. We will be rivals on-track but, off-track, we will co-operate with McLaren and the other teams in order to create the best possible product for spectators worldwide.'

'We look back on 15 successful years of great collaboration with McLaren; in that time, we won four world-championship titles and finished ten times as runner-up in the drivers' and constructors' rankings,' states Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. 'Since the first victory in the 1997 Australian Grand Prix, the modern Silver Arrows have achieved a total of 60 victories in 223 races to ensure that our brand symbol, the star, stands for the greatest successes in Formula 1. We thank our partner and will continue to work with McLaren based on an excellent partnership.'

Mercedes Grand Prix, the management team of the former Brawn GP team, will continue to work under the leadership of Ross Brawn, who will continue in his well-known role. The Formula 1 team, as well as the engine team of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, will be co-ordinated by Mercedes-Benz Mo-torsport, headed by their Vice-President, Norbert Haug.

"Brawn GP has been through an incredible journey over the last 12 months. From fighting for our survival to forging a strong relationship with Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, winning both the Constructors' and Drivers' World Championships, and now accepting Daimler and Aabar's offer to buy our team, which will secure its future', Team Principal Ross Brawn looks back on a difficult beginning of the year which eventually turned into an extremely successful season.
"Both I and my fellow Directors at Brawn GP are incredibly proud of our staff, drivers and everyone associated with our team and thank them for their commit-ment, outstanding teamwork and their focus on achieving results in sometimes difficult circumstances. The senior management group will remain in place to lead our team and on behalf of everyone at Brawn GP, we are honoured to be rep-resenting such a prestigious brand as Mercedes-Benz in Formula One next year and will be working together to do our best to reward their faith in our team."

The new Silver Arrow team, Mercedes Grand Prix, will compete in Formula 1 as a works team in its own right. Synergies between the 100 per cent Daimler-owned subsidiary Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth, UK, and the Mercedes Grand Prix team based about 28 miles from there in Brackley in the UK, will create even greater efficiency.

It is our target to develop a model for our Formula 1 activities which will initially be run with significantly reduced budgets by Mercedes-Benz and which, in the foreseeable future, will be self-financing', comments Norbert Haug.

'Further-more, we naturally want to inspire our faithful spectators and TV viewers world-wide and maximize media coverage for our brand. With Formula 1, Mercedes-Benz can continue to clearly demonstrate its willingness to compete and win on the most important motor sports competition stage in the world.'

Khadem Al Qubaisi, Chairman, Aabar Investment PJSC comments: "Aabar is delighted to join forces with Daimler AG and its world leading brand Mercedes-Benz in order to create a new Formula One Team which follows in the footsteps of the longstanding and successful tradition of the famous 'Silver Arrows'.
'Ever since Aabar became the largest shareholder in Daimler AG, the cooperation between our two organisations has been exemplary, and we have already co-invested in Tesla. Aabar is confident that further successes will follow in this arena.

'Bearing in mind the recent outstanding success of the Abu Dhabi GP, which brought Formula One to the United Arab Emirates for the first time, it is espe-cially exciting to realise that next year, our own cars will be in the field, with the genius of Ross Brawn, who is still deeply involved with the team, now backed by the unrivalled excellence of Mercedes-Benz across the entire spectrum of automotive technology. It is a fantastic prospect, which makes me both pleased and proud for my country.'

— WebWireID107827 —

Advertising / Marketing

Automotive

Entertainment

Financial Markets

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Fall 2009 was a very productive season for scuba diving instructor trainers in Montreal.

MONTREAL, QC, Canada – Nov. 16 ,2009 – In September and October, ten divers from Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec started their instructor development course at Total Diving. While three of them chose to wait until next Spring before completing their training, seven of them became PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Instructors (OWSI) at a PADI-conducted IE (Instructor Examination) held in Montreal during the first week-end of November.

During the same training period, three current PADI scuba diving instructors completed their training to become "IDC Staff Instructors". An IDC Staff instructor is a master of instructor-level dive theory; knowledge development teaching presentations; and confined water teaching presentations.

During Fall 2009, the pro team at Total Diving also taught dozens of PADI specialty instructor training sessions, including deep diving, wreck diving, nitrox diving, underwater navigation, search & recovery, dry suit diving, night diving and diver propulsion vehicle. Most of these training sessions were held in Kahnawake Quarry at the Total Diving's scuba diving site.

