Software Leaders Underline Commitment to Customers Around the Globe Using the Microsoft Platform to Tap the Business Value of SAP® BusinessObjects™ Planning and Consolidation Applications

WALLDORF, Germany - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced that Microsoft Corporation supports the SAP® BusinessObjects™ Planning and Consolidation application, version for the Microsoft platform, as a preferred solution for customers running their business applications on the Microsoft platform. The companies are currently identifying potential targeted go-to-market initiatives to accelerate the adoption of SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation among the Microsoft user base, as well as the SAP® BusinessObjects™ Edge Planning and Consolidation application among small to midsize organizations. The companies are also planning to collaborate to further optimize these solutions for the Microsoft platform to deliver superior performance for customers at a lower cost of ownership. The companies aim to help customers tap the business value of a best-in-class application to perform efficient and effective planning, budgeting and forecasting and deliver a faster, more compliant financial close.

"SAP has taken an aggressive stance that its business planning and consolidation product from the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio can be used by all firms, not just SAP customers," said John Hagerty, vice president and research fellow at AMR Research. "The company commits to continued development and support with Microsoft's product stack. Existing customers and prospects should rest assured they can choose the technical platform that makes most sense for them."

"SAP provides a leading unified planning and consolidation solution that delivers value for customers on the Microsoft platform," said Tom Casey, general manager, SQL Server Business Intelligence, Microsoft Corporation. "The application takes advantage of the latest available versions of Microsoft Office 2007, including integration with Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008, enabling customers to use the familiar tools they work with every day while benefiting from the features of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database and SQL Server Analysis Services."

Best-in-Class Solution Brings Business Value for Customers
Part of the portfolio of SAP BusinessObjects enterprise performance management (EPM) solutions, SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation, version for the Microsoft platform, is used today by well-known companies including retail information systems provider Toshiba Tec, oil and energy trader Marquard & Bahls and Iberiabank, a leading North American financial institution.

"We chose the application versus competing solutions based on its flexibility to adapt and evolve as our business grows," explains Mark Herpin, financial planning manager, Iberiabank. "We recently upgraded to the new version in conjunction with an upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and are seeing dramatic performance improvement. We use Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) to calculate most of our banking ratios. Modifying applications and processing can now be done at speed of light compared to before. Reporting performance has exceeded our benchmarks."

Broad Functionality for the Business User
SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation provides business users with a single solution for planning, budgeting, forecasting and financial consolidations. The application allows users to fulfill increasingly strict global regulations and comprehensive legal consolidation requirements.

To provide the most value, and to help customers face the reality of operating in an increasingly complex and globalized world, the application also comes with an International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) starter kit. The kit contains pre-built patented process flows to guide users through the consolidation process and generate consolidated financial statements. Other content, such as charts of accounts and input schedules, is available to help facilitate the transition to IFRS.

In addition to management and legal consolidation capabilities, the application streamlines planning, budgeting and forecasting by supporting top-down and bottom-up planning, which leads to timely, more accurate plans that are aligned with strategic goals. It also helps facilitate collaborative planning across all functions for more accurate budgeting, and enables continuous planning and rolling forecasts to meet rapidly changing business conditions and reduce budget cycle time.

"We see a mutually beneficial opportunity for both Microsoft and SAP to offer customers a best-in-class solution," said Sanjay J. Poonen, executive vice president and general manager, Performance Optimization Applications, SAP. "For SAP, it strengthens our commitment to operate in both SAP and non-SAP environments. Customers choosing SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation, version for the Microsoft platform, will benefit from an application that drives agile planning and compliant consolidation processes within their organizations. Microsoft's support for SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation further underlines SAP's leading vision, commitment and execution in the EPM market, and underscores the business value that our ongoing strategic partnership delivers to customers."

About SAP
SAP is the world's leading provider of business software(*), offering applications and services that enable companies of all sizes and in more than 25 industries to become best-run businesses.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Expanding the application of thin clients in new computing environments, HP today introduced a variety of thin computing solutions that deliver affordable, simple computing experiences for business and education, as well as integrated client virtualization solutions that extend the power of the data center to the desktop.

Extending HP's industry-leading thin computing portfolio, the new solutions include:

    * HP thin client platforms designed to optimize the end-user experience for client virtualization by delivering higher performance and remarkable ease of use.
* HP client virtualization solutions that provide a high-quality user experience and increased scalability and reliability in a secure environment at a breakthrough price.
* HP MultiSeat solution that can double computing seats without expanding IT budgets for smaller computing environments, with simple set up and low energy use.

In addition to HP MultiSeat, HP introduced specifically tailored, easy-to-manage education solutions – HP TeachNow and HP SchoolCloud – that make it easier to teach with technology while reducing overall costs.

'Businesses and educational institutions are looking for alternatives to traditional personal computing, such as client virtualization or multiseat computing, to centralize management and increase security, while reducing their total cost of ownership,' said Robert Moctezuma, vice president, Desktop Solutions Organization, Personal Systems Group, HP. 'Customers recognize HP is the only provider that can design, deploy and manage complete thin computing and client virtualization solutions – from the desktop to the data center – that meet IT and user needs.'

Customers cut costs and increase efficiencies with HP

New York-based JetBlue Airways needed a way to cut long-term costs for airport-based technology and improve security. The airline installed nearly 1,400 HP thin clients, which were supported by JetBlue's central data center and backed by 25 HP ProLiant server blades. Today, more than 12,000 JetBlue crew members use the HP thin clients at curbside check-in, ticket counters, and gate and back office locations at airports.

