Helps Improve Info Security, Staff Productivity and Care Quality, and Can Eliminate Trade-Offs Between Data-Centered Info and Patient-Centered Care.

Dell announced a Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC) solution that is designed to eliminate the traditional trade-offs hospitals face between making patient information available to medical staff at the point of care and securing it in the data center to promote compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Data security is a legitimate concern for hospitals and patients. With an estimated average data breach cost of $202 per record1, or $4 to $20 million2 for recent hospital breaches -- hospitals must protect critical information from unauthorized access and use while at the same time sharing it at the point of care for diagnosis and coordination of patient care.

The proliferation of devices such as handhelds, laptops, tablets, carts and desktops—and applications—45 percent of hospitals manage more than 150 applications3 — adds to the complexity of the challenge and highlights the need for a solution. Hospital medical staffs can spend up to 60 minutes a day4 looking for the right workstation with the right applications to do their job. With labor accounting for almost 60 percent5 of hospital care costs and the costs to manage data breaches potentially running into the tens of millions of dollars, that's inefficiency that hospitals can no longer afford. Dell is helping members of the hospital staff work more efficiently by offering a virtual client solution that is easy for clinicians to use and IT teams to manage.

The News:

    * Dell Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC) Simplifies Management for IT and Info Access for Medical Professionals and helps improve information security, staff productivity and care quality.
o Data Security: Patient info and applications are protected and managed centrally in the data center
o Hassle-free, Convenient Access: MCC enables access to role-based applications and data from any device anywhere in the hospital. Single sign-on, session roaming and location awareness simplify interaction for clinicians. Silver Cross Hospital's 1,000 medical professionals are saving up to one hour a day per professional with convenient access to the applications and info they need to do their jobs
o Simplified Management: Applications are updated in minutes instead of hours. Silver Cross Hospital cut update time from 80 hours/application to 20 minutes. IT manages digital identities in the data center, not mobile devices on the hospital floor
* Shift from Managing Devices to Managing Identities. MCC simplifies info security and management for IT and information access for medical professionals by locking applications and patient info in the data center and shifting IT focus from managing a growing number of end-user devices to managing user 'digital identities.' Digital identities are a combination of user profile, preferences, applications and privileges that give medical professionals authorized access to applications from any device anywhere in the hospital. Medical professionals perform rounds without hunting for patient paper records or the right device for the job.
* Right Infrastructure for the Job. Dell creates a practical blueprint for the design, implementation and management of a virtual client network that works for the medical professional and for the hospital with the right combination of thin client, virtual desktop, laptop or handheld. IT and medical professionals are no longer locked in to a 'one size fits all' model of client computing.
* A Complete Information-Sharing Solution for Hospitals. Dell is providing a complete solution from design, validation and implementation of the MCC infrastructure, to integration of clients, servers and software with training and 24/7 service and support.
* Managed/Hosted Services. Dell Services, which includes the former Perot Systems, provides end-to-end MCC services including management and hosting to assist clients with any operational scenario. Private cloud solutions can be deployed via traditional capital or utility based expenditure models to optimize resources consumed rather than building idle capacity.
* Availability. MCC is available to hospitals in the U.S. and in Europe.

Quotes:

'A proliferation of applications, passwords and end-user equipment throughout the hospital challenged our caregivers and complicated IT's trouble shooting and technical support. To increase the simplicity and reliability of our technology, we needed a new approach,' said David Hillenmeyer, CIO of Silver Cross Hospital, a 300-bed acute care facility located in Joliet, Illinois and a Top 100 Hospital National Award winner five years in a row.

'With MCC, we enjoy five-nines application availability. We can push application updates to these 200 desktops in 20 minutes; a huge savings from the 80 hours it took previously,' said Mr. Hillenmeyer. 'Shorter logins and access to a complete application suite on each workstation is helping our medical professionals reclaim nearly 20,000 hours for patient care this year alone. The solution's roaming capabilities have simplified physician and nurse rounding and documentation. Single sign-on coupled with the swipe cards and proximity detectors enforces password compliance and provides another level of access controls. These added protections help ensure Silver Cross' commitment to patient confidentiality and data security.'

