TomTom HD Traffic to provide live traffic feed across Amscreen convenience store network

TomTom and Amscreen, the digital signage company today announce a sponsorship deal to provide millions of motorists with the most up-to-date traffic information thanks to TomTom's HD Traffic.

The deal will see TomTom become the exclusive provider of live traffic feeds across Amscreen's digital signage network. The first convenience store network to feature TomTom's HD Traffic on its close proximity signage units will be BP.

The BP network utilises Amscreen's bespoke 'plug and play' technology, which allows screen content to be remotely updated without the need for any extra cabling or IT input, on site. Available at BP's network of over 300 company owned sites, TomTom's HD Traffic technology uses data from travelling Vodafone users, making it possible to monitor, in real time, the actual speed of millions of cars across the road network. This data is merged with anonymous real-time GPS data from connected TomTom customers and information from traffic authorities, road operators and commercial third parties to provide customers with the most accurate and precise traffic information.

Damian Woodward, VP Sales & Marketing, TomTom commented: 'The Amscreen network provides us with the perfect way to assist over 7 million motorists per week. Our HD Traffic technology enables us to provide these customers with traffic information featuring unprecedented accuracy and quality.'

The deal with TomTom comes at a time when the Digital Out of Home market is buoyant, with the size of market ever-growing and expected to quadruple to a worth of £248 million by 2012.

Simon Sugar added: 'We're delighted to announce this deal with TomTom. As the market leaders in portable navigation systems they offer first class traffic information and we see a great synergy with the Amscreen digital signage network. We look forward to working with them further as we expand our network over the coming months.'

For more information on Amscreen, go to www.amscreen.co.uk

— WebWireID107172 —

Automotive

Business Announcements

Electronics

Mobile Communications

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Fundamentals for the industry are positive, mainly driven by the growing demand for broadband and connectivity. Ericsson has over the past year developed a new brand strategy to leverage opportunities and meet challenges to come in the next few years.

"We will move from traditional telecom to IP, we see how we move from being a hardware to a software business and we will see an evolution and modernization of the networks rather than the past years vast rollouts of new networks", says in-coming President and CEO Hans Vestberg. "This requires us to change our ways of working as well as business and engagement models. Our ability to develop competence, behavior and position are key success factors and we are repositioning our brand to capture these new opportunities."

The brand stands for a company's capabilities, strategic direction and differentiation from competition. It shows the direction to the market and its employees.

"Our brand must not only speak about our ambitions, but drive our ambitions", says Cesare Avenia. "My role will be to build confidence and help facilitate change in the organization. I will focus on guiding our colleagues in this transformation to secure long-term value growth."

Hans Vestberg says; "Cesare's experience from many part of Ericsson and deep knowledge of our customer needs makes him well suited to head this important task. He has an inspiring management style and I look forward to welcoming him in our Group Management Team."

Cesare Avenia joined Ericsson in 1994 when he was appointed marketing manager for division Mobile Systems. In parallel, he has been teaching industrial marketing at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome. During the years with Ericsson he has hold different managerial positions, like head of Division Switching and Network Systems in Italy, head of Region Middle East and Africa, head of market unit Middle East and in 2003 he was appointed head of Ericsson Italy. He has a degree in Electronics Engineering. He is married and has two children.

Notes to editors:
Cesare Avenia's bio and photo are attached.

Ericsson's multimedia content is available at the broadcast room: www.ericsson.com/broadcast_room

Ericsson is the world's leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators.

Seoul.- Yong Nam, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Electronics (LG), deliv-ered a special speech today under the theme of 'Korean and Korea, Inc: Past, Present and Fu-ture' at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. In the speech, he focused on the rapid growth of Korean companies and highlighted three key chal-lenges facing Korean firms going forward.

Earlier in September, Mr. Nam accepted the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship on behalf of LG Electronics employees at a ceremony held in Seoul. Lee H. Hamilton, President and Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, government officials, scholars and members of economic organizations were present in the audience. Mr. Nam joins a select group of high-profile figures who have spoken at the Woodrow Wilson International Center.

