Moms and Dads Can Help Good Children Text Their Holiday List to Santa and Keep Track of Him on the Big Night

Dallas, Texas, Good little boys and girls across the country can text their holiday wish-list to Santa and track Santa's sleigh journey faster than ever this year, thanks to the bearded man in red and some of his helpers, including AT&T.* According to the North Pole, Santa has decided to use the latest digital tools to spread holiday cheer through a holiday texting campaign and a special app on AT&T U-verseSM TV.

AT&T customers who text SANTA to 1224 between now and Dec. 24 will receive an invitation from jolly old St. Nick himself to text back their wish-lists for this holiday season. Thanks to a special agreement between Santa and AT&T, text messages sent to this short code – and the reply text messages from Santa – will be offered at no charge.

Families can also keep up with Santa and enjoy holiday fun for the whole family with a new interactive Santa Tracker app and on-demand holiday entertainment on AT&T U-verse TV. This year, U-verse TV families will be able to visit the North Pole and follow Santa's every move on Christmas Eve with Santa Tracker. The app is now available to all U-verse TV and High Speed Internet customers at no extra charge on channel 98 for the holiday season.

'If you think Santa and the elves are fast at making toys, you should see them texting! It was clearly the season to go digital,' said Susan Bean, North Pole representative for Santa Claus. 'We wanted to give children out there more ways than ever to send Santa their wish-lists and watch what's going on at the North Pole. So when AT&T offered to make it easy for their customers to text the North Pole and keep dibs on the crew on U-verse TV, we knew we had to jump on it.'

With Santa Tracker, families will be able to read bios for Santa's reindeer; get holiday arts and crafts project ideas; play sing-a-longs for popular holiday music; read facts about the North Pole; play 'Gingerbread Man' and 'Repeat' holiday games; and view a countdown to Christmas Eve. You will also be able to vote on whether your family deserves a visit from Santa in the 'Naughty and Nice' poll, and you can see instant polling results from other U-verse TV families. And on Christmas Eve, you can watch live reports from the Santa News Network to see if Santa has left the North Pole and track his sleigh as he travels around the globe.

AT&T U-verse TV also has a new 'Happy Holiday Movies' section in the On Demand library featuring classic holiday movies. The movies range from $2 to $7 per rental, and are available in Standard Definition (SD), High Definition (HD) or both. From Dec. 14 through Dec. 20, U-verse TV customers can get $1 off their rental of 'Nothing Like the Holidays' by entering coupon code '15001' for SD and '115001' for HD in the Offers On Demand app on channel 199.

For details on how to keep up with Santa this holiday, tips and hot deals on gifts that don't come from the North Pole, and ways to personalize your wireless experience, AT&T invites you to visit www.att.com/holidaygifts — especially if you have made Santa's 'Nice' list.

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

About AT&T
AT&T Inc.

The 2010 Ford Fusion has been a popular choice among Boston car buyers and much of the nation, and for good reason. The celebrated Fusion was just selected by Motor Trend Magazine for their prestigious Car of the Year® award. The award comes on the heels of the Fusion setting record-breaking sales for 2009.

To win the coveted Car of the Year award, Fusion outperformed the competition - including the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan - in six new categories: design achievement, engineering excellence, intended function, efficiency, safety and value.

Stoneham Ford in Massachusetts says the Fusion is one of their best selling models. It is also among the nation's top 10-selling vehicles and the number 1-selling domestic car in America.

Boston Ford Fusion owners particularly love the Fusion's gas efficiency. With EPA-estimated 23 City/34 Hwy/27 combined mpg, Ford Fusion is at the head of its class in fuel economy. The new Fusion offers Boston residents more of what they love; power, class-exclusive technologies, such as Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) and Ford SYNC®; and more total passenger and luggage capacity than the Toyota Camry.

According to Mike Warwick of Stoneham Ford, the Fusion delivers the key attributes that midsize sedan buyers are looking for. 'With best-in-class fuel economy, more power than previous models and a significant leap in residual value, the Fusion can accommodate many different lifestyles and individual needs.'

Boston Ford shoppers who would like to learn more about the 2010 Ford Fusion can visit http://www.fordmassachusetts.com/for-sale/ford-fusion

— WebWireID108207 —

Automotive

Lifestyle / Society

Retail

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

WASHINGTON -- NASA launched a social media experience at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida that quickly turned into an unprecedented world-wide event as more than 100 Twitter users got a unique look inside America's space program and front row seats to the Nov. 16 liftoff of the space shuttle Atlantis.