'It's not enough to digitize patient information. We must make it available to medical professionals at the point of care, whether that's in a hospital or in an affiliated physician practice,' said Dr. Jamie Coffin, vice president, Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences. 'Dell is focused on transforming HIT to harness the power of information across our healthcare system to better coordinate and improve patient care and reduce its cost.'

___________________

1 Ponemon Institute: 'Annual Cost of Data Breach Report,' 2009

2 Credant: 'Data Security & Compliance in the Healthcare Market,' 2009

3 HIMSS: 'Healthcare and Integration Survey,' 2008

4 Dell Silver Cross Hospital Case Study, April, 2009

5 American Hospital Association: Trendwatch Chartbook 2009

— WebWireID108216 —

Business Announcements

Computer Hardware

Computer Software

Health Care / Hospitals

Medical / Pharmaceuticals

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Open-source EtherNet/IP communication stack cost effectively connects devices - - MILWAUKEE, Rockwell Automation announced that it is supporting the release of a free, open-source EtherNet/IP software...

Open-source EtherNet/IP communication stack cost effectively connects devices

MILWAUKEE, Rockwell Automation announced that it is supporting the release of a free, open-source EtherNet/IP software stack for I/O adapter devices developed by the Vienna University of Technology. Designed to connect a wide range of products using open communication standards, developers can download the new license and royalty-free adapter stack through SourceForge.net (http://opener.sourceforge.net/).

The open-source communications stack was created and released to the global engineering community by the Odo Struger Laboratory team of researchers from the Vienna University of Technology's Automation and Control Institute. The stack is an open-source implementation of EtherNet/IP, an open network standard made available through ODVA. EtherNet/IP uses the proven Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) on standard, unmodified Ethernet to enable communications from I/O to IT, connecting factory-floor devices all the way up to business-level systems. Access to plant and production information allows users to effectively manage real-time control and information flow throughout the manufacturing and IT enterprise, which helps drive improved management and decision-making.

'An open-source stack with a support community gives industrial product developers a faster, more cost-effective way to integrate their products with CIP-based networks like EtherNet/IP,' said Harry Forbes of ARC Advisory Group. 'Using open source accelerates time to market, decreases software development risk, and reduces many costs of custom software development. In addition, the availability of a peer-reviewed open-source component for EtherNet/IP provides product suppliers with greater assurance of full interoperability.'

Developers can use the open-source adapter stack in a variety of EtherNet/IP I/O adapter-class products, including basic sensors, actuators, simple drives and I/O components. The lightweight, adapter-class stack is scalable and written in the widely used C programming language. Its modularity and flexibility make it ideal for developers seeking a low- or no-cost communication stack for simple EtherNet/IP products.

EtherNet/IP allows networks, including motion and safety, to communicate seamlessly on the factory floor, along with other common sets of IT capabilities like video, data and telephony. This results in a converged Ethernet architecture.

— WebWireID108202 —

Business Announcements

Computer Hardware

Computer Networks

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

PORTLAND, Ore. NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) and Mellanox Technologies Ltd. today introduced new software that will increase cluster application performance by as much as 30% by reducing the latency that occurs when communicating over Mellanox InfiniBand to servers equipped with NVIDIA Tesla™ GPUs.

The system architecture of a GPU-CPU server requires the CPU to initiate and manage memory transfers between the GPU and the InfiniBand network. The new software solution will enable Tesla GPUs to transfer data to pinned system memory that a Mellanox InfiniBand solution is able to read and transmit over the network. The result is increased overall system performance and efficiency.

"NVIDIA Tesla GPUs deliver large increases in performance across each node in a cluster, but in our production runs on TSUBAME 1 we have found that network communication becomes a bottleneck when using multiple GPUs," said Prof. Satoshi Matsuoka from Tokyo Institute of Technology. "Reducing the dependency on the CPU by using InfiniBand will deliver a major boost in performance in high performance GPU clusters, thanks to the work of NVIDIA and Mellanox, and will further enhance the architectural advances we will make in TSUBAME2.0."