'Korea's GDP per capita is now approximately USD20,000, which is remarkable growth from only USD100 in the 1960s,' Mr. Nam said. 'Total GDP has also increased six times in the nearly four decades since 1970 and the rate of growth is ranked second only after China in Asia.'

Mr. Nam said sales from Korea's ten biggest companies amounted to almost USD200 billion, with half being generated overseas. One-third of the employees of Korea's ten biggest compa-nies are located outside Korea. LG, for example, generates 85 percent of its total sales from 160 countries other than Korea while 56,000 employees -- two-thirds of LG's 84,000 global em-ployees -- are located outside Korea. Since CEO Nam took over the top office, LG Electronics has appointed six non-Korean C-suite executives. The number of non-Korean executives at LG stands at 10 percent, the highest among Korean companies.

LG CEO Nam warned against complacency and suggested three priorities for Korean companies to secure global leadership against the backdrop of Chinese or Indian powerhouses: improve-ment in labor productivity, expansion into services and solutions and investment in human re-sources. He emphasized that manufacturing-focused business portfolios should move towards services- and solutions–oriented models as new products are launched and existing products are commoditized.

'We won't stop globalizing the process, system or organization,' CEO Nam closed.

— WebWireID107043 —

Business Announcements

Consumer Electronics

Electronics

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

High Integrated Transceiver - Extensive Choice of Memory Variants

KAWASAKI (Japan), DUESSELDORF and DORTMUND (Germany) - ELMOS Semiconductor AG (FSE: ELG) and NEC Electronics (TSE: 6723) today announced the availability of its four new single-chip IO-Link solutions for IO-Link slave applications. This project is based on a close cooperation with TMG-Karlsruhe. The new IO-Link solutions combine NEC Electronics' All Flash™ 78K0R 16-bit microcontroller and ELMOS IO-Link transceiver, with integrated IO-Link slave protocol stack in a single package. The part numbers differ according to their flash memory capacity; uPD78F8040 offers 32 kilobytes (KB), uPD78F8041 offers 64 KB, uPD78F8042 offers 96 KB, and uPD78F8043 offers 128 KB of flash memory.

IO-Link is the preferred standard serial digital communications protocol used for sensors and actuators in industrial automation systems. IO-Link offers the following advantages:

    * Compatible integration into existing fieldbus or Industrial Ethernet environment
* Process, parameter and diagnosis data in one cable
* compatible cabling to existing sensor communication

One key advantage of using the IO-Link slave protocol stack offered with the NEC Electronics' solutions is that minor upgrades could be included if the IO-Link specification is enhanced, significantly reducing development time and effort. Alternatively, designers can opt to develop and maintain their own software stacks. The ELMOS transceiver integrates significant analogue components, which enable system designers to eliminate use of additional external components and develop a complete IO-Link slave product at low cost.

NEC Electronics provides extensive product range to include a choice of memory variants all in the same device package. Developers can choose from 4 pin-compatible memory configurations in an 8mm x 8mm 56-pin QFN package making it easy to switch to a larger memory if more software is needed. Flash sizes from 32 KB to 128 KB will be available. This also allows developers to use the same PCB for multiple designs even though different amounts of software may be required. A 32 KB device can easily be replaced by a 128 KB device without having to re-design the PCB.

To support system designers in using the IO-Link single-chip solution, NEC Electronics and ELMOS can also provide a comprehensive development kit at lower cost than most of the other kits in the market. The 78K0R Link-It! kit is available now.

The IO-Link market is now beginning to show real promise and ELMOS and NEC Electronics are working with several vendors some of whom are already engaged in development projects. ELMOS and NEC Electronics are well placed to enable system designers to quickly and easily achieve differentiated designs using the only single-chip IO-Link solution available on the market

Availability

Samples of the new single-chip IO-Link solutions are available now. Mass production of the new devices is slated to begin in April 2010, with expected monthly mass production of 500,000 units. (Availability is subject to change without notice.)

More information about ELMOS and NEC Electronics' solutions for the industrial automation market can be found at http://www.elmos.de/german/produkte/know-how/io-link.html or http://www.eu.necel.com/iolink

(Remark)

All Flash is a trademark or registered trademark of NEC Electronics in Japan, America, Singapore, Hong Kong, UK, German, and China.
Multi-year, multi-million Euro agreement will seek to develop innovative solutions for chronic patients - - Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) and Achmea Healt...