Finally, the pro team at Total Diving trained more than a dozen new EFR instructors ready to teach CPR and first-aid courses to rescue divers; and they are getting ready for a series of DAN instructor training courses later this month. These EFR and DAN instructor courses are offered to divemasters from any scuba diving training agency.

Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a non-profit medical and research organization dedicated to the safety and health of recreational scuba divers and associated with Duke University Medical Center.

PADI is the Professional Association of Diving Instructors located in California.

The PADI instructor development course (IDC) at Total Diving is a 10-day program that prepares individuals to be safe and successful scuba diving instructors. IDC candidates have already reached significant achievements in scuba diving. They are all current divemasters with comprehensive diving experience. At the end of the 10 day program, these dive instructor candidates must pass a 2-day dive instructor examination (IE).

Total Diving is a National Geographic dive center and a PADI Career Development Center in Montreal, QC, Canada, offering scuba diving adventures starting with "learning to dive", up to a career in diving as a scuba diving instructor or instructor trainer, including training programs from the Business of Diving Institute.

— WebWireID107767 —

Business Announcements

Leisure / Travel / Hotels

Sports

Travel Industry

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

HMRC Investigate Sports Clubs for Exploitation of Image Rights Tax Loophole

HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) have become concerned that football and rugby clubs and their players may be exploiting a tax loophole which allows them to avoid paying tax on image rights payments.

HMRC are currently investigating all 12 Guinness Premiership clubs and it is believed that County Cricket and Rugby League clubs are also under scrutiny; top football clubs could be the next big target.

A rugby club official said: 'Some clubs face a potentially huge bill if the Revenue finds instances of image rights being paid in lieu of salary, thus avoiding PAYE and National Insurance, but there is a feeling that it is using rugby and cricket to establish ground rules before moving on to the biggest football clubs.'

Image rights refer to an individual's right to prevent unauthorised use of their name, likeness or any other personal attributes. Sports clubs pay players large sums of money, sometimes up to a fifth of their total salary, for the right to use their image in advertising and in general promotion of the club.

The HMRC is investigating allegations that clubs and players have been placing money gained from image rights transactions into offshore accounts, thus avoiding paying tax on a significant portion of their income.

If the Revenue is successful in proving the sums are taxable, it could be backdated until 2006.

Kevin Kinsella, Chief Executive of the UK's foremost tax investigation firm KinsellaTax Investigations Ltd., noted, 'I read with interest that HMRC are planning on investigating sports clubs as I have previously acted on behalf of a number of high profile football league players; mainly of the old brigade. There is a potentially huge, un-tapped source of backdated tax here. There are examples where the image rights of a player are worth more to a club than their contribution on the field and so it is thought that the HMRC might target those players, particularly when it moves on to the bigger football clubs.'

Damien Hopley, Chief Executive of the Professional Rugby Players' Association says they are not worried by the investigation.

'The only issue we would have is if we felt unfair penalties were being imposed. All we want from HMRC is clarity.'

For more information regarding this issue and HMRC tax investigations in general, contact KinsellaTax Investigations Ltd. http://www.kinsellatax.co.uk/.

— WebWireID107800 —

Banking / Financial Services

Legal Issues

Lifestyle / Society

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Young athletes need dual screening tests for heart defects, study suggests

Using just 1 popular test or the other could miss serious cardiac abnormalities - - To best detect early signs of life-threatening heart defects in young athletes, screening programs should include bot...

Using just 1 popular test or the other could miss serious cardiac abnormalities

To best detect early signs of life-threatening heart defects in young athletes, screening programs should include both popular diagnostic tests, not just one of them, according to new research from heart experts at Johns Hopkins.

Sudden cardiac death due to heart rhythm disturbances is blamed for more than 3,000 deaths a year in young people, especially athletes who have inherited tendencies to develop overly enlarged and thickened hearts, says Theodore Abraham, M.D., an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its Heart and Vascular Institute. In some instances, top athletes have died from heart conditions while seemingly in peak physical form, something that can hide warning signs and allow many cases to go undiagnosed.

In a study to be presented Nov. 15 at the American Heart Association's (AHA) annual Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Abraham and colleagues analyzed data from 134 top Maryland high school athletes that they screened at the 2008 track and field state championships. The researchers were looking for life-threatening cardiac abnormalities, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathies. Doctors took a medical history, took weight and blood pressure measurements and listened for unusual heartbeats or murmurs. They also conducted an echocardiogram — a cardiac ultrasound, or ECHO — to measure heart size and pumping function and to check for faulty heart valves; and an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to assess the heart's electrical rhythms.