'In GPU-based clusters, most of the compute intensive processing is running on the GPUs,' said Gilad Shainer, director of high performance computing and technical marketing at Mellanox Technologies. 'It's a natural evolution of the system architecture to enable GPUs to communicate more intelligently over InfiniBand. This helps create a computing platform that will enable future Exascale computing and dramatically increase performance for a broad spectrum of applications.'

'Anyone who cares about performance in their datacenter uses InfiniBand,' said Andy Keane, general manager, Tesla business at NVIDIA. 'This new feature will further improve application performance on GPU-based clusters by reducing the dependency on the CPU for communicating over InfiniBand.'

This software capability will be available in the NVIDIA CUDA™ architecture toolkit beginning in Q2 2010 and will work on existing Tesla S1070 1U computing systems and Tesla M1060 module-based clusters and also with the new Tesla 20-series S2050 and S2070 1U systems.

— WebWireID108187 —

Business Announcements

Computer Hardware

Semiconductors

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

News Highlights

    * Researchers at a new European Intel lab will explore computers with a thousand times the performance of today's fastest supercomputers.
* Effort is part of Intel Labs Europe, Intel's research network of 900 researchers in the European region.
* Intel has committed a multi-million Euro investment toward a new lab. CEA, UVSQ and GENCI will jointly match Intel's contribution.

PARIS - Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique, Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif, Intel Corporation and Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines have entered into an agreement to create an Exascale Computing Research Center. Part of Intel's European research network - Intel Labs Europe – the center will explore how to build high-performance computing systems with a thousand times the performance of today's fastest supercomputers. The term "exascale" refers to computers that are able to process 1 trillion – or 1 million million million – instructions per second.

Intel will support the Exascale Computing Research Center with a multi-million Euro investment over a 3-year period. The French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique), the Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University (Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) and the French National High-Performance Computing Agency (Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif) will combine to match Intel's contribution. This is Intel's first joint lab in Europe focused exclusively on high-performance computing. It will complement and extend Intel's existing high-performance computing research programs, investments and initiatives, including the Intel Academic Community Program and European Space Agency's "Mapping the Globe from Space" project.

"France has taken a leading role in driving high-performance computing research in Europe," said Steve Pawlowski, Intel senior fellow and general manager of Intel Architecture Group's central architecture and planning. "We chose to work with these three organizations because of their world-class software competency in exascale and high- performance computing."

The research agenda of the Exascale Computing Research Center will include integrating multi petaFLOPS systems, developing advanced performance optimization techniques, and collaborating with end users to optimize supercomputer performance in areas such as energy, seismology, computational fluid dynamics and health care.

The advent of exascale is expected to enable supercomputers to solve much more complex problems than today. For example in health care this capability should enable highly sophisticated genome calculations, enabling individualized patient treatment, or simulation of cell interactions to provide new cancer treatments. Another application can be found in seismology where exascale computing could enable more detailed prediction of ground movement at sites with high security requirements or where frequent movement is expected. In climate modeling, more accurate long-term forecasts and much more detailed local weather forecasts could be made.

The Exascale Computing Research Center will combine French research expertise and high-performance computing vision with Intel's leading products, technologies and experience in this area. The lab will employ about a dozen people initially and is expected to eventually grow to about three times that number.

Intel has a rich history of innovation and creativity in Europe with research and development programs encompassing areas such as chip design, software development, mobile communications and services, atomic-level chip research, development of key Intel products, and research on technologies that could help the aging population to lead healthier, better lives.

Intel's research and development efforts include Intel-owned labs focused on development of Intel products, joint research with European universities, open innovation and collaboration with industry and academia, participation in EU framework programs and cooperative standards development work with industry partners that deliver increased value and productivity to consumers.

About Intel Labs Europe
Intel R&D/Innovation in Europe is driven by a network of research labs, product labs and innovation labs spanning the region as well as a variety of Intel business units.

LSI Engenio 7900 HPC storage system combines reliable, high-speed data accessibility with high-capacity drive enclosures for maximum storage density

SC09, PORTLAND, Ore., LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that Météo France, the French national weather forecasting agency, has upgraded the performance and efficiency of its supercomputers by implementing an SGI® InfiniteStorage 4600 storage solution based on the LSITM Engenio® 7900 HPC storage system.