People from as far away as New Zealand participated in Kennedy's first Tweetup, an event where bloggers meet face-to-face and share their experiences in 140 character online bursts. During the two-day event Twitter users, or Tweeps, took behind-the-scenes tours of Kennedy, spoke at length with NASA astronauts, technicians, engineers and managers, and saw a launch from the vantage point usually reserved for more traditional media.

"We were very excited by the extraordinary number of people from all over the world who participated," said Lori Garver, NASA's deputy administrator. "NASA will continue to evolve with the social media environment and look for new ways to engage the public and spread the word about the tremendous things we do."

The Tweetup, identified by the search term #nasatweetup, was the third highest trending topic Nov. 15 on the social networking service. The micro-blogs, or tweets, are text-based Internet posts that are delivered to the author's subscribers. The more than 100 people in attendance had over 150,000 followers. As people share and forward the information, the potential online reach could be in the millions.

People from 21 states and the District of Columbia attended, as did guests who flew from Canada, England, Morocco and New Zealand. Participants ranged in age from 18 to more than 60, with most being under age 40. NASA Television also streamed video of Tweetup events online where more than 7,500 viewers watched the events prior to launch.

"The way people are communicating and receiving information is undergoing a global revolution," said Morrie Goodman, NASA's assistant administrator for Public Affairs. "NASA is a recognized leader in adopting social media and this is another exciting 'first' for the agency."

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory held the first NASA Tweetup on Jan. 21. NASA Headquarters held its first Tweetup on July 21, followed by another from Headquarters Sept. 24 that featured the STS-127 space shuttle crew. On Oct. 21, NASA held a smaller Tweetup, allowing 35 Tweeps to talk with Nicole Stott and Jeff Williams aboard the International Space Station via a live downlink.

In April, Mike Massimino (@Astro_Mike) became NASA's first astronaut to tweet. Astro_Mike reached 1 million Twitter followers on Sept. 23. He sent his first tweet from space while flying on the STS-125 Hubble servicing mission in May. Since then, 12 other NASA astronauts have set up Twitter accounts. You can follow them individually or through the NASA Astronauts Twitter account at:

http://twitter.com/NASA_Astronauts

To view the Nov. 15 portion of the Tweetup on YouTube, visit:

http://www.youtube.com/user/NASAtelevision#p/u/3/wl9zBgpmdjQ

To view photos from the STS-129 launch Tweetup, visit:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nasahqphoto/sets/72157622806978124

For more information about NASA's Tweetup events, visit:

http://www.nasa.gov/tweetup

To view all NASA's Twitter and other social media accounts at:

http://www.nasa.gov/connect

For more information about space shuttle Atlantis' STS-129 mission, visit:

http://www.nasa.gov/shuttle

— WebWireID108225 —

Advertising / Marketing

Aerospace / Defense

Government

Lifestyle / Society

Multimedia / Online / Internet

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Effort Aims to Educate Travelers about H1N1

Every holiday season, millions of Americans travel through the nation's airports, seaports, and train stations to spend time with loved ones. Special holiday get-togethers – and traveling itself – bring people close together but also provide an ideal way for illness to spread. To help travelers avoid the flu this holiday season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today launched its largest ever public awareness campaign about staying healthy while traveling.

'The holidays are one of the busiest travel times of the year,' said Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. 'People are in close contact – whether they're on a plane, train, ship or just visiting with loved ones. This campaign provides practical advice to help travelers prepare for their trips and stay healthy during their holiday travel.'

CDC is urging people to take the following steps when planning their travel and to stay informed about what to do if they get sick while they're gone, including:

    * Traveling only when they are feeling well
* Getting vaccinated for flu (both seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 if they are in a priority group)
* Washing hands often
* Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve

'We know that flu – and specifically H1N1 this year – is a big concern for people, but flu shouldn't ruin the holidays,' Dr. Schuchat said. 'By practicing a little prevention, people can enjoy their holidays and stay well at the same time.'

CDC developed the campaign in response to the emergence in April of the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic. Since then, flu has spread throughout the country and around the world. In the United States, it has accounted for millions of cases and more than 4,000 deaths since April.

CDC launched the campaign at a joint event with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today in Washington, D.C. The campaign will run through the holiday season and use a variety of media, including informational posters at major airports, ports of entry and border crossings; national radio and print advertising; and social media and online outreach.

