MUNICH, Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, today announced it is providing additional support for the nonprofit work of the Crisis Intervention Team Munich (Krisen-Interventions-Team: KIT) by making another generous donation, this time totaling more than €58,000 (US$86,600). Back in October 2008, the Company donated €78,000 (US$99,800) to KIT.

KIT Munich is a project being run by the Worker's Samaritan Federation (ASB), Munich/Upper Bavaria chapter, in which specially qualified voluntary emergency rescuers help, advise and support people immediately after serious incidents. The project is mainly financed by donations and funds from the ASB. Support for KIT Munich has originated out of Qualcomm's Munich office, once again underlining Qualcomm's worldwide commitment to social responsibility.

'The previous donation by Qualcomm last year marked the inception of the KITz project, an initiative aimed at children. What's more, we were able to make long overdue investments, among them a new uniform and repairs to our emergency vehicle,' says Peter Zehentner, head of KIT Munich. 'The renewed support from Qualcomm has enabled us to finally buy a new emergency vehicle so that we are always ready to go into action. The donation also ensures that KITz can continue to provide special support and advice for children who need uncomplicated help after traumatic events, as well as for their parents and guardians.'

'At Qualcomm, we believe that by supporting worthwhile local organizations such as KIT we can have a major impact on their success,' says Thomas Nindl, business development director at Qualcomm Germany. 'As an honorary employee of the ASB, I know the organisation very well. They have done an exceptional job meeting the needs of children suffering from extreme shock and traumas.'

Qualcomm's dedication to being a socially responsible company reaches beyond company borders. Among other achievements, it has been named among FORTUNE magazine's lists of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America and Most Admired Companies for 10 years in a row.

— WebWireID108245 —

Business Announcements

Not for profit

Telecommunications

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

BT's online donation platform set to reach £100 million milestone at BBC Children in Need

This year for the first time BT's charity online giving platform, the eDonate platform, will be used by all call centres to record and process pledges made in support of BBC Children in Need via the donation line - 0345 733 2233. Since it was launched in 2002 the eDonate platform has processed donations approaching £100 million which has been banked by charities supported by BT. Donations made to BBC Children in Need 2009 will take the figure past the £100 million milestone.

In total 5,000 volunteers will man 52 call centres across the UK handling pledges made to the donation line. The eDonate platform can handle 500 transactions a second and 24,000 people can simultaneously input. As call centre volunteers input donation pledges directly into BT's eDonate platform, it removes the reliance on paperwork and speeds up the time it takes for pledges to be recorded and processed allowing the charity to access to the money quicker; it is also a more secure process.

Last year participating call centres handled more than 200,000 calls on the night and a record-breaking £20.8 million was pledged to positively change the lives of children and young people who have suffered hardships, difficulties or disadvantages of some kind.

BT has supported BBC Children in Need since the first telethon in 1980 and continues to provide support including; telephony, network management, call centres, volunteers and online support. Another exciting development for BT this year will see the LED display at the BT Tower in London used to profile the BBC Children in Need appeal with an animation of Pudsey Bear and the donation line number - 0345 733 2233.

Beth Courtier, community investment programme manager, said: 'BT's support is an essential and integral part of the appeal. The show is live and BBC Children in Need relies on the BT infrastructure and its people to deliver on the night. This year with donations from the public being directly input to BT's eDonate platform it will enhance the service we provide. BT supports charity telethons because this is where we can use our expertise to help make a difference to those in need. With BT's help,

BBC Children in Need is hoping to break the half a billion pound mark of the total funds raised since it began. This will be a milestone we can all be proud of.'

As with every telethon, BT employees are encouraged to have fun and raise funds. Research shows that 98 per cent of BT employees believe it is important that BT supports telethon events; 87 per cent felt more positive about BT as a result of the company's support for charity telethon appeals.

This years' BBC Children in Need appeal will be aired on the 20th of November. Cast members from EastEnders will be handling some calls from BT Tower and a host of other stars have pledged their support or committed to perform in aid of Children in Need including Pixie Lott, Paulo Nutini, Cheryl Cole, Westlife, Annie Lennox and Harry Connick Jnr. Everyone involved will help to raise money for BBC Children in Need, which works to help disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

— WebWireID107991 —

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

Publishing / Information Services

Telecommunications

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Mayor Recognizes Conservancy Workers for Emergency Response to Devastating Storm

New York, N.Y - Today, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, together with Central Park Conservancy President Douglas Blonsky and Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe announced a $1 million donation from Chase to the Conservancy to restore and replant areas of Central Park that were devastated by an unusually severe storm on August 18, 2009. The Mayor recognized the efforts of several Conservancy workers who worked tirelessly after the storm to secure and remove damaged trees and reopen the very damaged northern third of Central Park. Also on hand was Thomas L. Kempner, Jr., Chairman of the Central Park Conservancy's Board of Trustees.

At the Great Hill - one of the areas most damaged by the August storm - Mayor Bloomberg, Mr. Dimon, Mr. Blonsky and Commissioner Benepe planted a 12 foot-tall sapling to kick-off the restoration process, funded largely by Chase's donation. Thirty local students from Thurgood Marshall Academy and the Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem took part, and planted flagged stakes in spots on the Hill where trees were lost.

"The August thunderstorm ripped through the city, causing some of the most extensive damage to Central Park in modern memory," said Mayor Bloomberg. "During the three weeks that followed the storm, Central Park Conservancy and Parks Department staff and volunteers worked around the clock to clear the debris. Their dedicated work and this generous gift from Chase will allow us to complete almost all of the post-storm restoration projects that we still have left to do in Central Park."

