Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is the first in the US to have a deep water rated remotely operated vehicle. The vehicle they have chosen is Saab's Seaeye Falcon DR.

When an experimental plane crashed into the ocean off Catalina Island near Los Angeles, search and recovery proved impossible. The depth of water and strength of the currents made conditions too dangerous for divers. But since March this year, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) have had the 1000 metre rated remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Falcon DR, from Saab, ready for such investigations.

Significantly extended capability

Saab's Seaeye Falcon DR significantly extends the LASD's inspection and recovery capability, enabling the reach of larger areas offshore and around Los Angeles, and the possibility to undertake Homeland Security operations. The ROV will now aid the recovery of previously unrecoverable boats and aircraft, including an inspection of the Catalina site.
Contributing to diver safety

The Seaeye Falcon DR saves valuable dive time and contributes to diver safety. By using the Falcon's onboard camera and high intensity lights, the ROV operator can pinpoint what the diver cannot see and direct the diver to the location of interest. The ROV can also keep a watchful eye on the diver and transport the diver's tools and equipment. A range of tools and survey kit can easily be added to and changed for different missions, such as explosives detection.

The Seaeye Falcon DR is the second Falcon bought by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. The first was a 300 metre rated model used for rapid deployment during in-shore search and recovery operations.

— WebWireID108189 —

Aerospace / Defense

Airlines / Aviation

Government

Maritime / Marine

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Contract Valued At More than $28 Million

IntuVue Offers Improvement in Turbulence Detection, Reliability and Cost of Operations

DUBAI AIR SHOW, U.A.E., Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today its IntuVue 3-D advanced weather radar and seven other safety and information management products were selected by PT. Garuda Indonesia (Persero).

The products will be standard on 25 B737-800 aircraft delivered between mid 2009 and 2011. The contract, valued at more than $28 million, includes an option for 25 additional aircraft.

'The selection of IntuVue is a testament to PT. Garuda Indonesia's emphasis on safety,' said Mike Madsen, Vice President, Airlines, Honeywell Aerospace. 'Honeywell's IntuVue weather radar is leading the industry in turbulence and wind shear detection, a key component of safety related incidents. It is important we solve our airline partner needs with equipment that helps them increase safety and reduce operating costs.'

The total avionics package includes Honeywell's IntuVue; partial Quantum™ line of communication and navigation sensors comprising Multi Mode Receiver (MMR), Radio Altimeter and Automatic Direction Finder (ADF); the CAS 100 aircraft collision avoidance system, solid-state data recorders and voice recorders, Flight Data Acquisition and Management System (FDAMS), airborne data loader, the cockpit data printer and the Automatic Fixed Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).

IntuVue is the first fully automatic weather radar system certified to the FAA's Enhanced Turbulence Detection Minimum Operation Performance Standard (MOPS), improving pilots' ability to see and avoid weather, wind shears and turbulence sooner. Specific turbulence-related injuries cost the airline industry more than $100 million a year.

IntuVue is the only commercial radar that displays storms in three-dimensions at up to 320 nautical miles ahead of the aircraft and key analysis tools which allow pilots to dissect and analyze weather and hazards both vertically and horizontally. These features have demonstrated a significant improvement for in-flight weather-related decisions, and more than a 45 percent improvement in turbulence detection, enabling pilots' to optimally reroute around or through weather for passenger safety and comfort while decreasing fuel burn. Besides enhanced safety, IntuVue offers improved reliability and reduces system weight to lower operating costs for operators. IntuVue increases system reliability by 50 percent, reduces maintenance costs by 30 percent, and reduces weight by 25 percent as compared to other radars — yielding airlines a $10,000/year savings over existing systems.

Honeywell's IntuVue is certified and flying on the Boeing 777 and 737NG as buyer furnished equipment and is standard equipment on the Airbus A380.

Bombardier Aerospace today celebrated another major milestone in the CSeries aircraft programme as construction got under way on its new state-of-the-art aircraft wing manufacturing and assembly facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

'This is another significant milestone in the ongoing development of the CSeries aircraft programme. In August, the test fuselage barrel arrived ahead of schedule at our St-Laurent, Québec site, from China, and in September we celebrated the groundbreaking of our first CSeries aircraft manufacturing building in Mirabel, Québec. The CSeries aircraft programme is progressing well and to schedule, and we look forward to receiving the first test wing from Belfast in 2011,' said Guy Hachey, President and Chief Operating Officer, Bombardier Aerospace.

The new 600,000 sq ft (55,742 m2) factory is being built in two phases and will incorporate an existing production building. The facility's design and layout are being optimised both for the production process and to minimise environmental impact. The structure will ensure maximum energy efficiency, and will incorporate low energy solutions into its mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Waste management was also a key consideration in the design, with a particular focus being given to waste segregation and recycling.