North Pole: Due to budgetary cutbacks, Santa Claus announced today that his stops on Christmas Eve will be limited to deliveries of toys to good little girls and boys. He has designated Shop The Gift Basket Store as his 'Top Elf', making them the primary source of holiday gifts and gift baskets for co-workers, friends and everyone else.

Hoping to help the economy and to sustain the holiday gift giving season, he is encouraging everyone to visit www.shopthegiftbasketstore.com and for good reason. Customers can purchase holiday gourmet gifts, holiday gift baskets, and Christmas cookie and candy bouquets. Santa thinks everyone should try the Belgian chocolate dipped pretzels, but please don't delay!

'As much as I would like to land on everyone's rooftop Christmas Eve, this tough economy has made me cut my list once or twice, and I can only deliver toys to children who have been nice,' reported Santa Claus. 'I know that Shop The Gift Basket Store can deliver wonderful holiday hams and Christmas gift baskets to the office, friend or family's homes. They even have holiday gifts for cats and dogs, I make no bones.'

'I am sure it will be disappointing to Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, but we have Christmas gift baskets with all the fixins,' exclaimed Suzanne Salzmann, Sales Director for Shop The Gift Basket Store. 'We have dozens of holiday gifts that can be sent cross country or right next door... why go anywhere else when we have more.'

'With many people not being able to travel and visit relatives this holiday season, sending a gourmet gift basket makes shipping gifts all within reason. If you can't be sitting at the dinner table with your nephew or niece, your holiday offering will be a lovely centerpiece. It will be just like you are there, but no fighting traffic and hardly a care!' said Salzmann.

Sending a festive gift is easy at www.shopthegiftbasketstore.com The hardest part will be making a selection from their large array of gifts.
New Report Finds Only 25 Percent of Adults Aged 50-64 Get Recommended Preventive Screenings

New Resource Offers Needed Data and Strategies to Reduce Illness and Premature Death

Only about 1 in 4 Americans aged 50–64 regularly take advantage of preventive services such as screenings and immunizations, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with AARP and the American Medical Association (AMA).

The report, 'Promoting Preventive Services for Adults 50–64: Community and Clinical Partnerships,' focuses on opportunities to improve the health of the growing number of adults in the 50–64 age bracket to broaden the use of potentially lifesaving preventive services.

The report identifies recommended preventive services such as influenza vaccine, cholesterol screening, breast and cervical cancer screening, as well as preventive screenings for behaviors that could negatively impact health such as binge drinking.

'People aged 50–64 need access to preventive services to help them improve their overall health and to live vibrant, productive lives,' said CDC Director Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. 'CDC and our partners AARP and AMA are excited about this new resource because it enables our partners and others to more easily and effectively monitor improvements in health behaviors, screenings and immunizations. Our goal is to enhance the delivery and use of these recommended preventive services.'

By 2015, an estimated 63 million U.S. adults will be between the ages of 50 and 64, comprising 20 percent of the nation's population. They are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer than younger adults. Almost one–third of adults in this age group are uninsured or underinsured, which heightens the challenges of ensuring they receive critical preventive services.

Wayne Giles, M.D., M.S., director of CDC's Division of Adult and Community Health, and a member of the committee that prepared the report, emphasized the importance of addressing disparities in the use of preventive services. 'The racial and ethnic composition of adults in the United States is becoming more diverse. We must take this trend into

account as we promote the use of clinical preventive services to ensure that appropriate strategies are implemented to improve the health of all adults.'

The report describes proven, science–based strategies that highlight clinical and community efforts to promote the delivery of multiple or bundled preventive services. The report also highlights model programs, policies and strategies that communities can adopt, in concert with health care partners, to make sure services reach those in need. Calls to Action identify existing gaps and barriers in research, data and action, and highlight opportunities through model programs, policy and environmental strategies, and enhanced health tracking.

CDC's healthy aging program develops tools and programs designed to help older adults live longer, more productive and independent lives. By promoting health and disease prevention, CDC works to improve the quality of life of older adults and slow the expected growth of health care and long–term costs for this and future generations.

To view the full report and for more information about CDC's health aging activities visit www.cdc.gov/aging.

