High Integrated Transceiver - Extensive Choice of Memory Variants

KAWASAKI (Japan), DUESSELDORF and DORTMUND (Germany) - ELMOS Semiconductor AG (FSE: ELG) and NEC Electronics (TSE: 6723) today announced the availability of its four new single-chip IO-Link solutions for IO-Link slave applications. This project is based on a close cooperation with TMG-Karlsruhe. The new IO-Link solutions combine NEC Electronics' All Flash™ 78K0R 16-bit microcontroller and ELMOS IO-Link transceiver, with integrated IO-Link slave protocol stack in a single package. The part numbers differ according to their flash memory capacity; uPD78F8040 offers 32 kilobytes (KB), uPD78F8041 offers 64 KB, uPD78F8042 offers 96 KB, and uPD78F8043 offers 128 KB of flash memory.

IO-Link is the preferred standard serial digital communications protocol used for sensors and actuators in industrial automation systems. IO-Link offers the following advantages:

    * Compatible integration into existing fieldbus or Industrial Ethernet environment
* Process, parameter and diagnosis data in one cable
* compatible cabling to existing sensor communication

One key advantage of using the IO-Link slave protocol stack offered with the NEC Electronics' solutions is that minor upgrades could be included if the IO-Link specification is enhanced, significantly reducing development time and effort. Alternatively, designers can opt to develop and maintain their own software stacks. The ELMOS transceiver integrates significant analogue components, which enable system designers to eliminate use of additional external components and develop a complete IO-Link slave product at low cost.

NEC Electronics provides extensive product range to include a choice of memory variants all in the same device package. Developers can choose from 4 pin-compatible memory configurations in an 8mm x 8mm 56-pin QFN package making it easy to switch to a larger memory if more software is needed. Flash sizes from 32 KB to 128 KB will be available. This also allows developers to use the same PCB for multiple designs even though different amounts of software may be required. A 32 KB device can easily be replaced by a 128 KB device without having to re-design the PCB.

To support system designers in using the IO-Link single-chip solution, NEC Electronics and ELMOS can also provide a comprehensive development kit at lower cost than most of the other kits in the market. The 78K0R Link-It! kit is available now.

The IO-Link market is now beginning to show real promise and ELMOS and NEC Electronics are working with several vendors some of whom are already engaged in development projects. ELMOS and NEC Electronics are well placed to enable system designers to quickly and easily achieve differentiated designs using the only single-chip IO-Link solution available on the market

Availability

Samples of the new single-chip IO-Link solutions are available now. Mass production of the new devices is slated to begin in April 2010, with expected monthly mass production of 500,000 units. (Availability is subject to change without notice.)

More information about ELMOS and NEC Electronics' solutions for the industrial automation market can be found at http://www.elmos.de/german/produkte/know-how/io-link.html or http://www.eu.necel.com/iolink

(Remark)

All Flash is a trademark or registered trademark of NEC Electronics in Japan, America, Singapore, Hong Kong, UK, German, and China. NEC Electronics is a registered trademark or trademark of NEC Corporation. All other marks are property of their respective owners.

About ELMOS Semiconductor AG
ELMOS Semiconductor AG (FSE: ELG) is a leading developer and producer of customer-specific system solutions in the automotive sector. Based on the modular high-voltage CMOS technology, a great amount of analog mixed-signal circuitry elements such as voltage regulators, analog/digital converters, power-drives and NVM storage offer a huge range of integration possibilities for customers' ideas.

M14K™ and M14Kc™ Cores Combine High Performance, Compact Area and Low Power for Microcontroller and Low-Footprint Embedded Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores, today introduced a new core family providing the highest levels of system performance for extremely cost-sensitive embedded applications such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), home entertainment, personal entertainment and home networking. The new MIPS32® M14KTM and M14KcTM cores are the first MIPS32-compatible cores that also execute the new microMIPSTM instruction set architecture (ISA), achieving high performance of
1.5 DMIPS/MHz with an advanced level of code compression. The microMIPS ISA maintains 98% of MIPS32 performance while reducing code size by 35%, translating to significant silicon cost savings.

According to Art Swift, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies, "Growing amounts of signal processing and higher speed connectivity are driving up the performance requirements in MCUs and many cost-sensitive embedded applications, while still requiring a very small silicon footprint. We're enabling our customers to develop high-performance devices in smaller form factors to significantly decrease development costs. We're pleased to enhance and expand our offering for MCU and system designers with these groundbreaking new cores."

"MCUs continue to migrate towards 32-bit to address the needs of more sophisticated, performance-intensive applications," said Tony Massimini, chief of technology, Semico Research. "Processors that support 32-bit MCUs and other high-performance, low-footprint embedded devices must not only provide the requisite performance and right feature set, but they also need to be extremely compact to keep flash memory and silicon costs down. This enables smaller die area which allows for further integration. The specifications of the new M14K cores suggest great promise for the next generation of these devices."