Multi-year, multi-million Euro agreement will seek to develop innovative solutions for chronic patients

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) and Achmea Health, the largest healthcare insurer in the Netherlands, today signed a five-year agreement to cooperate in the development of innovative care solutions aimed at increasing the independence of chronic patients. The initiative will focus on enabling chronic disease sufferers to better manage their health at home, reducing the need for hospital stays.

Diabetes cases in adults are predicted to more than double globally from 143 million in 1997 to 300 million by 2025[1], and without action an estimated 388 million people will die from chronic diseases in the next 10 years[2]. Globally, demand for care is growing faster than the number of healthcare practitioners, resulting in the need for fewer care professionals to handle more patients, in less time and at a lower cost.

The agreement between Philips and Achmea Health will seek to address this challenge by developing technology solutions that remotely monitor health and provide guidance and motivation to patients in the home to enable them to better manage their own health, ultimately reducing the need for intervention by healthcare professionals. The initiative will seek input from all stakeholders involved in chronic patient care, including healthcare professionals, informal carers and patients.

'As the largest healthcare insurer in the Netherlands, the insights of patients and healthcare professionals captured by Achmea Health are an extremely important tool for us in our efforts to develop solutions that will genuinely meet people's needs,' commented Walter van Kuijen, general manager Home Monitoring, Philips Healthcare. 'For more than 100 years Philips has been a trusted brand in both hospitals and homes. Due to this unique combination of expertise we are well positioned to develop home healthcare solutions that are valued by clinician and patient alike.'

'We want to ensure that people with chronic diseases are firmly in the driving seat when it comes to managing their own health. This will not only benefit patients: by reducing the number of hospital stays and shortening those that do take place, the burden on the healthcare system can also be reduced. In the long-term we believe that this approach will enable us to reduce the costs of health insurance for our customers,' said Roelof Konterman, chairman of the Board of Management at Achmea Health.

Previously, Philips and Achmea Health worked together on the 'HartMotief' study, which examined the possibilities for increasing self-management among heart failure patients. Following successful results, the Philips Motiva homecare system was introduced to the Dutch market, and the system is now fully integrated into treatment programs at nine hospitals in the country.

The agreement with Achmea Health is Philips' latest development in home healthcare in Europe. The company has been and continues to be involved in several home healthcare research projects in Europe, including:

· TENS-HMS study (2005) – The largest telecare study conducted to-date, conducted in conjunction with leading cardiologists from the UK, Netherlands and Germany

· HartMotief study (2006) – Evaluation of Telehealth in the Netherlands, conducted with Achmea Health

[1] World Health Organization, '50 facts: Global health situation and trends 1955-2025,' WHO online, World health report 1998 press kit

[2] World Health Organization, 'Solving the chronic disease problem,' WHO online, 2005

About Royal Philips Electronics
Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) is a diversified Health and Well-being company, focused on improving people's lives through timely innovations. As a world leader in healthcare, lifestyle and lighting, Philips integrates technologies and design into people-centric solutions, based on fundamental customer insights and the brand promise of 'sense and simplicity'. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Philips employs more than 118,000 employees in more than 60 countries worldwide. With sales of EUR 26 billion in 2008, the company is a market leader in cardiac care, acute care and home healthcare, energy efficient lighting solutions and new lighting applications, as well as lifestyle products for personal well-being and pleasure with strong leadership positions in flat TV, male shaving and grooming, portable entertainment and oral healthcare.

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced that its SureSelect Human All Exon Kit is now available for the Applied Biosystems SOLiD System. Applied Biosystems is part of Life Technologies Corp. The kit enables target enrichment prior to next-generation DNA sequencing.

The SureSelect Human All Exon Kit extends the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the SureSelect Target Enrichment System to studies of all human exons, a region totaling approximately 38 Mb. Available in kit sizes appropriate for studies comprised of a few to several thousand samples, Agilent's in-solution-based SureSelect Target Enrichment System easily scales up and is well-suited for automation.