None of the student athletes were found to have life-threatening heart defects, but abnormal findings were discovered in 36 athletes. Twenty-two of those abnormalities were found by EKG alone, nine by ECHO alone and five were picked up on both tests. Those with abnormalities -- which included 19 with high blood pressure, 29 with elevated blood pressure in need of future monitoring, and five with low blood pressure readings -- were referred for follow-up to their doctors.

"If you are going to screen, it has to be comprehensive," says Abraham, who spearheads the annual "Heart Hype" screening program run by Johns Hopkins, and designed to serve as a national model for other leading academic medical centers. Some screening programs just include EKGs and not ECHOs. "An EKG does show you a lot," he says, "but it doesn't tell you the whole story. The advantage of a comprehensive screening is that it is holistic, rather than being pinpoint."

For example, if a doctor were screening for prostate cancer, "he wouldn't ignore a large tumor on your head," Abraham says.

Lead study investigator Aurelio Pinheiro, M.D., a postdoctoral research fellow at Hopkins, says he wasn't surprised that he and his colleagues didn't find anyone with a life-threatening heart abnormality since it is estimated that one in 500 Americans has undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the Hopkins team screened fewer than that. Still, he says, the screening program is not just designed to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrest, but also to raise awareness of the risks to young athletes.

Less pressing — but still serious — medical conditions also were found by the researchers, notably high blood pressure, which in teenagers, Pinheiro says, can lead to heart failure or kidney disease 10 or 15 years in the future if left untreated. He adds that two of the track stars examined were obese, which can lead to other health risks in the future if not taken care of.

During this year's screening program, doctors found a serious undiagnosed valve disease in one athlete and found another suffering from a condition they didn't know about that could likely mean a heart transplant in the future. The students had no symptoms.

In some nations, programs to screen teenage athletes and non-athletes for possible heart problems have been routine for years. In 2004, the International Olympic Committee recommended that all athletes be EKG-tested every two years for potential heart abnormalities, regardless of whether they have a history of cardiac trouble. The U.S. Olympic Committee offers voluntary cardiac screening.

Other screening programs have used just EKG and not ECHO, which the study suggests will miss some heart problems.

Some argue that doing expensive diagnostic tests such as the EKG and ECHO are not worth the costs since sudden cardiac death in young people is relatively rare and mass screenings are unlikely to turn up a large number of teens in immediate danger.

Abraham disagrees. "What is the price for a single life?" he asks. "We're counting the costs upfront. We're not counting the savings on the downstream end."

"They're still teenagers. They think and feel like they're at the top of the world," Abraham says. "Athletes and other teens should let someone know how they are feeling, especially if they have had chest pains, shortness of breath with activity or have fainted. This could save their life."

###

The other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study are Daniel Bernard; Veronica L. Dimaano; Saman Nazarian, M.D.; Richard George, M.D.; Reid Thompson, M.D.; and Joel Brenner, M.D. Deepti Bhandare, M.D., and Luis Afonso, M.D., both at Wayne State University in Detroit, were also involved.

For additional information, go to: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/heart_vascular_institute/clinical_services/centers_excellence/hcm.html

— WebWireID107788 —

Education

Health Care / Hospitals

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

Sports

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Perfect Polarization Offered in Three New Luxury Performance™ Sunglass Designs

Newport Beach, CA (November 12, 2009) — Kaenon Polarized™, the Newport Beach-based maker of lifestyle and performance sunglasses, proudly announces the Holiday arrival of three new Luxury Performance frame designs for men and women. The men's and women's sunglass styles are available now online and launched to retail in limited release through Kaenon's premium dealer network, including 20 southwest Nordstrom locations.

Designed in California and made in Italy, PINO™ and BURNET™ are modern, west coast interpretations of retro-period designs that are pure Luxury Performance to be worn equally, by both men and women. JOSS™ was inspired by, and designed with racecar-driving pop star Danica Patrick for women looking for something feminine and stylish, yet comfy and sporty in a women's sunglass.

The initial Holiday 2009 release will make each style available in a rich, gloss black frame with the company's patented SR-91 polarized lens in Grey 12™ as well as a new frame color the company calls Havana – a beautiful tobacco brown accented by deep, dark rich tones. Each frame is hand painted and assembled in Italy following Kaenon's creative direction and strict quality control. Joss will offer Havana with Copper 12™ SR-91 polarized lenses, while Burnet and Pino will house G12 lenses in Havana. Each frame is Rx adaptable with Kaenon's SR-91 prescription lenses – in Single Vision or Freestyle™ Progressive.