'In terms of maintenance and cost-effectiveness, the 'thick client' model simply wasn't sustainable for us. We realized it was critical to increase efficiency and manageability to drive down costs,' said Pat Thompson, director, IT Operations, JetBlue Airways. 'Our decision to deploy HP Thin Clients is expected to save nearly $5 million over five years, while improving customer satisfaction.'

Thin computing platforms deliver new levels of performance and value

    * The new HP t5740 and HP t5745 Flexible Series Thin Clients deliver a superb computing experience for client virtualization deployments. The t5740 Flexible Series Thin Clients feature Intel® Atom N280 processors and an Intel GL40 chipset, enabling a power-efficient and rich PC experience delivered with the dependability of a thin client. HP Flexible Series Thin Clients can grow with a business, providing eight USB 2.0 ports and an optional PCI expansion module for easy upgrades. The HP Flexible Series also meets stringent ENERGY STAR®, EPEAT® Silver and Energy Using Products Directive (EuP) Lot 6 requirements.
* HP Flexible Series Thin Clients support rich multimedia for visual display solutions, including the new HP LD4700 47-inch Widescreen LCD Digital Signage Display. The HP LD4700 can run 24/7 in both bright and dim lighting while maintaining longevity, and can be set in either a horizontal or vertical position. In addition, with the new HP Digital Signage Display (DSD) Wall Mount, users can hang the display on a wall to showcase videos, graphics or text in a variety of commercial settings where an extra-large screen is desired.
* The HP t5325 Essential Series Thin Client is an affordable, power-efficient thin client with a new interface that simplifies setup and deployment. It offers a combination of features unique in its class and enables local web access and basic multimedia support.
* All new HP Thin Clients now include intuitive setup tools that streamline configuration and management into a short series of easy-to-follow steps. The ThinPro Setup Wizard for Linux and HP Easy Config for Microsoft Windows® help customers quickly choose the right configurations for their virtual environment in just a few clicks. In addition, HP thin clients also include on-board utilities that automate deployment of new connections, properties, low-bandwidth add-ons and image updates from one centralized repository to thousands of thin clients.

New client virtualization solutions extend the power of the data center to the desktop

HP is extending the power of its Converged Infrastructure strategy to help customers accelerate the delivery of client virtualization with solutions that combine servers, storage, software and thin clients, along with services and support.

    * Three new client virtualization architectures that combine Citrix XenDesktop 4, Citrix XenApp or VMware View™ with HP ProLiant servers, storage and thin clients to provide midsize to large businesses with a range of scalable and affordable offerings that meet the performance and reliability needs of task workers and knowledge workers.
* HP ProLiant WS460c G6 Workstation Blade brings centralized, mission-critical security and reliability to workstation computing by delivering a breakthrough user experience that also allows individuals or teams to work and collaborate remotely and securely. This solution meets the performance and scalability needs for high-end visualization and handling of large model sizes demanded by enterprise segments such as engineering and oil and gas.
* HP Client Automation 7.8, part of the HP Business Service Automation software portfolio and fully supporting Windows 7, allows customers to easily deploy and migrate to a virtual desktop infrastructure environment and manage it through the entire life cycle. It manages traditional and virtual client environments – including all thin clients, virtual back-end infrastructure and traditional PCs – with a common methodology that reduces management costs and complexity. Customers also capture inventory and usage information to help size their initial virtual client deployment and reoptimize as end-user needs change over time.
* New HP Technology Services implementation, support and education offerings help organizations lower complexity and risk with new business value services that provide a reliable path to client virtualization:
o HP Transformation Experience Workshop helps customers build their strategy for virtualized solutions, identify a high-level roadmap and get executive consensus in a one-day intensive session.
o HP Business Benefit Workshop allows customers to identify, quantify and analyze the business benefits of client virtualization as well as set return-on-investment targets prior to entering the planning stage.
o Enhanced HP Solution Architecture and Pilot Service ensures the successful integration of the client virtualization solution into the customer's infrastructure through a clear roadmap, architectural blueprint and phased implementation strategy.
* HP Enterprise Services extends the value of HP's client virtualization solutions by hosting the customer's applications and data in a remote data center.
* Recently announced HP business computing bundles bring end-to-end IT capabilities to small business owners. The bundles, which include HP Thin Clients, HP ProLiant tower servers and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, efficiently deliver Windows desktops, business applications and remote access while improving security and reducing total costs.

HP MultiSeat Solution doubles computing seats without expanding IT budgets

The HP MultiSeat Solution stretches the computing budgets of small businesses and other resource-constrained organizations by delivering up to twice the computing seats as traditional PCs for the same IT spend.

HP MultiSeat uses the excess computing capacity of a single PC to give up to 10 simultaneous users an individualized, fully supported and licensed Microsoft Windows 7 computing experience. This not only helps organizations affordably increase computing seats, but also simplifies IT management with setup simple enough for non-technical users and reduces energy consumption by as much as 80 percent per user over traditional PCs.

Pricing and availability(1)

    * HP t5740 Flexible Series Thin Client starts at $429 and is currently available
* HP 5745 Flexible Series Thin Client starts at $399 and is currently available
* HP t5325 Essential Series Thin Clients starts at $199 and is expected to be available Dec. 1
* HP LD4700 47-inch Widescreen LCD Digital Signage starts at $1,799 and is currently available
* HP ProLiant WS460c G6 Blade Workstation starts at $3,044 and is currently available

More information about this announcement is available in an online press kit at http://www.hp.com/go/virtualization09.

About HP

HP creates new possibilities for technology to have a meaningful impact on people, businesses, governments and society.

Innovative Sensor Hardware, Software and Collaboration Tools to Provide Enhanced Visibility and Collaboration During the Journey of a Shipment

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), today announced SenseAwareSM powered by FedEx, a next generation, first-of-its-kind information service that combines a GPS sensor device and a web-based collaboration platform. Developed by the FedEx innovation team, SenseAware will provide increased access to information between business partners and customers to aid in the management of supply chain interactions and will target the life sciences industry at launch.