"We're excited to extend our next-generation sequencing target enrichment portfolio even further with an optimized protocol for the Applied Biosystems SOLiD System in addition to the protocol for the Illumina GAII which was released last month," said Fred Ernani, Ph.D., Agilent emerging genomics applications product manager. "The performance, ease of use and scalability of the SureSelect Human All Exon Kit combines well with the increasing capacity and efficiency of both of these next-generation sequencers."

The SureSelect Human All Exon Kit design covers 1.22 percent of human genomic regions corresponding to the NCBI Consensus CDS Database (CCDS), including more than 700 human miRNAs from the Sanger v13 database and more than 300 additional human non-coding RNAs in a single tube.

"The SureSelect All Exon Kit enrichment for the Applied Biosystems SOLiD System worked in our hands extremely well," said Dr. Michal Schweiger, MD, Ph.D., Cancer Genomics Group of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. "The amount of input DNA required is very low and the protocol straightforward to perform. We are very happy about the technology, especially in regard to our applications studying cancer where we have limited amounts of input DNA."

Agilent's SureSelect Target Enrichment System is now the platform with the most optimized protocols for a diverse set of sequencing protocols and platforms. It supports Illumina end-sequencing and paired-end sequencing protocols in addition to fragment library format sequencing on the SOLiD System. Users of Agilent's eArray online design tool can improve the efficiency of their research by easily designing custom products to target any genome of interest, all in a single tube.

— WebWireID106971 —

Biotechnology

Business Announcements

Electronic Components

Electronics

Electronics Performance Measurement

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

The Company delivers on its sustainability strategy with a 20 percent reduction in company-wide greenhouse gas emissions and landfill avoidance equaling 2.2 billion pounds since 1991; Corporate giving tops $12.6 million

NORWALK, Conn., Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today released its 2009 Report on Global Citizenship. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the company's activities and progress in the areas of corporate social responsibility: environmental sustainability, governance and ethics, customer privacy and satisfaction, employee diversity and development and corporate giving and volunteerism.

In the report's letter to stakeholders, Xerox Chairman Anne Mulcahy and Chief Executive Officer Ursula Burns said, "We were an early leader in the sustainability movement because we thought it was the right thing to do for the environment. But we discovered something else along the way. Every one of our innovations ended up either saving us money or creating new markets and new revenue. We found, in other words, that we don't have to choose between the environment and profit. We can do both."

Environmental Sustainability Progress to Date
Xerox aligns its environmental sustainability goals around the following four commitment areas where the company can make a significant impact across its entire value chain of technology and services:

    * Climate protection: Xerox invests in technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and the operations of our customers. Our goal is to become carbon neutral. To date, our company-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are down 20 percent from 2002 to 2008, and the company believes it will deliver a 25 percent reduction in total GHG emissions by 2012 from a 2002 baseline.

Last year, 80 percent of Xerox's eligible new products met or exceeded the international ENERGY STAR standard even as the program's stricter requirements made it tougher to meet. The company's goal is to deliver ENERGY STAR qualified equipment for 90 percent or more of eligible new products launched by 2010. The Xerox Sustainability Calculator, launched in 2008, is aimed at helping customers identify opportunities to reduce lifecycle energy use, solid waste and greenhouse gas emissions of office printing activities.

    * Preserving biodiversity and the world's forests: Xerox works with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to support the development of a sustainable paper cycle. Xerox expects its suppliers to adhere to stringent requirements for sustainable forest management. To date, more than 90 percent of Xerox paper by volume met the company's requirements; the goal is 100 percent by volume. In 2008, Xerox maintained chain of custody certification as planned, expanding the portfolio of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified papers it offers to customers. Xerox also continued its successful 3-year $1 million partnership with The Nature Conservancy that supports conservation work aimed at the development of a sustainable paper cycle.

    * Preserving clean air and water: Xerox strives to eliminate the use of toxic materials throughout the supply chain. For years, the company has applied strict internal standards that govern the use of chemicals in its operations and products and over time has re-engineered or substituted processes to dramatically reduce the use of toxics and heavy metals. Our goal is to achieve a zero toxic footprint.