"New York City is the heart of our operations, and Central Park is the heart of New York," said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon. "JPMorgan Chase has been a steadfast supporter of the Park for decades. There was no question; we knew we needed to move quickly to restore a place that is such an integral part of New Yorkers' lives."

"The Park is more than 843 acres of historic landscapes, trees and water bodies - it's a part of the fabric of this city and our lives," said Doug Blonsky, Conservancy President. "When thousands of Park friends saw the storm's destruction, they were moved to help. So was Chase, a generous longtime supporter of the Park. With Chase's help, we will create new landscapes that generations of Park patrons will cherish as much as the ones we lost."

"In the space of half an hour on the night of August 18, a freak blast of wind devastated thousands of trees in New York City, knocking down over 500 in Central Park alone. For a while, the north end of Central Park looked like a logging camp," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Thanks to the hard work of the Central Park Conservancy, the road to restoration is well underway but much needs to be done to replant the damaged areas while taking this opportunity to increase plant diversity, encourage wildlife and improve the park's vistas. The City is especially grateful to J.P. Morgan Chase for their extraordinarily generous donation toward this effort."

The severe storm that tore through parts of Manhattan the evening of August 18, 2009 destroyed more than 500 trees in Central Park -some of them older than the Park itself. One thousand more trees were damaged, and landscapes were devastated. Especially in the 275-acre northern end of the Park, downed trees and limbs knocked over light poles, tore through fences and destabilized soil. Conservancy crews swung into action immediately, assessing the damage and beginning the arduous process of carefully cutting down, stacking and chipping damaged trees. In the first three weeks after the storm, the round-the-clock efforts of 26 tree crews dealt with a majority of the damage. A staggering 90 metric tons of wood chips were processed in that time.

Chase's $1 million contribution, the largest of any single donor giving to the restoration process, will restore lost landscapes and plant new trees throughout the Park, especially in the areas of the Great Hill and the Ravine, two areas most profoundly affected by the storm. The bank has a rich history of supporting Central Park and activities in the park, dating back to the first Corporate Challenge race held at the Park in 1977, and began its support for the Central Park Conservancy within the first year of the organization's formation. Today, Chase supports public cultural, educational, and environmental programs in the Park such as the Harlem Meer Performance Festival, the Urban Horticulture & Ecology Training Program, Camp Central Park and the Catch & Release Fishing Program.

Chase, through JPMorgan Chase and its Foundation, has given over $100 million in financial support to non-profit organizations every year in the last five years. In New York City, the bank has been a strong philanthropic supporter of affordable housing, foreclosure prevention and financial education efforts, in addition to significant investments in kindergarten through high school public education.

— WebWireID107950 —

Banking / Financial Services

Environment

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

Politics

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

LighterLife has produced a brand new calendar to help raise money for the Prostate Cancer Charity. The calendar features 12 men who have lost weight with LighterLife baring all for the cameras.

These brave men, from various walks of life had a variety of personal reasons for losing weight which ranged from being able to keep up their kids and reducing the risk of bad health, through to wanting to apply to become a fireman. What brought these men together was that they all had the same goal; to lose weight with LighterLife. With their lives changed for the better, they stripped down to not only celebrate their amazing weight loss, but to also raise money and awareness for a charity close to their hearts.

Lee, who posed for the month of January, lost six stone and is now running rings around his young football team. Gary, otherwise known as Mr. February, is six stone lighter and no longer lags behind the rest of his walking group. Lee, or Mr. March, has lost the five stone he put on after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Mark, who can be seen in the calendar in April, has a new lease on life and can keep up with his kids after losing four stone. Mike, or Mr. May, is no longer clinically obese and since losing just under three stone, is a faster and more confident water polo player. Five stone lighter, Nuno, or Mr. June, now has the confidence and the BMI to apply for his dream job as a fireman.

Former yo-yo dieter Phil, who posed for July, lost three stone which has given him the confidence to do what he loves - DJ'ing.

An Airbus A380 arriving for the Dubai Airshow will carry with it eight tonnes of humanitarian aid. The delivery, facilitated by the Airbus Corporate Foundation, a non-commercial arm of the leading aircraft manufacturer, and its partners, will boost crucial stocks at Action Against Hunger's hub in the emirate – strategically located to serve a global effort.

Founded in France in 1979, Action Against Hunger is recognised as one of the most important humanitarian organisations combating hunger and malnutrition worldwide. It is an issue that affects approximately one billion people across the globe, with most lacking access to clean water leading to disease and malnutrition, and remains the largest single contributor to child mortality. Today's delivery of water purification equipment, more than 50 cubic metres, the equivalent of two 20' standard sea freight containers, to the non-governmental organisation's (NGO) Dubai base is central to its efforts.

Tom Enders, Head of the Airbus Corporate Foundation and President and CEO of Airbus, said: 'Thanks to all our partners, the Airbus Corporate Foundation has been able to support Action Against Hunger by transporting vital emergency sanitation equipment to one of the key storage hubs. This is a great example of how aviation, being a key enabler of global economic and social development and an essential resource for humanitarian efforts, can help in a very tangible way. We hope this to be the start of a long-term partnership between both our organisations.'

Action Against Hunger is increasing stocks at its Dubai base to capitalise on the emirate's strategic location from which to serve a coordinated global effort in response to emergency situations elsewhere in the world. The non-profit, non-religious organisation has established an international network to deliver life-saving programmes in some 45 countries, specialising in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster and chronic food insecurity. A primary concern of these projects is to facilitate the provision of – and access to – safe water through programmes that currently reach four million people each year.

