New "super coating" hints at how smart materials, nanotechnology will influence future design of office and production products

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tasked with developing ways to extend the lifespan of printer components - and reduce their impact on the environment - a group of scientists at Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) have developed a new chemical armor that protects photoreceptors, the light-sensitive elements in xerographic machines. Protected from normal wear and tear, a photoreceptor coated with the new "armor" can survive more than one million revolutions - nearly doubling its usable life.

"The long life of the photoreceptor reduces the need for replacement cartridges, enabling a 33 percent reduction in waste," said Yonn Rasmussen, vice president of the Xerographic Component Systems Group. "Customers experience less down time, and therefore reduced interruptions to work flow, improved productivity, and fewer service calls."

Photoreceptors are multi-layer thin film devices that convert light into electrostatic images. They must be replaced periodically due to surface wear and scratches that can affect image quality.

"This novel long life overcoat is an example of cutting-edge chemistry at work that required both materials and process innovation," said Giuseppa DiPaola-Baranyi, laboratory manager for Materials Integration at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada. "The ultimate goal is to develop photoreceptors that will last the entire life of the machine. For example, when you scratch your hand and you heal, that's a biological process. We are looking at how to mimic nature and leverage our expertise in smart materials design and nanotechnology to create molecules for next-generation photoreceptors with self-healing capabilities."

The new photoreceptor works in the standard machine design with no additional hardware changes or added costs to the customer. This invention has broad applicability across Xerox's product portfolio and is being first implemented in the Xerox 4112™/4127™ light production monochrome printers.

A global, multi-disciplinary team from the Xerox Research Centre of Canada, the Xerographic Component Systems Group engineering team in Webster, N.Y. and the manufacturing team in Venray, The Netherlands, advanced the project from the pilot plant stage in Canada to production in Venray in less than one year, a record time for commercializing a new technology such as this.

— WebWireID107631 —

Chemical

Computer Peripherals

Consumer Electronics

Nanotechnology

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

With its ability to bring professional quality color printing in-house with low cost and outstanding printing options, the Dell 7130cdn includes a rich feature set, including numerous paper handling options, a powerful processor and robust memory. This allows the printer to print the first page (First Print Out Time) as quickly as 6.5 seconds in both mono and color. The Dell 7130cdn is available today in the US from $2,799 including one year Next Business Day (NBD) Onsite Service after Remote Diagnosis[ii].

'Dell's new commercial printers add to a compelling portfolio of business color and mono printers for organizations of all sizes,' said Keith Kmetz, Vice President of Hardcopy Peripherals Solutions and Services at IDC. 'The Dell 5130cdn revolutionizes speed and usability. And its user-friendly appeal makes it attractive to organizations looking for high quality color output at a low total cost of ownership.'

On the black and white printing front, Dell announced the Dell 3330dn, a single-function black and white performance printer that can print up to 40 letter pages per minute (ppm) (actual print speed will vary with use), with a monthly duty cycle up to 80,000 pages. Built for high performance printing needs, the Dell 3330dn packs work-horse reliability, and has paper drawer and memory expansion options that grow with increasing business demands. The Dell 3330dn is currently available from today in the US from $599 with 1 year Advanced Exchange Service[iii].

'Dell has always focused on efficiency, reducing costs and increasing productivity for businesses of all sizes, and today we have extended that same winning formula to the printing world,' said Mike Arterbury, Global Director Commercial Software & Peripherals at Dell Inc . 'Our portfolio of printers provides customers with valuable and affordable choices and low cost of printing, saving them time – and real money.'

'Dell's complete lineup of laser printers provide customers with outstanding value, world class reliability and ease of use to help them achieve more with less, with minimum downtime and complexity,' said C. K. Lim, General Manager of Dell's Global Imaging Business.

Dell printers are available direct from Dell and from Dell's more than 50,000 partners worldwide.

— WebWireID107505 —

Business Announcements

Computer Peripherals

Consumer Electronics

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

The ProSafe Plus Switch is NETGEAR's breakthrough offering that, for a slight premium over unmanaged switches, supports Quality of Service, VLANs and cable testing for better visibility and control of Ethernet networks

SAN JOSE, Calif. NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically innovative, branded networking solutions, today announced a revolutionary new category of switches designed for growing businesses with growing network needs. The new ProSafe® Plus Switch™ family empowers non-technical users with new capabilities to monitor and configure their network, helping them build a low cost network that takes advantage of big business network features.

This new family of switches includes two Fast Ethernet versions, the 16-port FS116E desktop switch and 24-port JFS524E rack-mounted switch, and one Gigabit Ethernet version, the 5-port GS105E desktop switch. At a very small cost premium over unmanaged switches, a Plus Switch delivers network monitoring, cable testing, traffic prioritization and network segmentation for better troubleshooting, security and resource allocation, making it far more powerful than unmanaged switches. Additionally, all of these switches utilize Green Ethernet features to significantly reduce the power required to operate, saving money and the environment.