    * Preventing and managing waste: Xerox's equipment and supplies returns and recycling programs diverted 106 million pounds of waste from landfills bringing total landfill avoidance to 2.2 billion pounds since 1991. The company achieved an internal recycle rate of 92 percent in 2008 and, in support of a "zero waste to landfill" goal for its company-wide operations, it is developing a waste-free goal in 2009. Xerox is on track to reduce the solid waste sent to landfills from its largest warehouses by 25 percent by 2012.

In May of 2009, Xerox launched its breakthrough ColorQube™ multifunction printer, which uses the company's proprietary solid ink technology. Its cartridge-free design generates 90 percent less office supplies waste than comparable laser devices and reduces the effects of manufacturing and transportation on the environment.

Additional highlights from Xerox's Report on Global Citizenship include:

    * The Customer Experience: Xerox offers the industry's broadest portfolio of document technology and services with more than 80 products launched in the last three years. In 2008, Xerox products garnered more than 230 awards worldwide, and Xerox was the first document management company to receive excellence certification from J.D. Power and Associates for quality technical support three years in a row - one of the customer service industry's highest recognitions.

    * Giving back to the communities in which we work and live: The Xerox Foundation invested $12.6 million in 2,825 non-profit organizations and matched approximately 1,700 employee contributions to not for profits. In 2008, Xerox and Xerox employees contributed $3.5 million to United Way organizations and more than 9,500 Xerox employees committed their time to worthwhile causes through the Xerox Community Involvement Program.

About Xerox
Headquartered in Norwalk, Conn., Xerox Corporation's 54,000 people represent the world's leading document management, technology and services enterprise, providing the industry's broadest portfolio of color and black-and-white document processing systems and related supplies, as well as document management consulting and outsourcing services.

— WebWireID106924 —

Art / Graphics / Photography

Computer Hardware

Electronics

Environment

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Speed Profiles for Taiwan First to Use Community Input in Asia to Help Drivers Identify Optimal Routes and More Accurately Estimate Travel Times

Singapore – Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location based solutions, today announced the availability of Tele Atlas® Speed Profiles in Taiwan, the first complete historic speed product in Asia built with insight from local drivers that enables navigation system users find the fastest routes and far more accurately estimate travel times. Speed Profiles for Taiwan provides drivers with unique insight into real world traffic patterns across the country's complete navigable road network. With Speed Profiles, drivers can make the best route choices that normally only well-informed locals would select and in turn, also save valuable time and money.

With congested roadways and ever-increasing travel times, users of mapping applications are seeking better ways to travel efficiently, minimize transportation costs and find the optimal routes to their destinations. Speed Profiles aggregates and enhances real speed data from GPS-enabled devices, using consumer driving patterns to provide true average speeds on individual road segments. In contrast, traditional systems use standardized estimates to calculate routes, ignoring hurdles such as traffic lights, school hours and rotaries that can severely impact travel times. Speed Profiles for Taiwan is Tele Atlas' first community-based offering outside of North America and Europe, highlighting the expanding and ever more global role of community in advancing navigation and location-based solutions.

'With Speed Profiles, our regional customers can now deliver solutions that help consumers save time and money, consume less fuel and help preserve the environment, as well as help businesses cut transportation and logistics costs,' said Rik Temmink, Vice President of Product Management, Tele Atlas. 'This is especially important in densely populated countries like Taiwan, whose traffic jams are some of the most complex and chaotic in the world. We are excited to extend availability of this unique and powerful product to Asia and to be the first to deliver a complete solution in the region based on historical driving information.'

Speed Profiles enables route calculations based on highly comprehensive historical travel time and measured speed information. Tele Atlas Speed Profiles is available in 27 countries and territories, covering 35 million kilometers of both directions of roads. The version for Taiwan includes 211,000 kilometers and complete coverage of the navigable road network.

About Tele Atlas
Tele Atlas delivers the digital maps and dynamic content that power many of the world's most essential navigation and location-based services (LBS). Through a combination of its own products and partnerships, Tele Atlas offers map coverage of more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The company was founded in 1984 and has offices in 27 countries around the world. Today, Tele Atlas products are developed with the insight of a community of millions of digital map users worldwide, who are adding to the company's unmatched network of sources to track and validate changes in real time, and deliver the best digital maps and dynamic content.