Erland Egiziano, Logistics Director Action Against Hunger, said: 'More than one billion people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. These issues are the root cause of many infections that lead to sickness and ultimately malnutrition and are responsible for 2.2 million preventable deaths each year – mostly among children. In our efforts to eliminate hunger, clean water is as essential as food. The equipment being delivered today by the Airbus Corporate Foundation is vital in restoring dignity, self-sufficiency and independence for vulnerable communities and saving the lives of children and their families throughout the world.'

The Airbus Corporate Foundation was established in December 2008 to support humanitarian causes through good will flights, youth development in the communities in which it operates, and environmental issues in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

— WebWireID107789 —

Airlines / Aviation

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Weber Shandwick Social Impact Survey Finds 88 Percent of Nonprofits Experimenting with Social Media While Struggling to Demonstrate its Value to their Organizations

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The vast majority of nonprofit organizations (88%) are experimenting with social media to engage key audiences, but a significant majority (79%) are uncertain of how to demonstrate social media's value for their organizations. Only half (51%) report active use of social media. The results are contained in a new survey by Weber Shandwick's Social Impact team conducted with KRC Research. The research was conducted among 200 nonprofit and foundation executive directors and senior communications officials in July - August 2009.

The survey findings were released today on the new Weber Shandwick Social Impact blog, impact.webershandwick.com.

'We know from our work with nonprofits that most realize the potential of social media and are experimenting with it, but many are not maximizing the full opportunity,' said Paul Massey, Social Impact co-lead. 'This survey validates that there is widespread experimentation, and suggests that, in the future, nonprofits that fully participate in the two-way conversations that make this medium so powerful will reap the greatest benefit.'

Social Media Contributes to Success
The survey found that the vast majority of nonprofit and foundation professionals believe their online presence helps raise awareness (92%), keeps external audiences engaged (86%) and reduces costs relative to traditional media (77%). In addition, social media is seen as successful in helping nonprofits reach broad external audiences (67%). Sixty-one percent say the rewards outweigh the risks. For these reasons, the vast majority (85%) intends to make greater use of social media in the next two years and most (78%) will require additional and deeper social media expertise to keep communicating and garnering support for their work.

Demonstrating Value of Social Media is Among Challenges
Despite predominantly positive perceptions about social media among nonprofits and foundations, several challenges were underscored in the survey. Two-thirds of the nonprofit executives surveyed (67%) believe that traditional media – including coverage in newspapers, magazines, television and radio – are more effective at supporting fundraising efforts than social media (67% vs. 22%). As important, executives in the nonprofit world are more skeptical about social media's ability to help them connect with hard-to-reach audiences such as donors (45%), media (39%) and policy makers (31%).

'While two-thirds of nonprofit executives believe social media has a positive impact on their communications with external audiences, they are less convinced about social media's resonance with donors, journalists and policy makers,' said Social Impact co-lead Stephanie Bluma. 'What these results imply is that organizations need to develop more targeted and sustainable digital connections with these critical yet narrower audiences. In the months ahead, digital engagement strategies will need to show value on multiple fronts from brand-building to advocacy to fundraising.'

Notably, the single area where social media is widely believed to be more impactful than traditional media is in mobilizing supporters and advocates (58%), a critically important audience for nonprofits. Yet, despite this firmly-held belief, and the additional survey finding that most nonprofit executives (84%) see the value of social media in connecting with advocates on their behalf, an equally large segment (83%) recognized that social media also makes it easier for advocates to organize independently of nonprofits – a cautionary note for nonprofit executives.

What's Ahead for Nonprofits & Social Media
With nearly 70% of nonprofit professionals projecting their 2010 communications budgets to remain the same or decrease compared to last year, finding the resources and expertise to implement social media strategies is a widely shared challenge. Fifty-two percent of organizations concede they do not have enough staff to manage their current social media outreach and almost two-thirds (64%) report that their organizations do not have social media policies and guidelines in place for employees and board members to engage appropriately online.

Other Key Survey Findings:

    * Organizations with annual operating budgets of $25 million or more are more likely to say social media positively impacts their communications with all audiences and that they are good at social media.
* Large and small nonprofits alike believe social media are least likely to assist their outreach to policymakers and donors compared to external audiences.

Methodology
KRC Research, research partner to Weber Shandwick Social Impact, surveyed 200 nonprofit and foundation executive directors and communications officials via phone between July 29 and August 17, 2009. The margin of error is +/- 6.9 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.

About KRC Research
KRC Research is a full-service market research firm that specializes in the kind of research needed for effective communications—communications that reach, engage and persuade.

Target-Sponsored Survey Uncovers 92 Percent of Veterans Report Serving Their Community is Important to Them

MINNEAPOLIS - Target today announces its partnership with VolunteerMatch to help connect military veterans, active military, and their families with community and civic service opportunities across the country. The partnership is an immediate response to a report based on the first ever nationally representative survey of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan which found that these men and women have a strong desire to serve their country on the home front through community service and volunteer work. The report entitled, 'All Volunteer Force: From Military to Civilian Service,' was written by Civic Enterprises and underwritten by Target and the Case Foundation.

The report highlighted that only 13 percent of veterans strongly agreed their transitions home from deployment were going well. However, those veterans who had participated in service opportunities since arriving home had smoother transitions than those who had not. Given the pressing need to help ease veterans' re-entry into the community, Target and VolunteerMatch have taken immediate action on the report results to make it easier for veterans to find service opportunities, for citizens to support the military through community service, and for service organizations to more effectively recruit volunteers in local communities. Available now, military families, veterans and supporters can visit www.VolunteerMatch.org to help connect with service organizations that are available nationwide.
The VolunteerMatch home page features a link to its Advanced Search page where 'Military Families & Veterans' has been added as a new Interest Area – making it easy for visitors to find military-related volunteer offerings.

