SAN JOSE – eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) today announced that the investor group led by Silver Lake, which had previously entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in Skype from the company, has reached a settlement agreement with Joltid Limited and Joost N.V. that gives Skype ownership over all software previously licensed from Joltid and ends all litigation currently pending against the investor group and eBay at the closing of the acquisition.

As part of the settlement agreement, Joltid and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis will join the investor group, contributing Joltid software and making a significant capital investment in exchange for a 14 percent stake in Skype. As a result, Silver Lake and other investors including Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), will together hold 56 percent of Skype and eBay will retain 30 percent. As previously announced, eBay will receive approximately $1.9 billion in cash upon the completion of the sale and a note from the buyer in the principal amount of $125 million. The deal, which values Skype at $2.75 billion and is not subject to a financing condition, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2009.

'Skype will be well positioned to move forward under new owners with ownership and control over its core technology,' said eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe. 'At the same time, eBay continues to retain a significant stake in Skype and will benefit from its continued growth. We look forward to closing the deal and focusing on growing our core ecommerce and payments businesses.'

Commenting on the agreement on behalf of the investor group, Silver Lake Managing Director Egon Durban said: 'We are very pleased to have the litigation resolved. We remain confident in a great future for Skype, and we look forward to working with Niklas, Janus and the other investors as partners to help the company achieve its full potential.'

The investor group will no longer include Index Ventures, which has withdrawn from participation. Commenting on its decision to withdraw, Danny Rimer of Index Ventures, said: 'We are pleased that Skype will now be able to put litigation behind it, and we wish Josh Silverman, his team and the Skype investors well in continuing to grow a great business. Although Skype has the potential to be a great investment, the deal terms changed for Index such that it no longer matches our investment criteria and thus we have decided not to participate in the transaction.'
About eBay Inc.

Founded in 1995, eBay Inc.

Unified Communications and Virtual Collaboration Drive Public Sector Initiatives

Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ] has recently won significant public sector deals in several countries across the Asia Pacific region that cover a range of emerging networking technologies including Unified Communications (UC), Ethernet Routing Switches, contact center deployments and virtual collaboration environments.

Governments are traditionally conservative in their technology buying patterns with intense scrutiny on technology decisions and long buying cycles. Nortel's continued growth in the government sector is a clear indicator of the industry's confidence in Nortel's technology and its long term ability to meet customer needs.

Nortel has seen recent success with public sector investments in Australia and New Zealand , Greater China, India , South East Asia and Japan . Central and local government departments, healthcare institutions, educational establishments, court systems, tax offices, energy and transport network providers have all upgraded or deployed new communications environments as the region's central services have dramatically improved the way in which they communicate both internally and with their external stakeholders such as citizens, suppliers and other government departments.

The government court systems in two of the region's most populous cities have invested in Nortel Unified Communications and Ethernet Routing Switch solutions. There are changing demands within modern courts, as court employees are required to be available to their clients and co-workers anytime, anywhere. This has created a high demand for end-to-end UC technologies, including full 10GE backbone support to the desktop, and leading edge UC applications. In one instance, the court was able to streamline its operations by deploying a powerful and secure data network from Nortel to support a centralized judicial system database.

In education, trials and deployments of Nortel's virtual world application known as web.alive are providing an immersive learning experience for students in both primary school and university environments. Web.alive is a virtual world software application that provides a network secured virtual world platform for collaboration, assisted virtual learning and training applications. The solution allows education providers to adapt teaching methods to the modern communications-rich world, enhancing student attention, engagement and retention. This v irtual world collaboration environment is helping learning centers deal with one of the major drawbacks of other communication technologies: the ability to give users a 'real-life' experience that is more interactive and intuitive. It is another example of how Nortel's technology is supporting the learning needs of students across the region – with other major educational deployments announced in recent times in Australia, India, Japan and South East Asia. And learning centers across the region are now looking to technology solutions as a way of safeguarding educational continuity in the face of the continued threat of a more severe swine flu pandemic.

With Nortel's unified communications solution in place, employees at Porirua City Council in New Zealand are now more accessible to their colleagues, suppliers and customers whether they are in the office or performing their duties off-site – meaning enhanced productivity and increased efficiency. The solution also allows Porirua City Council to address the unique needs of its mobile workforce, which forms over 30% of the organization and which has previously had to manage a variety of systems to stay in touch. The new multimedia contact center solution, which enables UC capabilities such as integrated voice, email, fax and instant messaging, will drive up customer service quality on offerings such as holiday programs and inspection bookings, with a focus on increased speed and an enhanced user experience.

In India , Nortel has supported the huge investment in new airport infrastructure across the country with significant voice and data solutions, together with ongoing managed service deals, in a number of the country's new international airports, including those in Mumbai, Bangalore , Delhi and Hyderabad .

And in the healthcare sector, Nortel's solutions are helping speed patient discharge procedures, improve staff efficiency, enable better communications for a mobile workforce, and improve the quality of patient care. Agile clinical communications use many of the voice and data networks components that already exist in a hospital to connect the disparate systems, people and processes in order to maximize return on investment in clinical systems and infrastructure. Healthcare providers and teaching hospitals from Singapore to Japan are relying on Nortel's solutions to support their critical communications needs.