Available in the spring of 2010, SenseAware is an open, highly adaptive and easy-to-use sensor information sharing platform. It is a multi-modal solution that will serve customers who desire near real-time visibility and insight into their shipments. SenseAware will provide business decision makers the ability to quickly and easily collaborate on many types of information data across their global supply chain.

SenseAware is permitted by the Federal Aviation Administration to be used during flight on FedEx aircraft and will allow customers to monitor in-transit conditions during ground transportation.

A SenseAware device riding with a FedEx shipment can provide the following information:

    * Precise temperature readings
* A shipment's exact location
* When a shipment is opened or if the contents have been exposed to light
* Real-time alerts and analytics between trusted parties regarding the above vital signs of a shipment

SenseAware can be easily adopted as it does not require a costly software installation, infrastructure or large managed-service commitments. The added flexibility of the SenseAware device enables it to be used for single shipments or in large palletized shipments.

"One of the basic needs we saw was a sensor-based logistics industry that wasn't solidifying as quickly as we thought it should around useful sharing of sensor information," said Robert B. Carter, executive vice president and chief information officer, FedEx Corp. "We developed a point-of-view that sharing sensor information dynamically and in useful ways with supply chain partners proved too difficult, so we attacked this on a number of fronts and the result is SenseAware."

Life Science Industry First to Benefit from SenseAware

Available in 2010, SenseAware will initially target the health care and life sciences industry. SenseAware was created through intensive research and beta-testing with customers within those industries. Pilot customers immediately recognized the benefits of the technology during an internal testing phase and realized the potential to shorten inventory turnaround time on closed loop shipments by having complete inbound visibility to all shipments.

"Life science companies are looking to squeeze more value out of their existing data, both upstream and downstream, to improve workflow, process efficiency, and strategic insight across the enterprise," says Eric Newmark, research manager, IDC Health Insights. "With SenseAware, FedEx is seeking to give business users next-generation sensing capabilities, coupled with an information service that provides a new level of visibility to critical information. This collaborative model could help businesses overcome many of the challenges commonly faced in delivering world-class healthcare services."

Shipments within the life sciences industry are often very high value and/or extremely time sensitive. In this industry, knowing the location of such packages during the shipping process is highly desirable. By providing extensive aggregated data shipment information, the technology will help life science customers comply with audits and quality checks, which occur regularly on such highly regulated products, For example, within the industry, many shipments must remain within a specified ambient or cold-chain temperature range to be effective for use in patient care. By having the correct and necessary data, users can make the proper business decisions to replenish or make other arrangements to meet the business requirement.

A limited number of SenseAware sensor devices are expected to be available during the initial launch for U.S. customers within the healthcare and life sciences industry.

About SenseAware

SenseAware combines the power of FedEx innovation and the FedEx brand to bring a unique service offering that is first of its kind in the FedEx portfolio.

"SenseAware is more than a technology solution for the supply chain," said Laurie A. Tucker, senior vice president of marketing, FedEx Services. "SenseAware combines the power of the FedEx brand and heritage of innovation with a new product and platform to serve the customers of the broad transportation and logistics industry. We are motivated and driven to create, market and cultivate yet another breakthrough that has the capability to transform the life sciences industry."

Customers and businesses can learn more about SenseAware on www.senseaware.com.

About FedEx

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. With annual revenues of $34 billion, the company offers integrated business applications through operating companies competing collectively and managed collaboratively, under the respected FedEx brand. Consistently ranked among the world's most admired and trusted employers, FedEx inspires its more than 275,000team membersto remain "absolutely, positively" focused on safety, the highest ethical and professional standards and the needs of their customers and communities.

* Acquisition enables Agfa Graphics to significantly increase its presence in large format inkjet printing
* Gandi's portfolio of mid-range large format printers is completely complementary to Agfa Graphics' inkjet business
* The proposed transaction will allow Agfa Graphics to serve a large installed base.

Mortsel (Belgium) – Toronto (Canada) - Agfa Graphics announces that it has reached an agreement to acquire most of the assets of Gandi Innovations Holdings LLC's North American operations and the shares of its principal foreign subsidiaries.
Gandi Innovations is a global leader in large format inkjet systems.
Since May 2009, it has been operating under CCAA protection in Canada and Chapter 15 in the USA.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory and court approval and the successful closing of the transaction. The price of the transaction is not being disclosed at this point of time, but it will have no major impact on Agfa's financial debt.

Over the period 2001-2009, Gandi Innovations has created a large installed base of inkjet printing engines, reaching a sales peak of 127 million USD in 2008. Sales in 2009 have strongly suffered from the economic crisis (affecting in particular investment goods) and the uncertainty surrounding the company. Gandi Innovations' long established team has a wealth of pioneering expertise and engineering excellence in large format printing technology. Gandi Innovations' customers include many of the world's leading Point of Purchase and large format printing companies. Over the years, they have come to rely on the company's vision, reliability and cutting-edge technology.

Gandi Innovations was founded in 2001 and has its headquarters and its production facilities in Mississauga (Canada). The Group employs 256 highly skilled staff and operates worldwide through sales offices and distributors.

Combined with recent announcements on Agfa Graphics' :M-Press Tiger industrial flatbed inkjet press and the launch of new printing engines in the :Anapurna large format range, the acquisition of the assets of Gandi Innovations strengthens Agfa Graphics' leadership in large format inkjet printing systems.