— WebWireID108191 —

Government

Health Care / Hospitals

Lifestyle / Society

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Highest Rates of Obesity, Diabetes in the South, Appalachia, and Some Tribal Lands

Estimates of Obesity Now Available for all U.S. Counties

Wide sections of the Southeast, Appalachia, and some tribal lands in the West and Northern Plains have the nation′s highest rates of obesity and diabetes, according to estimates released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In many counties in those regions, rates of diagnosed diabetes exceed 10 percent and obesity prevalence is more than 30 percent.

The estimates, in this week′s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, are the first to provide county–level snapshots of obesity across the United States. They also update diabetes county–level estimates released in 2008.

Eighty–one percent of counties in the Appalachian region that includes Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia have high rates of diabetes and obesity. So do three–quarters of counties in the southern region that includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

'Diabetes is costly in human and economic terms, and it′s urgent that we take action to prevent and control this serious disease,' said Dr. Ann Albright, director of CDC′s Division of Diabetes Translation. 'The study shows strong regional patterns of diabetes and can help focus prevention efforts where they are most needed.'

The estimates come from the agency′s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which uses self–reported data from state–based adult telephone surveys, and 2007 census information. The information may help public health workers, health care providers, community organizations, and policymakers focus on high–risk regions to prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications as well as other chronic diseases linked to obesity, including heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

The proportion of U.S. adults who are obese was 26.1 percent in 2008, according to BRFSS data. CDC estimates that nearly 8 percent of the population, or about 24 million people, have diabetes. Of these, 5.7 million are undiagnosed.

'The small–area estimates for obesity will be an important tool to help communities better understand and battle this serious public health problem. Communities are in the best position to prevent and reduce obesity among their citizens through innovative programs," said Dr. William H. Dietz, director of CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity.

The medical costs of obesity reached an estimated $147 billion in 2008, and the medical costs of diabetes were $116 billion. People with diagnosed diabetes have medical costs that are 2.3 times higher than those without the disease.

Obesity is one of several factors linked to type 2 diabetes. Where people live, how much money they earn, their culture and their family history also play a role. An unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, and socioeconomic factors contribute to both obesity and type 2 diabetes as well as to complications of diabetes. Some population groups also are at higher risk, including a number of racial and ethnic minorities.

CDC and its partners are working on a variety of initiatives to prevent type 2 diabetes and to reduce obesity. CDC has recommended 24 community strategies to prevent obesity, from providing greater access to healthy foods to redesigning communities to encourage more physical activity. The agency is also in a new partnership with state, federal, and nonprofit agencies targeting health disparities in Mississippi, which has the nation′s highest obesity rate and one of the highest rates of diabetes. CDC′s national diabetes prevention and control program provides resources and technical assistance to state health departments, national organizations, and communities.

To see county–level estimates of obesity and diagnosed diabetes, go to www.cdc.gov/diabetes/statistics. For more information on diabetes and preventing the disease, visit www.cdc.gov/diabetes.
Thanksgiving Provides A Unique Challenge For Those With Eating Disorders: 5 Easy Tips

DELMAR, Calif., Nov. 19

   1. Don't focus on body image. Comments about weight should be avoided. Instead consider compliments such as, "You look healthy and happy!"
2. Don't watch what others eat. If someone wants to eat more or less than you during the holidays, do not make that the focus of your concern. If you focus on what you are eating, you can set a healthy example. If you tell others to eat more or less, you are adding pressure to those who are already struggling with eating issues.
3. Thanksgiving is a day of eating. If you have eating issues, then understand that Thanksgiving is the most difficult day of the year for you. See this day as a good challenge for you and all the people around the world who struggle with eating disorders. You are not alone.
4. Create your own bubble of comfort. Set your own eating boundaries and do not allow the comments or expectations of others to change what is comfortable for you. If you give yourself the freedom to say "no" to others who are trying to get you to eat more, then you can feel good about not letting others push you out of your comfort zone.
5. Allow yourself to be human. Allow yourself the freedom to have some stress and not react perfectly especially during the most difficult holiday for people with eating issues.

If you need more help, find an eating disorder treatment professional in your area by using the easiest and most comprehensive treatment search site on the Internet, www.edreferral.com. This is the site that has been helping others find ED treatment since 1999 and is used by most eating disorder professionals.