EXAMPLES OF HOW NORTEL'S SOLUTIONS ARE SUPPORTING PUBIC SECTOR INITIATIVES

    * New Zealand Public Service Association Gets Unified With Nortel and Gen-i - The New Zealand Public Service Association (PSA), New Zealand 's largest union with more than 57,000 registered members, expects to save up to 18 percent annually on call fees by migrating to a unified communications network from Nortel, Microsoft and implementation partner Gen-i. The solution gives PSA new functionality - such as unified messaging and presence - that allows operators to instantly 'see' the status of their colleagues and know exactly how to reach them, be it by phone or e-mail. The system also creates a single collection point for voicemails for all staff so no message goes unanswered.
* Taiwan Post Secures Business Continuity with Nortel Metro Ethernet Soluion - Taiwan Post, the largest postal, banking and insurance services provider in Taiwan , ensures customers will continue to be served and catastrophic failure to business operations averted in the event of disaster through a Nortel Metro Ethernet solution. Taiwan Post is ensuring business continuity with Metro Ethernet technology by enabling real-time information backup, access and recovery.
* Nortel Metro Ethernet Solution Helps Shanghai Metro Line 1 Trains Run on Time - With the Nortel Metro Ethernet solution in place, CBDTS will transmit information relating to wireless access systems, electronic monitoring, digital television and broadcasting, including comprehensive network monitoring and alerting tools. All operational and management information - voice, data and video - will be securely and accurately transmitted and monitored, ensuring seamless communications among train staff and access to the PIS (Passenger Information System) at all times.
* Nortel Provides Network Infrastructure for Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 - The Commonwealth Youth Games 2008, held in Pune , India from October 12 to 18, ran on a next-generation data network infrastructure set up by Nortel. The always-on, highly available network supporting 1,000 users, ran multimedia applications including real-time schedule updating, statistical analysis, resource coordination and media coverage helping ensure the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 ran smoothly.
* Japan 's Kyushu University Hospital has improved patient care by fostering staff collaboration over a new medical information network based on Nortel's clinical-grade Healthcare Solutions portfolio. And in Taiwan , the wireless Taiwan Mobile Healthcare Services give Taipei-based doctors virtual access to patient medical records, high-quality diagnostic images and video, and other innovative connectivity services.
* The University of the East (UE) in the Philippines has selected Nortel to help upgrade its information technology infrastructure and to boost the performance of all its computerized and web applications systems. With this system, UE students, faculty and personnel can access UE's centralized database enabling quicker, easier, and more efficient academic, financial and administrative transactions.
* Australia 's renowned RMIT University has upgraded its Nortel data network to support new, high-bandwidth services such as media streaming, YouTube feeds and videoconferencing for staff and students across 220 campus locations. The data network allows the University to drive high-bandwidth media streaming applications across its 12,500 PCs without affecting the performance of business-critical communications and media-intense research applications.
* The Victorian Education and Research Network (VERNet) has deployed a Nortel Metro Ethernet Solution to significantly boost network capacity to provide member institutions with 'always on' high-speed broadband connectivity. This allows more than 100 research and education institutions in the state of Victoria to introduce services such as real-time, high-definition video broadcasts, offsite disaster recovery and connections to radio telescopes.
* National University of Malaysia Unleashes Student Learning With Nortel - Formed to deliver an innovative education with roots in traditional knowledge and culture, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM) is expanding its online usage by introducing a range of online applications including e-learning, network-intensive research applications, VoIP, IPTV and more. These applications empower students and faculty to teach and learn in collaborative new ways, and their successful deployment provides an important competitive differentiator for universities.

QUOTE

François Lançon, leader, enterprise, Nortel Asia/EMEA

'Government agencies and departments face their very own set of business, policy and network technology challenges. Nortel is working with governments and public sector institutions across the Asia Pacific region to improve communications and collaboration, helping governments in their quest to better serve citizens, businesses and their community, and protecting government information, critical infrastructure and key assets. '

Peter van der Burg, Manager, Information Systems, Porirua City Council

'The key driver in engaging Nortel through its partner Gen-i was that the time had come to update our existing Nortel PABX – which no longer had the capacity to serve the growing communication needs of some of our new sites. Nortel helped us analyze our current and future communications needs and provided us with a clear development roadmap. We now have a platform in place that will provide us with a fully unified communications solution to service the ever changing needs of the community.'

'As a first step, the new technology is already helping to provide a better workplace environment that we think will be instrumental in both retaining and attracting new staff. Providing a way of measuring and improving our customer service performance will allow us to develop a more proactive approach, bringing us closer to our customers and their needs. Future services such as federated instant messaging and the ability to link communications into our other business processes will enable us to meet and exceed the expectations of all those who interface with the Council.'

About Nortel

Nortel delivers communications capabilities that make the promise of Business Made Simple a reality for our customers. Our next-generation technologies, for both service provider and enterprise networks, support multimedia and business-critical applications.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced a new hosted enterprise search product, Google Commerce Search™, to power online retail stores and e-commerce websites with the speed and accuracy customers expect from Google™. While e-commerce has advanced significantly in the past 15 years, search technology has been a barrier to online retail growth. The average online retailer conversion rate is just three percent[1] but could potentially be five to ten times higher.[2] Commerce Search will help retail website stores reach their full potential as commercial hubs by improving the shopping experience for customers and the associated conversion rates for retailers.

Google Commerce Search brings retailers:

    * Ultra-fast speed and accuracy, by leveraging Google's platform to provide sub-second response time to customer queries. Commerce Search also uses proprietary ranking technology to analyze the products in each data feed and serve the most relevant match. High quality, lightening-fast search increases conversions, as customers can quickly find specific products without having to navigate complex hierarchies on a website.

    * E-commerce-specific search features, like parametric search, sorting, spell checker, stemming, and synonym suggestions. These features allow users to easily refine their searches. Retail-specific features like product promotions and product boost allow administrators to fine-tune their marketing approach in real-time and maximize conversions. The rich Commerce Search API also allows retailers to fully customize the search experience on their website.