The M14K Core for Microcontrollers

The M14K core combines high performance with an advanced level of code compression for the 32-bit MCU market, achieving performance of 1.5 DMIPS/MHz and 180 MHz in 130nm. The M14K core offers advanced features that are optimized for MCU and real-time embedded applications, including reduced interrupt latency, flash acceleration, advanced debug features including iFlowTraceTM and support for AHB Lite as the interconnect interface. Designed on the MIPS32 4K® micro-architecture that is already proven in hundreds of millions of SoCs, the M14K core is highly configurable and extendable, offering a wide range of implementation options to minimize cost and maximize reusability.

"Microchip is delighted to see continued innovation and commitment from MIPS Technologies in the 32-bit MCU market. The new M14K and M14Kc cores, and the microMIPS ISA offer enhancements important to MCU users, including even faster interrupt latency and smaller code size," said Sumit Mitra, vice president, High Performance Microcontroller Division, Microchip Technology. "Microchip is pleased with the enthusiastic acceptance of its MIPS-based PIC32 MCU family offering best-in-class performance. As with our 8-bit and 16-bit microcontroller businesses, Microchip is committed to a long term roadmap with our MIPS-based 32-bit MCU products."

The M14Kc Core for High Performance, Low Footprint Applications

The M14Kc core builds on the base M14K core with additional features for embedded applications such as home entertainment, home networking and personal mobile entertainment. These applications require a compact footprint but also the ability to execute increasingly complex software algorithms on an RTOS or Linux. Based on the popular MIPS32 4KEcTM micro-architecture, which provides a powerful Linux and Java engine and superior performance for the Android platform, the M14Kc core has a full cache controller and translation lookaside buffer (TLB) memory management unit (MMU).

microMIPS ISA for Advanced Code Compression

At the heart of the M14K and M14Kc cores is the new microMIPS ISA that offers 32-bit performance with 16-bit code size for most instructions. The microMIPS ISA combines recoded and new 16- and 32-bit instructions to achieve an ideal balance of performance and code density. It incorporates all MIPS32 instructions and Application Specific Extensions (ASEs) including MIPS-3D® ASE, MIPS DSP ASE, MIPS MT ASE and SmartMIPS® ASE, as well as new instructions for advanced code size reduction. The microMIPS ISA is backward compatible, enabling reuse of optimized MIPS micro-architecture. With smaller memory accesses and efficient use of the instruction cache, the microMIPS ISA also helps to reduce system power consumption.

Ecosystem and Tool Support

MIPS Technologies is providing complete software development tool support for the new M14K and M14Kc cores, with the Eclipse-based MIPS NavigatorTM Integrated Component Suite (ICS) and System NavigatorTM probes for debugging. MIPS Technologies is also working with leading third party software vendors for broad tool and OS support.

"With Sourcery G++TM, CodeSourcery's industry-leading software development environment based on the GNU Toolchain and the Eclipse IDE, we already support the entire range of MIPS32 cores, and we will soon be providing support for the M14K and M14Kc cores (including the new MicroMIPS ISA) as well," said Mark Mitchell, chief sourcerer, CodeSourcery. "We are pleased to continue our partnership with MIPS Technologies to deliver the tools MIPS developers need to quickly bring products to market."

"The new MIPS32 M14K and M14Kc cores and microMIPS ISA provide the ultimate platforms to leverage the low power and high performance characteristics of the Nucleus OS," said Glenn Perry, general manager of the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics. "Combining cores like the M14Kc with Mentor's multiOS solutions for Linux, Android and Nucleus will enable our mutual customers to develop innovative multi-OS solutions with world-class support and performance quality from Mentor Graphics."

"Express Logic's ThreadX® RTOS is ideal for deeply embedded systems where small code size and real-time performance are critical, and the microMIPS ISA appears to be a great fit for enabling the next generation of these systems," said William E. Lamie, president and CEO ExpressLogic. "With ThreadX on MIPS cores, developers have a powerful solution to help them get to market quickly. We have worked closely with MIPS Technologies for many years, and we're continuing that work with them on microMIPS and the M14K family."

"Micrium currently provides embedded software support for the MIPS32 architecture with our small-footprint µC/OS-II RTOS," said Christian Legare, Micrium vice president. "Micrium is known for saving precious design time, resulting in a substantial cost advantage for such embedded applications as industrial, medical and automotive. With its M14K core, MIPS Technologies offers a unique value proposition for developers in these markets. Micrium recognizes the benefits and importance of porting to the M14K core."