Météo France collects and stores extraordinarily large volumes of meteorological data about Earth's oceans, atmosphere and snow cover, which are then processed by a range of supercomputing applications including weather, marine and pollution forecasting. Météo France needed a new storage solution that could handle both existing data volumes and support data growth of 15 percent per year. The storage solution also had to enable daily data transfers of more than 16 terabytes between disk and tape and allow users to quickly browse through nearly ten million small files.

"The faster the supercomputer is able to write results, the more time and money we save," said Alain Beuraud, head of HPC and Storage Department at Météo France. "We needed reliable, high performance storage that could handle the enormous data volumes while also providing us with the flexibility to store less active or older data on cheaper media."

The SGI InfiniteStorage 4600 solution, based on the LSI Engenio 7900 HPC system technology, currently contains more than 400 terabytes of data and enables data transfer rates of up to 4 GB/s. To meet Météo France's annual data growth rates, the system offers initial capacity of up to one petabyte through a combination of Fibre Channel and high-capacity SATA drive enclosures.

The system's high-density LSI Engenio DE6900 SATA drive enclosure can house 60 3.5-inch SATA drives in a 4U space. The enclosure allows Météo France to more efficiently utilize its limited IT space, enabling a 480TB system to reside within a standard 19-inch rack. The high density offered by the DE6900 enclosure can reduce power consumption by more than 30 percent and floor space by more than 65 percent.

"LSI Engenio storage systems are trusted by leading OEMs and end users to deliver the performance and reliability required by the world's most demanding applications," said Steve Hochberg, senior director, worldwide HPC segment, LSI. "The combination of the low-cost, high-density SATA drive enclosure with the 7900 HPC storage system provides Météo France with exceptional price-performance, high scalability and significant cost savings through reduced power consumption and floor space."

The Engenio 7900 HPC storage system is architected for complex and high-bandwidth application environments that store and utilize vast amounts of data. The system combines industry-leading performance with advanced availability and reliability features designed to provide continuous high-speed data accessibility and protection across a wide range of HPC environments. Together, the 7900 HPC system and DE6900 enclosures enable users to implement a tiered storage solution by using both high-performance Fibre Channel drives and low-cost, high-capacity SATA drives.

The LSI Engenio 7900 HPC storage system with the DE6900 drive enclosure is available today through select OEM partners, including SGI. More information on the 7900 system is available at www.lsi.com/7900hpc.

About LSI

LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) is a leading provider of innovative silicon, systems and software technologies that enable products which seamlessly bring people, information and digital content together. The company offers a broad portfolio of capabilities and services including custom and standard product ICs, adapters, systems and software that are trusted by the world's best known brands to power leading solutions in the Storage and Networking markets.

PALO ALTO, Calif., HP today introduced a solution for backing up and recovering the growing volume of information stored locally on notebook and desktop PCs, enabling businesses to increase employee productivity, lower technology costs, and reduce compliance and legal risks associated with data loss.

With HP Data Protector Notebook Extension, businesses can back up and recover data outside the corporate network, even while working remotely and offline.

According to industry experts, 25 percent of the workforce is currently mobile (1) and, for the first time, shipments of notebooks have overtaken desktops (Q3 2008).(2) In addition, employees are increasingly saving vital company information outside of corporate networks, with more than 4,000 business files stored on the average PC.(3)

Organizations can face dramatic business risks if this critical data is lost through hard-drive failures or accidental file deletions. The cost of data loss can be potentially more than $400,000 annually for an average-size business with 5,000 users.(4)

HP Data Protector Notebook Extension addresses these challenges by expanding backup policies so local data is always protected, even when a user is working offline. Data is instantly captured and backed up automatically each time a user changes, creates or receives a file. Data is then stored temporarily in a local repository pending transfer to the network data vault for full backup and restore capabilities.

Businesses can reduce technology costs and increase employee productivity with the solution's continuous file protection, which provides nonstop, transparent and automated protection for information created locally. With single-click recovery, users can recover their own files without initiating help desks calls, thereby minimizing the burden on IT resources.