    * Deployment and scaling ease, because Commerce Search is hosted by Google and fully based in the cloud. Retailers can implement the tool very quickly and don't need to worry about maintenance. Using the hosted Google platform also allows retailers to scale without concern for seasonal peaks or valleys.

    * Integration with Google tools, like Google Analytics™ and Google Product Search™. Retailers can measure changing conversion rates through Commerce Search integration with Google Analytics on their website. E-commerce vendors benefit from providing a single feed of their catalog items to power Google Commerce Search for their website store and for indexing on Google Product Search. This helps retailers reduce costs and increase consistency across their inventory.

"We're excited to bring Google Commerce Search to market in time for the holidays," said Dave Girouard, president, Google Enterprise. "To date the technology powering retail website stores has not kept pace with innovation in search. Google Commerce Search will help customers find accurate results extremely fast, to the benefit of retailers and customers alike.'"

Birkenstock USA has implemented Google Commerce Search on one of their online properties and found it made an immediate impact on their business.

"'Google Commerce Search is improving user satisfaction -- bounce rates have decreased and we're seeing more return customers,' said Jeff Kilmer, COO, Birkenstock USA. 'The search results are ultra-fast, so customers more easily find the specific products they're looking for. We deployed Google Commerce Search quickly and easily, and we've seen dramatic conversion improvement since implementation. It has also meant a better shopping experience for our customers, which is critical given the holiday season rush."

Better searching means better conversions and a better online shopping experience.

November 5, 2009 - North Hollywood, CA: At the ConnectWise Partner summit, taking place this week in Florida SADA Systems, Inc. (SADA) announced their new product, CloudToolKit. The CloudToolKit is a web-based application intended to provide Value Added Resellers (VARs) with a set of tools to be used in conjunction with cloud-based solutions such as Google Apps. SADA created value added tools and utilities found in the CloudToolKit to automatically handle user management, automatic account provisioning, and single sign-on. The CloudToolKit is not yet available for use, but will officially launch on November 16, 2009. Prior to the official launch, SADA is accepting registrations for interested VARs. SADA is offering attendees of the ConnectWise Partner Summit an exclusive registration offer. Those who sign up at the ConnectWise Partner Summit will receive their first year of service on CloudToolKit for free.

SADA was one of the original Google Enterprise partners in Google Apps. Since becoming a Google Apps Enterprise Partner SADA has had the opportunity to assist in the implementation of Google Apps for both educational and enterprise organizations. SADA has become one of the nation's leading providers of Google Apps implementations since becoming a partner in 2006. Project requirements for several implementations required the creation of custom tools to meet the needs of the client. These custom tools included utilities for the provisioning of accounts, synchronization with a client's existing identity management solution, and others. SADA realized an opportunity was available to help VARs grow their Cloud-based practice, while reducing their costs.

"There are millions of Small or Mid-size Businesses (SMBs) in the country," says Tony Safoian, president and CEO of SADA Systems, Inc. He adds, "Our goal is to ensure that, for every SMB, there is a skilled VAR to help them deploy cloud-based solutions that save them money." SADA is accepting registrations from interested VARs now, and the CloudToolKit officially launches later this month.

Bigmouthmedia has announced that it has formed a partnership with the Dutch search marketing agency Netsociety.

In a move that extends Europe's biggest independent digital marketing agency's reach into the Benelux region, bigmouthmedia and Netsociety have reached an agreement that will see the companies collaborate on a range of projects for international clients. Already working together on several key campaigns, the arrangement effectively extends both firms' geographical footprint at a stroke.

"We're delighted to have formed such a close working relationship with Netsociety. The two companies are very closely matched in terms of ethos, approach to market and customer base, so after working together on a number of extremely successful ventures in the past, forming a partnership made sound business sense," said Lyndsay Menzies, Group Chief Operations Officer at bigmouthmedia.

"While Netsociety's regional expertise will afford bigmouthmedia's clients improved access to the Dutch and Belgian markets, our extensive global operations will allow our partners to provide their existing clients with an expanded international offering."

Netsociety's view of the cooperation is similar. Managing Director Maurice Pothof said: "We have found an appropriate partner in bigmouthmedia. During the initial discussions we quickly discovered how similar bigmouthmedia's DNA was to Netsociety's, and realized that a strategic partnership would create opportunities for our current and potential Dutch clients with international ambitions.'

"We deliberately do not aspire to the European expansion of our company but unlike our competitors, continuously deepen our focus on our home market in the Benelux region. Our cooperation with BMM makes Netsociety one of the few search engine marketing agencies in the Netherlands that has full European coverage," he continued.

The newly formed partnership, which will see Netsociety offer clients in Holland and Belgium the extended range of digital marketing services available from bigmouthmedia's operations in 10 countries, is already off to a flying start.

Mountain View, Calif. – Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU) has completed its acquisition of Mint.com, a fast-growing provider of online personal finance services based in Mountain View, Calif. The transaction, announced Sept. 14, is valued at approximately $170 million and enhances Intuit's position as a leading provider of consumer, software-as-a-service offerings that connect customers across desktop, online and mobile.

Intuit and Mint.com together will help redefine personal finance, delivering innovative, easy-to-use online services that help consumers save and do more with their money. By integrating with Intuit, Mint.com quickly gains access to resources to accelerate both product development and growth.