"We recently announced support for MIPS32 cores in our new MontaVista Linux 6 Market Specific Distributions (MSDs), offering a tailored combination of features and functionality specific for those cores. MontaVista Linux 6 will also provide support for the M14Kc core to enable MIPS developers to quickly create differentiated products by building on an optimized, commercial-quality embedded Linux," said Scott Mullarkey, vice president, worldwide business development, MontaVista Software.

"With Timesys LinuxLink support for the complete family of MIPS32 cores, including the new M14Kc core, MIPS Technologies' licensees can provide Linux solutions for their processors and reference platforms within days," said Maciej Halasz, director of product management at Timesys. "Licensees can quickly assemble Linux images for reference kits, while their OEM customers can accelerate their time-to-market and build Linux-based products for a wide range of applications through the unique productivity features in the LinuxLink software development framework. We are pleased to extend our comprehensive support for the MIPS architecture by adding LinuxLink support for this new core."

Simulation Support

MIPS will also provide both accurate and fast simulation models for the M14K and M14Kc cores. SoC developers can leverage 100% cycle accurate models-built with technology from Carbon Design Systems-for verification in SystemC and co-simulation environments. Software developers can also take advantage of fast instruction set simulators-developed in conjunction with Imperas-for use in software development and virtual platforms.

"We are pleased to provide MIPS Technologies with our Carbon Model Studio tools to generate cycle accurate models of its new cores," said Bill Neifert, CTO and vice president, business development, Carbon Design Systems. "With models of the M14K and M14Kc cores created using Carbon's leading technology, SoC developers get 100 percent cycle accurate models that work in many different design environments, enabling accurate architectural analysis and pre-silicon performance analysis."

"We are working together with MIPS to create MIPS-VerifiedTM instruction-accurate models of its newest cores that MIPS will provide to its licensees," said Simon Davidmann, CEO of Imperas. "With our instruction accurate simulation technology and these models, developers can simulate complete embedded systems running real application code at very fast speeds on typical desktop PCs-helping them get to market quickly at the lowest possible cost."

Availability

The new M14K and M14Kc cores will be available in the first quarter of 2010.

Boise, Idaho – When designing solid-state storage for enterprise applications, standard SLC NAND has been the technology of choice because of its reliability and endurance. But customers are often challenged on how to cost-effectively reach their capacity requirements. Micron Technology, Inc. is meeting customers' requirements by announcing today that it has leveraged its award-winning 34nm NAND process to manufacture an MLC Enterprise NAND device, which provides enterprise organizations a way to cost-effectively and reliably double their flash-based enterprise storage capacity (since MLC provides twice the capacity in the same die size as SLC). Micron's new MLC Enterprise NAND device achieves 30,000 write cycles – a 6x increase in endurance when compared to standard MLC NAND. And for enterprise applications that are more performance driven, Micron today also introduced a 34nm SLC Enterprise NAND device that achieves 300,000 write cycles – a 3x increase in endurance when compared to standard SLC NAND.

Additionally, leveraging the full performance capability of NAND, Micron's newest Enterprise NAND products also support the ONFI 2.1synchronous interface, delivering a 4- to 5x improvement in data transfer rates when compared to legacy NAND interfaces. Micron's 34nm Enterprise NAND portfolio includes a 32Gb MLC NAND chip and a 16Gb SLC NAND chip that can be configured into multi-die, single packages supporting densities up to 32GB MLC and 16GB SLC, respectively. Micron is now sampling its Enterprise NAND products with customers and controller manufacturers, and is expected to be in volume production in early 2010. For further explanation on Micron's Enterprise NAND products, visit Micron's Innovations blog to catch a video that describes how Micron leveraged its mature 34nm NAND process to achieve these levels of reliability.

'By leveraging our mature 34nm NAND process, Micron has developed Enterprise NAND products that support customers' high-endurance requirements. These products ensure that enterprise organizations have a highly reliable NAND flash solution – be it MLC or SLC – for design into the broader enterprise storage platform,' said Brian Shirley, vice president of Micron's memory group.

'The use of advanced NAND flash is required to achieve broad SSD adoption in enterprise applications,' said Steffen Hellmold, vice president of business development at SandForce. 'We are very excited to work with Micron and enable cost effective, reliable, high-performance SSD solutions that support stringent enterprise lifecycle requirements.'

Relevant Links
There are other ways to stay up-to-date on Micron news:

    * Micron Innovations Blog: www.micronblogs.com
* Micron on Twitter: twitter.com/microntechpr
* Micron Pressroom: www.micron.com/media

About Micron
Micron Technology, Inc., is one of the world's leading providers of advanced semiconductor solutions. It was time to implement a top-tier solution equal to Invacare's objective of maintaining its market leadership.