'At Target, we have a profound connection to this survey, as we are proud to count many veterans and military reservists among our 350,000 team members. I can't think of a better way to show our continued support to veterans and active soldiers serving in our Armed Forces than to listen and swiftly respond to their needs,' said Laysha Ward, president, community relations, Target. 'This online resource provides an easy way for veterans to find meaningful volunteer and service opportunities and make connections in their local community.'

'Military service and community service are both strong in our nation, and volunteering at local organizations is a great way for these traditions to come together to strengthen local communities.' said Greg Baldwin, president, VolunteerMatch. 'We are happy to work with Target to salute the men and women who defend our nation and help ease their transition home.'

Target helps to support veterans in many ways throughout the year, and to further showcase its continued commitment this Veterans Day, Target is a sponsor of ServiceNation's MISSION SERVE care package assembly at George Washington University. In partnership with ServiceNation, the military family organization Blue Star Families, event participants and GWU students, the volunteers will create more than 500 'Thx Box' care packages for military families during the event's service project. The care packages will include a reusable Target bag, games, spa items, photo albums, playing cards, DVDs and more. The event is sponsored by Target, Blue Star Families and the forthcoming PBS documentary, 'This Emotional Life.'

Target currently has thousands of team member veterans, as well as many active duty personnel and countless team members who have a family member currently serving in the military. To help provide ongoing support and resources for any Target team member soldier and/or family member connected to the United States military – before, during and after deployment – Target developed the Military Service Network (MSN). MSN is an onboarding social network that serves as a resource conduit for Target team members, which offers service opportunities, support groups and educational presentations.

And because Target understands the difficulty and importance of communicating with family members who are deployed as part of the military, Target Technology Services (TTS) has created a solution that allows team members to communicate with deployed family members using Microsoft Communicator, Target's standard instant messaging (IM) software. The Military IM program is open to any team member with a Target computer who has a family member deployed with one of the armed services.

'As a Target team member the past thirteen years and active member of the military for twenty-four years, Target has provided me, my team member counterparts, and our families with every opportunity to stay connected, help ease our transition home from deployment, as well as provide ample ways for us to get involved and volunteer,' said Bill Lieder, Target team member and active member of the Army National Guard. 'There are thousands of military men and women throughout the nation that have a passionate desire to serve and continue their dedication to their country, and it's our duty to help them do just that.'

For years, Target has donated funds and volunteer hours to local and national veterans' and military organizations that align with the company's core areas of giving – education, arts and social services, which includes:

    * Voice of Democracy: Target is the national sponsor of the $3 million scholarship competition in which students write and record a broadcast script based on a patriotic theme. Local VFWs gather volunteers to judge the competition, which culminates in a Target-sponsored trip to Washington, DC for the state finalists.

    * United Through Reading Military Program: With Target's support, the United Through Reading Military Program now reaches all branches of the military, helping parents and children stay connected while separated during long deployments through the medium for reading aloud on DVD.

    * Our Military Kids: Target provides support through grants and education scholarships, as well as pro bono efforts, for Our Military Kids, which provides support to the children of deployed and severely injured National Guard and Military Reserve personnel.

    * Operation Gratitude: Volunteers from Target stores and distribution centers participate annually in the Patriotic Drive to assemble care packages for troops overseas.

    * American Legion: Last month, Target and the American Legion joined forces to raise more than $100,000 for care packages to send to the Army service members of Bravo Troop 3-61 Cavalry, who lost all their possessions when their base camp in Afghanistan was attacked and later destroyed.

Since 1946, Target has given 5 percent of its income to support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism. Today that's more than $3 million every week.

About Target
Minneapolis-based Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) serves guests at 1,743 stores in 49 states nationwide and at Target.com. Target is committed to providing a fun and convenient shopping experience with access to unique and highly differentiated products at affordable prices. Since 1946, the corporation has given 5 percent of its income through community grants and programs like Take Charge of Education. Today, that giving equals more than $3 million a week.

About VolunteerMatch
VolunteerMatch is a national nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities by helping good people and good causes to connect.

This Veterans Day, November 11th, a collaboration of local organizations will unite to honor roughly 20,000 veterans and their families at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (ALNC). With volunteers estimated in the hundreds, every grave-site will be decorated with a bouquet of flowers in admiration of the sacrifices made by the members of our Armed Forces.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and the 200th birthday of America's 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. In honor of this, Flowers for Heroes has teamed up other organizations including the Illinois Motorcycle Freedom Run to make this Veterans Day something to remember.

A special Gold Star Family hour will take place at 8:00am where the families of those buried at ALNC will be presented special bouquets they can place on the resting place of their loved ones. Following the placing of the bouquets, there will be a special Veterans Day Ceremony featuring an aircraft fly-over and special guests including IL Gov. Pat Quinn.

The success of this event rests in the hands of the people and businesses in our community.

Lloyd's Community Programme approaches the end its 20th anniversary year with awards and success stories as it hosted the City Business Traineeship Awards in the famous Lloyd's building last night.

The awards celebrate the City of London's City Business Traineeship programme, an initiative supported by Lloyd's Community Programme and the London market as well as other City businesses, which places A-Level leavers from surrounding City boroughs in paid summer work placements.

The Lloyd's market welcomed 21 students across 15 companies working in financial services, business administration, legal and IT departments.

Illya Karpenkom, who was placed at Antares Underwriting, won Highly Commended Trainee of the Year award and his placement has been extended for a further six months.