M14K™ and M14Kc™ Cores Combine High Performance, Compact Area and Low Power for Microcontroller and Low-Footprint Embedded Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores, today introduced a new core family providing the highest levels of system performance for extremely cost-sensitive embedded applications such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), home entertainment, personal entertainment and home networking. The new MIPS32® M14KTM and M14KcTM cores are the first MIPS32-compatible cores that also execute the new microMIPSTM instruction set architecture (ISA), achieving high performance of
1.5 DMIPS/MHz with an advanced level of code compression. The microMIPS ISA maintains 98% of MIPS32 performance while reducing code size by 35%, translating to significant silicon cost savings.

According to Art Swift, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies, "Growing amounts of signal processing and higher speed connectivity are driving up the performance requirements in MCUs and many cost-sensitive embedded applications, while still requiring a very small silicon footprint. We're enabling our customers to develop high-performance devices in smaller form factors to significantly decrease development costs. We're pleased to enhance and expand our offering for MCU and system designers with these groundbreaking new cores."

"MCUs continue to migrate towards 32-bit to address the needs of more sophisticated, performance-intensive applications," said Tony Massimini, chief of technology, Semico Research. "Processors that support 32-bit MCUs and other high-performance, low-footprint embedded devices must not only provide the requisite performance and right feature set, but they also need to be extremely compact to keep flash memory and silicon costs down. This enables smaller die area which allows for further integration. The specifications of the new M14K cores suggest great promise for the next generation of these devices."

The M14K Core for Microcontrollers

The M14K core combines high performance with an advanced level of code compression for the 32-bit MCU market, achieving performance of 1.5 DMIPS/MHz and 180 MHz in 130nm. The M14K core offers advanced features that are optimized for MCU and real-time embedded applications, including reduced interrupt latency, flash acceleration, advanced debug features including iFlowTraceTM and support for AHB Lite as the interconnect interface. Designed on the MIPS32 4K® micro-architecture that is already proven in hundreds of millions of SoCs, the M14K core is highly configurable and extendable, offering a wide range of implementation options to minimize cost and maximize reusability.

"Microchip is delighted to see continued innovation and commitment from MIPS Technologies in the 32-bit MCU market. The new M14K and M14Kc cores, and the microMIPS ISA offer enhancements important to MCU users, including even faster interrupt latency and smaller code size," said Sumit Mitra, vice president, High Performance Microcontroller Division, Microchip Technology. "Microchip is pleased with the enthusiastic acceptance of its MIPS-based PIC32 MCU family offering best-in-class performance. As with our 8-bit and 16-bit microcontroller businesses, Microchip is committed to a long term roadmap with our MIPS-based 32-bit MCU products."

The M14Kc Core for High Performance, Low Footprint Applications

The M14Kc core builds on the base M14K core with additional features for embedded applications such as home entertainment, home networking and personal mobile entertainment. These applications require a compact footprint but also the ability to execute increasingly complex software algorithms on an RTOS or Linux. Based on the popular MIPS32 4KEcTM micro-architecture, which provides a powerful Linux and Java engine and superior performance for the Android platform, the M14Kc core has a full cache controller and translation lookaside buffer (TLB) memory management unit (MMU).

microMIPS ISA for Advanced Code Compression

At the heart of the M14K and M14Kc cores is the new microMIPS ISA that offers 32-bit performance with 16-bit code size for most instructions. The microMIPS ISA combines recoded and new 16- and 32-bit instructions to achieve an ideal balance of performance and code density. It incorporates all MIPS32 instructions and Application Specific Extensions (ASEs) including MIPS-3D® ASE, MIPS DSP ASE, MIPS MT ASE and SmartMIPS® ASE, as well as new instructions for advanced code size reduction. The microMIPS ISA is backward compatible, enabling reuse of optimized MIPS micro-architecture. With smaller memory accesses and efficient use of the instruction cache, the microMIPS ISA also helps to reduce system power consumption.

