Grassley (R-Iowa) <a href="http://www.whistleblowers.org/storage/whistleblowers/documents/FDAComplaint/grassleyletter.fdaspying.pdf" target="_blank"  >launched an investigation</a> in response to a <a href="http://www.whistleblowers.org/storage/whistleblowers/documents/FDAComplaint/fdacomplaint.redacted.pdf" target="_blank"  >lawsuit filed</a> by six FDA whistleblowers and <a href="http://www.whistleblowers.org/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1332" target="_blank"  >documents released</a> by the National Whistleblowers Center that show the FDA targeted whistleblowers for special monitoring and intercepted personal communications to Congress, including emails to Senator Grassley&#39;s staff.<br /> <br />Senator Grassley, the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a highly respected advocate of government oversight, launched an investigation into the FDA&#39;s targeted monitoring of whistleblowers. The Senator specifically asked FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg whether or not whistleblowers were singled out for special monitoring based on a <a href="http://www.whistleblowers.org/storage/whistleblowers/documents/FDAwhistleblowers/letter2transitionteam.pdf" target="_blank"  >letter they wrote to President-Elect Obama&#39;s Transition Team</a>.<br /> <br />Stephen M. Kohn, NWC Executive Director and attorney for six FDA whistleblowers, said:<br /> <br />&#34;The FDA went far beyond &#39;routine monitoring.&#39; They unconstitutionally targeted one group of employees simply because they had the guts to speak up about misconduct. The FDA cannot use unconstitutional tactics to enforce an otherwise neutral employee surveillance policy.&#34;<br /> <br />&#34;Targeted monitoring has a devastating chilling effect on all public employees, strangling the ability of the American public and Congress to learn about misconduct and corruption in the federal government.&#34;<br /> <br />The lawsuit filed last week by the six whislteblowers details how the FDA began targeting employees for special monitoring after learning that the employees blew the whistle on managers&#39; misconduct in approving unsafe medical devices.  The Agency installed (or activated) spyware on their workplace computers and used other technology that to monitor their password-protected Gmail-to-Gmail communications and take contemporaneous screen shots of the employees&#39; computer screens.</p>

<p>The FDA&#39;s prolonged, covert monitoring of the whistleblowers continued even after the HHS Office of Inspector General denied the FDA&#39;s request to take any criminal and/or administrative action against the whistleblowers.      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>West Palm Beach, FL &#8211; Attorney Brian Denney announced that a Highlands County jury awarded Theodore Hallgren $3,500,000.00 against Philip Morris USA Inc. and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for the wrongful death of his wife, Claire Hallgren, who died of lung cancer after nearly 60 years of smoking cigarettes made by those companies. The verdict includes $1,500,000 in punitive damages against the defendants.<br /> <br />Brian R. Denney and T. Hardee Bass of Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart &amp; Shipley, represented Mrs. Hallgren&#39;s husband, Theodore Hallgren, now 92.  The attorneys stated that the evidence in the trial showed that Mrs. Hallgren started smoking as a teenager, and was already a regular, daily smoker by the time she was sixteen years old in 1938, nearly 30 years before the first warning labels ever appeared on cigarette packs.  Under the standard required by the Florida Supreme Court&#39;s &#34;Engle&#34; decision, the plaintiff needed to prove that Mrs. Hallgren was addicted to nicotine and nicotine addiction caused her death.<br /> <br />Mr. and Mrs. Hallgren met at Chicago&#39;s Hurst High School in 1938.  They married in 1942, shortly before Mr. Hallgren, a Captain in the United States Army, was deployed to the Europe to fight in World War II.  After the war, the Hallgrens settled in the Chicago area, before moving to Florida in 1975.  They were married for 54 years.<br /> <br />&#39;The jury in this case was presented with a lot of evidence of tobacco industry conduct and practices, covering a large span of time,&#39; Denney said.  &#39;The jury&#39;s verdict is not only an indication that they understood the addictive power of nicotine and how Mrs. Hallgren fought to overcome that addiction; it is also a recognition that these defendants deserved punishment for their intentional misconduct, which included directly marketing cigarettes to children knowing full well they caused lung cancer and were addictive and lying to generations of Americans regarding the danger and addictiveness of their product for one reason &#8211;money.&#39;<br /> <br />&#39;Mrs. Hallgren is another tragic example of a tobacco industry success story, someone who started smoking as a child decades before warning labels were placed on cigarette packages, who became addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes, and who was unable to break that addiction before it was too late,&#39; said Denney.<br /> <br />&#39;Philip Morris USA Inc. and R.J.      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Shaun Donovan, the secretary for Housing and Urban Development (HUD), announced in late December a 12 point drop in the national number of <a href="http://www.projectfoot.org" target="_blank"  >homeless veterans</a> over just one year.<br /> <br />The un-told part of that story is that the statistics behind the announcement are based on two different methods of counting homeless veterans.<br /> <br />ABT Associates is the company that collates the homeless counts for HUD. Alvaro Cortes, the company&#39;s project director states, &#34;The reality is that these methodologies are changing all the time every year. I understand why one would focus on wanting to make sure that you have apple-to-apple comparisons, and you try to do that as best as possible.&#39;</p>