'The work placement at Antares left me with no doubt as to my future career – I know I definitely want to become an underwriter. I am thrilled to be offered a further six months and can't wait to get started.'

Gill Nicholls from Liberty Syndicate is Lloyd's Community Programme's longest serving volunteer and received the Project Champion of the Year Award.

Lord Levene, Lloyd's Chairman, welcomed guests to the awards and said:

'Feedback from the Lloyd's market has been very positive about the work that the students have done and I hope that this traineeship has given them a taste of a different world and opened up new horizons.

'Lloyd's Community Programme does tremendous work that wouldn't be possible without the commitment from its volunteers and I'm delighted to say that we have reached our target for this year of 1,000 helpers from the market.'

Lloyd's Community Programme successfully reached its target of 1,000 volunteers after a year packed with activities and events.

Numerous events have been hosted in celebration of its 20 years. A Lloyd's Games Day was held in June for over 500 students from Tower Hamlets schools as well as a Cricket Cup and Football Cup. Twenty one internships for local students were provided and, at a celebratory event in July, HRH the Prince of Wales congratulated Lloyd's Community Programme for all its work.

Notes to editors

1. Lloyd's Community Programme gives people working at Lloyd's and in the Lloyd's market the opportunity to 'put something back' into the community on their doorstep through volunteering. It is run by a management board of senior representatives from companies in the market and supported by the Community Affairs team at Lloyd's and involves over 60 companies in the Lloyd's market.

2. Lloyd's is very keen to support young talent in the market, participating in several market wide programmes, such as the National Skills Academy for Financial Services in Tower Hamlets College programme, which places local graduates in six-week placements in the Lloyd's Corporation and the market, as well as Lloyd's own graduate programme, which saw its first intake in September 2008.

3.

London, UK - GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announced that it has signed an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to donate 50 million doses of its adjuvanted pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine to WHO for distribution to developing countries most in need. GSK is working with WHO and health authorities to prepare for initial shipments of the vaccine to developing countries by the end of November.

'GSK is committed to supporting governments and health authorities around the world in their efforts to protect their populations against this pandemic. Our commitment recognises the needs of developing countries, and this donation of 50 million doses will enable vaccination to begin soon in some of the world's poorest countries.' said Andrew Witty, CEO, GlaxoSmithKline.

"We welcome this very generous donation by GlaxoSmithKline, which will go to protect the health of the world's poorest people. This is a real gesture of global solidarity towards those who would not be otherwise able to have access to the vaccine," said Dr. Margaret Chan, Director–General, WHO. "WHO will now work to see that these vaccines are distributed to those who need them."

In addition to this agreement on vaccines, GSK continues to have discussions with WHO about a donation of its antiviral medicine, Relenza. A tiered-pricing policy based on World Bank classification of countries is also in effect for this antiviral medicine, and the company is making Relenza Rotacaps and Diskhaler available at not-for-profit prices to the world's 50 least developed countries.

GSK is committed to facilitating equitable access to all these interventions to all countries. The company strongly endorses the principles set out by the Gates Foundation to help guide global allocation of pandemic vaccines and reiterates that the global community should take all steps necessary to protect all populations, including those without resources to protect themselves.

GlaxoSmithKline – one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies – is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

Despite progress, societies continue to fail women at key times

GENEVA -- Despite considerable progress in the past decades, societies continue to fail to meet the health care needs of women at key moments of their lives, particularly in their adolescent years and in older age, a WHO report has found.

Launching the report, entitled Women and health: today's evidence tomorrow's agenda, WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan called for urgent action both within the health sector and beyond to improve the health and lives of girls and women around the world, from birth to older age.

"If women are denied a chance to develop their full human potential, including their potential to lead healthier and at least somewhat happier lives, is society as a whole really healthy? What does this say about the state of social progress in the 21st century?" asked Dr Chan.
Women provide the bulk of health care, but rarely receive the care they need

Worldwide, women provide the bulk of health care - whether in the home, the community or the health system, yet health care continues to fail to address the specific needs and challenges of women throughout their lives.

Up to 80% of all health care and 90% of care for HIV/AIDS-related illness is provided in the home - almost always by women. Yet more often than not, they go unsupported, unrecognized and unremunerated in this essential role.

When it comes to meeting women's health care needs, some services, such as care during pregnancy, are more likely to be in place than others such as mental health, sexual violence and screening and treatment for cervical cancer.

However, in many countries, sexual and reproductive health services tend to focus exclusively on married women and ignore the needs of unmarried women and adolescents. Few services cater for other marginalized groups of women such as sex workers, intravenous drug users, ethnic minorities and rural women.

"It's time to pay girls and women back, to make sure that they get the care and support they need to enjoy a fundamental human right at every moment of their lives, that is their right to health," said Dr Chan.
Women live longer than men but these extra years are not always healthy

HIV, pregnancy-related conditions and tuberculosis continue to be major killers of women aged 15 to 45 globally. However, as women age, noncommunicable diseases become major causes of death and disability, particularly after the age of 45 years.

Globally, heart attacks and stroke, often thought to be "male" problems, are the two leading killers of women. Women often show different symptoms from men, which contributes to under diagnosis of heart disease in women. They also tend to develop heart disease later in life than men.

Because women tend to live on average six to eight years longer than men, they represent a growing proportion of all older people. Societies need to prepare now to deal with the health problems and costs associated with older age and anticipate the major social changes in the organization of work, family and social support.
Despite some biological advantages, women's health suffers from their lower socio-economic status

Lack of access to education, decision-making positions and income may limit women's ability to protect their own health and that of their families. Though major differences exist in women's health across regions, countries and socio-economic class, women and girls face similar challenges, in particular discrimination, violence and poverty, which increase their risk of ill-health.