Ecosystem and Tool Support

MIPS Technologies is providing complete software development tool support for the new M14K and M14Kc cores, with the Eclipse-based MIPS NavigatorTM Integrated Component Suite (ICS) and System NavigatorTM probes for debugging. MIPS Technologies is also working with leading third party software vendors for broad tool and OS support.

"With Sourcery G++TM, CodeSourcery's industry-leading software development environment based on the GNU Toolchain and the Eclipse IDE, we already support the entire range of MIPS32 cores, and we will soon be providing support for the M14K and M14Kc cores (including the new MicroMIPS ISA) as well," said Mark Mitchell, chief sourcerer, CodeSourcery. "We are pleased to continue our partnership with MIPS Technologies to deliver the tools MIPS developers need to quickly bring products to market."

"The new MIPS32 M14K and M14Kc cores and microMIPS ISA provide the ultimate platforms to leverage the low power and high performance characteristics of the Nucleus OS," said Glenn Perry, general manager of the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics. "Combining cores like the M14Kc with Mentor's multiOS solutions for Linux, Android and Nucleus will enable our mutual customers to develop innovative multi-OS solutions with world-class support and performance quality from Mentor Graphics."

"Express Logic's ThreadX® RTOS is ideal for deeply embedded systems where small code size and real-time performance are critical, and the microMIPS ISA appears to be a great fit for enabling the next generation of these systems," said William E. Lamie, president and CEO ExpressLogic. "With ThreadX on MIPS cores, developers have a powerful solution to help them get to market quickly. We have worked closely with MIPS Technologies for many years, and we're continuing that work with them on microMIPS and the M14K family."

"Micrium currently provides embedded software support for the MIPS32 architecture with our small-footprint µC/OS-II RTOS," said Christian Legare, Micrium vice president. "Micrium is known for saving precious design time, resulting in a substantial cost advantage for such embedded applications as industrial, medical and automotive. With its M14K core, MIPS Technologies offers a unique value proposition for developers in these markets. Micrium recognizes the benefits and importance of porting to the M14K core."

"We recently announced support for MIPS32 cores in our new MontaVista Linux 6 Market Specific Distributions (MSDs), offering a tailored combination of features and functionality specific for those cores. MontaVista Linux 6 will also provide support for the M14Kc core to enable MIPS developers to quickly create differentiated products by building on an optimized, commercial-quality embedded Linux," said Scott Mullarkey, vice president, worldwide business development, MontaVista Software.

"With Timesys LinuxLink support for the complete family of MIPS32 cores, including the new M14Kc core, MIPS Technologies' licensees can provide Linux solutions for their processors and reference platforms within days," said Maciej Halasz, director of product management at Timesys. "Licensees can quickly assemble Linux images for reference kits, while their OEM customers can accelerate their time-to-market and build Linux-based products for a wide range of applications through the unique productivity features in the LinuxLink software development framework. We are pleased to extend our comprehensive support for the MIPS architecture by adding LinuxLink support for this new core."

Simulation Support

MIPS will also provide both accurate and fast simulation models for the M14K and M14Kc cores. SoC developers can leverage 100% cycle accurate models-built with technology from Carbon Design Systems-for verification in SystemC and co-simulation environments. Software developers can also take advantage of fast instruction set simulators-developed in conjunction with Imperas-for use in software development and virtual platforms.

"We are pleased to provide MIPS Technologies with our Carbon Model Studio tools to generate cycle accurate models of its new cores," said Bill Neifert, CTO and vice president, business development, Carbon Design Systems. "With models of the M14K and M14Kc cores created using Carbon's leading technology, SoC developers get 100 percent cycle accurate models that work in many different design environments, enabling accurate architectural analysis and pre-silicon performance analysis."

"We are working together with MIPS to create MIPS-VerifiedTM instruction-accurate models of its newest cores that MIPS will provide to its licensees," said Simon Davidmann, CEO of Imperas. "With our instruction accurate simulation technology and these models, developers can simulate complete embedded systems running real application code at very fast speeds on typical desktop PCs-helping them get to market quickly at the lowest possible cost."

Availability

The new M14K and M14Kc cores will be available in the first quarter of 2010.