'We are digging out from the deluge of data in numerous spreadsheets - escaping death by spreadsheet,' Mewes added. 'SAS Financial Management will give us a 'one-touch view' of everything going on globally. Closings and daily analysis will be faster and easier. With the worldwide control and consistency enabled by SAS Financial Management, we will be able to standardize metrics and methodologies across all business units. SAS will help us determine where we can cut costs, and make us more nimble and proactive in addressing market opportunities.'
Better and faster business decisions

When Invacare selected SAS Financial Management to solve the company's business pains, they quickly recognized the value of this relationship with SAS. 'SAS is committed to Invacare's continued success. Making and, ultimately, the improved quality of life that Invacare customers count on,' said Phil Strand, Business Director, SAS Performance Management.

SAS Financial Management is a comprehensive Financial Intelligence solution for enterprise planning, budgeting, consolidation and reporting.

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced a new flying leads probe for its PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 E2960B Series analyzers, using the Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) probe head. The new ZIF flying leads probe uses the Agilent Infiniimax ZIF design, which allows designers to use the same probe points for physical layer measurements as well as protocol debugging using the protocol analyzer. This simplifies troubleshooting situations where it is unclear whether the fault lies in the physical layer or in protocol interactions. The new ZIF flying leads probe supports both 2.5 GT/s and 5.0 GT/s PCI Express data rates.

One of the challenges associated with debugging any PCIe 2.0 problem is determining if the root cause is due to the logic design or caused by signal-integrity issues at the physical layer. Determining root cause is especially difficult in embedded designs such as medical instruments as well as communication and military designs. With Agilent's new ZIF flying leads probe, the same ZIF tip soldering point can be used with the oscilloscope for physical layer measurements or with the protocol analyzer to debug protocol problems.

"Agilent is the industry leader in PCI Express measurement, with tools that cover physical layer and protocol layer testing," said Jun Chie, marketing manager for Agilent's Logic and Protocol Test business. "With this unique coverage, we can provide our customers with leverage between these tools. This is a key time savings and cost savings for our customers, and very important especially in this economic climate."

At PCIe 2.0 speeds, reliable probing becomes even more important. Without a reliable probing solution and the right form factor, reliable data capture becomes difficult if not impossible. Agilent's ZIF flying leads probe is designed for reliable signals and ease of probing access and includes the following features:

    * very low-capacitive loading that enables insight without influencing the monitored signals;
* easy-to-disconnect probe head (ZIF probe head) to protect probe connector and ensure many reuses;
* longer leads and probe length for easier access to probing points on the system under test; and
* long probe head (ZIF probe head) for access to different types of probing points.

Agilent understands that probing is key to trustworthy data, which is essential to debugging the PCIe 2.0 link. With the introduction of the ZIF flying leads probe, Agilent provides an industry-unique probe portfolio for PCIe 2.0, including the full-size mid-bus probe (straight, swizzle and split styles available), half-size mid-bus probe, slot interposer probe, flying leads probe and now the ZIF flying leads probe. Agilent's extensive probing capabilities are combined with a powerful PCIe 2.0 analyzer, with a reliable data capture engine, easy-to-use graphical user interface and a versatile form factor, making Agilent's E2960B Series the leader in the industry for PCI Express 2.0 test and debugging.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

The Agilent N4241Z ZIF flying leads probe 2.0 is available now. Pricing for a full analysis system including the ZIF flying leads probe starts at $38,500.

Frost & Sullivan Research Finds Dramatic Return on Investments in Advanced Collaboration Tools; IP Networks Growing as Business Platform

NEW YORK – Organizations around the world that deploy the most advanced Internet-protocol-based collaboration technologies achieve more than twice the return on their collaboration investment and perform better than their less collaborative peers, according to a new Frost & Sullivan study released Wednesday (Oct. 14).

"Meetings Around the World II: Charting the Course of Advanced Collaboration," sponsored by Verizon and Cisco, examines how professionals in businesses and government agencies get their work done by using advanced collaboration tools such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), instant messaging or meeting via high-definition video or Cisco TelePresence™.

(NOTE: To access a social media release containing video and audio podcasts and other related online resources, visit: http://www.verizonbusiness.com/go/meetingsaroundtheworld.)

The study also introduces the industry's first quantitative model for a return on collaboration investment. The groundbreaking measurement, called the Return on Collaboration index, establishes a progressive impact of deploying advanced unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) technologies on business performance, and measures improvements in areas such as research and development, human resources, sales, marketing, investor relations and public relations.

The study found that businesses and government agencies deploying increasingly more sophisticated collaboration tools -- such as VoIP soft phones, immersive video and fixed mobile convergence -- saw a corresponding improvement in business results relative to the amount invested. The overall average Return on Collaboration (ROC) score was 4.2 -- meaning organizations received an average return of four times their investment in deploying collaboration technologies in terms of improvement across business-critical areas.

The organizations surveyed by the study reported that advanced collaboration such as UC&C enhances their ability to produce positive results. For example, research and development managers in organizations deploying UC&C reported that advanced collaboration tools enable products and solutions to be developed more quickly, with an improved chance of market success, a higher degree of quality, and a lower overall cost of development.