For example, in the case of HIV/AIDS the risk posed by a biological difference is compounded in cultures that limit women's knowledge about HIV and their ability to negotiate safer sex.

"We will not see significant progress as long as women are regarded as second-class citizens in so many parts of the world," Dr Chan said. "In so many societies, men exercise political, social and economic control. The health sector has to be concerned. These unequal power relations translate into unequal access to health care and unequal control over health resources," she added.
Policy change and action is needed within the health sector and beyond

The report seeks to identify key areas for reform, both within and outside the health sector. These include identifying mechanisms to build strong leadership with the full participation of women's organizations, strengthening health systems to better meet women's needs throughout their lives, leveraging changes in public policy to address how social and economic determinants of health adversely impact women, and building a knowledge base that would allow a better tracking of progress.

Strategies to improve women's health must also take full account of gender inequality and address the specific socioeconomic and cultural barriers that prevent women from protecting and improving their health, the report points out.

— WebWireID107284 —

Government

Health Care / Hospitals

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

Politics

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

WASHINGTON -- NASA is accepting applications from students at U.S. colleges and universities who want to send their experiments to the edge of space on a high-flying scientific balloon.

The annual NASA project provides near space access for 12 undergraduate and graduate student experiments to be carried by a NASA high-altitude research balloon. The flights typically last 15 to 20 hours and reach an altitude of 23 miles. Experiments may include compact satellites or prototypes.

The experiments are flown aboard the High Altitude Student Platform, or HASP, a balloon-born instrument stack launched from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility's remote site in Fort Sumner, N.M. The goals of the project are to provide a space test platform to encourage student research and stimulate the development of student satellite payloads and other space-engineering products.

HASP seeks to enhance the technical skills and research abilities of students in critical science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. The project is a joint effort between NASA and the Louisiana Space Grant Consortium.

NASA's HASP houses and provides power, mechanical support and communications for test articles and instruments. It can support approximately 200 pounds of student payloads. Since 2006, the HASP program has selected 44 payloads for flight, the work of more than 200 students from across the United States.

A question-and-answer teleconference for interested parties will be held Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. EST. The deadline for applications is Dec. 18. NASA is targeting fall 2010 for the next flight opportunity. NASA expects to make selections in January 2010.

National-lottery.com, the independent home of lottery and lotto results, is currently celebrating 15 years of the hugely popular UK Lotto game.

In the 15 years that Lotto has been played, the National Lottery has paid out more than £32 billion in prize money, creating thousands of new millionaires and multi-millionaires.

The biggest individual Lotto win by a player agreeing to publicity was achieved in July 2004 when Iris Jeffrey landed a staggering 20.1 pounds million. Good Causes have also benefitted from the Lotto and other National Lottery games, with more than £23 billion being raised over the last 15 years.

Whilst the Lotto game has created an army of millionaires since it first began, not everyone who has won a prize has claimed it. UK lottery players have up to 180 days to claim a prize, and if that deadline is missed then the prize is given over to the Good Causes fund.

It would be understandable to think that only minor prizes would go unclaimed (http://www.national-lottery.com/blog/unclaimed-lottery-prizes.asp), but some very substantial Lotto jackpot wins have been unclaimed too. The biggest unclaimed prize so far was worth £9,746,996.

Lotto was the very first National Lottery game to be played in the UK, with the inaugural draw took place on Saturday 19 November, 1994. A Lucky Dip feature was introduced in March 1996 which allowed players to have their numbers generated at random, and today Lucky Dip entries are just as popular as hand-picked entries.

The potential to win life-changing jackpots certainly played a big role in the success of the Lotto, but so did the charitable aspect of the game. 28p of every pound spent on lottery tickets goes to Good Causes, and since the Lotto game started in 1994 more than 325,000 grants have been approved to support a variety of worthwhile projects in every part of the UK.

The immediate success of the Lotto game led to the development and launch of many other National Lottery games including scratchcards, Thunderball , Lotto HotPicks, Daily Play, EuroMillions and Dream Number. Players who feel nostalgic and would like to check the results for the very first lottery games can find a complete archive of results via http://www.national-lottery.com/results.asp.

— WebWireID107154 —

Entertainment

Gambling / Casinos

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

New Design Reflects UPS Safe Driving Program Available to Local Boys & Girls Club Teens

NASCAR driver David Ragan and the UPS (NYSE:UPS) team will have an extra 4.5 million fans cheering them this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway when Ragan gets behind the wheel of his No. 6 Ford Fusion, which will sport a new paint scheme that reflects UPS and Boys & Girls Clubs of America's (BGCA) UPS Road Code safe driving program.

The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, introduced a national program this year in collaboration with BGCA to teach the company's industry-leading safe driving techniques to teens. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, but UPS and its world-renowned drivers are making an effort to change that with the help of BGCA and Ragan.

"UPS drivers are among the safest on the road. The Road Code program gives us the opportunity to use our nationally recognized safe driving training to directly impact a need in our communities and prevent teenage deaths," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "This special paint scheme captures our commitment to driving safety, starting with teens at local Boys & Girls Clubs, and sharing it with UPS NASCAR fans."

The new car design for the Texas race incorporates BGCA's logo, along with handprints from members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas who are participating in the UPS Road Code program. The paint scheme was unveiled in a special trackside event featuring Ragan and these Club teens.