It is expected that Mint.com's innovative technology will be available broadly to millions of Intuit customers, starting with TurboTax® products for the upcoming 2009 tax season. With future product integrations, Mint.com's unique 'ways to save' engine will help consumers and small businesses make the most of their money, while categorization algorithms will make financial management easier. Intuit also expects that the acquisition of Mint.com will offer Intuit's financial institution clients the ability to strengthen their online offerings and deliver more value to their customers.

With the transaction complete, Aaron Patzer, former CEO of Mint.com, becomes vice president and general manager of Intuit's personal finance group, responsible for Mint.com and all Quicken online, desktop and mobile offerings.

The combined team will continue to innovate and reinvent Intuit's personal finance business, building on the assets of both Mint.com and Quicken.

'As the leader of Intuit's new personal finance group, I'm looking forward to bringing together the best of Quicken and all we've learned at Mint.com to help people save and do more with their money,' said Patzer. 'We have an opportunity to leverage new technologies and new user-interface design principles to impact more than 10 million Quicken users. Together with Intuit's expertise in tax, bill-pay and banking, we can build powerful new online services that will make it easier for people to manage their money.'

Intuit will maintain both the Mint.com and Quicken brands, and continue to offer Quicken products. The company recently released Quicken 2010 Windows desktop and expects to release Quicken for Mac in early 2010. The current Mint.com service will remain free and becomes Intuit's primary online personal finance management solution offered directly to consumers.

'We're very excited about the future of personal finance,' said Dan Maurer, senior vice president and general manager of Intuit's Consumer Group. 'We're blending strong leadership, innovative technology, and the power of a well-known, trusted brand with a fresh user interface to create the next generation of personal finance offerings.'

Inclusive of the transaction, Intuit expects a reduction of approximately 2 cents to its fiscal year 2010 non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) diluted earnings per share and approximately 3 cents to its GAAP diluted earnings per share. Intuit does not expect the acquisition to have a material effect on fiscal year 2011 earnings.

— WebWireID107046 —

Banking / Financial Services

Business Announcements

Computer Software

Financial Markets

Internet Technology

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

New features, solution partners and trial activity showcases Acme Packet leadership
in enabling trusted, first-class RCS services for 3G IP radio access networks

RICH COMMUNICATION 2009, PARIS, FRANCE - Acme Packet®, Inc. (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced a series of new capabilities for its Net-Net® Session Director (SD) session border controller (SBC) in support of the GSMA Rich Communication Suite (RCS) and SIP-based interactive communication services for 3G mobile access networks. In addition, Acme Packet has proven interoperability with five RCS client and server solution partners, helping ensure rapid deployment of RCS services. Acme Packet SBCs will be used in seven RCS or related SIP messaging and presence service trials by tier 1 mobile service providers in multiple countries in Europe and Africa during the fourth quarter of 2009.

The RCS initiative is a GSMA-led program driven by service providers and communications equipment vendors that is defining the basis for an interoperable, rich communication experience. RCS services are a new set of SIP interactive services that can be offered over 3G radio access networks and across mobile service provider IP network borders. RCS aims to seamlessly unify the communications experience by integrating traditional mobile circuit-switched telephony with new interactive services such as presence, instant messaging and content sharing enabled by an enhanced address book of the mobile phone. RCS leverages the 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture and uses SIP signaling to establish sessions and exchange instant messages, presence information, files and video. Acme Packet is an Associate member of the GSMA and joined the RCS initiative in December 2008.

'Rich Communication Suite is an important foundation for mobile service providers to deliver differentiated services,' commented Diane Myers, directing analyst, with Infonetics Research. 'Acme Packet's newly introduced features illustrate the company's commitment to making RCS successful by enabling the delivery of SIP-based interactive communication services and the interconnection of mobile networks.'

SIP session control leadership strengthened with new RCS features and functions

Acme Packet's RCS solution features its Net-Net SD deployed at the access and interconnect borders of the SIP or IMS service network. Acme Packet SBCs provide critical control functions to deliver high-quality interactive communications—voice, video and multimedia sessions—over the 3G IP RAN. For RCS 2.0 services extended to Internet-connected laptops and PCs, the Net-Net Security Gateway provides authentication and IPsec encryption termination to connect these devices to the service core. Acme Packet's control functions satisfy requirements in five major areas—security, service reach maximization, service level agreement (SLA) assurance, revenue and cost optimization, and regulatory compliance. In IMS networks, Acme Packet SBCs perform the role of the P-CSCF and IMS-AGW for signaling and media control at the access border and the I-BCF and TrGW at the interconnect border.

As a result of the growing interest in RCS—including completed and pending lab and service trials in 2009—Acme Packet is enhancing its Net-Net Operating System (OS) with additional capabilities. Acme Packet Net-Net SBCs will be used at the access or interconnect border of seven RCS or RCS-like trials by tier 1 mobile service providers in Europe and Africa during the fourth quarter of 2009.