The new study builds on the 2006 Frost & Sullivan study -- "Meetings Around the World: The Impact of Collaboration on Business Performance" - which determined collaboration is a key driver of business performance and collaboration through communications technologies can provide a competitive advantage.

"'Meetings Around the World II' confirms and extends the key findings of the original study and builds on those conclusions," said Brian Cotton, vice president for information and communications technologies for Frost & Sullivan. "This latest research shows adopting progressively more advanced unified communications and collaboration tools can help organizations achieve a corresponding return on collaboration and improvement across all business functions. This return was most dramatic in the areas of sales, marketing, and research and development."

3,662 SMB, Enterprise Decision-Makers in 10 Countries

Frost & Sullivan in May 2009 conducted an online survey of 3,662 information technology (IT) or line-of-business decision-makers in organizations in 10 countries in Asia-Pacific, Europe and the U.S. The survey gauged attitudes and practices within small and medium-sized businesses (50 to 999 employees) and enterprises (1,000 or more employees) in the financial services, government, health care, high technology, professional services, manufacturing and retail industries.

The study was undertaken as organizations around the world grappled with a challenging economy, and results showed use of UC&C solutions are becoming increasingly popular. Nearly half (44 percent) of all organizations surveyed have deployed UC&C tools -- such as user presence on a device, document sharing, immersive video or Cisco TelePresence for near-lifelike visual communications, integrated voice, e-mail and instant messaging, and telephone features and management capabilities on mobile devices and the desktop.

The study also found that 40 percent of organizations that deploy UC&C plan to increase spending on this despite current economic conditions. In addition, more than 80 percent of organizations that have not deployed UC&C tools plan to deploy some form of them in the next two to three years.

Nancy Gofus, senior vice president of global business products for Verizon, said, "Based on this study, we see an era of advanced collaboration on the horizon. Organizations embracing unified communications and collaboration tools in an open, decentralized structure are enabling a more effective work style and cultivating a fertile ground for success. As organizations aspire to become advanced collaborators, even small steps taken along the way can immediately pay off."

Creating a Collaboration 'Network Effect'

The greatest impact of collaboration was where the largest numbers of people interacted for a common goal, including sales, research and development and marketing. By implementing more advanced UC&C tools, the study found, organizations could increase their return across all areas.

This finding suggests that teams using UC&C tools can benefit from a "network effect" -- a theory attributed to Robert Metcalfe, the co-inventor of Ethernet, that holds that the more users on a network, the more value is likely realized from it. While larger enterprises tended to receive greater collaboration returns, small and medium-sized businesses can increase returns by deploying progressively more advanced tools and expanding their reach beyond their organizations working with customers, partners and suppliers.

[For more information on attitudes toward collaboration around the world, go to: http://www.verizonbusiness.com/about/news/displaynews.xml?newsid=25390&mode=vzlong. Our expert UC&C professional services capabilities combined with our comprehensive solutions portfolio can help organizations embrace this new work style and mobilize their workforce for a competitive advantage."

(NOTE: To see how Verizon Business customers CA and First American are embracing advanced collaboration to their business advantage, go to: http://www.verizonbusiness.com/about/news/displaynews.xml?newsid=25279&mode=vzlong〈=en&width=530
and http://www.verizonbusiness.com/about/news/displaynews.xml?newsid=25386&mode=vzlong.)

"The Meetings Around the World II study confirms that collaboration is the next phase of the Internet and at the center of this phase is the network as a platform," said Carlos Dominguez, senior vice president for the office of the chairman and CEO, Cisco. "Having the right collaborative platform helps enable enterprises and organizations to speed decision making, increase productivity and improve interactions with their customers and partners, all designed to give them a competitive edge."

Verizon is a leading provider of collaboration and unified communications services, enabling organizations to conveniently and effectively collaborate, virtually anytime, anywhere, helping them improve response time and productivity without the costs and carbon emissions associated with business travel.

Optical viewfinder replacement enables smaller, thinner digital cameras

TOKYO, Japan, Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson", TSE:6724) today announced that it has begun volume production of a new high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS) TFT color panel for electronic viewfinders. Measuring just 0.47 of an inch (1.2 cm) diagonally, the new panels offer SVGA (800 x RGB x 600) resolution in red, green and blue for a total of 1.44 megapixels.
The new panels are targeted at camera manufacturers for use as electronic viewfinders in mid- to high-end digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras.

Competition in the digital camera market has reached a fever pitch. Companies are launching new products with higher resolutions and more features at even lower prices. In recent years, more and more consumers have been switching from compact cameras to SLR units in pursuit of better performance and image quality, driving the need for smaller and thinner DSLR cameras with video and other features.
Epson's new panels meet this need and open a whole world of possibilities for DSLR cameras.

Until now, no electronic viewfinder has been able to offer the resolution and fidelity needed to replace optical viewfinders and to focus the image. Epson's new panel, developed using HTPS technology, not only makes this possible but also uses an analog driver to recreate smooth gradations and a natural softness. This panel will allow camera manufacturers to eliminate the mirrors and pentaprisms needed for optical viewfinders, enabling much smaller and thinner camera bodies and letting users capture the image they see. In addition, the use of a color filter prevents the color breakup that tends to occur with other color systems when shooting fast-moving subjects and while panning.

Epson has long developed HTPS panels to meet the high-definition, high-resolution needs of its market-leading projector business. Using technology developed for projectors, Epson created this new product to meet the needs of the digital camera market.

This panel is the first in Epson's new "ULTIMICRON" series of compact, high-resolution HTPS panels that display full color on a single screen for electronic viewfinders and other compact displays. Epson will continue to offer new solutions for the growing DSLR camera market by expanding its lineup with higher resolutions, better image quality, and smaller sizes.

Features of the new panel

    * Compact
o Small 0.47-inch diagonal screen enables compact, thin cameras
* High resolution
o High pixel density with SVGA resolution (800 x RGB x 600, 1.44 megapixels)
* Color filter
o Not affected by color breakup that occurs with fast-moving subjects and panning shots when using a field-sequential color system

Advantages when used in a DSLR camera

    * High resolution enables easy focusing
* Can capture images as they are seen
* Viable alternative to optical viewfinder
o Avoids the blackout of optical viewfinders when shooting video
o Enables smaller cameras by eliminating need for mirrors and pentaprisms
o Eliminates mechanical time lag caused by mirror

New panel specifications
Name 	L3F04S-80300
LCD type TN mode, organic alignment layer
Color display system Color filter (RGB stripe)
Effective pixels 	800 x RGB x 600 (SVGA)
Panel size (diagonal) 0.47 inch (1.2 cm)
Pixel pitch 	12 µm (4 x RGB) x 12 µm
Color space 	92% of sRGB
Contrast ratio 	280:1
Backlight 	Yes
Surface luminance 	460 cd/m2
Displayable colors Approx. 16.77 million colors

Related information

To learn more about the advantages of HTPS panels, visit http://www.epson.jp/e/products/device/htps/.
Product exhibition

The new panels will be on display from at the International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition (Inter BEE 2009) to be held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan, from November 18 to 20.

One Communications calls SAS to uncover billing errors in complex carrier chargeback network

CARY, NC - One Communications depends on SAS® Business Analytics to quickly and efficiently monitor the system of intercarrier compensation for calls switched between networks. The result: $500,000 saved the first year and several million dollars since.

With annual revenue of $800 million and serving customers in 16 states, One Communications finds the results significant. The company – founded as an alternative to local phone companies during telecommunications deregulation – also uses SAS Business Analytics to increase flexibility and profitability in numerous other areas.

'Before we brought billing in-house, we felt that we were not billing everything we could. In carrier access billing, there are too many chances to miss billing opportunities. Our then-CEO had concerns that as a startup company we were turning on a lot of lines without billing for all of them,' said Rick Pigeon, Vice President of Network Planning and Optimization. 'Since bringing our billing in-house and deploying SAS, we've saved millions of dollars. That's huge.'

One Communications deployed SAS Business Intelligence server, SAS® Enterprise Guide®, Base SAS and SAS/STAT® well before the global economy soured. Pigeon said SAS Business Analytics has even greater impact in tough times.

'The pressure of the tough economy drives us to become more efficient in everything that we do, especially our network costs,' he says. 'That is very significant portion of our budget. SAS allowed us to very effectively validate our network cost. There is no way an individual analyst paying a bill could pick up that bill and determine if it is accurate or not. With SAS we can process very large volumes of data from our billing system, as well as tariff data, and determine if the billing is accurate.'
Customer Responsiveness

SAS Business Analytics has also improved customer service at One Communications, said Kelly Smilanich, One Communications' Manager of Mediation. 'If Sales wants to get a new customer into the system so the revenue appears in a current quarter, we can do that in one day with SAS – 28 faster than before. The sales people can turn things around quickly, and that demonstrates how responsive we are to customer needs,' she said.

Smilanich said business analysts appreciate the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, which allows internal clients to work with meaningful, timely data using a familiar interface.

'They now have almost a year of history on our server. They don't have to sift through their e-mail to get the information they need. They absolutely love it,' she said.

The SAS Business Analytics Framework is a powerful blend of data integration, analytics, reporting and an ever-expanding portfolio of industry and line-of-business solutions. Organizations can quickly address their most immediate business issues, extending their use of SAS over time to achieve continuous performance improvements.