'Businesses are relying more heavily on their networks as they deploy more Ethernet-based technologies such as VoIP, as well as Internet-based applications for email, calendaring and collaboration,' said Maggie Wu, NETGEAR's product line manager for SMB Switching Products. 'To support this trend, NETGEAR has created this simple yet powerful network switch for businesses. The ProSafe Plus Switch, as an upgrade from the simple connectivity of an unmanaged switch, offers our customers essential network features such as enhanced security, troubleshooting, traffic prioritization, segmentation and monitoring, all at an affordable price.'

Key Features
ProSafe Plus Switches enable these enhanced business features with easy-to-use configuration tools. The graphically based software utility enables users to manage network traffic, which has never been seen before in this level of switch. Quality of Service (QoS) features enables users to assign traffic priority based on physically connected ports or prioritize traffic by the types of data, such as streaming video and voice. With VLAN support for network segmentation and security, users can set up network groups to enhance security and use the network resources more efficiently. Plus Switches also offer cable testing capability for troubleshooting connectivity problems. Network diagnostic tools with cable testing capabilities often cost hundreds of dollars, but this capability is included with these new switches.

ProSafe Plus Switches are designed with ease-of-use in mind. They can be set up as plug-and-play switches, or be configured through a simple PC-based utility. The fan-less switches operate silently, making them ideal for placement in open work areas. The GS105E and FS116E are in compact, sturdy metal cases ideal for desktop placement, while the JFS524E can be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack.

Green Features
Similar to NETGEAR's existing line of 'green' switches, which includes the GS716T and GS724T Smart Switches among others, the new ProSafe Plus Switches consume up to 70 percent less power than their unmanaged equivalents. The FS116E and JFS524E are the industry's first Fast Ethernet switches to support this type of power reduction technology:

Auto Power-down – This mode reduces chip power in each Ethernet port when the signal from the copper link is not present, thus saving power, but instantly resumes normal operation when energy is detected. Auto Cable Length Detection – This enables the switch to use lower power if its connections cover a distance of less than 10 meters.

Like many other NETGEAR products for the home and SMB, Plus Switches come in packaging that is manufactured with at least 80 percent recycled material.

'With many business users running multiple, real-time applications on their networks, they need to be able to segment and prioritize traffic to ensure consistent performance,' said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst of enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research, an international market research and consulting firm specializing in data networking and telecom. 'NETGEAR's new line of ProSafe Plus Switches gives SMBs greater control over their networks at only a modest premium over unmanaged switches, thereby providing a good balance between features and price.'

Pricing and Availability
With full 24/7 technical support that connects customers directly with experienced switching experts, NETGEAR ProSafe Plus Switches (FS116E, JFS524E and GS105E) will give businesses a powerful new tool to organize their networks. All three Plus Switches are shipping now, and will be made available worldwide from value-added resellers, leading direct marketers, and e-commerce sites at estimated U.S. street prices starting from $70 for the GS105E, $90 for the FS116E and $110 for the JFS524E. All ProSafe products provide world-class reliability with a NETGEAR Lifetime Warranty and optional ProSupport Maintenance Packages.

— WebWireID107425 —

Business Announcements

Computer Hardware

Computer Peripherals

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

After one year of partnership, Lexmark International (NYSE: LXK) and Rhodia, the world leader in specialty chemicals, announced today the first results of Rhodia's worldwide printer fleet consolidation.

To overcome the difficulties of managing a multi-vendor, heterogeneous, aging printer fleet consisting of laser and inkjet printers, Rhodia launched the PRIMA (Print Management) project to respond to three main objectives:

    * Reduce printing costs by signing a global printing contract
* Improve user satisfaction by using homogenous, modern and future-proof devices
* Reduce the impact on the environment by consolidating and upgrading the printer fleet and multifunctional devices and by reducing the number of pages printed

Lexmark met the key criteria in Rhodia's list of requirements by proposing a printing strategy tailored to each of the group's entities and supporting the company in printing change management.

The objectives defined at the beginning of the project were achieved within a year of entering into the partnership with Lexmark:

    * The printing devices were consolidated and upgraded on 13 sites. The printer fleet went from 3,170 devices (83 percent personal printers, 17 percent network printers) to 630 new devices (12 percent personal printers, 88 percent network printers), which represents a reduction of 80 percent.
* By upgrading the printer fleet, printing the same number of pages consumes 68 percent less energy, and the number of ink cartridges has been reduced by 25 percent.
* The number of pages printed on operations sites has been reduced by 43 percent whereas the initial objective was 10 percent.
* Seventy-seven percent of the pages printed in black are printed two-sided, which reduced the paper consumption by about 60 percent.

By choosing Lexmark as the printing solutions partner, the initial financial goal to reduce the printing costs on each site by 20 percent was exceeded, and in most cases, was closer to 40 percent.

Lexmark's ability to help Rhodia reduce the environmental impact of office printing also contributed to the success of the project. The environmental impact was reduced in particular by:

    * Configuring two-sided printing by default to reduce the number of pages printed
* Setting up shared devices to replace the numerous personal printers

For example, at the Belle Etoile site, reducing the number of devices and the extensive use of the two-sided function decreased the number of printed pages from 177,000 to 108,000, and the amount of paper consumed each month by 534 kg.