Businesses also can maximize bandwidth efficiency and better ensure security of information through HP Data Protector Notebook Extension's deduplication, data encryption and compression techniques. The user's storage footprint is reduced by deduplication of multiple copies of data. All of the user's data is then stored encrypted and compressed and the expired versions are cleaned up.

'Our most dynamic, cutting-edge business data is often stored on our employees' PCs and laptops,' said John Ferguson, network systems specialist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute of Buffalo, N.Y., America's first cancer center. 'We're managing data that relates to life-threatening diseases, such as data that could lead to a cure for cancer –¬¬ we can't afford to risk not using HP Data Protector Notebook Extension.'

HP also introduced HP Backup and Recovery Fast Track Services, a suite of scalable service engagements that help ensure a successful implementation of HP Data Protector and HP Data Protector Notebook Extension, improving the productivity of technical staff while allowing them to focus on core tasks and business priorities.

'Going to work no longer means going to an office – it may mean going to a coffee shop, an airport or a home office,' said Jonathan Martin, vice president and general manager, Information Management Software, HP. 'HP Data Protector Notebook Extension gives customers the peace of mind that they can always recover their data, offline, anywhere and at anytime.'

More information is available at www.hp.com/go/dpne.

About HP

HP creates new possibilities for technology to have a meaningful impact on people, businesses, governments and society. The world's largest technology company, HP brings together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, services and IT infrastructure to solve customer problems. More information about HP (NYSE: HPQ) is available at http://www.hp.com/.

(1) BPM Forum.

(2) IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, Q2 2009, August 2009.

(3) HP internal data.

(4) David Smith and Michael Williams, Pepperdine University, 2007.

— WebWireID107917 —

Computer Hardware

Computer Networks

Computer Software

Consumer Electronics

High Tech Security

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Transport Network Strategies Barcelona, Spain and Stockholm, Sweden - Transmode, a leading provider of optical networking solutions, today announced the availability of tunable XFP pluggable optics modules for both the TM-Series and TS-Series product families enabling greater flexibility and lower spare part holding costs for customers.

As the new 80-channel tunable DWDM 10G XFP modules have recently become available from component suppliers, Transmode has rapidly integrated these into both the TM-Series and TS-Series product families. These modules allow greater flexibility in planning, ordering, deployment and later network reconfiguration due to the ability of the modules to tune to any of the 80 DWDM wavelengths supported by the TM-Series or the 24 DWDM wavelengths supported by the TS-Series.

Additionally, these modules allow operators that hold inventory or spare part pools to keep a smaller number of modules as they no longer need to hold a large number of wavelength specific plug-in modules, therefore reducing cost.

Mohamad Ferej, Transmode's Vice President R&D commented, 'This rapid integration of tunable XFP technology into our portfolio reflects the good relationships that we have built up with our supplier partners over the years and Transmode's ability to respond quickly once a component technology reaches the right level of maturity and quality.'

'Transmode has been a long term supporter of pluggable optics and pushed hard for the initial Multi Source Agreement (MSA) standards to remove the need for wavelength specific versions of each type of line card. Our strong relationship with our suppliers has given us a head start over the competition in this important area of pluggable optics integration.'

Transmode's portfolio is an industry leader in terms of flexibility and pluggable optics integration with many industry firsts, including 2.5G CWDM/DWDM SFPs, 4G CWDM/DWDM SFPs, 10G CWDM/DWDM XFPs and recently 8G Fibre Channel XFPs for both CWDM and DWDM.

About Transmode

Transmode is a leading provider of optical networking solutions for transport of data, voice and video traffic, based on CWDM and DWDM technology (Coarse/Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing).

Transmode's unique Intelligent WDM (iWDM™) approach has lead to widespread deployment of over 10000 systems in a customer base consisting of more than 250 fixed and mobile network operators, service providers, large enterprises and public institutions across Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Transmode's comprehensive product portfolio and strong global organization enable our customers to grow the capacity and to improve service level of their regional, metro and metro access networks, on a cost-efficient basis without compromising on functionality.

For additional information about Transmode, please visit www.transmode.com

— WebWireID107832 —

Business Announcements

Computer Hardware

Computer Networks

Electronics

High Tech Security

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds
