Seoul.- Yong Nam, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Electronics (LG), deliv-ered a special speech today under the theme of 'Korean and Korea, Inc: Past, Present and Fu-ture' at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. In the speech, he focused on the rapid growth of Korean companies and highlighted three key chal-lenges facing Korean firms going forward.

Earlier in September, Mr. Nam accepted the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship on behalf of LG Electronics employees at a ceremony held in Seoul. Lee H. Hamilton, President and Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, government officials, scholars and members of economic organizations were present in the audience. Mr. Nam joins a select group of high-profile figures who have spoken at the Woodrow Wilson International Center.

'Korea's GDP per capita is now approximately USD20,000, which is remarkable growth from only USD100 in the 1960s,' Mr. Nam said. 'Total GDP has also increased six times in the nearly four decades since 1970 and the rate of growth is ranked second only after China in Asia.'

Mr. Nam said sales from Korea's ten biggest companies amounted to almost USD200 billion, with half being generated overseas. One-third of the employees of Korea's ten biggest compa-nies are located outside Korea. LG, for example, generates 85 percent of its total sales from 160 countries other than Korea while 56,000 employees -- two-thirds of LG's 84,000 global em-ployees -- are located outside Korea. Since CEO Nam took over the top office, LG Electronics has appointed six non-Korean C-suite executives. The number of non-Korean executives at LG stands at 10 percent, the highest among Korean companies.

LG CEO Nam warned against complacency and suggested three priorities for Korean companies to secure global leadership against the backdrop of Chinese or Indian powerhouses: improve-ment in labor productivity, expansion into services and solutions and investment in human re-sources. He emphasized that manufacturing-focused business portfolios should move towards services- and solutions–oriented models as new products are launched and existing products are commoditized.

'We won't stop globalizing the process, system or organization,' CEO Nam closed.

— WebWireID107043 —

Business Announcements

Consumer Electronics

Electronics

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Developers Win $10,000 Grand Prize, Exposure to Millions of Wireless Customers

Innovation ruled the show and the top prize in AT&T's annual Fast-Pitch contest during Fall CTIA. Earning the grand prize in the business category was HipVoice with its revolutionary Push-To-Talk application that works across carriers and devices. The technology enables workers to communicate simply and seamlessly between the office and the field.

IQ Engines grabbed the top consumer prize with its application that recognizes and labels photos, then monetizes these images by matching them to relevant retailers and advertisers. Their image labeling engine™ is fast, accurate and scalable. Using a mobile phone's camera, IQ Engine enables the user to point at any product to retrieve detailed information, reviews, prices, and purchase links. This application makes searching for product information effortless and fast.

HipVoice and IQ Engines were among the more than 200 mobile consumer and business software developers that participated in the Fast-Pitch Platinum Awards contest held at CTIA IT 2009 in San Diego. Each company earned a $10,000 prize in its category.

HipVoice, which recently had its application certified, will be featured online and in print versions of the AT&T Certified Solutions Catalog. On the consumer side, IQ Engines will have an opportunity to market its application through a range of AT&T's consumer distribution opportunities.

The Fall Fast-Pitch Platinum Awards offers many companies, both big and small, the opportunity to compete. 'To have an opportunity like this with a national carrier is very exciting,' said Darius Gandhi, VP of Business Development, HipVoice.

'Our technology comes from two years of research funded by the National Science Foundation. It is exciting to see our research in mobile visual search move to the market,' said Gerry Pesavento, CEO of IQ Engines.

The two runners-up in the business category were P.O.D. Verify's PODPAD and iVisit's SeeStar. The PODPAD solution uses wireless document imaging for field services and transportation by using a wireless phone and Verify's patented scanner. This enables the user to scan documents in a vehicle or office and transmit them to his or her company instantly. iVisit's SeeStar technology offers persons who are visually impaired a virtual "pair of eyes.' Live images are transmitted to a remote assistant who can view the images, describe the person's surroundings, indicate the location of landmarks and pathways to destinations, or recognize objects and print media.

The two runners-up in the consumer contest were Micello and Evernote. Micello is an application that provides a unique indoor location-based service for mobile devices. Millions of people today use mobile maps to navigate to their destination. Micello goes one step further by extending a map inside locations, such as convention centers, shopping malls, college campuses, airports, and theme parks. With Evernote if you can see it or think of it, Evernote can help you remember it. Type a text note, clip a web page, and snap a photo or grab a screenshot, Evernote will keep it all safe. Everything captured is indexed and easily searchable.

Each of the runners-up received a $5,000 cash award.

Contestants were invited to present their applications to a panel of judges that determined which application would make the cut for potential placement on AT&T's wireless network. The judges based their decisions on several factors, including innovation and originality of the application, market appeal, interface design, and number of platforms and handsets supported.

'The Fast-Pitch program is not only a great platform for these up-and-coming developers, it helps ensure that AT&T can continue to give its customers convenient access to some of the most innovative wireless applications out there,' said Carolyn Billings, executive director, developer marketing, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. 'We're grateful to all of the participants in this year's contest, and extend our congratulations to the winners.'

AT&T is the first major wireless carrier to create a developer relations program and now has more than 20,000 developers registered in its program. AT&T offers its customers all of the world's major mobile operating systems, working with developers to create applications and content for BlackBerry®, iPhone, Java, Microsoft Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian.

All of AT&T's mobile applications operate on its GSM network, the world standard in mobile communications used by more than 88 percent of wireless users worldwide. GSM is inherently open, making it easy for developers and carriers to bring innovative applications to consumers.

— WebWireID106972 —

Business Announcements

Consumer Electronics

Mobile Communications

Telecommunications

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Company sets goal to reduce annualized operating expenses and production overheads by EUR 500 million by end 2011 compared to end 2009

Espoo, Finland - Nokia Siemens Networks today announced its plan to improve financial performance and return to growth. The plan includes reorganizing the company's business units to better align with customer needs; extensive operating expense and production overhead reduction, including a global personnel review; ongoing purchasing savings; expanded partnering to ensure a full portfolio of world-class products and services; and potential acquisitions where assets would add scale to existing product areas or customer relationships.

"As our customers make purchasing decisions, they want a partner who engages in issues well beyond a traditional discussion of technology," said Rajeev Suri, chief executive officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. "Business models, innovation, growth and transformation are now very much front and center when it comes to the selection of a technology partner - and our planned new structure will position us well in this changing market."

Reorganization

The Company's five business units are planned to be realigned into three, each targeting a specific customer focus area. The planned new business units, which are expected to come into effect on January 1, 2010, are:

- Business Solutions, which will focus on helping customers generate new revenue and differentiate from the competition by providing a faster time to market for end-user services; enhancing billing and charging capability; automating and simplifying processes; addressing the challenges of convergence; and tapping into rich subscriber data to deliver a unique customer experience. Jürgen Walter, currently head of the company's Converged Core business unit, will assume leadership of the Business Solutions organization.

- Network Systems, which will focus on providing both fixed and mobile network infrastructure, including the company's innovative Flexi base stations, core products, optical transport systems, and broadband access equipment. Marc Rouanne, currently head of the company's Radio Access business unit, will assume leadership of the Network Systems organization.

- Global Services, which will focus on helping customers improve operational efficiency through outsourcing of their non-core activities; supporting and managing their networks with robust customer care offerings; and ensuring fast and cost-effective implementation of new networks and network upgrades. Ashish Chowdhary, currently head of the company's Services business, will assume leadership of the Global Services organization.

Rouanne and Walter will join the Company's Executive Board, effective January 1, 2010. Chowdhary is already a member of the Executive Board and will remain so in his new role.

Cost reductions

Despite having fully achieved the original merger integration savings objectives of Nokia Siemens Networks, changes in the global economy and competitive environment make further cost reductions necessary. As a result, Nokia Siemens Networks will target a reduction of annualized operating expenses and production overheads of EUR 500 million by the end of 2011 compared to the end of 2009. The company estimates that total charges associated with these reductions will be in the range of EUR 550 million over the course of 2010-2011.

The operating expense and production overhead savings are expected to come from a wide range of areas, including real estate, information technology, site optimization, strategic workforce rebalancing, and overall general and administrative expenses. As part of this effort, the company will also conduct a global personnel review which may lead to headcount reductions in the range of about 7-9 percent of its current approximately 64,000 employees.