"Our entire race team is excited about the special Boys & Girls Clubs of America design we're running this weekend," said Ragan. "This is definitely a change from the normal look of our UPS car, and it's always fun to give the fans something new to get excited about. This car is certainly going to stand out on track and hopefully help bring some awareness to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the UPS Road Code program."

Ragan became a spokesperson for the UPS Road Code program this season, supporting the program through a series of video and audio public service announcements that are available online and have been broadcast on radio stations nationwide. He's also been visiting some Boys & Girls Clubs near racing cities, speaking to the UPS Road Code teens about the importance of safe driving.

"Safety is a priority for me on and off the track, and being on the road is something that needs to be taken seriously," continued David. "It's easy to get distracted when you're in the car, but you need to be really focused when you're behind the wheel of a vehicle."

"We are extremely grateful to The UPS Foundation for bringing UPS Road Code to our teens, providing access to important safety training utilizing state-of-the-art simulators," said Roxanne Spillett, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. "The paint scheme for David's car is outstanding. It truly captures the essence of our Clubs, our kids, and our dedication to their safety."

Teens, parents, and others interested in learning more about safe driving and UPS Road Code should visit www.ups.com/roadcode. The music is set to poems by Kay Ryan, the current U.S. Poet Laureate. Artistic Director Cynthia Powell will conduct.

''Notes Upon the Breeze' is fresh and inspired, full of subtlety and wit,' said Powell. The choir is now in its sixth season, according to Jennifer Clarke, executive director and founder, and is performing its third commissioned work by a woman composer.

The concert, filled with radiant music that reflects the meditative sentiments of autumn, also features "Songs of the Lights" by Latvian-born Canadian composer Imant Raminsh. Five songs from 'The Princess' by Gustav Holst will be performed by the choir, along with selections from Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", which is recognized for its beauty and musical mastery.

The choir will be joined by the string performers of the Transfiguration Quintet and Taisiya Pushkar on the piano.

Melodia Women's Choir is comprised of 35 talented women singers who are selected through an auditioning process. The choir is described as having a "rich and ringing" sound, and has performed several sold-out concerts, including at Merkin Hall.

Chris Lastovicka's work has been performed at the Boston Early Music Festival, Merce Cunningham Studio, in Spoleto, Italy, by the New York City Opera at its VOX showcase of American Composers, and elsewhere.

The mission of Melodia Women's Choir is to create, explore and perform rarely heard women's choral music and to promote opportunities for women composers and musicians.

Jennifer Clarke, founder, is an arts consultant in New York who has worked with Symphony Space, Dancing in the Streets and the American Music Center. Melodia Conductor Cynthia Powell recently conducted choral scenes for Meredith Monk's Songs of Ascension at BAM. Melodia Women's Choir has been featured on WNBC, Women's Voices for Change and Women's eNews, and has been invited twice to perform at celebrations of Women's History Month of NYC.

Funding for Melodia's commissioning program is provided by the Sorel Charitable Organization and the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation.

For more information see www.melodiawomenschoir.org.
____________________________________________________________________
CONCERT DETAILS

Melodia Women's Choir
'Notes Upon the Breeze'
Saturday, November 14, 2009
8 pm
Saint Peter's Church, Citigroup Center
Lexington Avenue at East 54th Street, New York City
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
Visit www.melodiawomenschoir.org or call 212-252-4134

— WebWireID107136 —

Entertainment

Lifestyle / Society

Media Advisory

Music

Not for profit

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Donated Refrigerator Trucks Expected to Help 35 U.S. Food Banks Provide 41 Million Additional Meals to Families in Need

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Today, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation kicked-off 'Walmart Gives Back,' a holiday giving initiative that will provide $32 million in monetary and in-kind donations to charitable organizations across the U.S. Executives from Feeding America and Meals On Wheels joined Walmart to launch the historic campaign by sending off a convoy of 35 trucks donated by the Walmart Foundation.

Valued at $3 million and loaded with Great Value-branded products and fresh apples, the new refrigerator trucks will arrive at Feeding America food banks in Miami, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Boston, Memphis and 30 other communities in time for Thanksgiving. Feeding America estimates that these refrigerator trucks will enable the food banks to transport up to 52.5 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 41 million additional meals, per year.

'In this economy, families and seniors across the country who rely on food banks have been hit especially hard,' said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. 'As Walmart stores continue to be the price leader on groceries, our partnership with Feeding America is helping us do our part to put more food on the dinner table. Our business and our charitable giving are united in the commitment to eradicate hunger in America.'

The donated refrigerator trucks are the Walmart Foundation's response to a call from food banks that were unable to safely transport nutritious produce, deli meat, beef, chicken, dairy and other nutritious food donated from Walmart stores and other grocers. Since last November, Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations have donated more than 90 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 70 million meals – to Feeding America food banks, exceeding the company's goal and making Walmart Feeding America's largest food donor.

'With more than 90 million pounds of food donated to Feeding America's network of food banks, Walmart is Feeding America's top corporate partner in the fight against hunger,' said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. 'These 35 new refrigerated trucks are critical to the food banks and will make an enormous impact in allowing the safe transport of nutritious food to millions of people in need around the country. No American should go hungry, and we are proud to partner with Walmart and fight to end domestic hunger.'

In addition, the Walmart Foundation announced today a $2.2 million grant to Meals On Wheels Association of America. Through this funding, 140 Meals On Wheels programs across the nation will upgrade or replace delivery vehicles, stoves, refrigerators and freezers. These improvements will help increase the number of meals provided to the one in nine seniors facing the threat of hunger.

