     <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Las Vegas, Nevada, November 20, 2009 -- Cookbook author, Todd Wilbur got right to work when he heard that Kellogg Co. would not be able to fill store shelves with its popular brand of Eggo frozen waffles until the summer of 2010. In just a few hours Wilbur was able to recreate four varieties of the toaster-heated frozen waffles using common ingredients, and he is sharing his recipes for free on his website at <a href="http://www.topsecretrecipes.com" target="_blank">http://www.topsecretrecipes.com</a>. </p><p>According to the Associated Press, a September storm dumped historic amounts of rain that shut down Kellogg&#39;s Atlanta plant, and several production lines at the company&#39;s largest bakery in Rossville, Tennessee, are closed indefinitely for repairs. Company Spokeswoman Kris Charles said that it will take until the middle of 2010 before shelves around the country are stocked with Eggo waffles at pre-shutdown levels. </p><p>Already customers are noticing near-empty Eggo shelves on the freezer aisle at many grocery stores. On his website Wilbur writes, &#39;Fortunately, I was able to snag some of the last few boxes of several varieties of Eggos at a local Albertson&#39;s supermarket here in Las Vegas, and after a few hours in the lab I pounded out a brand-new clone recipe for all of you who will miss your Eggos.&#39; </p><p>Todd Wilbur is the best-selling author of a series of cookbooks featuring copycat recipes of popular brand-name foods. He has appeared on several talk shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Today, and Good Morning America.      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>WASHINGTON, DC - Scientists may not be able to tell a good book by its cover, but they now can tell the condition of an old book by its odor. In a report published in the American Chemical Society&#39;s Analytical Chemistry, a semi-monthly journal, they describe development of a new test that can measure the degradation of old books and precious historical documents on the basis of their aroma. The non-destructive &#39;sniff&#39; test could help libraries and museums preserve a range of prized paper-based objects, some of which are degrading rapidly due to advancing age, the scientists say.</p><p>Matija Strli&#38;#269; and colleagues note in the new study that the well-known musty smell of an old book, as readers leaf through the pages, is the result of hundreds of so-called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released into the air from the paper.</p><p>&#39;The aroma of an old book is familiar to every user of a traditional library,&#39; the report notes. &#39;A combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla over an underlying mustiness, this unmistakable smell is as much a part of the book as its contents. It is the result of the several hundred VOCs off-gassing from paper and the object in general. The particular blend of compounds is a result of a network of degradation pathways and is dependent on the original composition of the object including paper substrate, applied media, and binding.&#39;</p><p>Those substances hold clues to the paper&#39;s condition, they say. Conventional methods for analyzing library and archival materials involve removing samples of the document and then testing them with traditional laboratory equipment. But this approach involves damage to the document.</p><p>The new technique &#8212; an approach called &#39;material degradomics&#39; &#8212; analyzes the gases emitted by old books and documents without altering the documents themselves. The scientists used it to &#39;sniff&#39; 72 historical papers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the papers contained rosin (pine tar) and wood fiber, which are the most rapidly degrading types of paper found in old books. The scientists identified 15 VOCs that seem good candidates as markers to track the degradation of paper in order to optimize their preservation.      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Major Developments in E-Reader Market in 2009 Will Lead to Robust Growth in 2010</p><p>STAMFORD, Conn. - 2009 is likely to be remembered as a watershed year in the evolution of e-books and e-readers with several milestones and product launches standing out as catalysts for change in the market, according to Gartner, Inc. However, Gartner said that while the number of electronic readers sold is likely to increase in 2009, it expects 2010 to be the year when e-book readers really become popular consumer electronic devices, culminating in e-reader &#34;mania&#34; for the 2010 holiday season.</p><p>&#39;With the entry of new players, such as Barnes and Noble, into the e-reader market and an increase in models from Amazon and Sony, consumers began to have choices in single-purpose e-reading devices in 2009,&#39; said Allen Weiner, research vice president at Gartner. &#39;Among the product differentiation points are support for E Ink&#39;s electronic paper technology, support for further book formats, and the ability of some devices to allow consumers to purchase content wirelessly and to synchronize content across devices.&#39;</p><p>Mr. Weiner said that while fixed devices &#8212; those built solely for reading, such as Amazon&#39;s Kindle and Sony&#39;s family of devices &#8212; get most of the attention, book applications on smartphones are an important component of publishers&#39; digital strategy. However, Gartner believes that it is too early in the evolution of the e-reading market to know whether smartphones will become powerful stand-alone devices for reading books or whether they will complement other devices, such as fixed readers.</p><p>&#39;Book applications for smartphones have the potential to become a bridge to other devices such as tablet readers and netbooks,&#39; said Mr. Weiner. &#39;Apple, for example, could migrate the more than 500 book applications in the iTunes store to a tablet device and Google, which recently announced a browser-based e-reader, could offer applications for Android-based devices of various form factors.&#39;</p><p>There are a number of hurdles that need to be overcome before e-readers can become more mainstream, such as e-books needing a wider variety of retail channels, ranging from big box retailers and wireless carrier outlets to lifestyle stores such as Brookstone. More publishers must also be seen buying into e-readers. For example, there has been news about the success of e-book sales of Dan Brown&#39;s &#34;The Lost Symbol&#34;; however other noted authors such as John Grisham and J.K. Rowling do not have their works available as e-books.</p><p>Gartner said that price will also play a leading role in the future success of e-readers. The honor was given by the International Association of Emergency Managers during their annual conference in Orlando, Florida.  </p><p>Rick Tobin was the host and developer of the show in 2008 and 2009.  The program focused on aiding the public, business and government to increase their readiness each week for emergencies, disasters and other interruptions.  </p><p>At its closure, The Road to Ready had over 10,000 listeners each week.