Christine Hartline, MA Director, EDReferral.com

EDReferral.com is a free service that helps people with eating disorders. Referrals are available 24 hours a day for those seeking help with Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity, Binge Eating Disorder and many other eating disorders. EDReferral.com was founded by Christine Hartline, MA, who herself had an eating disorder and found it difficult to find assistance. She now runs the world's largest and most respected referral service for eating disorder treatment. "EDReferral.com helps thousands of individuals every single day," said Ms. Hartline, "Not only in the U.S. but all across the world...we are providing hope for recovery." The respect placed on EDReferral.com is not only due to the amazing efforts of Ms. Hartline, but also because many in the eating disorder field applaud the fact that EDReferral.com is not affiliated with any one treatment center. "There are a few organizations that say they are a referral service, but they only point you to their own treatment center in the end," said Dr. Kevin Grold who is the Chief Administrator of the ever-expanding service.

Dr Daniel Goldberg, a renowned cornea, cataract and LASIK eye surgeon in NJ, announces the addition of the Zeiss-Meditec Visante Omni technology to his Laser Vision center in Little Silver. The Omni is the most advanced technology for LASIK and corneal analysis and provides the most precise and unique assessment for screening abnormal corneas.

The Visante® Omni is the first system to combine OCT and Placido disk technologies, which creates a new dimension in corneal and anterior segment evaluation. According to Dr Goldberg, the new technology will result in better screening for abnormal corneas as well as enable him to provide more accurate counseling regarding candidacy for laser vision correction.

Visante OCT delivers valuable pre- and post-surgical information for use in excimer laser surgery and corneal transplants as well as pre-and post-glaucoma surgical care and phakic IOL implantations. The OCT will image intraocular lens implants and aid in diagnosis of proper intraocular lens size and position.

To learn more about NJ LASIK Surgery options, visit Dr Goldberg's website at http://www.goldberg4lasik.com/

About Dr Daniel Goldberg
Dr. Daniel Goldberg specializes in comprehensive refractive surgery including LASIK eye surgery and refractive intraocular lens and cataract surgery. His initial research and findings led to the FDA approval of LASIK. Dr Goldberg has 25 years of experience in refractive surgery and has performed over 10,000 LASIK surgery procedures. He recently became the first New Jersey eye surgeon to use the implantable contact lens (ICL) - a new technology to correct nearsightedness in individuals with extremely high prescriptions.

More information on Dr Goldberg is available at http://www.lasiksurgery-nj.com/

About The Atlantic Laser Vision Center

The Atlantic Laser Center in Little Silver where Daniel B Goldberg MD FACS is Director of Refractive/LASIK Surgery is committed to providing the best environment and the best technology for laser vision correction in New Jersey.

Cybercriminals Take Advantage of the Holiday Season, Aiming to Steal Consumers' Money, Identities and Financial Information

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - As cybercriminals begin to take advantage of the holiday season, McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE) today revealed the 'Twelve Scams of Christmas' – the twelve most dangerous online scams that computer users should be cautious of this holiday season. According to Consumer Reports' 2009 State of the Net Survey, cybercriminals have bilked $8 billion from consumers in the past two years, and McAfee warns consumers not to fall victim to the top scams this year.

'Cybercriminals' use their best schemes during the holidays to steal people's money, credit card information, social security number and identity,' said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee Labs. 'These thieves follow seasonal trends and create holiday-related Web sites, scams and other convincing e-mails that can trick even the most cautious users.'

McAfee's Twelve Scams of Christmas

Scam I: Charity Phishing Scams – Be Careful Who You Give To

During the holiday season, hackers take advantage of citizens' generosity by sending e-mails that appear to be from legitimate charitable organizations. In reality, they are fake Web sites designed to steal donations, credit card information and the identities of donors.

Scam II: Fake Invoices from Delivery Services to Steal Your Money

During the holidays, cybercriminals often send fake invoices and delivery notifications appearing to be from Federal Express, UPS or the U.S. Customs Service. They e-mail consumers asking for credit card details to credit back the account, or require users to open an online invoice or customs form to receive the package. Once completed, the person's information is stolen or malware is automatically installed on their computer.

Scam III: Social Networking – A Cybercriminal 'Wants to be Your Friend'

Cybercriminals take advantage of this social time of the year by sending authentic-looking 'New Friend Request' e-mails from social networking sites. Internet users should beware that clicking on links in these e-mails can automatically install malware on computers and steal personal information.