Specific country impact may be higher or lower than the now estimated global 7-9 percent range and the company will only provide further details related to this intended action when the review and planning process has progressed and employee representatives have been involved where required. As the stability of customer relationships is a key priority, disruption to key customer-facing sales positions as a result of this review is expected to be limited.

In addition to the operating expense and production overhead savings, Nokia Siemens Networks will target an annual reduction in product and service procurement costs related to cost of goods sold that is substantially larger than the targeted EUR 500 million in operating expenses and production overhead reductions. This targeted reduction is expected to position the company to meet ongoing customer requirements for competitive pricing.

Partnerships and acquisitions

Nokia Siemens Networks will seek to further strengthen its business through partnerships and acquisitions. The Company already has a range of partnerships, including with Juniper Networks in the Carrier Ethernet transport arena.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also pursue acquisitions when assets are available and the associated purchase price of those assets provides the appropriate value. In particular, the Company will target assets that enhance the scale of existing product and service business lines and that deepen relationships with key customers.

"We recognize that we are operating in a market where customer needs are evolving fast," said Mika Vehvilainen, chief operating officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. "We see acquisitions and expanded partnering as important tools to help meet these needs in the fastest, most efficient way possible."

About Nokia Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks is a leading global enabler of telecommunications services.

M14K™ and M14Kc™ Cores Combine High Performance, Compact Area and Low Power for Microcontroller and Low-Footprint Embedded Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores, today introduced a new core family providing the highest levels of system performance for extremely cost-sensitive embedded applications such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), home entertainment, personal entertainment and home networking. The new MIPS32® M14KTM and M14KcTM cores are the first MIPS32-compatible cores that also execute the new microMIPSTM instruction set architecture (ISA), achieving high performance of
1.5 DMIPS/MHz with an advanced level of code compression. The microMIPS ISA maintains 98% of MIPS32 performance while reducing code size by 35%, translating to significant silicon cost savings.

According to Art Swift, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies, "Growing amounts of signal processing and higher speed connectivity are driving up the performance requirements in MCUs and many cost-sensitive embedded applications, while still requiring a very small silicon footprint. We're enabling our customers to develop high-performance devices in smaller form factors to significantly decrease development costs. We're pleased to enhance and expand our offering for MCU and system designers with these groundbreaking new cores."

"MCUs continue to migrate towards 32-bit to address the needs of more sophisticated, performance-intensive applications," said Tony Massimini, chief of technology, Semico Research. "Processors that support 32-bit MCUs and other high-performance, low-footprint embedded devices must not only provide the requisite performance and right feature set, but they also need to be extremely compact to keep flash memory and silicon costs down. This enables smaller die area which allows for further integration. The specifications of the new M14K cores suggest great promise for the next generation of these devices."

The M14K Core for Microcontrollers

The M14K core combines high performance with an advanced level of code compression for the 32-bit MCU market, achieving performance of 1.5 DMIPS/MHz and 180 MHz in 130nm. The M14K core offers advanced features that are optimized for MCU and real-time embedded applications, including reduced interrupt latency, flash acceleration, advanced debug features including iFlowTraceTM and support for AHB Lite as the interconnect interface. Designed on the MIPS32 4K® micro-architecture that is already proven in hundreds of millions of SoCs, the M14K core is highly configurable and extendable, offering a wide range of implementation options to minimize cost and maximize reusability.

"Microchip is delighted to see continued innovation and commitment from MIPS Technologies in the 32-bit MCU market. The new M14K and M14Kc cores, and the microMIPS ISA offer enhancements important to MCU users, including even faster interrupt latency and smaller code size," said Sumit Mitra, vice president, High Performance Microcontroller Division, Microchip Technology. "Microchip is pleased with the enthusiastic acceptance of its MIPS-based PIC32 MCU family offering best-in-class performance. As with our 8-bit and 16-bit microcontroller businesses, Microchip is committed to a long term roadmap with our MIPS-based 32-bit MCU products."

The M14Kc Core for High Performance, Low Footprint Applications

The M14Kc core builds on the base M14K core with additional features for embedded applications such as home entertainment, home networking and personal mobile entertainment. These applications require a compact footprint but also the ability to execute increasingly complex software algorithms on an RTOS or Linux. Based on the popular MIPS32 4KEcTM micro-architecture, which provides a powerful Linux and Java engine and superior performance for the Android platform, the M14Kc core has a full cache controller and translation lookaside buffer (TLB) memory management unit (MMU).

microMIPS ISA for Advanced Code Compression

At the heart of the M14K and M14Kc cores is the new microMIPS ISA that offers 32-bit performance with 16-bit code size for most instructions. The microMIPS ISA combines recoded and new 16- and 32-bit instructions to achieve an ideal balance of performance and code density. It incorporates all MIPS32 instructions and Application Specific Extensions (ASEs) including MIPS-3D® ASE, MIPS DSP ASE, MIPS MT ASE and SmartMIPS® ASE, as well as new instructions for advanced code size reduction. The microMIPS ISA is backward compatible, enabling reuse of optimized MIPS micro-architecture. With smaller memory accesses and efficient use of the instruction cache, the microMIPS ISA also helps to reduce system power consumption.

Ecosystem and Tool Support

MIPS Technologies is providing complete software development tool support for the new M14K and M14Kc cores, with the Eclipse-based MIPS NavigatorTM Integrated Component Suite (ICS) and System NavigatorTM probes for debugging. MIPS Technologies is also working with leading third party software vendors for broad tool and OS support.

"With Sourcery G++TM, CodeSourcery's industry-leading software development environment based on the GNU Toolchain and the Eclipse IDE, we already support the entire range of MIPS32 cores, and we will soon be providing support for the M14K and M14Kc cores (including the new MicroMIPS ISA) as well," said Mark Mitchell, chief sourcerer, CodeSourcery. "We are pleased to continue our partnership with MIPS Technologies to deliver the tools MIPS developers need to quickly bring products to market."

"The new MIPS32 M14K and M14Kc cores and microMIPS ISA provide the ultimate platforms to leverage the low power and high performance characteristics of the Nucleus OS," said Glenn Perry, general manager of the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics. "Combining cores like the M14Kc with Mentor's multiOS solutions for Linux, Android and Nucleus will enable our mutual customers to develop innovative multi-OS solutions with world-class support and performance quality from Mentor Graphics."

"Express Logic's ThreadX® RTOS is ideal for deeply embedded systems where small code size and real-time performance are critical, and the microMIPS ISA appears to be a great fit for enabling the next generation of these systems," said William E. Lamie, president and CEO ExpressLogic. "With ThreadX on MIPS cores, developers have a powerful solution to help them get to market quickly. We have worked closely with MIPS Technologies for many years, and we're continuing that work with them on microMIPS and the M14K family."

"Micrium currently provides embedded software support for the MIPS32 architecture with our small-footprint µC/OS-II RTOS," said Christian Legare, Micrium vice president. "Micrium is known for saving precious design time, resulting in a substantial cost advantage for such embedded applications as industrial, medical and automotive. With its M14K core, MIPS Technologies offers a unique value proposition for developers in these markets. Micrium recognizes the benefits and importance of porting to the M14K core."

"We recently announced support for MIPS32 cores in our new MontaVista Linux 6 Market Specific Distributions (MSDs), offering a tailored combination of features and functionality specific for those cores. MontaVista Linux 6 will also provide support for the M14Kc core to enable MIPS developers to quickly create differentiated products by building on an optimized, commercial-quality embedded Linux," said Scott Mullarkey, vice president, worldwide business development, MontaVista Software.

"With Timesys LinuxLink support for the complete family of MIPS32 cores, including the new M14Kc core, MIPS Technologies' licensees can provide Linux solutions for their processors and reference platforms within days," said Maciej Halasz, director of product management at Timesys. "Licensees can quickly assemble Linux images for reference kits, while their OEM customers can accelerate their time-to-market and build Linux-based products for a wide range of applications through the unique productivity features in the LinuxLink software development framework. We are pleased to extend our comprehensive support for the MIPS architecture by adding LinuxLink support for this new core."