The new features significantly enhance the security and control functions for RCS service delivery and increase the capacity of both RCS application servers and Acme Packet SBCs. The specific enhancements to the Net-Net OS include:

    * Message Session Relay Protocol (MSRP) support
Acme Packet SBCs support MSRP for instant messaging and file sharing services as defined by the latest Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) specifications. This includes media support for MSRP server-based and MSRP peer-to-peer deployment models. The peer-to-peer model off-loads application servers, increasing their capacity.
* Denial-of-service attack protection and overload control for IM and presence
Acme Packet SBCs protect RCS and IMS server infrastructure from denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, misconfigured or misbehaving clients, and non-malicious overloads. This control includes per-SIP method throttling, SIP Method whitelists and signaling screening. This granular security capability ensures that both the SBC and RCS servers can continue to support legitimate subscribers in the presence of attack or overload.
* Differentiated, service-based routing policies for presence, IM, video and voice
Acme Packet SBCs enable service providers to route traffic differently for each RCS service—presence, IM, video and voice—to reduce capital and operational costs for deploying RCS services. This capability includes fine-grained control over the routing of each SIP method type including INVITE, REGISTER, PRACK, OPTIONS, INFO, SUBSCRIBE, NOTIFY, REFER, UPDATE, MESSAGE and PUBLISH.
* Session replication for lawful intercept of multimedia communication
Acme Packet SBCs will enable lawful intercept (LI) for all RCS services, helping service providers comply with relevant government regulations for these communication services. This support will include SIP-based presence information and video, and MSRP-based instant messaging using TCP transport. Acme Packet Net-Net SDs act as an intercept access point, replicating the session data and content for specific target subscribers. Acme Packet has proven interoperability with many leading LI Mediation Function vendors for provisioning and forwarding of relevant session data.
* Support for millions of subscribers and IM sessions
Acme Packet SBC solutions will scale to support millions of subscribers and their IM sessions. As each entry in a subscriber's 'buddy list' creates a SIP SUBSCRIBE-NOTIFY dialog, presence information can create significant SIP messaging traffic. Acme Packet has uniquely optimized the ability of its SBC to process these messages efficiently to cost-effectively scale the access and interconnect border for sharing presence information between RCS subscribers.

Solution partner interoperability expands

Acme Packet has expanded its Pinnacle Partner Program with tested solutions with five new RCS client and server partners. The Pinnacle Partner Program is an alliance program that formalizes Acme Packet's relationships with both complementary product partners and solution integration partners. It fosters technical and business collaboration to assure interoperability among best-of breed products and the delivery of seamless, best-of breed network solutions. Acme Packet has tested interoperability with these partners in vendor or customer labs in IMS and pre-IMS environments. The new RCS solution partner products include:

    * Aylus Networks' MediaShare
This platform provides real-time multimedia session management for video and content sharing to RCS-enabled phones and broadband endpoints. Live and recorded content can be shared to RCS clients as well as web portals and social media hubs such as Facebook using Aylus' RCS-compliant Application Server and Video MRF. Aylus' MediaShare and MediaCast solutions will be demonstrated at Acme Packet's Interconnect 2009 customer conference taking place November 8-11.
* Colibria's SIP/SIMPLE portfolio of SIP IM server, SIP Presence server and supporting XDMS server
These products are deployed in fixed, mobile and converged networks and can operate in pre-IMS and IMS environments to provide Rich Communication Suite, Enhanced Voice Solutions, and Push to Talk. Acme Packet SBCs and Colibria's SIP/SIMPLE servers are deployed or being trialed in multiple customer environments.
* eyeP Media eyeP Communicator
eyeP Media SA, a leading provider of SIP-based Telecommunications over IP (ToIP) software clients, develops and markets the eyeP Communicator softphone for Windows PC and mobile devices. Acme Packet and the eyeP Communicator are already deployed in a tier 1 European mobile operator for ToIP services and the two companies have successfully tested RCS interoperability.
* Mavenir mOne IM/presence server
The modular functional architecture of mOne provides presence, IM, media sharing and legacy messaging interworking services and core IMS components including I/S-CSCF functions. The joint Acme Packet-Mavenir solution is deployed in a tier 1 pan-European mobile service provider for a SIP messaging and presence application. Additionally, an Acme Packet SBC will provide access security and routing for Mavenir's RCS demonstration at Rich Communication 2009, November 4-5, in Paris.
* Movial Communicator
Movial Communicator PC for RCS provides a compelling and fully integrated end-user experience enabled with presence technology, including 1-to-1 chat, group chat, video calling, instant sharing of images or video during a voice call, and file transfer. Movial Communicator PC embodies the first extension of a complete solution for synchronized rich multimedia communication across handsets and computers. Movial Communicator Mobile is an RCS-ready suite of mobile applications with the same power as its PC counterpart. Six leading European operators have selected Movial Communicator solutions for their RCS trials. Acme Packet has proven interoperability with Movial in multiple VoIP and IMS commercial deployments.

'RCS is critical to enabling new services in today's increasingly competitive 3G mobile communications environment,' stated Seamus Hourihan, Acme Packet's vice president of marketing and product management. 'Given our proven solutions for delivering secure, high-quality and seamlessly interoperable IP interactive voice and video services, Acme Packet is well-positioned to help mobile service providers transform their 3G broadband networks into versatile platforms for delivering even richer communication services in terms of both functional and monetary value.'

About Acme Packet
Acme Packet, Inc.

Analysts Highlight 11 IT-Based Activities as Prime Candidates for Revamping During Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2009, 2-5 November, in Cannes, France

Cannes, France - As organisations begin to prepare for a return to business growth, many are finding themselves at a major crossroads at which they must decide whether to remain on their longstanding current path of performing IT activities or to go in a different direction, according to Gartner, Inc. Organisations that opt for the latter will have an opportunity to challenge all activities as they currently exist, choosing where to stay the course and where a different course of action makes sense.

'We are now within one of the rarest and most fleeting periods in business: nearing the bottom of a recession and before a return to growth,' said Ken McGee, vice president and Gartner fellow. 'We urge organisations to exploit this unusual opportunity to question the efficacy of their IT business practices and determine whether those practices warrant change. But they need to act now, by the time business growth returns, they will be far too busy, and it will simply be too late to change.'