Scam IV: The Dangers of Holiday E-Cards

Cyber thieves cash in on consumers who send holiday e-cards in an effort to be environmentally conscious. Last holiday season, McAfee Labs discovered a worm masked as Hallmark e-cards and McDonald's and Coca-Cola holiday promotions. Holiday-themed PowerPoint e-mail attachments are also popular among cybercriminals. Be careful what you click on.

Scam V: 'Luxury' Holiday Jewelry Comes at a High Price

McAfee Labs recently uncovered a new holiday campaign that leads shoppers to malware-ridden sites offering 'discounted' luxury gifts from Cartier, Gucci, and Tag Heuer. Cybercriminals even use fraudulent logos of the Better Business Bureau to trick shoppers into buying products they never receive.

Scam VI: Practice Safe Holiday Shopping – Online Identity Theft on the Rise

Forrester Research Inc. predicts online holiday sales will increase this year, as more bargain hunters turn to the Web for deals. While users shop and surf on open hotspots, hackers can spy on their activity in an attempt to steal their personal information. McAfee tells users never to shop online from a public computer or on an open Wi-Fi network.

Scam VII: Christmas Carol Lyrics Can Be Dangerous – Risky Holiday Searches

During the holidays, hackers create fraudulent holiday-related Web sites for people searching for a holiday ringtone or wallpaper, Christmas carol lyrics or a festive screensaver. Downloading holiday-themed files may infect one's computer with spyware, adware or other malware. McAfee found one Christmas carol download site that led searchers to adware, spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.

Scam VIII: Out of Work – Job-Related E-mail Scams

The U.S. unemployment rate recently spiked to 10.2 per cent, the highest level since 1983. Scammers are preying on desperate job-seekers in the poor economy, with the promise of high-paying jobs and work-from-home moneymaking opportunities. Once interested persons submit their information and pay their 'set-up' fee, hackers steal their money instead of following through on the promised employment opportunity.

Scam IX: Outbidding for Crime – Auction Site Fraud

Scammers often lurk on auction sites during the holiday season. Buyers should beware of auction deals that appear too good to be true, because often times these purchases never reach their new owner.

Scam X: Password Stealing Scams

Password theft is rampant during the holidays, as thieves use low-cost tools to uncover a person's password and send out malware to record keystrokes, called keylogging. Once criminals have access to one or more passwords, they gain vast access to consumers' bank and credit card details and clean out accounts within minutes. They also commonly send out spam from a user's account to their contacts.

Scam XI: E-Mail Banking Scams

Cybercriminals trick consumers into divulging their bank details by sending official-looking e-mails from financial institutions. They ask users to confirm their account information, including a user name and password, with a warning that their account will become invalid if they do not comply. Then they often sell this information through an underground online black market.

McAfee Labs believes cybercriminals are more actively scamming consumers with this tactic during the holidays since people are monitoring their purchases closely.

Scam XII: Your Files for Ransom – Ransomware Scams

Hackers gain control of people's computers through several of these holiday scams. They then act as virtual kidnappers to hijack computer files and encrypt them, making them unreadable and inaccessible. The scammer holds the user's files ransom by demanding payment in exchange for getting them back.

McAfee advises Internet users to follow these five tips to protect their computers and personal information:

1. Never Click on Links in E-Mails: Go directly to a company or charity's Web site by typing in the address or using a search engine. Never click on a link in an e-mail.

2. Use Updated Security Software: Protect your computer from malware, spyware, viruses and other threats with updated security suites. McAfee® Total Protection software provides fully-featured protection from current and emerging threats. It also comes built in with McAfee SiteAdvisor® technology, a safe search toolbar to warn consumers of a Web site's safety rating as well as phishing protection. It uses intuitive red, yellow and green checkmarks to rate potentially dangerous Web sites when searched on Google, Yahoo! or Bing.

3. Shop and Bank on Secure Networks: Only check bank accounts or shop online on secure networks at home or work, wired or wireless. Wi-Fi networks should always be password-protected so hackers cannot gain access to them and spy on online activity.

Also, remember to only shop on Web sites that begin with https://, instead of http://, and seek out Web sites with security trustmarks, like McAfee SECURE™.

4. Use Different Passwords: Never use the same passwords for several online accounts. Diversify passwords and use a complex combination of letters, numbers and symbols.

5. Use Common Sense: If you are ever in doubt that an offer or product is not legitimate, do not click on it. Cybercriminals are behind many of the seemingly 'good' deals on the Web, so exercise caution when searching and buying.