Simulation Support

MIPS will also provide both accurate and fast simulation models for the M14K and M14Kc cores. SoC developers can leverage 100% cycle accurate models-built with technology from Carbon Design Systems-for verification in SystemC and co-simulation environments. Software developers can also take advantage of fast instruction set simulators-developed in conjunction with Imperas-for use in software development and virtual platforms.

"We are pleased to provide MIPS Technologies with our Carbon Model Studio tools to generate cycle accurate models of its new cores," said Bill Neifert, CTO and vice president, business development, Carbon Design Systems. "With models of the M14K and M14Kc cores created using Carbon's leading technology, SoC developers get 100 percent cycle accurate models that work in many different design environments, enabling accurate architectural analysis and pre-silicon performance analysis."

"We are working together with MIPS to create MIPS-VerifiedTM instruction-accurate models of its newest cores that MIPS will provide to its licensees," said Simon Davidmann, CEO of Imperas. "With our instruction accurate simulation technology and these models, developers can simulate complete embedded systems running real application code at very fast speeds on typical desktop PCs-helping them get to market quickly at the lowest possible cost."

Availability

The new M14K and M14Kc cores will be available in the first quarter of 2010. (NYSE: MOT), a pioneer in the mobile industry, today unveiled DROID by Motorola, the first smartphone powered by Android™ 2.0. DROID by Motorola features the brainpower and breakneck speed of a modern smartphone, designed to outperform where other smartphones fall short.

'We're proud to work with Verizon Wireless and Google™ on the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0,' said Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices. 'DROID by Motorola delivers a rich consumer experience with warp-speed Web browsing, a mammoth screen, and Motorola's expertise in design and voice quality. Boasting a width of 854 pixels to reduce the need for side-to-side panning and more than 400,000 pixels total, DROID has more than twice that of the leading competitor.
* Run multiple applications at once: Customize your DROID with thousands of applications and hundreds of widgets available on Android Market™. Toggle back and forth between up to six applications at a time to juggle the universe and your apps.
* Perform Google Search™ at the speed of sound: Simply tell DROID what you're looking for using voice-activated search, and it will serve up Google search results based on your location. If you want more, simply type what you're looking for into the search bar on the home screen and DROID will also search content on your phone, such as apps and contacts, and the Web.
* Capture moments: Snap digital camera-quality photos with a 5 megapixel camera loaded with the works, such as a dual-LED flash, AutoFocus and image stabilization, or capture your friend's antics in 16 million colors with DVD-quality video capture and playback. Store it all on the included 16 GB memory card, so you always have it on hand.
* Multi-task like a master: Keep tabs on all your messages with integrated Gmail™ and Exchange e-mail pushed directly to you, but don't let them get in your way. With the handy Android notification panel, go straight to the message or simply ignore it, and get back to the task at hand. And, a smart dictionary learns as you type and automatically includes your contacts.
* Get where you need to go with Google Maps Navigation (Beta): DROID is the first device with Google Maps Navigation, providing turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free feature of Google Maps. It's powered by Google and connected to the Internet. Use voice shortcuts and simply say 'Navigate to [your destination],' and you'll be on your way. See live traffic, use Street View or satellite imagery to view your route, and get access to the most recent maps and business information from Google Maps without ever needing to update your device.

Pre-loaded Applications and Enhancements to Google Mobile Services:

    * Google Maps: With layers in Google Maps, view geographic information, such as My Maps, Wikipedia, and transit lines, right on the map.
* Gmail: Multiple accounts support and undo for common operations.
* YouTube™: One-touch recording and playback from homescreen widget or app, one-touch sharing with friends, and the ability to view your own uploaded videos and high-resolution videos.
* Google Talk™: Easily switch between chats, search your chat history, and preview pictures and videos sent by links.
* Android Market: Browse and download applications created by third-party developers.
* Calendar: Ability to see who has R.S.V.P.'d to your meeting invitations.
* Amazon MP3 Store: Download the latest tracks over the air.
* Verizon Wireless Visual Voice Mail: Delete, reply and forward voice mail messages without having to listen to prior messages or voice instructions.

Pricing and Availability:

    * DROID by Motorola will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online on Friday, Nov. 6, for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate.