Joining Michael Ryan, Vice President and General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast to lay a special corner stone to mark the construction was Northern Ireland Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster, along with guests including contractors.

'We are delighted to mark this major investment in a new facility for the production of advanced composite aircraft wings. The CSeries aircraft programme will help to build on our track record of almost 40 years experience in composites technology. We are currently testing and proving out the design, manufacturing and assembly processes for the CSeries aircraft wing. We are making excellent progress and are very pleased with the results so far,' said Michael Ryan.

'Just over a year ago, the CSeries aircraft project was announced. Today we have laid the corner stone for a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. This is a 20-year programme which will generate around 800 high quality jobs at Bombardier Belfast in addition to the many employment opportunities during the build phase for the local construction sector during the current downturn,' declared Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster.

'Locating the CSeries aircraft wing project in Northern Ireland is a clear endorsement of the expertise and skill which exists in our aerospace sector and highlights our international reputation for excellence. As this project develops, I hope that there will be further opportunities for Bombardier and Invest Northern Ireland to strengthen the Northern Ireland aerospace industry,' she added.

Bombardier Belfast has successfully assembled a pre-production demonstrator wing using its innovative Resin Transfer Infusion advanced composites process, and is on track to begin testing this in early 2010. Testing will be undertaken in a specialised test rig where hydraulic jacks will be used to induce bending and twisting into the wing structure, replicating every possible combination of severe loading that the wing may experience in service.

Almost 400 engineering and support staff in Belfast are currently engaged in the research and development of the wings. Some 800 jobs will be generated during full production, as well as many more in the wider supply chain. In addition, around 450 construction personnel are involved in this first phase of the building project.

'We are delighted that Bombardier Belfast's capabilities and skills, as well as the wider economy, will benefit strongly from the CSeries aircraft programme,' Mr Ryan added.

Since launching the CSeries family of aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2008, Bombardier has recorded firm orders for 50 CS100 and CS300 aircraft from Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Lease Corporation International Group. The CSeries aircraft, which are optimized for the longer range, single-aisle 100- to 145-seat market, will deliver the lowest operating costs in their class, exceptional operational flexibility, wide body comfort and an unmatched environmental scorecard.

— WebWireID107937 —

Airlines / Aviation

Business Announcements

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Airbus remains on track to achieve another record year of aircraft deliveries in 2009 and continues to target a strong intake of new orders for the 12 months - confirming its sustained leadership during one of the most turbulent economic times in commercial aviation history.

Speaking to journalists today at the Dubai Airshow, President and CEO Tom Enders said Airbus expects to at least match its all-time high of 483 deliveries in 2008, and possibly surpass the total this year.

"There are still six weeks to go before the end of the year, and our delivery centres are very, very active these days," Enders told reporters. "We still hope to deliver a lot of aircraft before the year is over."

For new business in 2009, Airbus anticipates logging a total of between 200 and 300 orders, with the focus on safeguarding these bookings - particularly from the financing point of view.

"Everyone knows the difficulties faced by the entire airline industry, particularly in new aircraft financing," he added. "So far, we have been able to cope with this despite it being a difficult year, and we've been concentrating on making sure that our aircraft production output actually does lead to deliveries."

Enders said it is particularly appropriate that the Dubai Airshow comes as this year's final major aviation industry event - putting the focus on the Middle East as it remains one of the world's strongest airline markets. He noted that real traffic growth in the region continues strong, supporting Airbus' market outlook that Middle East airlines will require more than 1,400 new passenger aircraft in the 2009-2028 timeframe to meet demand that is expected to continue above the world average.

"This air show couldn't be at a better place, at a better time - as it sends a strong signal of encouragement and recovery," Enders added.

— WebWireID107919 —

Airlines / Aviation

Business Announcements

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Boeing [NYSE: BA] today at the Dubai Airshow announced that Project Vigilare, a Network Centric Command and Control System (NC3S) solution for Australia, has completed two major milestones: its first data transmission with a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18 Hornet using Link 16 technology, and development of its record and replay feature.

"These key capabilities will deliver significant benefits to the Australian Defence Force," said Rod Drury, Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) vice president of Strategy and Business Development. "Our NC3S product line, of which the Australian solution is provided under Project Vigilare, continues to strengthen Boeing's position as a global developer of advanced defense technology."

Vigilare's Link 16 capability will enable the RAAF to securely transfer and receive critical tactical data to and from RAAF platforms such as the Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft, F/A-18 Hornets, F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and naval assets. The first transmission took place at Vigilare's Northern Regional Operations Centre (NorthROC), RAAF Base Tindal, Northern Territory, Australia.

Boeing will conduct a follow-on NC3S capability demonstration for the Commonwealth of Australia in early 2010, in which an airborne RAAF Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft will transmit data using Link 16 to the Vigilare system at NorthROC.

The record and replay capability will improve operator training and mission planning by allowing RAAF console operators to replay real and simulated scenarios multiple times to multiple operator consoles simultaneously, separately or concurrently with the active NC3S system. The feature operates in two modes: role replication or video replay, in which the operator can replay missions or engagements, and interactive replay, where the operator can interact with the replay and manipulate the replayed data and voice set to explore different outcomes.

NC3S works by combining information in near real-time from a wide range of platforms, sensors, tactical data links and intelligence networks to deliver tactical- and strategic-level surveillance operations and battlespace management in the air and joint domains. The live inputs from these sources are then fused to present a unified operational picture to the operator at single or multiple operational control centers.

NC3S is one of Boeing's first significant Command, Control and Communications (C3) defense products built outside the United States that is available for international sale.

An NC3S demonstrator is on display at the Dubai Airshow until Nov. 19.

Boeing Defence Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company and a business unit of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, is a leading Australian aerospace enterprise. With a world-class team of nearly 2,000 employees at 13 locations throughout Australia and two international sites, Boeing Defence Australia supports some of the largest and most complex defense projects in Australia.

A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is one of the world's largest space and defense businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile manufacturer of military aircraft. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is a $32 billion business with 70,000 employees worldwide.

— WebWireID107911 —

Airlines / Aviation

Business Announcements

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Adding flexibility to the fleet

Yemenia, the official carrier of the state of Yemen, based in Sanaa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 10 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The agreement was signed at the 2009 Dubai Airshow by Saleh Alawaji, Yemenia Member of the board of directors on behalf of Captain Abdulkhalek Al-Kadi, Chairman of Yemenia and John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Yemenia's A320s will be configured in a comfortable two-class configuration with seating for 12 passengers in Business Class and 138 in Economy. The aircraft will be deployed to enhance and expand services on regional, African, Indian and European routes. It will enable Yemenia to demonstrate its role as a growing regional carrier and contributor to the growth of Yemen's economy.

Saleh Alawaji, said: "Our long term strategy is to grow with an integrated fleet of super efficient and reliable aircraft. The A320 shares operational and maintenance commonality with our existing Airbus', and will bring added efficiencies. The A320 will also offer our passengers the best cabin comfort in its class."

"We are honoured Yemenia is showing such confidence in our aircraft, and has chosen our products to springboard their ambitious expansion plans. The A320 is today's standard in the Single-Aisle market and through our continuous innovations we are strengthening the aircraft's leadership position for the future. The A320 is better by design and still keeps getting better," said John Leahy. "With its choice, Yemenia will benefit from Airbus' family concept which highlights eco-efficiency and streamlines maintenance and operations," he added.

Yemenia's fleet includes two A330-200s and three A310s. Sanaa and Aden based, Yemenia's long haul fleet, operate to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. During the 2007 Dubai airshow, Yemenia placed an order with Airbus for ten Airbus A350 XWB.

The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly by wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. Around 6,400 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold and more than 4,000 delivered to some 300 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world's best selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the worldwide standard wide-body system.

— WebWireID107898 —

Airlines / Aviation

Business Announcements

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

Saab has signed a contract for the sale of two airborne surveillance systems to the United Arab Emirates. The contract is worth approximately 1.5 billion SEK.

The contract covers two Saab 340 AEW (Airborne Early Warning) systems, comprising of the Saab 340 aircraft equipped with the advanced Erieye radar system. The contract also includes ground equipment as well as logistics and support services.
A true multi-mission system

An Airborne Early Warning system is used to monitor a country's airspace, borders and territorial waters. Together with the associated ground equipment, the surveillance system provides a detailed situational picture that can be used in conjunction with, for example, border control and rescue operations.

"We've been conducting discussions with the UAE for several years concerning an airborne surveillance system," says Saab's CEO Åke Svensson. "This contract is an additional proof of our expertise and international competitiveness within the field of network-based solutions for defence and civil security."
Operational in several countries

Saab's Erieye surveillance system is a market success.

Icelandair, Iceland's most popular air company, have launched a Northern Lights package deal for those who wish to view the wonders of the Aurora Borealis this winter. The 'Aurora Adventure' is a 'once in a lifetime' six-day excursion flying from North America*, split between Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik and Hofn in the south-eastern part of the country.

The Northern Lights are with out a doubt one of the mother nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles in the world. The natural light displays of the Aurora Borealis occur frequently in the Polar Regions, centred within a 2500 km radius of the geomagnetic pole. Iceland's perfect location just below the Arctic Circle provides the ideal destination to view the Northern Lights.