"Lexmark's approach met all our expectations at the financial and environment levels by reducing our paper consumption by almost 60 percent," said Christine Peron, director of IT operations at Rhodia Europe. "We completed this project knowing that our business issues had been heard and understood. Lexmark also developed a printing strategy that was tailored to each of our sites and they helped us change our printing behavior all along."

"Lexmark has strategic partnerships with a number of enterprises around the world that are willing to optimize their printing infrastructures," said Marty Canning, Lexmark vice president and president of its Printing Solutions and Services Division. "Lexmark's approach 'Print Less, Save More' is well received by large international organizations that want to reduce paper waste, improve the efficiency of their document processes and reduce costs."

— WebWireID107302 —

Business Announcements

Computer Peripherals

Office Products

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Independent Testing Confirms Abilities of ProSecure STM Family of Appliances to Stop More Threats than Competing Mid-Market Business Solutions - - SAN JOSE, Calif. - ProSecure™, the specialist network ...

Independent Testing Confirms Abilities of ProSecure STM Family of Appliances to Stop More Threats than Competing Mid-Market Business Solutions

SAN JOSE, Calif. - ProSecure™, the specialist network security brand by NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically innovative, branded networking solutions, today announced the superior position of their products in the preliminary findings of an in-depth, independent industry assessment of spam filtering products conducted by Miercom. The ProSecure™ STM family of Web/Email Threat Management Appliances for medium-sized businesses proved in testing to stop over 50 percent more threats than competitive products tested. Testing focused on the ability of the solution to stop a variety of threats, including spam, email threats, URL filtering, and Miercom's Offensive Security Testing Suite. Preliminary testing is complete considering products from Cisco, NETGEAR and Barracuda Networks. Complete test findings for all products submitted for testing will publish on the Miercom website, http://www.miercom.com, in November 2009.

"This Spam Filtering Industry Assessment allows each vendor to submit best-of-breed products to compete in this independent test review. The test results provide customers with honest, objective and meaningful data by way of a competitive comparison matrix. We are impressed with the NETGEAR ProSecure product and its ability to thwart over 50 percent more threats than products tested to date. This superior security effectiveness score is a testament to the relative security the appliance provides compared to products from well established security vendors," said Robert Smithers, CEO of Miercom.

The preliminary findings by Miercom compared the ProSecure STM600 against the Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker, the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall, and the Barracuda Web Filter, and reveal that:

    * Miercom's Security Testing Suite, which measured Barracuda and ProSecure resistance against viruses, worms, trojans, vulnerability exploits and malware attacks over web protocols, showed ProSecure STM to outperform Barracuda in the assessment by a margin of at least 50 percent.
* Miercom's Email Threat Test, which measured Barracuda and ProSecure resistance against email threats, showed ProSecure STM successfully thwarted 99.4 percent of threats over email, including threats in the wild, outperforming Barracuda by a margin of 20 percent.
* Miercom's Anti-Spam Test, which measured Barracuda, Cisco, and ProSecure in resistance to spam, showed ProSecure to stop 99.8 percent of all spam, which was on par with both Cisco and Barracuda.

Detailed results of the Miercom testing are forthcoming in November 2009 and will be published on the Miercom website at http://www.miercom.com.

ProSecure customers fully appreciate the effectiveness with which STM appliances stop threats. "Implementing the ProSecure STM security appliance at the network's gateway has allowed us to establish a multi-layered IT security model. We found this to be an exceptionally easy security upgrade to implement," says John Pompay, CFO of Financial Services Volunteer Corps. "Since its deployment, the ProSecure STM Web/Email Threat Management Appliance has significantly reduced the number of malware and spyware infestations in our network. We are no longer spending hours every day troubleshooting malware-related issues on our systems. This has allowed Financial Services Volunteer Corps to focus on doing what it does best: building strong financial systems in emerging market countries, not mitigating IT security threats."

The STM300 and the STM600 are designed for networks hosting up to 300 and 600 users respectively. The STM appliance family is designed to sit in-line and filter all potential threats via email and the Web, as well as give administrators control over which sites can be visited. In addition to a wide range of security functions - including an enterprise-class anti-malware engine, zero-hour threat protection, the industry-leading anti-spam engine and an enterprise-class URL filter - the STM series now incorporates the following features:

Active Directory Integration – This feature enables network administrators to use active directory groups and users to create levels of URL filtering. In some cases, administrators may wish to deny access to particular websites for some employees, while enabling others to view them for specific purposes.

Email Quarantine – This feature enables administrators to store emails identified by the STM as spam on the appliance. Users may then retrieve these emails from the appliance when it is convenient to do so.

"Mid-sized businesses are an enormous opportunity for our channel partners and the STM solves a pressing need for their customers' networks," said Jason Leung, NETGEAR's senior product line manager for SMB Security. "The test results speak for themselves. ProSecure is serious about security.