If you think you may be a victim of cybercrime, visit McAfee's Cybercrime Response Unit to assess your risks and learn what to do next at www.mcafee.com/cru.

About McAfee, Inc.

McAfee, Inc., headquartered in Santa Clara, California, is the world's largest dedicated security technology company. Annual growth rates are currently over 10%.

Launching the report, Lloyd's Finance Director, Luke Savage, said:

'Bringing insurance to three billion low income individuals is a real opportunity to reduce poverty and give individuals the ability to invest in sustainable projects without the fear of loss from natural catastrophes or other destructive forces.

''But it is not a one way trade. There are benefits for commercial insurers too, which include larger and diversified risk pools, first mover advantage into new markets, market intelligence and innovations that can be applied to other business activities,' he said.

The demand for microinsurance is set to rise on the back of the global recession, with 50-90 million people predicted to be plunged back in to poverty over 2009.

While recessionary pressures will influence the amount seeking microinsurance, the policies and business itself will be further shaped by numerous variables, including: economic growth; urbanisation; financial sector development; climate change; and information technology.

Mr Savage pointed out that the partnership between business and government in this field is not new, highlighting the success of government subsidised schemes.

The report looks at the role of regulation in building and improving the provision of microinsurance, including:

- Responding to the implications of limited data and information on policyholders and different risk structures.

- Ensuring that products are appropriate to the needs of low-income consumers in terms of coverage, structure and even language.
- Recognition and if necessary regulation of fast and cost-effective settlement mechanisms, which may include simpler documentation requirements and claims handling by the distribution channel

— WebWireID108062 —

Banking / Financial Services

Financial Markets

Insurance

Lifestyle / Society

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Dog names may be selected with great thought and family discussion but often a four-legged friend is far better known by a nickname. Whether it's assigned based on his size ('Big Boy'), his favorite food ('Cornbread'), or his given name ('Dudley-Wudley'), nicknames are just one more way dog lovers identify their furry friends as a real member of the family.

'Dogs are being welcomed into our homes and our hearts more than ever before so it's a natural step to give our dogs nicknames just as we would for other members of the family,' says Paris Permenter, co-publisher of DogTipper.com. 'Some of these names are used within the family while other nicknames make their way out of the house as the dog explores the world on walks and visits to the dog park—so many nicknames almost become second names.'

DogTipper.com recently hosted a contest in which over 1,600 dog lovers shared their dog's nicknames. The most popular dog nicknames were:

1.	Beanie Weanie
2.	Boo Boo
3.	Bubba
4.	Doodlebug
5.	Fluffy
6.	Nuggy
7.	Shortie
8.	Smoochie
9.	Stinky
10.	Sugar Pie
11.	Sweetie

Some nicknames fetched far fewer entries; here are the 10 most unusual dog nicknames received by DogTipper.com:

1.	Baba Ganoosh
2.	Bamboozle
3.	Cuddle Bunny
4.	Demon Dog
5.	Dishwasher Pre-Rinse
6.	Sausage McMuffin
7.	Spiky McSchnoodle
8.	Toesywoesy
9.	Willywoowoo
10.

It may be cold and dark outside, but now is the time to buy a convertible at Autoquake. Britain's largest online used car retailer has over 50 drop-tops in stock at prices which have plummeted by an average of £1,403 (10%) in just two months.

'The market for convertibles always goes quiet in winter, but this year's price drops are steeper than normal,' said Fredrik Skantze, Autoquake's Founder. 'Smart buyers can take advantage of this seasonal trend to buy a car for hundreds of pounds less than they might pay in spring or summer.'

The Autoquake stock of Audi convertibles is on average £1,923 (10.7%) cheaper than two months ago. Used Peugeot convertibles are down £960 (11.5%) and used Renaults have dropped by £1307 (15.1%).

In spite of Britain's reputation for bad weather, wet days make up less than half the year (153 days annually*), and winter is only slightly wetter than summer, so there's no need to be put off running a convertible all-year round.

'There are 15 wet days in December. That's just three more than in July,' explained Skantze. 'Even if the weather turns, modern drop-tops are well insulated against the cold, and the latest generation of cars with folding metal hard-tops in place of a fabric roof are just like coupés with the roof raised.'

The speed at which convertible car prices are falling is outstripping the rest of the used car market. Autoquake's stock has seen an average fall of 7.6% from September to November. While convertible prices have dropped 10%, estates have fallen by 8.3%, five-seat MPVs have dropped by 7.9%, and executive saloons have lost 6.9%.