PINO
Simple, clean, and stylish, PINO is a modern, west coast take of a 50's-period classic to be worn by both men and women looking for a moderately sized fun, yet functional sunglass. Designed in California, made in Italy, Pino's injection molded TR-90 8-base wrapped frame is pure Luxury Performance. Old school styling with low-key Kaenon branding engraved on a decorative metal inlay, all defy Pino's light weight, performance fit. Only further enhanced by our patented SR-91 polarized lenses that provide unsurpassed razor sharp optical clarity and glare reduction. Pino comes with a protective metal case and is Rx adaptable. MSRP begins at $229.

BURNET
BURNET is a subtle reshaping and condensed interpretation of our popular, retro-inspired Burny™ frame style. Designed to be worn by both women and men equally, it's a timeless, classic design that features subtle, yet distinctive styling with the performance and comfort Kaenon Polarized is known for. Easy to wear for a wide variety of face shapes, and featuring a throw-back temple design highlighted by discrete branding and logo detailing in a pure metal inlay, this durable, performance-wrapped TR-90 frame houses 8-base SR-91 polarized lenses for razor sharp optical clarity and unsurpassed glare reduction. Made in Italy, BURNET comes with a protective metal case and is Rx adaptable. MSRP begins at $229.

JOSS
Inspired by Danica Patrick, and designed with input from the racecar-driving pop star, JOSS is the shapely sister to our popular Georgia™ frame style that Danica has been so instrumental in popularizing. Joss is distinguished by a slightly oversized round lens shape, enhanced by supple, curvy surfaces that taper aft into thin sleek temples that support our female-fit geometry. Made in Italy using TR-90 frame material, Joss is light weight, durable and super comfy, with buried Variflex nose pads for additional comfort and security that come standard as do the wrapped 8-base SR-91 polarized lenses for maximum protection with unsurpassed razor sharp optical clarity and glare reduction. Complete with a protective metal case and Rx adaptable, Joss is the choice in women's sunglasses that begs to be worn...and loves to play! MSRP begins at $209.

Kaenon Polarized has quickly become the luxury performance choice of those who live the Southern California lifestyle to its fullest. Superior lens performance is the engine that differentiates Kaenon Polarized sunglasses, verified by scientists and validated by professionals in both land and water sports such as, sailing, golf, baseball, snow, surf, paddling, fishing, cycling, climbing and driving, as well as celebrities in film and music.

At the core of every Kaenon Polarized sunglass is the company's proprietary and patented SR-91® lens material. No other lens on the market offers better clarity, impact protection, and glare reduction, all in one ultra-lightweight lens. Every SR-91 polarized lens carries a Lifetime Guarantee against delamination, cracking or splitting - including Kaenon Polarized prescription sunglasses made from SR-91 prescription polarized lenses.

With an initial 20+-store launch that started in July, Nordstrom will sell all three new Kaenon Polarized sunglass styles in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii – including its four flagship locations at South Coast Plaza, Fashion Valley Mall, The Grove and Scottsdale. Including Nordstrom in this initial Holiday launch of Burnet, Pino and Joss, demonstrates the success both companies have enjoyed since partnering in July – with sales of Kaenon Polarized sunglasses out-performing Nordstrom expectations.

'Nordstrom has always been the first to recognize true leadership and trend direction in fashion and sensibility, and we're very excited they've shown such confidence in Kaenon Polarized to once again demonstrate their knack for quality product and ability to differentiate themselves with distinctive brands,' said Steve Rosenberg, Co-Founder and CEO of Kaenon Polarized. 'Nordstrom not only understands the trends, they have exceptional insight behind the product that drives those trends,' he added.

Kaenon Polarized. Evolve Optically®.

Founded in 2001 to fill a void in the performance sunglass marketplace, Kaenon Polarized revolutionized the world of sports optics with its patented SR-91 polarized lenses, Light Transmission Level Technology, and award winning polarized sunglasses. With a passion for optical excellence and true sports performance, Steve Rosenberg leveraged his 20+years as an elite-level sailor, Olympic sailing coach, sports marketer and executive in the sports optics industry, and set out with his brother Darren Rosenberg to redefine performance eyewear. With that purpose, Kaenon Polarized introduced SR-91, the most advanced polarized lens available, combining razor-sharp clarity, impact-protection, superior durability and glare-reduction all in one ultra-lightweight lens. Kaenon Polarized's high-performance sunglasses offer superior fit and luxurious style – Luxury Performance™ – for elite athletes and active lifestyle enthusiasts, always with SR-91 prescription and non-prescription lenses, for both men and women.