<p>In a study published on Monday, the GAO estimated that the number of <a href="http://www.projectfoot.org/femalehomelessveterans.htm" target="_blank"  >female homeless veterans</a> has doubled from 1,380 in 2006 to 3,328 in 2010. &#39;Absent more complete data, VA does not have the information needed to plan services effectively, allocate grants to providers and track progress toward its overall goal of ending veteran homelessness by 2015,&#39; the report said.</p>

<p>According to the VA budget summary, In 2012 the VA plans to spend $940 million on homelessness prevention programs. With a total budget of over $132 billion, that equates to 7/10th of one percent of the total VA Budget.</p>

In just the past few days, hundreds of letters have been generated to Congressmen and Senators from over 40 states. <a href="http://veterans-bill-of-rights.org" target="_blank"  >The Veterans Bill of Rights</a> addresses key issues with the Department of Veterans Affairs such as veteran homelessness, PTSD, discrimination, reintegration and hidden government programs.The petition can be found at <a href="http://www.Veterans-Bill-of-Rights.org" target="_blank">www.Veterans-Bill-of-Rights.org</a> . The Veteran&#39;s Bill of Rights states:</p>

<p><br />Dear Leaders of this Nation,</p>

<p>We the People of these United States do humbly ask that you codify once and for all a Bill of Rights for our Veterans and their families.</p>

<p>American military personnel and their families have offered their lives to defend our nation and its way of life. As such, there are certain rights that our society must afford to them to ensure that their service does not hinder a fair chance at the American dream.<br /><br />
<ol><li>All who are eligible, or may be eligible, for any military or veterans benefits should be treated with the utmost in respect and dignity at all times regardless of age, gender, branch of service, disability, military rank, sexual orientation, gender identity, location, mental illness, substance abuse status, incarceration status or type of discharge.</li><li>All service members, veterans and military family members who are, or who might be eligible for federal or state benefits have the right to be accurately and fully informed of those benefits on a regular basis. There should never be a &#34;hidden government program&#34; that is not prominently publicized.</li><li>All service members and military family members have the right to the best available reintegration training and lifetime support that should begin during their service when possible. The right to reintegration training should not be limited due to type of discharge.</li><li>Although it is impossible to provide all services at all facilities, the overall quality of services available should be equivalent regardless of geographical location within the United States and its territories.</li><li>All reasonable government efforts and policy changes should be made to ensure that employment rates for veterans in the United States are maintained at a rate that is equivalent to or higher than the average of the population at all times.</li><li>No Veteran should ever be left homeless. Any homeless veteran who has served 180 days or more of active duty should be entitled to transitional housing accommodations that are equivalent to the base housing that would be afforded to an E-1 on active duty with the same family status. In the event that conduct in one of these facilities becomes an issue, incarceration or treatment for the behavioral issues should be used as alternatives.</li><li>Chemical, radioactive, or environmental exposure: All service members, veterans, and military family members have the right to know the existence of any exposure or potential exposure and to receive notice and reasonable treatment for any exposure in a timely manner.</li><li>Combat stress reaction (CSR), Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Shell Shock, Battle Fatigue and any future names for any diagnosis that results in similar symptoms that are, or may have been caused by combat exposure during warfare or training exercises are to be treated at all times in a professional and medical manner. No service member or veteran who suffers from such a condition should ever be treated with less respect than if their injuries were purely physical.</li><li>Incarcerated Veterans should remain eligible for and should be afforded any medical, mental health, or substance abuse treatments to which they would otherwise be entitled. Additionally, upon release from incarceration, reintegration support should be afforded to them.</li><li>Children of service members or veterans have the right to quality education while accompanying a service member on orders.</li></ol><br />

<p>While jazz pianist Gilson Schachnik and<span style="font-style: italic"> jazz music drummer</span> Mauricio Zottarelli were both born in the state of Sao Paulo, it wasn&#39;t until they landed in Boston that Brazilian music seized their imagination.</p>

<p>But Brazilian music didn&#39;t capture their interest while they were in Brazil. Each grew up idolizing and playing American jazz. When they met at Berklee, however, their love of Brazilian music was rekindled. Says Zottarelli, &#39;it&#39;s our honest expression of the music we love. We&#39;re not trying to recreate something or recover the past. We don&#39;t have any kind of agenda. It just so happened that we fell in love with Brazilian music. Brazilian jazz, while living in Boston.</p>

<p>&#39;Reared on hard rock, European classical music, blues, funk and jazz, they independently found their way to Berklee College of Music, earning scholarships to study at the prestigious institution. Moving to the United States provided a sudden, jarring perspective shift, and a reappraisal of their relationship to their musical birthright. Their captivating new album<span style="font-style: italic"> Mozik</span> reflects their deep engagement with Brazilian jazz rhythms and forms, filtered through their love of the early fusion of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.</p>

<p>&#39;A lot of non-Brazilian musicians who play Brazilian jazz music are obsessed with being authentic,&#39; says Schachnik, who wrote most of the album&#39;s arrangements. &#39;That&#39;s not our goal at all. We&#39;re not trying to recreate bossa nova. We want to play with all the information that we&#39;ve gathered over the years. I grew up listening to Return to Forever and Headhunters.&#34;</p>

<p>Whatever qualms Schachnik (<a href="http://gilsonmusic.com/" target="_blank"  ><a href="http://gilsonmusic.com" target="_blank">http://gilsonmusic.com</a></a>) and Zottarelli once harbored about claiming Brazilian music as their own are washed away in this roots samba jazz celebration of Brazil&#39;s miscegenated culture.</p>

<p>Zottarelli grew up in the town of Rio Claro in the state of Sao Paulo, immersed in music. He earned a degree in computer science in 1997, but his love of music led him to apply for and earn a scholarship to a summer program at Berklee. When he came to Boston in 1999 he thought it was just for a season, but he kept earning new scholarships to study film scoring, arranging, and performance, and by 2002 Zottarelli had graduated from Berklee.</p>

<p>With his versatility and wide rhythmic palette Zottarelli has become one of the most sought after drummers on the scene since moving to New York City in 2006. He&#39;s toured internationally with Japanese pianist Hiromi&#39;s Sonicbloom, while performing and recording with an international array of artists, including Eliane Elias, Marc Johnson, Prasanna, Esperanza Spalding, Keiko Matsui, Richard Bona, Claudio Roditi, Chuck Loeb, Rosa Passos, Jovino Santos Neto, Nilson Matta, Toninho Horta, Filó Machado, Cidinho Teixeira, Marc Rossi Group, Hendrik Meurkens, and Oriente Lopez.</p>

<p>He co-leads Dig Trio and recently released his first album under his own name<span style="font-style: italic"> 7 Lives</span>, which documents his evolving synthesis of jazz, Brazilian jazz music and fusion. It&#39;s a vision that he also explores with Schachnik on<span style="font-style: italic"> Mozik</span>, a jazz album conceived by Brazilian musicians who approach the music of their homeland with fresh ears and open hearts.</p>