Buyers shouldn't expect these low prices to last forever. 'We expect prices to stabilise or rise slightly in January, and convertible prices will pick up in the spring,' said Skantze. 'So now is the time to buy a bargain.'

*Annual rainfall for the London area, according to the BBC Weather website.

— WebWireID107975 —

Automotive

Big Box Retail / Supermarkets

Lifestyle / Society

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

New Study From MEC Shows 18-34 Year-Old Shoppers Trust Their Idols

NEW YORK — Young adults are more likely to purchase a product or service based on the recommendation of a celebrity endorser than older shoppers, according to a new study by leading media agency Mediaedge:cia (MEC).

The report revealed that 30 percent of respondents aged 18-34 said they would try a product promoted by an admired celebrity compared to 14 percent of consumers in the 35-54 age group and 11 percent of respondents aged 55-plus. Additionally, the survey showed that the younger group was also almost 50 percent more likely than their older counterparts to recommend a celebrity-endorsed product to others.

Those were only some of the findings of the wide-ranging report, dubbed MEC's Celebrity Endorsement SENSOR™, which was conducted in early 2009 among a nationally representative sample of U.S. consumers aged 18 years and older.

Other survey findings included the following:

• The majority of Americans pursue celebrities via news outlets (58 percent), and information on the Internet (31 percent)

• Adults ages 18-34 and men are most likely to engage with celebrities via digitally related activities such as posting comments on blogs that cover celebrities, becoming a 'friend' of a celebrity on a social networking site, and forwarding a celebrity link, picture or video to others online

• Interest in celebrities declines significantly as consumers get older

The report also revealed that 35 percent of respondents believe celebrity endorsements improve a brand's awareness, help define its personality, and generate interest.

But the survey also revealed an important caveat about using celebrity endorsers that advertisers should keep in mind: More than half of those surveyed (53 percent) said they have trouble remembering which celebrities are endorsing which brands and only notice a brand if it's in a category they are interested in.

'Although 25 percent of all adults have had their purchase influenced, either positively or negatively, by celebrity endorsers, advertisers have to be selective in their choice of celebrities,' said Fran Kennish, Strategic Planning Director for Mediaedge:cia, who reported the study's findings along with MEC MediaLab Supervisor Ed Kavilanz. 'A careful match of the celebrity personality, the category and the brand they represent, and the consumer can magnify the value and the effectiveness of celebrities as a communication vehicle.'

The survey also showed that not all product and service categories are created equal as far as celebrity endorsements are concerned: fashion, beauty/fragrance, luxury goods and sporting equipment get the most benefit from celebrity endorsement

For most categories, celebrity endorsers ranked low against 23 other purchase influencers, losing out to other factors and touch points like pricing, TV ads and product reviews. But when viewed against fashion, beauty/fragrance, luxury goods and sporting equipment celebrity endorsements have a stronger influence, ranking in the top 10 purchase influencing factors.

'There's no doubt that celebrity endorsement can play a valuable and important role in today's complex marketing environment,' said Kennish. 'Celebrity endorsement drives brand saliency, can evoke closer consumer engagement with the brand and, under optimal conditions, drives purchase. But marketers need to remember that it resonates more with specifically defined audiences where an underlying connection between the consumer and the celebrity already exists.'

The survey was part of a larger, global study of celebrity endorsements by MEC MediaLab of more than 24,000 consumers across 25 countries. That study showed that while celebrity endorsement is still an effective marketing tool, consumer appetite for it is waning.

Almost a third of consumers (29 percent) across the globe said that celebrity endorsements influence their purchasing decisions and one in four (25 percent) have bought a product because a celebrity was promoting it. But the majority (65 percent) of respondents said they believe that too many products are promoted by celebrities in their country.

'While the impact of celebrity endorsement may be waning, it remains an important and effective marketing tool for many brands,' said Damian Thompson, global head of consumer insight at MEC . 'However, it appears that interest in celebrity culture has peaked in some countries and marketers need to be more strategic in their use of celebrity endorsements. They must analyze and understand the fit between celebrity, brand, and consumer—along with a celebrity's relationship with the media—to implement a well thought-through activation plan and measurable return.'

ABOUT MEDIAEDGE:CIA
Mediaedge:cia (MEC) gets consumers actively engaged with clients' brands, leading to positive awareness, deeper relationships and stronger sales.