'When people think of hunger in the United States the elderly do not come to mind. The reality is, though, that hundreds of thousands of our country's seniors are going to bed hungry right now. Those are our mothers, our fathers, our veterans, the people who raised us,' said Enid Borden, president and CEO of Meals On Wheels Association of America. 'We are thankful that the Walmart Foundation understands that senior hunger is a major problem and can be eradicated. I applaud Walmart for stepping up to the plate, once again, to help us deliver the next meal so no senior goes hungry.'

As in years past, the majority of Walmart's holiday giving will happen at the local level with more than $24 million donated from the Walmart Foundation to nonprofits in the communities where Walmart's 4,000 stores and clubs are located. In addition, the Walmart Foundation will, once again, donate $1.25 million to The Salvation Army and Red Kettles will fundraise at Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations nationwide from Friday, Nov. 27 through Thursday, Dec. 24.

Later this holiday season, Walmart will announce additional recipients of its Walmart Gives Back holiday giving initiative. For more information, visit www.walmartgiving.com.

###

About Philanthropy at Walmart
Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are proud to support the charitable causes that are important to customers and associates in their own neighborhoods. Through its philanthropic programs and partnerships, the Walmart Foundation funds initiatives focused on creating opportunities in education, workforce development, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. From February 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009, Walmart – and its domestic and international foundations – gave more than $423 million in cash and in-kind gifts globally. To learn more, visit www.walmartfoundation.org.

About Feeding America
Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, our network members supply food to more than 25 million Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks support 63,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms. Feeding America is headquartered in Chicago. For more information on how you can fight hunger in your community and across the country, visit www.feedingamerica.org.

About Meals On Wheels
The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is the oldest and largest national organization in the United States representing those programs that provide meals to people in need. In spite of its huge toll, relatively few resources are dedicated to tackling this child killer.

The Global action plan for the prevention and control of pneumonia (GAPP) includes recommendations on what needs to be done, specific goals and targets, and estimates of what it will cost and how many lives will be saved. Its aim is to increase awareness of pneumonia as a major cause of child deaths, and it calls on global and national policy-makers, donor agencies and civil society to take immediate action to implement the plan.

"This action plan provides the strategy to prevent and control pneumonia, which today kills more children than any other illness," said Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. "We know the strategy will work, and if it is applied in every high burden country, we will be able to prevent millions of deaths."

"Pneumonia is the leading cause of under age five mortality, killing over 4 000 children every day," said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman. "Effective interventions to reduce deaths caused by pneumonia must be used more widely and made more readily available for children at risk."

The release of the GAPP strategy coincides with the first Global Pneumonia Summit being held in New York City on 2 November.

The GAPP has a three-pronged vision:

    * Protecting every child by providing an environment where they are at low risk of pneumonia (with exclusive breastfeeding for six months, adequate nutrition, preventing low-birth-weight, reducing indoor air pollution, and increasing hand washing);
* Preventing children from becoming ill with pneumonia (with vaccination against its causes: measles, pertussis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae b, as well as preventing and treating HIV in children, and providing zinc for children with diarrhoea);
* Treating children who become ill with pneumonia with the right care and antibiotics (in communities, health centres and hospitals).

The cost of implementing the GAPP by scaling up the recommended measures in the 68 high burden countries is estimated at US$ 39 billion for 2010-2015. The costs are expected to double over the six-year period, rising from an annual need of US$ 3.8 billion in 2010 to US$ 8.0 billion by 2015.

Specific targets and goals to be reached by 2015 under the GAPP strategy are to expand coverage of all relevant vaccines and exclusive breastfeeding rates to 90%, and raise the level of access to appropriate pneumonia case management to 90%. This will lead to a reduction in child pneumonia deaths by 65% and cutting the number of severe pneumonia cases in children by 25%, compared to 2000 levels.

— WebWireID106847 —

Health Care / Hospitals

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

Not for profit

Politics

Youth / Children

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

In the midst of the worst economy in decades, traditional methods of fundraising are not providing charities the means necessary to meet their ongoing expenses, according to Dennis Tubbergen, CEO of Charitable Concepts, LLC and inventor of Immediate Legacy™. Camps are closing their doors, scholarships are nearing extinction, and charities are frequently unable to serve the needs of those who they've helped in the past.

It's no surprise to Tubbergen traditional fundraising methods are falling short as these methods often rely heavily upon stock market performance. When the donors' investment portfolios are suffering or are in danger of suffering, donors are simply less likely to make charitable contributions. And, charities are painfully aware of this fact.

In these tough economic times, charities are now exploring new methods of fundraising, methods that get results, according to Tubbergen. They are finding these results in the patent-pending giving strategy called 'Immediate Legacy™', Tubbergen explains.

Immediate Legacy™ is one of the many topics that will be discussed at the 'Increasing Charitable Contributions in the Current Economy' workshop being held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this month. Charities are able to explore ways to expand their budgets and exceed fundraising goals when other organizations are tightening their belt or closing their doors all together.

Charities aren't the only ones that can benefit from the Immediate Legacy™ concept, Tubbergen explains. A charitable supporter who might be able to use the Immediate Legacy™ giving method could give a donation without permanently parting with an asset and still receive a tax deduction. This means if they qualify, the donor isn't giving to charity at their family's expense—their family will be made whole.

'We are very excited that this patent-pending program can create donations even in this tough economic environment,' Tubbergen says.

Charities selected to attend the 'Increasing Charitable Contributions in the Current Economy' workshop will benefit from a strategy-building setting relevant to their unique situation, Tubbergen notes. Leaders and decision makers for non-profit charitable organizations can find out more information on how to attend and possibly receive a complimentary stay in a four star hotel along with round-trip airfare by requesting an application and more details from MNemecek@ImmediateLegacy.com.