About SAS
SAS is the leader in business analytics software and services, and the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market. Through innovative solutions delivered within an integrated framework, SAS helps customers at more than 45,000 sites improve performance and deliver value by making better decisions faster. Since 1976 SAS has been giving customers around the world The Power to Know® .

— WebWireID105635 —

Computer Networks

Computer Software

Electronic Design Automation

Electronics Performance Measurement

Telecommunications

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Industry-First Measurements for IEEE 1588v2 Transparent/Boundary Clocks, which Speed Timing-over-Packet Rollout, Unveiled at ISPCS Plug-fest

BRESCIA, Italy, ISPCS, Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today demonstrated its new N2X IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) test solution that enables network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and network operators to ensure that time-critical Carrier and Industrial Ethernet applications are synchronized. Agilent will present a white paper about this technology at the event's conference.

Operators are migrating to Ethernet because it is far less expensive than traditional transport technologies. N2X verified the interoperability of various vendors' Ethernet devices under extreme loads during the ISPCS Plug-fest using a novel test methodology.

Ethernet has no clock-transfer mechanism, which, for example, wireless networks need to successfully hand over calls when subscribers roam. PTP was standardized to provide this mechanism. However, the relation between a network's "Master Clock," which synchronizes the "Slave Clocks" within the base stations, is mediated by switches and routers that introduce delays in transport. NEMs have addressed this issue by developing switches and routers with new functionality - "Transparent Clocks" - that modify PTP messages to correct for forwarding delays and ensure clock synchronization. Since accurate timing transfer is essential for wireless backhaul, carriers can now take advantage of cost-effective Ethernet technology using Transparent Clocks.

Agilent test results show that Transparent Clocks do not always correct accurately. Agilent's new test solution measures the Correction Factor Error, which enables NEMs to develop more accurate clocking devices and network operators to evaluate the effectiveness of those devices. This is a significant advantage because the errors can be in the order of microseconds. In addition, N2X can surround a system with many virtual Masters and thousands of virtual Slaves. This "Slave-Clock Scalability" enables users to emulate extreme and realistic network conditions. Leading NEMs and early-adopter network operators are already using a prototype of Agilent's tool to test their devices.

"Before wireless carriers move from traditional backhaul technologies to lower-cost Ethernet, they must ensure that calls won't be dropped, which requires accurate synchronization of base stations," said Toni Piwonka-Corle, general manager of Agilent's Data Networks Operation. "It is vital that the Transparent Clocks implemented in switches and routers throughout the network accurately correct for forwarding delays. Agilent's new test solution, which accurately measures the Correction Factor Error, signals the maturity of the standards and will accelerate the deployment of 1588v2 devices."

Agilent's solution also tests the performance of Boundary Clocks, which mediate the relation between a single Master and multiple Slaves in large networks. A Boundary Clock acts as a Slave to one Master and as Master to many Slaves.

The N5568A IEEE1588v2 Precision Timing Protocol Emulation software is available now. It complements the N5566A Synchronous Ethernet ESMC Emulation and G.8261 QuickTool to enhance Agilent's comprehensive Timing-over-Packet test solution.

The International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control and Communication (ISPCS) is the world's premier timing and synchronization event. Participants include Agilent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent, BECKHOFF Automation, Brilliant Telecom, Calnex Solutions, Cortina Systems, Freescale Semiconductor, Hirschmann Automation and Control, Huawei, Imsys Technologies, IXXAT Automation, Meinberg Funkuhren, National Instruments, OnTime Networks, Oregano Systems, Rockwell Automation, RuggedCom, Semtech Corporation, Spectracom, Symmetricom, Tellabs, Time and Frequency Solutions, Wintegra, Zarlink Semiconductor, and Zurich University of Applied Sciences.

For more information, visit www.agilent.com/find/n2x.
About Agilent Technologies

Agilent Technologies Inc.

Delphi's flexible diagnostic solutions help meet the needs of Ministry of Transportation (MOT) and National Car Tests (NCT) throughout Europe

PARIS, France — At Equip'Auto 2009 Delphi is showcasing a number of its customized versions of its standard Delphi diagnostic platform, including dedicated diagnostic solutions for Ministry of Transport (MOT) & National Car Tests (NCT) in various European countries such as the UK (VOSA), Belgium (GOCA) and Denmark. In all of these cases, Delphi has adapted its diagnostic platforms to satisfy the precise legal requirements of mandatory car tests in each country while still using its standard hardware and communication platforms.

"It has always been our strategy to adapt our software to meet the changing needs of the service and repair market, negating the need for expensive hardware changes or purchases for our customers," said Lucia Moretti, Vice President, Delphi Product & Service Solutions, EMEA. "This ensures our customers can get the maximum amount of usability and return on their initial investment."

In addition to the MOT software enhancements, Delphi is launching a Diagnostic Solution specifically for the Crash Repair Markets in conjunction with Thatcham, also known as The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre. Thatcham was established in 1969 by British insurers to provide a unique range of products and services to the insurance and motor repair industries. Thatcham conducts research and produce data that assists technicians in the efficient, safe and cost effective repair of motor vehicles.

Delphi & Thatcham have joined forces to provide essential diagnostic equipment, functionality and training for Accident Repair Centres (ARC). Historically, the vast majority of Accident Repair Centres are mechanically orientated and as such, many are outsourcing even basic diagnostic work, e.g. SLR, Read / Erase Fault Codes, MIL resetting, etc. Delphi has developed a customized diagnostic software & hardware solution specifically for Thatcham and its Accident Repair Centres' customers that links to Thatcham's existing technical data software.

"Following a review of automotive diagnostic and service providers, we chose to partner with Delphi," explained Jason Moseley, Chief Operating Officer, Thatcham. "Delphi's flexible diagnostic solution and comprehensive support programme will enable Thatcham to introduce a very easy- to-use but extremely powerful and effective diagnostic solution for Crash Repair businesses. Delphi and Thatcham are perfectly positioned to help the accident repair and motor insurance sectors meet the daily challenges they face due to the growing complexity of vehicle electronics and diagnostics on modern vehicles.

In addition to these exciting customized solutions Delphi is continuing to increase its vehicle coverage on its existing Diagnostic range — targeting 20% growth year over year.

In 2009:

    * Delphi has greatly enhanced its application coverage with an important focus on the coverage depth.
* No less than 6 new vehicle manufacturers' specific diagnostic protocols were introduced so far this year — Chrysler, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Iveco, Dodge and SsangYong, and a new software update is yet to be released this year.
* Delphi enhances its diagnostic tools capacity with the introduction at Equip'Auto 2009 of heavy duty vehicle protocols.

"The ongoing & comprehensive developments to our existing diagnostic products and the development of new customized solutions for specific customers and market segments, clearly demonstrate Delphi's ability to adapt to the challenges of the automotive aftermarket and our commitment to our customers and the industry," said Kevin Kelly, service business line manager, Delphi Product & Service Solutions, EMEA.

For more information, visit Delphi's Media Room at www.delphi.com/media.

— WebWireID105423 —

Automotive

Electronic Design Automation

Electronics

Machinery

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

CIOs in the Most Successful Midmarket Organizations Actively Capitalize on New Technologies

ARMONK, N.Y. - A new global study of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) by IBM (NYSE: IBM) reveals that the top technologies for enhancing competitiveness over the next five years at high-growth midsize organizations are business intelligence and analytics and self service portals. Eighty-six percent of midmarket CIOs identified business intelligence and analytics - the ability to see patterns in vast amounts of data and extract actionable insights - and three-quarters chose self service portals.

These results and other findings are detailed in the Midmarket Executive Summary, which is part of the 2009 Global Chief Information Officer Study, the largest face-to-face survey of CIOs ever conducted. The study, titled "The New Voice of the CIO," represents the insights and vision of more than 2,500 CIOs worldwide, including 158 CIOs in 31 countries employed at midsize organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees. The Midmarket Executive Summary illustrates the increasingly strategic organizational roles that CIOs play in areas such as setting strategy, enabling flexibility and change, and solving business problems.

As part of the research, the study looked at the difference between the responses of CIOs from organizations with high growth in profits before tax and CIOs from organizations with low growth. The findings revealed that all CIOs must juggle several complementary, yet sometimes conflicting, roles, but that CIOs at high-growth midsize organizations are especially proactive about championing innovation and co-creating business strategy.

Other key findings of the study include:

    * Midmarket CIOs are braced for continued volatility - more than half (55 percent) anticipate changing their business models over the next three years;
* More than half of midmarket CIOs are active in developing business strategy, a number that drops to 33 percent when midsize and larger organizations are combined;
* The most successful CIOs at midsize organizations spend close to two-thirds of their time on activities that spur innovation;
* Fifty-eight percent of high-growth companies are focused on turning mountains of information into insight and actionable information, versus 43 percent of low-growth companies.

"Today's economy is driving a period of unprecedented change, which the most successful CIOs at midsize organizations are embracing," said Marc Dupaquier, general manager, IBM Global Midmarket. "They view technology as an enabler for solving problems in today's smaller, flatter and smarter world. Today it's not about how big you are, but about how smart you operate."

As CIOs in midsize organizations play an increasingly strategic role, they continue to seek new avenues for IT to produce greater business value. However, this must be balanced by an often competing pressure to lower costs and increase efficiency. In this study, midmarket CIOs in high-growth organizations are creating value by proactively turning the data their organizations hold into information that can be used to develop better products and services.

They are also taking the lead when it comes to exploring new ways of finding and interacting with customers.