Mr McGee presents his outlook for business and IT leaders to prepare for a return to business growth during Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2009, being held here through 5 November. He reveals 11 IT-based activities that are prime candidates for organisations to review for potential overhaul and advises organisations to consider the extreme approach to each activity, then consider the less extreme options, before finally deciding how to proceed. These recommendations are based on the results of various research findings from hundreds of client interactions.

Decision 1 - How to Modernise IT Infrastructure vis-à-vis Cloud Computing?
Extreme recommendation: Fund infrastructure modernisation only after you decide upon a cloud computing strategy.
Gartner said that by explaining today's request for infrastructure and operations (I&O) modernisation funding within the context of cloud computing in the future, executives are less likely to feel that they are paying twice for modernisation when cloud computing is officially adopted.

Decision 2 – How to Significantly Improve Budgeting?
Extreme recommendation: Replace existing budget methodologies with zero-based budgeting principles where every project request cites: (1) project name; (2) business unit executive; (3) one-time project implementation cost (operating and capital expenditures); (4) recurring annual cost and (5) business executive's signature.

Decision 3 – How to Become the CEO of IT?
Extreme recommendation: Hire an IT CFO, formally teach contract negotiation techniques and establish signing and agency authority list for vendors.
For decades, organisations have empowered IT associates to negotiate multimillion-dollar hardware, software and service contracts, even though those associates have never been formally trained in doing so. Gartner has long recommended the hiring of an IT CFO, as well as better training for IT associates involved in contract negotiation and tighter controls to limit unauthorised purchases.

Decision 4 – What IT Information Should You Disclose to Executives?
Extreme recommendation: Implement the procurement department and accounting department challenges immediately.
Those presenting contracts to executives for signing need to ensure that they are being transparent and clear. For example, they should have no qualms about including the following disclaimer on contracts presented for executive sign-off: "Before you sign, please note: The prices, terms and conditions in this contract are not the result of a competitive bidding process." The executive being asked to sign the contract will then be in a position to decide whether to put his or her name on it, equipped with the knowledge that it has not undergone the rigour of a competitive bidding process, or a comparison of prices prevailing in the marketplace.

Decision 5 – When Should IT Practitioners Leave the IT Organisation?
Extreme recommendation: Announce when key IT staffers with CIO aspirations will leave IT.
Gartner research has found that new CIOs for global 2000 companies must have served as managers or executives of departments or divisions other than IT. IT managers must decide when to encourage aspiring CIOs to leave IT to foster the pursuit of career goals in the wider organisation.

Decision 6 – Should You Support Cost Savings or Business Growth?
Extreme recommendation: Resolve how to simultaneously support cost-cutting efforts and business expansion.
As globalisation levels continue to grow, solving how to simultaneously support positive and negative growth will become one of the most complex never ending IT organisational challenges of the next decade.

Decision 7 – Current CIOs - Which IT Organisation Structures Work Best?
Extreme recommendation: End Tier one, two and three (T-1-2-3) support modules.
Unless abandoned, T-1-2-3 structures will continue to undermine the success of delivering new projects by interrupting developers to solve outages occurring in deployed systems.
UK businesses prioritise technology to overcome the downturn, says BT survey

Some 42 per cent of senior executives in large UK companies see investment in new technologies as one of their key priorities to achieve business growth and cut costs over the next year, according to new research released today by BT Global Services.

The independent survey of 300 board-level executives, commissioned by BT Global Services, shows that nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of senior executives at UK companies and government organisations believe that better use of technologies has had a role in fighting the recession over the past year.

Over two-thirds (68 per cent) of businesses now rank future investment in faster computer networks, flexible working and managed ICT services as priorities to become more efficient and cut costs in the next 18 months, alongside other key growth objectives, such as sales promotions, new product launches and better staff training.

More than a third of companies (37 per cent) plan to spend money on faster and more reliable network technology, in particular in the financial services industry where 52 per cent of institutions believe faster, low latency networks for trading and information sharing will give them competitive edge. A third of all companies surveyed also plan to spend money on flexible working technology as a route to sustainable financial success and helping them manage staffing and property needs.

Mark Quartermaine, President of BT Global Services UK Markets, said: 'What is encouraging is that this survey shows that many businesses in the UK feel they're on the start of the road to recovery. The way they do business has already changed significantly, but the signs are there that continued investment in new technology and processes will help them do more with less and remain competitive on the global stage.'

Despite the investment plans, some 83 per cent of the managers polled are preparing to do more with less to make sure their business stays competitive on the global stage, believing that some of the technology investments they have made during the downturn are putting them in a strong position for recovery.

'The road to recovery is not the same for all industries,' said Graham Opie at research firm, Vanson Bourne. 'There is a wide range of opinions and approaches across different industries. Whilst over three-quarters (78 per cent) of public sector leaders feel the recovery will be slow, less than a third (31 per cent) of their private sector counterparts agreed.'

Retail managers showed the most optimism, with 70 per cent of respondents confident about their prospects next year.

In terms of spending, more than half of managers in the financial services (60 per cent) and transport sectors (52 per cent) said their companies needed to invest in technology in order to grow. Marketing spend is a high priority across the board, particularly in the financial services sector, where 76 per cent of executives said it would help their businesses to grow.

Meanwhile in the logistics industry, respondents felt they had weathered the storm well, with 39 per cent suggesting that their business didn't suffer at all. Logistics firms also had the widest spread in terms of spending plans, with more than half prioritising investment in training (51 per cent), promotions (51 per cent), product and service development (53 per cent) and marketing (57 per cent).