Announcement Follows Recent Sponsorship Renewal Through 2020 Olympic Games

San Francisco, Visa Inc. (NYSE: V), a Worldwide Olympic Games Sponsor for more than two decades, today announced the global launch of its Olympic-themed marketing campaign for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Go World. This global campaign, which features television, digital and out-of-home advertising, host market merchant activation programs and usage promotions, enables Visa to connect with cardholders and Olympic and Paralympic Games fans to drive preference for and usage of Visa products worldwide.

This launch follows the recent extension of Visa's Olympic Games sponsorship for another eight years - through 2020 - enabling Visa's financial institution clients and merchant partners to continue to build strong relationships with their customers through unique Visa marketing programs.

"Go World builds on the concept that ran so successfully in the United States during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games," said Antonio Lucio, Chief Marketing Officer of Visa Inc. "To connect with Olympic fans globally, we've taken this platform and created a campaign that transcends borders, resonates with fans' sense of national pride, builds our own business and that of our clients, and advances the spirit of the Olympic Movement."

The Go World campaign celebrates athleticism and human triumph through unique athlete stories. It features a wintry blue tone throughout all creative executions and will be customized to maximize local relevance in key markets. The campaign also includes merchant offers, enhanced social media applications and a deeper focus on Visa-sponsored athletes (Team Visa - Vancouver).

US Television Advertising & Customization

On Sunday, November 1, "Get Closer," the first of several television commercials, aired in the United States. "Get Closer" reinforces Visa's history of supporting Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and connects directly with fans through a new Olympic-themed usage promotion. When United States cardholders use their Visa card between November 1 and December 31, 2009, they will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for four to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Each trip will include airfare, hotel, and VIP hospitality access, as well as event tickets, courtesy of Visa. In addition, Visa will award five first prize winners a Panasonic High-Definition Blu-Ray Theater featuring a 58-inch Plasma HDTV and a $500 Visa gift card, and five second prize winners will receive a $500 Visa gift card. Official rules are available at www.visa.com/goworld. No purchase or obligation necessary to enter or win.

The second spot, "Anthem," will air in the coming weeks to build anticipation for the Games with images of a burning Olympic Cauldron and a montage of iconic Olympic Games moments to remind viewers of global commonalities and the power of the Olympic Spirit.

"When we introduced More people go with Visa earlier this year, we focused on people taking action - and the role of Visa in that action," Lucio said. "No group embodies this concept of empowerment more than the thousands of Olympic and Paralympic athletes chasing their Olympic dreams."

Upcoming creative executions of Go World will feature Olympic and Paralympic athletes of the past and present - including a series of television commercials during NBC's broadcast of the 2010 Winter Games in the United States, where Visa will enjoy category exclusivity for the duration.

Similar to More people go with Visa, elements of the Go World campaign will be localized in Canada, Russia, Japan, Korea, China and Latin America to strengthen the campaign's relevance in those markets.

US Go World Web Site

Visa's efforts in the digital space also put the athletes at the center, offering cardholders and Olympic and Paralympic Games fans a unique glimpse at the personal journey of these hopefuls. By providing this behind the scenes access, Visa reinforces its role in the Olympic Movement and strengthens its relationships with millions of Olympic and Paralympic Games fans worldwide.

The campaign will also include an extensive Web site (US- www.visa.com/goworld), which contains exclusive merchant offers, behind the scenes Team Visa - Vancouver training videos, downloadable photos of athletes in action, and athlete training playlists with songs available for purchase. Team Visa - Vancouver (US) athletes featured here include Julia Mancuso (alpine skiing), Lindsey Jacobellis (snowboard, snowboard cross), Ryan St. Onge (freestyle skiing, aerials), Angela Ruggiero (ice hockey), and Paralympian Alexi Salamone (ice sledge hockey).

Athlete widgets will be available for download and posting on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Visa has also worked with its network of merchant partners to provide exclusive offers to Visa cardholders as they prepare for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Available at www.visa.com/goworld, Visa cardholders are able to access savings at popular merchants including The Hilton Family New York City, CoSport, Finish Line, Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental. In the coming weeks, Visa will introduce six Visa Gift Card designs featuring Team Visa - Vancouver athletes and a Whistler landscape image for purchase at Gift Card Mall via www.visa.com/goworld.

The Go World online content will also be customized for Olympic and Paralympic Games fans in Canada and Russia. In Canada, the Go World Web site features Team Visa - Vancouver athletes including Emily Brydon (alpine skiing), Clara Hughes (speed skating), Colette Bourgonje (Paralympic cross-country skiing), Brian McKeever (Paralympic cross-country skiing, biathlon), Jennifer Heil (freestyle skiing, moguls), Alexa Loo (snowboard) and Jeff Christie (luge), mentors Kurt Browning (figure skating), Nathalie Lambert (short track speed skating) and Ian Balfour (Paralympic alpine skiing), and ambassadors Jeffrey Buttle (figure skating), Danielle Goyette (ice hockey) and Diedra Dionne (freestyle skiing, aerials). Russia's Go World Web site spotlights Team Visa - Vancouver athletes OIga Zavyalova (cross-country skiing) and Albert Demchenko (luge).

Athlete Support & Olympic Sponsorship Activation

Visa believes that the Games begin and end with the athletes and has created a unique global program, Team Visa, to provide long-term support to these hopefuls as they prepare for one of the greatest challenges of their lives: competing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since 1986, Visa has empowered thousands of these athletes to achieve their dreams by providing them with financial support, financial literacy training and valuable marketing exposure in pursuit of their goals. In the run-up to the 2010 Winter Games, Visa will support more than 30 individual athletes, all with the potential to be selected for their National Teams. Currently, Team Visa - Vancouver includes top athletes as well as national teams from the United States, Canada, China, Japan and Russia.

Over the past few months Visa has been working with its financial institution clients globally to offer Visa cardholders the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the Games and with national and international merchant partners to help them generate business and excitement among their customers leading up to the Games. Go World is prominent on the interior (register branding, point-of-sale) and exterior (banners) of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Superstore (Hudson Bay Company) in downtown Vancouver. Additionally, Go World will be featured throughout Visa's presence program, including point of sale materials at merchants around Vancouver and Whistler.

Visa remains the only card accepted at 2010 Winter Games venues in Vancouver and Whistler and at select U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the United States. This extends to the purchase of Visa Olympic Winter Games merchandise online, in Olympic Games retail stores and by catalog. At the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Visa installs a special Games ATM network and hundreds of point-of-sale acceptance devices at competition and non-competition venues. Onsite at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Visa personnel will also provide a variety of card payment related services to cardholders.

— WebWireID107422 —

Banking / Financial Services

Business Announcements

Sports

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay visited the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world yesterday. The community of Alert, which is about 817 kilometres from the North Pole, saw twenty torchbearers carry the Olympic flame in temperatures ranging from minus 34°C to minus 27°C. This is the closest that the flame has ever been to the North Pole and was the tenth day of the longest national Olympic Torch Relay in history.

Northern Lights
Since arriving in Victoria, British Columbia, on 30 October, the Vancouver relay has been working its way north and has visited the Yukon, Northern Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut. Thus far, the journey has seen the flame brave extremely cold temperatures and travel in a number of unique ways. The flame has, amongst other things, been transported by dog sled, chuckwagon and Polar Rover.

Mendham, NJ 11/09 - Accelerate Fitness Equipment is pleased to announce the launch of their website, acceleratefitnessequipment.com. This site provides a wealth of information about the revolutionary piece of fitness equipment, the Accelerate Advantage. The Accelerate Advantage has been proven in clinical trials to boost athletic performance by nearly 14 percent without the use of steroids or artificial stimulants.

The device is easy to use. One puts it to the mouth and inhales through it as deeply as possible, then holds this breath for a few seconds. As air passes through the device, a slight magnetic charge is imparted that travels throughout the body and aids in more efficient use of oxygen to transform blood glucose into energy that is readily available at need.

In addition, the muscles used for breathing are strengthened by the slight resistance of breathing through the device, which serves to increase breath capacity during physical exertion and athletic performance.

The website, acceleratefitnessequipment.com contains information about the workings of the device and the clinical trials that prove its effectiveness. Directions for use and information on ordering the device are also available.

For more information about what may prove to be the only completely legal performance enhancing device in all sports, individuals may visit http://www.acceleratefitnessequipment.com.