The predominant cause for the appearance of the Northern Lights is the amount of sunspot's on the surface of the Sun. The intensity of the Aurora is relevant to the amount of occurring sunspots as well as clear visibility; these sunspots follow an 11-year cycle that is set to peak between 2011 and 2012. Scientists concur that the conditions for viewing the Northern Lights in 2010 are especially excellent – making this winter the perfect to explore the marvels of Iceland.

To find out more about the 'Aurora Adventure' visit the Icelandair website.

*flights from Boston (BOS), New York (JFK) and Seattle (SEA) only.

— WebWireID107840 —

Airlines / Aviation

Leisure / Travel / Hotels

Lifestyle / Society

Multimedia / Online / Internet

Travel Industry

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

For the third year running, Saab has been ranked among Scandinavia's 20 best companies for climate reporting by the international Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The reasons for the top ranking are Saab's strategic long-term climate work and its investment in new environmental technologies. Saab's goal is to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases by 20 percent by the year 2020, compared with 2007.

"We are delighted that we can contribute with more and more solutions and products that lead to a society with lower emissions of carbon dioxide. Everything from solutions for more efficient transport flows on land and at sea, to Saab's work on the EU Clean Sky programme, which aims to reduce the effects of aviation on climate," says Saab's Environmental Director, Kenth Algotsson.
Saab's investment in new environmental technology

Saab participates in several European projects within environmental technologies:

    * Clean Sky - Saab's contribution includes the development of new types of wings, energy-efficient systems for deicing and smarter flights that will make European aviation more environmentally friendly and reduce emissions by 20-40 percent.
* SESAR – a development programme for air traffic control which aims to streamline European airspace, increase safety and reduce the environmental impact. Saab's contribution is i.e. the continuing development of remotely operated air traffic control towers, the ROT concept.

Decreased carbon dioxide emissions

From 2007 to 2008, Saab has reduced its emissions by about 7,500 tonnes, from 55,000 tonnes to 47,500 tonnes. The decrease is primarily due to reduced activity in South Africa and the divestment of Saab Space, but Saab's efforts to reduce emissions from its own operations have also produced results.
About the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent non-profit organisation with the largest database in the world of corporate climate reporting. Every year CDP presents the 20 companies that have shown the most professional handling of corporate governance with a focus on reporting the effects on climate change.

— WebWireID107842 —

Aerospace / Defense

Airlines / Aviation

Environment

Politics

Transportation / Shipping

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds

An Airbus A380 arriving for the Dubai Airshow will carry with it eight tonnes of humanitarian aid. The delivery, facilitated by the Airbus Corporate Foundation, a non-commercial arm of the leading aircraft manufacturer, and its partners, will boost crucial stocks at Action Against Hunger's hub in the emirate – strategically located to serve a global effort.

Founded in France in 1979, Action Against Hunger is recognised as one of the most important humanitarian organisations combating hunger and malnutrition worldwide. It is an issue that affects approximately one billion people across the globe, with most lacking access to clean water leading to disease and malnutrition, and remains the largest single contributor to child mortality. Today's delivery of water purification equipment, more than 50 cubic metres, the equivalent of two 20' standard sea freight containers, to the non-governmental organisation's (NGO) Dubai base is central to its efforts.

Tom Enders, Head of the Airbus Corporate Foundation and President and CEO of Airbus, said: 'Thanks to all our partners, the Airbus Corporate Foundation has been able to support Action Against Hunger by transporting vital emergency sanitation equipment to one of the key storage hubs. This is a great example of how aviation, being a key enabler of global economic and social development and an essential resource for humanitarian efforts, can help in a very tangible way. We hope this to be the start of a long-term partnership between both our organisations.'

Action Against Hunger is increasing stocks at its Dubai base to capitalise on the emirate's strategic location from which to serve a coordinated global effort in response to emergency situations elsewhere in the world. The non-profit, non-religious organisation has established an international network to deliver life-saving programmes in some 45 countries, specialising in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster and chronic food insecurity. A primary concern of these projects is to facilitate the provision of – and access to – safe water through programmes that currently reach four million people each year.

Erland Egiziano, Logistics Director Action Against Hunger, said: 'More than one billion people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. These issues are the root cause of many infections that lead to sickness and ultimately malnutrition and are responsible for 2.2 million preventable deaths each year – mostly among children. In our efforts to eliminate hunger, clean water is as essential as food. The equipment being delivered today by the Airbus Corporate Foundation is vital in restoring dignity, self-sufficiency and independence for vulnerable communities and saving the lives of children and their families throughout the world.'

The Airbus Corporate Foundation was established in December 2008 to support humanitarian causes through good will flights, youth development in the communities in which it operates, and environmental issues in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

— WebWireID107789 —

Airlines / Aviation

Lifestyle / Society

Not for profit

WebWire® Copyright © 2009 Warmtone Corp. | Use of this content is subject to our Terms of Service | More Feeds