— WebWireID107005 —

Advertising / Marketing

Financial Markets

Internet Technology

Mobile Communications

Telecommunications

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

XTM chosen by AMD to optimise their DITA localisation process

Gerrards Cross, UK – November 4th 2009 – XML-INTL's translation tool XTM Suite has been selected by processor design company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for integration with their DITA-based content management system. This is a strategic technology choice, as AMD seeks to reduce their global localization costs by using XTM Suite. By selecting XTM, AMD will benefit from a fully integrated translation management suite which will enhance their control over the localization process.

The XTM Suite delivers a complete range of tools for the translator, reviewer and project manager via the web. In AMD's case, the XTM Suite will be tightly integrated with their existing Content Management System, the DITA CMS Framework from IXIASOFT. XML Int'l is working on integrating the XTM Suite tools with this CMS to provide its users access to powerful translation memory tools directly within the system. As a result, AMD will be able to maximize their reuse strategy and continue to drive down localization costs.

Global product releases depend on consistent, localized product documentation that is produced on-time and on-budget. XTM is XML-based, fundamentally using industry-led Open Standards instead of the proprietary file formats common to other translation systems. Combined with AMD's CMS system, the XTM Suite will facilitate much greater leverage of the company's existing Translation Memory assets, and its workflow will reduce the amount of time AMD QA staff spends administrating work with Localization Service Providers – all potentially resulting in direct cost savings for AMD.

'We chose XTM to integrate with our CMS because it is an XML based solution, non-proprietary and that they are willing and excited to work with our CMS vendor,' said Keith Schengili-Roberts, the Manager for Documentation & Localization at AMD.
'XTM's cutting-edge, standards based translation management technology is designed to allow us to streamline our localization process. We spent the better part of a year assessing potential vendors, and we found XTM Suite to be the most cost effective solution for our needs.'

'We are extremely proud to be supplying AMD with our translation tool, XTM. It is a positive endorsement of our technology that they selected it for the critical job of product and engineering documentation localization. Managing localized content directly from within the DITA CMS Framework makes perfect sense as it improves content reuse and ensures an efficient delivery of translated content' said Elliot Nedas, Business Development Manager, at XML-INTL.

About XML-INTL
XML-INTL Ltd is a leader in web 2.0 XML based translation technology. Their modular translation Suite XTM is ideally suited to integration with Content Management Systems.

— WebWireID107002 —

Computer Software

Internet Technology

Publishing / Information Services

Semiconductors

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Read NewsGator's Christy Schoon weekly at http://blogs.newsgator.com/everyday_enterprise_20/

DENVER – Even as businesses embrace it with zeal, Enterprise 2.0 is often derided as a buzzword enveloped in ivory-tower abstractions that obfuscate as much as enlighten.

That's why NewsGator (www.newsgator.com) today launched a new blog from the trenches of Enterprise 2.0 – yes, there are trenches – called 'Everyday Enterprise 2.0,' authored by Christy Schoon, the company's director of Enterprise 2.0 consulting. Read it at http://blogs.newsgator.com/everyday_enterprise_20/.

'I work with real businesses every day that use Enterprise 2.0 to generate concrete results,' says Schoon. 'My customers don't want to argue about what Enterprise 2.0 is, whether it's the right term, or whether it even exists. They want to know how other companies have succeeded, what they themselves can do to achieve the same benefits, and most importantly, how to do it. So I'm going to write in plain English about everyday Enterprise 2.0 from my own on-the-ground perspective working with living, breathing social computing champions at Fortune 500 companies.'

Everyday Enterprise 2.0's first and second posts are: 'Why this blog?' and 'Pimp my site.' Upcoming posts will focus on:
• Training 2.0
• Proofs of concept
• Insights from the upcoming Enterprise 2.0 Conference
• Community manager preparation, and
• The notion of 'adoption for adoption's sake.'

Schoon welcomes comments and links to other practical resources so the blog can become a community for sharing real-world enterprise social computing experiences among peers.

Schoon has 16 years of experience in Internet, business and IT, with stops at InfoWorld, CNET and Intuit before NewsGator. The company has one million paid users of its enterprise social computing software, Social Sites, and Schoon works directly with thousands of them. Businesspeople frequently ask her where to start on Enterprise 2.0, and she has three standard recommendations: 1) read Ross Dawson's sensible, plainspoken book 'Implementing Enterprise 2.0' http://fwd4.me/1qI; 2) read the Nielsen Norman Group's report 'Enterprise 2.0: Social Software on Intranets' ($298, http://fwd4.me/1qJ); and 3) if your company has at least 10,000 employees, join the 2.0 Adoption Council http://fwd4.me/1qK.

About NewsGator Technologies, Inc.
NewsGator Technologies helps enterprises and media companies leverage social computing solutions to deliver real business value. The company's enterprise social networking and widget services are in use by hundreds of the world's most recognized brands, including Biogen Idec, CBS, CNN, Discovery, National Geographic, Procter & Gamble and USA Today. NewsGator Social Sites and Enterprise Server give enterprises better ways to collaborate, share content, expand employee knowledge and improve productivity.

Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Automates Data and System Protection, Speeds Recovery of Entire Systems

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the availability of Backup Exec System Recovery 2010, a complete data and system backup and recovery solution for small businesses. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 automates the backup process of an entire system or individual files and folders without disrupting user productivity, and enables quick restores to the same or dissimilar hardware, virtual machines or remote locations. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 introduces new support of the latest Microsoft operating systems, including Windows 7, Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, easing the transition to the new platforms and ensuring continued protection during migration. With the new release, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery will also support Linux operating systems later this year.