"The combination of Gandi Innovations' products and Agfa Graphics' products will result in substantial growth for our inkjet business based on an even more complete system portfolio," said Richard Barham, Agfa Graphics' Vice President Inkjet. "This is an important step in implementing our Inkjet growth strategy. As our own portfolio consists of entry-level and high-end inkjet systems, Gandi Innovations' mid-range systems are a 100% complementary fit with our existing inkjet technology."

Gandi Innovations' CEO and co-founder Hary Gandy added: "Joining Agfa Graphics offers Gandi Innovations' staff and customers tremendous opportunities for the future. The combined capabilities and coverage in customer service and research and development will accelerate the launch of new products, deliver new business opportunities and further expand our service to our customers."

More information on Agfa-Gevaert, Agfa Graphics and Gandi Innovations can be found on their respective websites: www.agfa.com - www.gandinnovations.com.

— WebWireID107848 —

Art / Graphics / Photography

Business Announcements

Financial Markets

Office Products

Publishing / Information Services

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

GENBAND, OneSource and RapidAdvance Rely on crystalreports.com to Standardize the Reporting Process, Minimize Reporting Errors and Improve Data Quality

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. - In order to maximize their IT capital budgets, companies are placing increased emphasis on improving insight and decision-making processes for business users. Demonstrating how implementing simple solutions with high time-to-value can help companies solve problems, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced continued momentum for its SAP® BusinessObjects™ OnDemand offerings. Three additional companies – GENBAND, OneSource and RapidAdvance – are successfully using the crystalreports.com application to instantly share accurate, timely business reports and information over the Web. Since SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand offerings are delivered as software as a service (SaaS) and complement a company's existing business intelligence (BI) investments, they help deliver quick value to business units at minimal cost, without dependency on IT.

GENBAND Improves Business Insight
GENBAND is a Texas-based global supplier of next-generation IP infrastructure, and uses a salesforce.com application to support its customer relationship management (CRM) processes. With its technology needs increasing, GENBAND was outgrowing the reporting capabilities of its current solution. Looking for a solution with greater BI functionality for improved analysis and insight, GENBAND considered several options before selecting one of the SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand offerings: the crystalreports.com application. GENBAND now has access to customized, automated reports that provide a view of the entire lifecycle of a trial opportunity – which is when a prospect requests a quote or 'trial' of the product – enabling the company to more effectively track sales. In addition, GENBAND is better equipped to act on timely information about each new and existing customer, improving customer service overall.

'We were looking for a solution that was not only cost-effective and offered a quick implementation, but also one that was easy to use and customizable for our needs,' said Angie Reese, CRM Business Applications manager, GENBAND. 'What really stands out about crystalreports.com is the way we can manipulate the data, tie it all together and deliver several different objects in the report. Users can come in and pull the report every morning, knowing that they have the latest metrics.'

OneSource Provides Timely Reporting for its Sales and Marketing Teams
Headquartered in Massachusetts and with locations overseas, OneSource is a global provider of business information that includes company profiles, executive profiles, and news and analyst reports – all rolled together into a single solution. OneSource was relying on reporting provided by its CRM system and data pulled into Microsoft Excel or Access, which resulted in a significant amount of manual intervention. The company turned to crystalreports.com to run reports on a regular basis, at the same time every day, and to distribute them to sales and marketing managers throughout the company.

'Managers can now look at reports when they first arrive in the office, regardless of time zone, see what kind of lead flow and activity they've had from the previous day, and act accordingly,' said David Heiss, vice president of Sales Operations, OneSource. 'As an added bonus, our management team now has relevant information about the state of the business at their fingertips, whenever they need it, and almost no training was needed to accomplish any of this – it was very simple to get them up and running. By having crystalreports.com become part of daily operations, it has freed up a tremendous amount of sales operations resources as a result.'

RapidAdvance Overhauls Business Intelligence Without Reliance on Tech Support
Based in Maryland, RapidAdvance is a leading direct provider of cash advance services for small and midsize businesses. As a quickly growing business with thousands of customers, RapidAdvance recognized the importance of gaining fast and easy access to reliable, real-time corporate information, and the need to migrate toward automated reporting. But RapidAdvance lacked a large IT department that would traditionally manage the technical requirements involved in accessing data, reporting and broad-based information sharing. The company selected three solutions from the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio – Crystal Reports® software, crystalreports.com and Xcelsius® software – and successfully rolled out a comprehensive reporting package without reliance on help from IT.

'Most small businesses and midsize enterprises lack the necessary resources to hire full-time developers or report writers,' said Kirk Keshishian, analyst, RapidAdvance. 'With crystalreports.com, I was able to automate meaningful business intelligence in a matter of days. With the free trial I could re-create – and improve – all of our reports. For someone to walk in without report creation experience and create such a large library of business reports speaks to the user-friendliness of the products.'

SAP Offerings Allow Companies to Affordably Bring Clarity and Insight to Business Processes
Companies across industries and geographies have found business success with SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand offerings. Through solutions like crystalreports.com, companies can share reports over the Web, instead of by e-mail or hard copy, and give users the power and access they need to execute decisions instantly, based on the most current information.

'By granting anyone on the Internet instant access to the most accurate information and timely reports, an organization can move at the speed necessary today,' said Marge Breya, executive vice president and general manager, Intelligence Platform Group and SAP NetWeaver Solution Management, SAP. 'The value provided by SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand offerings continues to resonate with the market as companies look for new, innovative and – perhaps most importantly – cost-effective ways to be in command of their business.'

For more information on SAP BusinessObjects OnDemand offerings, please visit www.ondemand.com/businessintelligence. The website sells high quality OEM brand and compatible printer supplies; laser toner and ink cartridges; fax and copier toners from major brand names such as Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, HP, Konica, Kyocera, Lexmark, Okidata, Ricoh, Samsung and Xerox.

Buying a compatible toner is a great way to save money. Compatible toner cartridges purchased from PrinterExperts.com cost 40%-70% less than the OEM branded equivalents, and they come with a 30-Day Satisfaction guarantee and a 180 day manufacturer warranty.

'Money isn't the only thing that is saved when buying toners online. Think about it for a second,' states Tony Allen, Printer Experts President. 'Isn't a person typically using their computer when they realize their printer is low or out of toner? How much time can that person save by taking a few minutes to find their product and buy the toner online instead of making a trip to the nearest office supply retailer to get it?.'

PrinterExperts.com is owned and operated by Printer Experts LLC.

— WebWireID107665 —

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

New "super coating" hints at how smart materials, nanotechnology will influence future design of office and production products

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tasked with developing ways to extend the lifespan of printer components - and reduce their impact on the environment - a group of scientists at Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) have developed a new chemical armor that protects photoreceptors, the light-sensitive elements in xerographic machines. Protected from normal wear and tear, a photoreceptor coated with the new "armor" can survive more than one million revolutions - nearly doubling its usable life.

"The long life of the photoreceptor reduces the need for replacement cartridges, enabling a 33 percent reduction in waste," said Yonn Rasmussen, vice president of the Xerographic Component Systems Group. "Customers experience less down time, and therefore reduced interruptions to work flow, improved productivity, and fewer service calls."

Photoreceptors are multi-layer thin film devices that convert light into electrostatic images. They must be replaced periodically due to surface wear and scratches that can affect image quality.

"This novel long life overcoat is an example of cutting-edge chemistry at work that required both materials and process innovation," said Giuseppa DiPaola-Baranyi, laboratory manager for Materials Integration at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada. "The ultimate goal is to develop photoreceptors that will last the entire life of the machine. For example, when you scratch your hand and you heal, that's a biological process. We are looking at how to mimic nature and leverage our expertise in smart materials design and nanotechnology to create molecules for next-generation photoreceptors with self-healing capabilities."

The new photoreceptor works in the standard machine design with no additional hardware changes or added costs to the customer. This invention has broad applicability across Xerox's product portfolio and is being first implemented in the Xerox 4112™/4127™ light production monochrome printers.

A global, multi-disciplinary team from the Xerox Research Centre of Canada, the Xerographic Component Systems Group engineering team in Webster, N.Y. and the manufacturing team in Venray, The Netherlands, advanced the project from the pilot plant stage in Canada to production in Venray in less than one year, a record time for commercializing a new technology such as this.

— WebWireID107631 —

Chemical

Computer Peripherals

Consumer Electronics

Nanotechnology

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Cisco TelePresence and Cisco WebEx Online Meetings Offered as Managed Services

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Cisco today announced that Magyar Telekom is offering Cisco TelePresenceTM as a managed service in three Central and Eastern European countries: Hungary, Macedonia and Montenegro. Customers can use Cisco TelePresence for virtual meetings internally, as well as for intercompany meetings with partners, customers and suppliers. Over the next several months, Magyar Telekom is planning to extend this service to additional countries in the region.

Additionally, Magyar Telekom offers Cisco WebExTM online meetings as part of its Virtualoso managed services package, designed for small and medium-sized businesses.
Key Facts / Highlights:

    * The Cisco TelePresence experience combines innovative real-time video, audio and interactive technologies to give people a wide variety of face-to-face collaboration experiences. Users feel as though they are sitting in the same room even when the distance between them is hundreds or thousands of kilometers.
* For managed intercompany Cisco TelePresence services, Magyar Telekom is deploying Cisco TelePresence systems at the customers' premises and provides the network connectivity with a dedicated virtual private network (VPN) between the locations. The service is running on Magyar Telekom's quality of service (QOS)-enabled, high security Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) infrastructure.
* Customers can choose from a variety of offerings in the Cisco TelePresence product portfolio to meet the needs of their organization, from a personal Cisco TelePresence system that can sit on a desk to a large virtual meeting room that can seat up to 18 people. New systems are also available for multipurpose conference rooms, reducing the need to set aside a dedicated conference room. Since this is a managed service, customers pay a monthly fee to Magyar Telekom, thus saving on initial capital expenditures.
* Intercompany services connect calls from a Cisco TelePresence room on one corporate network to another Cisco TelePresence room on a different company's network through a secure connection from the service provider. To enable service providers to offer intercompany Cisco TelePresence commercial services, Cisco delivers a fully validated reference architecture that facilitates calls between multiple enterprise networks to traverse the service provider network with no comingling of routes, addresses or data.
* For small and medium-sized businesses, Magyar Telekom is offering Virtualoso managed services, a set of cost-efficient and highly secure communication solutions. Virtualoso Meeting is based on Cisco WebEx, which enables meeting participants to simultaneously share files, carry out a telephone conference through a Magyar Telekom integrated audio bridge, connect via video, exchange chat messages, hold Web polls, and do all this in a highly secure online environment. Meetings can be accessed not only from inside the company but also by outside partners, vendors and customers, without the need to purchase additional hardware or software or set any specific configurations. The system can be used for training and education purposes, for help desk and customer service activities, as well as for online conferences. Customers are supported by a 24x7 service.
* KFKI, a subsidiary of Magyar Telekom and a Cisco Gold Certified Partner, as well as a Cisco TelePresence Advanced Technology Provider in Hungary, designed the managed service offering and provides system integration as well as the Cisco TelePresence meeting reservation software component.

Supporting Quotes:

    * Istvan Papp, chief operating officer of Magyar Telekom, head of Business Services Business Unit (T-Systems)

"A paradigm change is taking place in IT: instead of the purchase of entire systems, the focus is shifting towards the lease of solutions and applications. The principal advantage of managed services is that companies do not need to make upfront investments and can use their innovation budget to develop and expand their own core activities."

    * Otto Dalos, client executive, Cisco Hungary

"With supply chains characterizing most of today's economy, communication and collaboration is becoming a key business function for organizations. Magyar Telekom was early to respond to this need and is now one of the first service providers in Central and Eastern Europe to offer a complete set of intercompany-enabled collaboration solutions for any size company, be they virtual meetings via Cisco TelePresence or online collaborations via Cisco WebEx online meetings. "

About Magyar Telekom

Magyar Telekom is Hungary's principal provider of telecom services. It provides a full range of telecommunications and infocommunications (ICT) services including fixed line and mobile telephony, data transmission and non-voice as well as IT and systems integration services. The business activities of Magyar Telekom are managed by two business units: Consumer services (the home-related services brand T-Home and the mobile communications brand T-Mobile) and Business services (T-Systems brand).

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will manage global print operations at Ingersoll Rand, saving the diversified industrial firm millions by better managing company-wide print spend.

The nine-year Enterprise Print Services (EPS) contract brings multiple output devices, print budgets and vendor support systems under Xerox management. As a result, Ingersoll Rand expects to reduce operational costs by up to 30 percent and improve productivity with faster, easier ways to manage the volume of documents - invoices, service agreements, product manuals and marketing materials - for its diverse base of commercial and industrial customers.

In working with Xerox, Ingersoll Rand will design a document strategy that supports two corporate initiatives - fully integrate the businesses acquired from Trane in June 2008; and centralize and standardize its entire technology infrastructure, making work processes more consistent and efficient for employees.

"Xerox shares our long-term vision for well managed print across our entire company," said William B. Gauld, senior vice president, Ingersoll Rand. "While they optimize our print environment to meet our cost savings, environmental sustainability and customer service goals, we can stay focused on our primary vision of inspiring progress for our customers."

Using a Lean Six Sigma-based approach, Xerox will design a print environment with the appropriate number of output devices, like printers, fax machines, copiers and scanners, to help employees work more efficiently. Ingersoll Rand employees will have help adapting to more efficient technology and work processes through Xerox's change management training and support programs.

"This is not a typical client-supplier contract, it's a partnership that combines strengths from both companies to enhance employee productivity and to communicate more effectively with our broad base of customers," said Diane Richter, global supplier manager, Ingersoll Rand. "Collaborating with Xerox has been easy - and it produced a business model that will keep us competitive, reliable and progressive throughout our relationship."

Xerox will also support Ingersoll Rand's environmental sustainability goals of reducing energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and non-hazardous waste generation by 15 percent each. Using tools such as Xerox's Sustainability Calculator on a monthly basis, the two companies will measure progress and pinpoint new opportunities to reduce paper use and power consumption and minimize landfill waste.

"The economic climate is driving businesses of all sizes to seize the cost-saving opportunity that EPS provides," said Stephen Cronin, president, Xerox Global Services. "Clients like Ingersoll Rand are increasingly looking to Xerox as a strategic partner to innovate the way they do business and drive long-term growth."

Xerox was positioned by Gartner, Inc., in the Leaders Quadrant in the "Magic Quadrant for Managed Print Services Worldwide"1 for 2008 and 2009 and "Magic Quadrant for MFPs and Printers" 2 for 2008 reports. The Magic Quadrants offer visual snapshots of a market's direction, maturity and participants, in which Gartner evaluates vendors on the basis of completeness of vision and ability to execute.

— WebWireID107555 —

Business Announcements

Machinery

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Mendham, NJ 11/09 - Mustang Fax is proud to announce the introduction of free fax to email service for life. Users of Mustang Fax are assigned a 087 fax number that is unique to each individual and whenever a fax comes in for the individual, it is converted to a PDF or TIF file and sent to the individual's registered email address.

Benefits of using this service include being able to receive faxes anywhere in the world that one has access to the internet and email. This can be an important advantage for business people who are on the road a great deal. It also has the advantage of being more private than using a centralized fax center in an office.

Mustang Fax also eliminates the need to ever purchase a new fax machine or worry about adding a dedicated fax line if the business moves to new quarters. It becomes possible to receive multiple faxes at the same time without risk of losing any due to failed transmissions or worry over busy signals. Best of all, the service is provided without monthly subscription fees for the life of the user.

To learn more about the free fax to email solution being offered by Mustang Fax, individuals may visit http://www.mustangfax.co.uk.
Rhodia successfully reduced its printing costs and paper consumption with Lexmark

After one year of partnership, Lexmark International (NYSE: LXK) and Rhodia, the world leader in specialty chemicals, announced today the first results of Rhodia's worldwide printer fleet consolidation.

To overcome the difficulties of managing a multi-vendor, heterogeneous, aging printer fleet consisting of laser and inkjet printers, Rhodia launched the PRIMA (Print Management) project to respond to three main objectives:

    * Reduce printing costs by signing a global printing contract
* Improve user satisfaction by using homogenous, modern and future-proof devices
* Reduce the impact on the environment by consolidating and upgrading the printer fleet and multifunctional devices and by reducing the number of pages printed

Lexmark met the key criteria in Rhodia's list of requirements by proposing a printing strategy tailored to each of the group's entities and supporting the company in printing change management.

The objectives defined at the beginning of the project were achieved within a year of entering into the partnership with Lexmark:

    * The printing devices were consolidated and upgraded on 13 sites. The printer fleet went from 3,170 devices (83 percent personal printers, 17 percent network printers) to 630 new devices (12 percent personal printers, 88 percent network printers), which represents a reduction of 80 percent.
* By upgrading the printer fleet, printing the same number of pages consumes 68 percent less energy, and the number of ink cartridges has been reduced by 25 percent.
* The number of pages printed on operations sites has been reduced by 43 percent whereas the initial objective was 10 percent.
* Seventy-seven percent of the pages printed in black are printed two-sided, which reduced the paper consumption by about 60 percent.

By choosing Lexmark as the printing solutions partner, the initial financial goal to reduce the printing costs on each site by 20 percent was exceeded, and in most cases, was closer to 40 percent.

Lexmark's ability to help Rhodia reduce the environmental impact of office printing also contributed to the success of the project. The environmental impact was reduced in particular by:

    * Configuring two-sided printing by default to reduce the number of pages printed
* Setting up shared devices to replace the numerous personal printers

For example, at the Belle Etoile site, reducing the number of devices and the extensive use of the two-sided function decreased the number of printed pages from 177,000 to 108,000, and the amount of paper consumed each month by 534 kg.

"Lexmark's approach met all our expectations at the financial and environment levels by reducing our paper consumption by almost 60 percent," said Christine Peron, director of IT operations at Rhodia Europe. "We completed this project knowing that our business issues had been heard and understood. Lexmark also developed a printing strategy that was tailored to each of our sites and they helped us change our printing behavior all along."

"Lexmark has strategic partnerships with a number of enterprises around the world that are willing to optimize their printing infrastructures," said Marty Canning, Lexmark vice president and president of its Printing Solutions and Services Division. "Lexmark's approach 'Print Less, Save More' is well received by large international organizations that want to reduce paper waste, improve the efficiency of their document processes and reduce costs."

— WebWireID107302 —

Business Announcements

Computer Peripherals

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Unisys services, software solutions and servers extend capabilities of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft Windows 7, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 throughout clients' enterprises

Berlin – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced at the Microsoft TechEd Europe conference that it is providing multiple services-based solutions for the new Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environments.

The solutions include data center transformation solutions whose value is demonstrated by Unisys proof-point tests, as well as end-user services and a unified communications service that Unisys is hosting for Microsoft Corp.

'When Microsoft delivers software innovations, Unisys is there with innovative solutions that help clients realize the full value of the products,' said Colin Lacey, vice president, Systems and Storage, Unisys. 'We're doing that again for these latest Microsoft offerings to help users improve their operations and make their people better able to do business anywhere at any time.'

These Unisys solutions are designed to help enterprises boost information workers' productivity no matter where they are or how they work, improve the IT infrastructure so it supports business more efficiently, and reduce the costs of IT service delivery and support.

'Unisys deep understanding of both data centers and end-user experiences adds an extra dimension that helps Microsoft customers realize new efficiencies in computing across the enterprise,' said Betsy Frost, general manager, UC Marketing Management at Microsoft Corp. 'We are impressed at the range and depth of solutions that Unisys is offering to support Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.'

Tests Show that Unisys Data Center Transformation Solutions Boost Windows Server 2008 R2

Unisys builds on expertise and best practices in virtualized infrastructure – especially through Unisys Data Center Transformation Services, Infrastructure Management Suite of solutions, and family of Enterprise Servers – to help clients use Windows Server 2008 R2 to transform their data centers for greater efficiency at lower cost.

Unisys recently conducted proof-point tests that demonstrate the power of Windows Server 2008 R2 in a virtualized environment.

In the first test, Unisys demonstrated that the Unisys ES7000 Model 7600R Enterprise Server provides a powerful platform for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 database consolidation.

Using Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition, a single Unisys ES7000 server supported the same workload as 32 dual-socket quad-core commodity servers, each running two 85-gigabyte SQL Server 2008 R2 databases, while providing better response times.

Unisys achieved those results while quadrupling the utilization rate of the commodity servers and using 55 percent less power. The 32:1 consolidation ratio shows that Unisys can help clients configure and manage their SQL Server database infrastructure more efficiently and significantly reduce their facilities, server maintenance and support costs.

In the second proof-point test, Unisys demonstrated high availability for virtualized SQL Server 2008 R2 workloads delivered through the new Live Migration capability of Microsoft Hyper-V.

In the past, clients' inability to move virtual machines (VMs) from one host to another without any perceived downtime or service interruption – a capability especially important in large-scale clustered SQL Server environments – has been a key barrier to virtualizing SQL Server workloads with Hyper-V. Unisys solved this challenge with the Hyper-V Live Migration capability.

Unisys migrated 12 VMs, with each running two 85-gigabyte databases in a single instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 with 20 concurrent users, between two nodes of an ES7000 Model 7600R clustered server. During the Live Migration process, users experienced virtually no loss of performance or interruption of service.

A third test supported the Unisys decision framework that helps clients make the right virtualization choices for their environment. Unisys demonstrated the significant performance and total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) advantages delivered by Hyper-V. The proof-point test revealed that a 12-socket Unisys ES7000 Model 7600R can support 384 VMs – the maximum currently supported under Windows Server 2008 R2 – with a three-year TCO per VM of $578. In contrast, a two-socket server using the latest generation of Intel processors could support only 16 VMs at a far higher three-year TCO per VM of $2,035.

End-User Services Extend Benefits of Exchange Server 2010 and Windows 7

Unisys End-User Productivity Services enable IT organizations to realize the full business potential of Exchange Server 2010 and Windows 7. These services provide multiple options for end users to securely access key productivity environments – whether running centrally managed applications locally on mobile devices such as netbooks and smartphones, accessing them through cloud-based services or using a mixture of delivery options.

For example, users of Exchange Server 2010 can benefit from UnisysUnified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), which delivers Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and Microsoft Office Communicator applications in a multi-tenant environment through Unisys Secure Cloud Solution.

In addition, Unisys provides migration and management support for Windows 7 to help clients deploy the new environment most efficiently and effectively. Also, the advanced desktop management, support and flexible applications delivery capabilities of Unisys End-User Productivity Services give Windows 7 users anywhere, anytime access to their critical productivity environments.

Unified Communications Solutions Help End-Users Explore the Possibilities

Based on Unisys expertise in managed services, Microsoft has selected Unisys to build and manage the Microsoft Unified Communications Virtual Experience for Exchange Server 2010 and Office Communications Server 2007 R2. This cloud-based trial service enables enterprise users to try, free of charge, the latest Microsoft UC technology.

The service gives organizations worldwide the opportunity to test key new features of the Microsoft offerings, such as multi-party instant messaging and voice and video conferencing, and evaluate the potential benefits of Microsoft unified communications for their business. It also helps them assess how they can help employees collaborate more productively using the devices and technologies that best suit their work styles – whether PCs, web browsers or mobile phones.

Organizations interested in participating in a 60-day virtual experience should visit http://www.microsoft.com/uc/en/us/try-it.aspx.
About Unisys

Unisys is a worldwide information technology company.

New York - Ten years after its Initial Public Offering, UPS (NYSE:UPS) marked the anniversary today as its chief executive officer returned to the Big Apple to ring the opening bell for the New York Stock Exchange.

Chairman and CEO Scott Davis was joined by members of the UPS Board of Directors and senior executives in launching the trading day on Friday. Davis is the 10th chairman and CEO in UPS's 102-year history but only the third to spend time guiding the affairs of a "public" UPS.

UPS, founded as a Seattle messenger service in 1907 by a 19-year-old named Jim Casey, was owned privately by employees, retirees and various foundations until Nov. 10, 1999. On that day, UPS issued 109.4 million Class B shares representing 10 percent of the company's outstanding shares at an IPO price of $50 per share.

At the time, the $5.47 billion raised on that day was the largest domestic IPO ever.

Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Automates Data and System Protection, Speeds Recovery of Entire Systems

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the availability of Backup Exec System Recovery 2010, a complete data and system backup and recovery solution for small businesses. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 automates the backup process of an entire system or individual files and folders without disrupting user productivity, and enables quick restores to the same or dissimilar hardware, virtual machines or remote locations. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 introduces new support of the latest Microsoft operating systems, including Windows 7, Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, easing the transition to the new platforms and ensuring continued protection during migration. With the new release, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery will also support Linux operating systems later this year.

'Today's small businesses need the peace of mind that only comes with a cost-effective, reliable backup and recovery solution that will protect their information and systems to minimize downtime and avoid disaster,' said Pat Hanavan, vice president, Symantec Information Management Group. 'Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 provides small businesses with affordable protection so they can easily recover what they need, when they need it and to whatever physical or virtual environment they want.'

For small businesses, backup and recovery is both a challenge and a concern. According to a recent survey¹ of 1,650 small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and their customers, there is a large discrepancy between how SMBs perceive their disaster readiness and their actual level of preparedness. According to the survey, SMBs noted they were confident in their level of disaster preparedness (84 percent), but their practices reveal that this confidence is unwarranted.

The average SMB has experienced three outages within the past 12 months, with the leading causes being virus or hacker attacks, power outages or natural disasters. This is alarming as almost half report they do not yet have a plan to deal with such disruptions. While most companies deploy some form of backup, only one in five (23 percent) back up on a daily basis and 40 percent back up monthly or less. The survey also demonstrates small businesses that lose data due to disaster also lose sales and customers.

Backup Exec System Recovery provides small businesses with a single, easy-to-use solution for backup and recovery. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 now includes Symantec's patent-pending Granular Recovery Option, previously optional. This capability allows small businesses to back up an entire file server, desktop, laptop, virtual server or critical application server, such as Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft SharePoint, and then restore granular items such as individual Exchange emails, SharePoint documents or individual files in minutes. Backups can be saved to a variety of disk storage devices and can be copied to an off-site location or secondary disk device for disaster recovery purposes.

In addition, Backup Exec System Recovery adds new support for the latest virtual environments, including VMware vSphere 4.0, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, and Citrix XenServer 5.x. This new support ensures that the more technical small businesses that integrate virtualization into their IT environments can convert physical systems to virtual machines through Backup Exec System Recovery for disaster recovery or testing purposes.

Organizations can easily manage their backup environment at local and remote locations from a single, centralized console with Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution, available with Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 at no additional charge. Channel partners can benefit from this feature as it provides them with complete remote control over their customers' backup environments through a VPN connection, allowing them to create, edit and distribute backup jobs, policies, installation packages, upgrade packages and client settings and enables remote recovery of volumes and/or complete systems. In addition, the Backup Exec System Recovery product line includes editions that backup and recover Microsoft Windows Servers, Microsoft Windows Small Business Servers as well as desktops and laptops.

Click to Tweet: @Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 provides backup and recovery for small businesses across Windows and Linux

Supporting Quotes

'Small businesses today have to do more with less and are looking for simple, affordable solutions like Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to handle their IT backup and recovery needs,' said Gene Bumgardner, Director of Technical Services, OFM Computer Systems, Inc. 'Symantec's innovative approach to backup and recovery gives us the opportunity to help our small business customers protect and manage their information and systems while allowing us to grow our business and improve services revenue.'

'As a small business and an IT consulting company, we rely on Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to protect and manage our information and systems, as well as our clients' systems,' said Andrew Chic, systems administrator, Prophet Business Group Ltd. 'We are confident that in the event of a disaster or outage, Symantec will recover our information or complete systems within minutes so there is no disruption to our business.'

Availability and Pricing

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 is available now for a suggested price of $795 USD per server and $69 USD per desktop.