'Today's small businesses need the peace of mind that only comes with a cost-effective, reliable backup and recovery solution that will protect their information and systems to minimize downtime and avoid disaster,' said Pat Hanavan, vice president, Symantec Information Management Group. 'Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 provides small businesses with affordable protection so they can easily recover what they need, when they need it and to whatever physical or virtual environment they want.'

For small businesses, backup and recovery is both a challenge and a concern. According to a recent survey¹ of 1,650 small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and their customers, there is a large discrepancy between how SMBs perceive their disaster readiness and their actual level of preparedness. According to the survey, SMBs noted they were confident in their level of disaster preparedness (84 percent), but their practices reveal that this confidence is unwarranted.

The average SMB has experienced three outages within the past 12 months, with the leading causes being virus or hacker attacks, power outages or natural disasters. This is alarming as almost half report they do not yet have a plan to deal with such disruptions. While most companies deploy some form of backup, only one in five (23 percent) back up on a daily basis and 40 percent back up monthly or less. The survey also demonstrates small businesses that lose data due to disaster also lose sales and customers.

Backup Exec System Recovery provides small businesses with a single, easy-to-use solution for backup and recovery. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 now includes Symantec's patent-pending Granular Recovery Option, previously optional. This capability allows small businesses to back up an entire file server, desktop, laptop, virtual server or critical application server, such as Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft SharePoint, and then restore granular items such as individual Exchange emails, SharePoint documents or individual files in minutes. Backups can be saved to a variety of disk storage devices and can be copied to an off-site location or secondary disk device for disaster recovery purposes.

In addition, Backup Exec System Recovery adds new support for the latest virtual environments, including VMware vSphere 4.0, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, and Citrix XenServer 5.x. This new support ensures that the more technical small businesses that integrate virtualization into their IT environments can convert physical systems to virtual machines through Backup Exec System Recovery for disaster recovery or testing purposes.

Organizations can easily manage their backup environment at local and remote locations from a single, centralized console with Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution, available with Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 at no additional charge. Channel partners can benefit from this feature as it provides them with complete remote control over their customers' backup environments through a VPN connection, allowing them to create, edit and distribute backup jobs, policies, installation packages, upgrade packages and client settings and enables remote recovery of volumes and/or complete systems. In addition, the Backup Exec System Recovery product line includes editions that backup and recover Microsoft Windows Servers, Microsoft Windows Small Business Servers as well as desktops and laptops.

Click to Tweet: @Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 provides backup and recovery for small businesses across Windows and Linux

Supporting Quotes

'Small businesses today have to do more with less and are looking for simple, affordable solutions like Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to handle their IT backup and recovery needs,' said Gene Bumgardner, Director of Technical Services, OFM Computer Systems, Inc. 'Symantec's innovative approach to backup and recovery gives us the opportunity to help our small business customers protect and manage their information and systems while allowing us to grow our business and improve services revenue.'

'As a small business and an IT consulting company, we rely on Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to protect and manage our information and systems, as well as our clients' systems,' said Andrew Chic, systems administrator, Prophet Business Group Ltd. 'We are confident that in the event of a disaster or outage, Symantec will recover our information or complete systems within minutes so there is no disruption to our business.'

Availability and Pricing

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 is available now for a suggested price of $795 USD per server and $69 USD per desktop.

Ribbit Mobile merges phones with the Internet to provide a back-up phone online, making it easier to manage calls, messages and phones

Ribbit Corporation today announced the launch of a beta trial of Ribbit Mobile, a free web-based service that provides a new way for any mobile phone user to manage calls, messages and phones, whilst also providing them with a virtual online version of their mobile phone.

Ribbit Mobile enables mobile phone users to answer their mobile phone on the internet, make calls using their mobile caller ID via the internet, read voicemails as email or SMS text and route calls to be answered on any phone. As Ribbit Mobile is a cloud-based service, it works with virtually all mobile phones, not just smart phones.

The service is the second cloud computing application to be launched in the UK using the Ribbit communications technology, following the launch of Ribbit for Salesforce from BT Business in April this year. BT acquired the Silicon Valley company in July 2008, signalling the company's entry into the cloud services market.

JP Rangaswami, Managing Director, BT Innovate & Design and Chairman, Ribbit said: 'Mobile phones and the Internet are vital communications tools, but they haven't worked well together… until now'

Ted Griggs, Chief Executive of Ribbit, said: 'There are more than 60 million mobile phones in the UK today, and the Ribbit Mobile service works with most of them. You don't need a new number or a new device, and you don't have to download software or sign a contract. You simply activate Ribbit on your phone and go.'

'We built Ribbit Mobile for people who always want to be connected and not restricted by the capabilities of their mobile device says Ted Griggs. 'As long as you have Internet connection, you will always be able to make and receive calls and get your messages, even if you don't have your phone with you.'

Ribbit Mobile was built on the Ribbit Platform – a robust, scalable platform that enables Ribbit's extensive developer community to create new and innovative voice applications and services to extend the features of Ribbit Mobile. As more applications get added, the service becomes even richer. 'In the future, no one will buy a mobile phone without a cloud backup,' says Ted Griggs. 'Ribbit Mobile represents the first step in that future.'

Notes to Editors:
• Those wanting to try out the service can register their interest and request a trial invite at the following URL: www.ribbitmobile.co.uk and click 'sign up now' – then fill out the form to request an account. Ribbit will begin provisioning accounts in the first quarter of 2010

— WebWireID106953 —

Internet Technology

Mobile Communications

Telecommunications

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds
